Columbia Hills: After The Ice Storm

- This was a strange but exhilarating day! We drove east through the Columbia River Gorge in rain and fog, seeking the blue skies and sun predicted for Washington’s Columbia Hills State Park. When we arrived at the trailhead, the rain had stopped but heavy fog remained. The trail’s snowy path didn’t daunt us, but the lack of visibility caused us to switch gears. We drove up the hill to the historic Dalles Mountain Ranch, part of the state park, for a stroll around the ranch and to scout out a hike above the fog.
After an hour, seeing the fog had a ceiling, we returned to the original trailhead and began hiking up in the snow. And what a stroke of great fortune this was! We emerged from the fog after some 300’ of elevation gain and were treated to sensational snow-covered scenery as we continued upward. Note the 4 deer observing us from the snowy hillside above.
Columbia Hills Historical State Park is 80 miles east of Portland, on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge.

Woah! I’ve never seen the gorge with that kind of snow before. So cool.
Actually a glaze of ice covering the snow.
