Iceland Ring Road: Svartifoss to Djúpivogur
Welcome to our second day in Iceland and the continuation of our journey around the country’s famous and beautiful Ring Road. We encounter a spectacular waterfall at Svartifoss; glaciers with their icebergs flowing past on their way south into the ocean at Jökulsárlón; some friendly Icelandic horses; and a couple of beautifully situated quaint coastal towns, Höfn and Djúpivogur. Join me on another day of unique adventures with my amazing granddaughters, Isabella and Charlotte.

Steens Mountain: Wildhorse Lake & Other Adventures
มุมมอง 41421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Join me and my daughter, Maddie, on an Eastern Oregon desert trip, featuring my favorite place in Oregon, The Steens, and a hike from near its 9700’ peak down through vast fields of wildflowers to the pristine and beautiful Wildhorse Lake. See spectacular gorges on the flanks of Steens Mountain from our drive on the Loop Road, and a hidden gem to the east of Steens, The Pillars of Rome. Join us...
Iceland Ring Road Part 1
มุมมอง 16728 วันที่ผ่านมา
Iceland is a land of truly spectacular scenery: waterfalls, mountains, nature baths/hot springs, glaciers, and beautiful horses. Join me with my granddaughters, Isabella and Charlotte, as we start our journey on the Ring Road heading east. The loop is about 850 miles long, and with all of the side trips, we perhaps doubled that mileage on our trip. Part 1 is our first full day, including two mi...
Top Ten Oregon Road Trip Coffee Stops
มุมมอง 536หลายเดือนก่อน
My friends and family claim I know "a great little coffee joint" in every place I've ever visited. Well ... coffee is one of life's great simple pleasures and I've accumulated quite a few. We love to stop before and/or after hiking to enjoy a nice coffee and perhaps a treat. And, can't imagine a road trip without some great coffee stops. There's always something wonderful to discover, from the ...
Fort Rock: Buzz's Adventure in The Oregon Outback
มุมมอง 2.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Fort Rock, a magnificent geological feature and one of my favorite places in Oregon - I visit there at least once a year - is a volcanic crater, shaped sort of like a fort, half a mile across and 300 feet high. It’s fascinating for its geological qualities and its history, as well as the many birds that nest and hunt there. On my recent adventure there in June, I circumnavigated the outside of ...
Macduff Mountain, Willamette National Forest

Join us on a beautiful, pristine, almost 100-year-old trail in the Willamette National Forest. The Macduff Mountain Trail was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930’s. This under-the-radar hike is often steep, blossoming in late June with wildflowers, and rewarding at the rocky summit with almost 360-degree views of the Cascade Peaks and surrounding forest. The outing was or...
Saddle Rock Trail, Los Padres National Forest
มุมมอง 1462 หลายเดือนก่อน
A stone's throw from lovely Santa Barbara is the Saddle Rock Trail which we embarked on one fine April morning. It's a "lollipop" loop, often steep, and with bouldering required; it's challenging! The constant views of the surrounding mountains, the Pacific Ocean, the city of Santa Barbara, and up and down the coast are spectacular and made our hike well worth the effort. We made several trips ...
Strawberry Moon: A Sunset Hike in Eugene, Oregon

This is the story of two sunset ascents of Spencer Butte: June 20, celebrating the Summer Solstice, and June 21, to experience the strikingly beautiful Strawberry Moon. The Spencer Butte Trail, on the southern edge of Eugene, Oregon, is a scenic, fairly steep classic Oregon trail through old growth forest to a rocky peak with views in every direction. The Adirondacks: Big Slide & Whiteface Mountain

Join me on a special adventure in the Adirondacks, both a walk down memory lane and the beginning of a chapter for my daughter and her boyfriend. I hiked many of these northern New York mountain trails when I lived in Rochester in the 70’s & 80’s. There are forty-six peaks over 4000' in this range, and I hiked 27 of them before leaving for the west coast in 1991. It was good to be back on Big S...
Steens Mountain Road Trip: The Alvord Desert to Frenchglen

This day, the 3rd of our recent romp through Eastern Oregon, offers a change of pace: no hiking! Instead, we took a spectacular road trip including 64 miles through the Alvord Desert on the east side of The Steens and a slight detour to drive and frolic on the playa. It was on this very playa that Jessica Combs, “The Fastest Woman on 4 Wheels”, set the women’s world land speed record at 522.783...

I'm guessing you were there in early May... we were just there in late May, there was a little less snow. It was fun watching the cowboys on the cattle roundup, moving the herd to higher elevations. We stayed at Alvord Hot Spring for 2 days, drove around to French Glen and up Steens Loop from the south end. As you know, the road is blocked off up near the top... road cave ins. We hiked up the road all the way to where we saw down to the Alvord Desert on the east side of Steens. Phenomenal trip... saw wild horse herds, antelope by the dozen, wild burros, mule deer, geese, a bear... we are DEFINITELY going back.

A few years ago, they closed down the nicest trail which featured many beautiful rock formations. I had been climbing it every day for about 3 years. When they reopened, I was dismayed to see the "improvements". They had taken rock saws and cut huge stair steps into the living rock. Defaced many of the majestic giant boulders. Dumped the scrap rock down the hill, covering more of the boulder field with tons of debris. It resembled now somewhere between a Flintstone's theme park and a rock quarry. This is conservation??? First do no harm. They obviously forgot that one. Unbelievably idiotic.

5:56 That is about 1 mile from my house! Speaking of ROAD COFFEE... Circle K installed new coffee machines in all their stores last year. The machines grind the beans and fresh-brew each cup, all for a $2 or so. I first ran into the system at the Corvallis exit off I-5. I was on my way to Lincoln City, where they have a Circle K on either end of town! The pump thermos system is DEAD (or at least it can be dead).
