Not sure if this is relevant but I tend to build my draft cubes as you describe, "Sideways". I have a Tolkien themed Cube that is only LOTR cards and cards that invoke the feel of Tolkien's Legendarium. I have a Cube themed around the TV show, Supernatural, and one Based on The old school, classic Black and White horror movies from the early 1900s.

I've mostly avoided this, but it does suck. What I have encountered that is similar is when someone will build up a really strong board, but when you are about to board wipe, the complain and/or plead, saying if you do that, their deck will just fold and they'll be out of the game. Again, it's players not building a good enough deck, and that's not my fault, it is theirs. If your commander deck cannot withstand one board wipe, same as if it can't withstand one Butcher... well you built a bad deck, don't really know what to tell you.

Atogatog feels like an uncard but isn't absolutely hilarious, would recommend.

I had nekusaur naturally first before I knew how hated this type of deck was. My tibalt deck has elements of group slug and resource denial in red and black. My red Jaya deck is group slug and targeted burn with Jaya's activated ability. Clearly my favorite of them all is my liesa shroud of dusk deck. I run her over Kambal because she always cost 5 mana from the command zone and is a 5/5 with lifelink. Playing these decks forced me to double down on my interaction for obvious reasons. A tip I force myself to abide by is to always have interaction in my opening hand even if I can't play my commander. I always recommend other players do this as well.

So I understand that being fetchable is a huge pro for the surveil lands, but how much better are they than temples for decks that don't have graveyard synergies?

I still play Zur the enchanter and adapt the toolbox to the power level of the table. There are so many fun enchantments! My doran deck still wins a surprising amount of games although the commander itself is not as scary as it used to be.

group slug is fun, i use mogis and is mostly just random cards and budget but still wins from time to time. Lets be honest you wont be winning much because well you will be target num 1 most times, all those pain enchantments hurts but even in losing there is fun because you do affect the game and mess up with everyone else game. Also so much pain, games tend to finish faster which is a plus i guess.

When it comes to infinite combos, I think what some players dislike isn't power level, but the fact that they feel anticlimatic. In my playgroup we are rather experienced players and we don't ban them, but I have witnessed a natural tendency towards not playing them just because games played with no combos have a tendency to be more memorable to us.

Clearly, the best politics are shotgun politics of forcing everyone to attack everyone while I sit behind 7 Ghostly Prisons and inevitably place 2nd.

I also built a similar deck called Codie's auction house with Codie as a commander (because he can Tutor for cards with Profane Tutor) trying to reset and lock down the game. Then, the game is "programmed" to flip a random creature every turn and cast Illicit Auction on it. Everyone then fights with the creatures they get, and the board becomes bigger every turn, so that paying life for the auction becomes more and more risky. Lifelink creatures are very good

This matches my experience with MKM. The detectives and the theming seemed all over the place and really off putting at first, but the singles coming out of this set have been some of the more interesting commander designs of late. My only hope for the set is that the team responsible for making commander precons really latches onto the surveil lands like they did with the temples and bi-cycling lands as fetchable enters tapped lands.

I like how half of this is dedicated to making everyone play *your* deck exclusively rather than the uno deck itself.

I mainly run arcane denial for one specific reason: It's an unconditional counterspell for 2 mana that doesn't break the bank (or rather, I had so many copies flying around before people decided that it was worth something that I consider it a free include). It also replaces itself, which is a nice bonus. The second part is that I have a bajillion copies of AD flying around. I don't necessarily have copies of the latest Cancel With Upside or Conditional 2 Mana Counterspell or Cancel That Occasionally Costs 2 Mana

Mkm was my first pre release event and at the time i don't think I realized just how much good shit I got out of that.

10:30 Me watching the guy who hates me for some reason blast my arcane signet with removal while the guy next to me has already drawn 3 extra cards with his Esper sentinel. Then two turns later he complains when I boardwipe away all non-artifacts and the guy with the Esper sentinel/artifact deck KO's him for being the next biggest threat on the table.

Voltstrider would be sooo broken if it did what you said it would do. Thank god it doesn't work like that! 😅

MKM gave me my first dose of keyword/mechanic bloat. Cloaking cards is a great example: between morphs, foretell, manifests... did we really need another mechanic to flip cards down?

It's funny, I personally mainly like commanders that do a thing and also provide the way to do it. At least a way. Because so often my stuff gets blown up that I need my commander to be able to do SOMETHING on their own. Maybe it's a playgroup thing.

Now you just get out Giltleaf and screw the table turn after turn. I actually use Giltleaf in my elf ball deck, but this guy could be a solid include

One of my recent favorite bottom up designs was with mutate and Indominus rex. Like "hey you know how Slippery boggle is a really great mutate target? well what if it was huge and indestructible as well? *chef's kiss*

My favorite card from MKM is definitely Proft's Eidetic Memory. I’ve been having a bunch of fun with it in standard with ingenious prodigy, ledger shredder and steamcore scholar. I’d love to build something in commander around it unfortunately kinda difficult in commander.

Important thing with kylox’s voltstrider is you don’t get to cast the spell for free like you mentioned. You still have to pay for the spell

MKM is one of my favorite sets that've came out recently. solid cycle of duals, 3 mana land tutor in green that also can exile artifact/enchantment, a ton of Clue token support in the main set and the supplementary sets making clues open enough to do interesting things with now that aren't just lonis. if we're including the Clue supplemental product the Room Lands are great budget utility lands. 1 for every guild with 4 (t) : Investigate. Genuinely I don't understand why everyone was so not hype for MKM and I still don't understand the lack of interest in the set as a whole

I have been known to build some janky commanders. One time I even played enchantress Kitt Kanto and used the enchantress engine to churn out a bunch of tokens and goad other people's creatures with. Unfortunately; playing a lesser known commander with a weird strategy does not necessarily mean you're any less succinct to removal. The sad truth is that as long as your commander is popping off; it doesn't matter if it's Atraxa or Arcum Daggson. The other players are ultimately going to put a stop to it somehow, someway.

Lost in the Maze is especially powerful for Zaxara and Magus Lucea Kane - it's an X spell that almost guarantees your commander will be hexproof!

Consider playing the Voltstrider in a UR big spells deck as you described but with River Song as the commander so you can constantly recur the same spell.

I'm still not sold on the Surveil lands. I wasn't a fan when they were spoiled, and i couldnt believe how quickly their value increased. Then cedh TH-camr's started praising them and their effectiveness. Which HALF made sense. So i caved and got one for one of my decks. I am yet to draw it in a game, but i have been devastated EVERY time i have drawn it whilst goldfishing! Turbo Naus Ob Nix needs that 1 mana too much i think 🤣🍻

Lost in the Maze was an auto-include in my first and (extremely biased) favorite deck. Phenax, God of Deception - I am already tapping a lot of my creatures to do mill stuff and Lost basically is just two blue to give some of my cornerstones immunity to anything aside from boardwipes.

I will say though, I had a friend play this as mono red discard, with madness and hollow one etc, and as far as discard goes 1 mana discard 2 in mono red is about the most efficient you get, though splashing black you get more payoff and anje is just too good. But the concept of killing a threat and then getting extra value every turn felt powerful when i was on the other side of the table

MKM is actually a well made Standard set. Collect Evidence synergizes with Descend from the Ixalan set immediately before. As for EDH, sleepers, Wispdrinker Vampire gives WB Aristocrats another drain effect while her second ability allows you to make an aggro play with creatures you'd normally use for sacc fodder. Offbeat and interesting.

You mentioned that you are replacing Cultivate/Kodama's Reach with Archdruid's Charm in your green-heavy decks. You should try out Nissa's Pilgrimage as well. Strictly better in a mono-green deck.

Hey perfect timing! I was looking for more scry/draw effects for my Lathril Voltron list and “Snarling Gorehound” is a perfect fit. Almost as good as “Season of Growth” but better than “Sylvan Anthem” that just barely misses the cut. (Im play a very budget list and low to the ground so 2 green is usually gonna be used for another elf or my commander). 😊

Cool seeing doppelgang and lost in the maze, I use them in a recently builded zaxara budget deck and I'm having tons of fun, if you manage to cast doppelgang more than once in a game its almost always gg (playing casual)
