I like this message. :) It's tough to get new players into the game. None of my normal friends play magic with me. I have to go to the commander night at the LGS to have fun. And I always bring a chill, easy-going attitude. Show me your cards! It's all fun in my world.
I personally have the definition that casual is everything that you cannot expect to get wins in a cedh pod with. But the basically only deck I ever got salty about was a deck that used shirei, don't know if spelled correctly but he recives all your 1 power creatures that died that turn in the end phase, and grave pact effects but no win con, we literally sat tgere for 10+ turns with nobody being able to play (all our creatures died and all cards discarded in the draw phase) until he got to hard draw into some beatstick. By now he added a few blood artists and a loop with a creature to get a lot of die triggers per turn and a few tutors, the deck is a lot more powerful now but I don't have a problem with it anymore because I don't have to sit around for hours watching one guy win Just for the slight chance that the table draws enough removal in a single rotation to keep his commander dead for a few turns.
One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
Trinket mage has another "git gud" take 😅
I've played a game of commander planeschase that had 2 players playing group hug and two playing chaos. It was... a long night.
Woah turns out the people who get mad over cardboard don’t like being told they’re getting too mad at cardboard
I found this guy on edhrec a few months ago and I’ve been liking him a lot
I dont know why they kept making swords.
Lagomos, Hand of Hatred is my favorite
Love this guy, he's in the 99 of my Ayara First of Lochthwain deck, he's so fun.
This might be a stupid question, but after going through the deck list, how are you winning via hour of promise?
When I first started playing (like I just pulled up to a table for the first time) a friend of mine brought a Kira great glasspinner and hard controlled the board with stealing. Because I didn’t know ways around the effects or how to protect my things. On top of that all my interaction was spot removal so yeah I was pretty upset. Recently we started playing again and they brought that same deck out and 3 years later yeah it’s honestly pretty fair. Even though they won the game was fun and I knew enough to make plays at the table.
What are your opinions on a deck that helps one person kill the other 2 people in edh and then you try to kill them in the 1v1 like with a board wipe in the end? I have Ms. Bumbleflower and I give a guy all the card draw about 4 turns in and try to save a board wipe, counterspell, and a protection spell once the 1v1 happens.
I’ve been debating making this as a thrill tribal commander! I didn’t know it was so old as there was recent printings, neat! I sure hope I don’t make this my 11th commander deck…
I love how this video comes as I recently added Stax pieces into my Voltron deck. 😅 What's some advice to help my opponents enjoy the game better?
Built him for PreDH. he is awesome.
*laughs in thalid tribal* I was born in the jank, you mearly adopted it.
I love this guy. Should have given him a 7. His ceiling is actually pretty high
I've never heard of this guy, 10/10 would breed
My opinion is to be careful of not be result oriented. Like, sure, THIS game went well, and THAT card dropped exactly at the right time in THIS particular situation. But it doesn't really mean that this card fits your deck, and even more : that you couldn't slot better. My perfect example in this is Think Twice versus Deep Analysis. The former gives you two cards for a total of 5 mana, you drew two cards. While Deep Analysis gives you twice the amount for only one more mana used (and a couple of HP, but situations when you can comeback a game at 3 HP or less "never" happen, let's be honest). The only good argument Think Twice can have is "I can cast it earlier". Sure, but why would you want to draw an extra card on turn two ? And another one on turn 3 ? You trust your library so little ?
I love the videos man. Came back to Magic this year after not playing for about seven years really helped kinda my brain to the current game.
This is so true. New players look at a card and their first question is “how fun does this look?” Many vets of the game go “how much do i need to worry about this card?” Which is technically threat assessment but robs a bit of their own fun. My friends introduced me to the game a few months ago, we play a lot now. Every game has some cool play followed up by one of the other two flailing about the card. I usually follow up with “i thought that was a sick play :)” but they clearly disagree
i get salty when i want to play some Brawl commanders in Arena and the match ups are people playing the most boring wincons ever invented like Lifegain, or Stax or ramping up with mana rocks to play some broken bomb that costs eleven turns to drop in a normal circumstance. Look i picked Narfi right? im just playing Zombie(and skeletons) tribal, it doesn't need that much IQ to get a match with someone playing on equal powerlvl, at best i have Gyruda as a wildcard over there, who are these guys and why are they tryharding so much?
"Roadblock" type cards have a name, Floodgates
As much as I love this guy and the lore behind him, I get the rating. He's like the Zada of mono black, where you kinda need to go unanswered to properly go off. Very fun looking commander though, admittedly I've always kinda wanted to use him.
Remember to not run creatures with 7 or more cmc!
and both arts are sick!
There is no "l" in both
It's not the same without the usual intro 🙂↕️
I honestly didn’t think anyone was going to miss the old intro… I will keep testing things and keep this in mind
Goes great in a Tesya Orhzov Scion deck 👌🏾
After talking him up so much..."6/10 he's pretty great?!" Maybe it's because he really isn't that diverse in the way you build him. I don't know. You could play him with conspiracy and a bunch of tutors to make sure you have it so all the Thrulls you generate aren't actually Thrulls, but whatever creature type you want to build around. Mono black Vampires, Zombies or Demons perhaps... Definitely a jank way to play him, but he's cool. I would think he's at least cool enough for a 7/10, especially with how excited you sounded for him. Is it just me or did anyone else expect to hear a higher ranking after being told he's "criminally underplayed?"
Agreed
Okay that is a pretty sexy card
I like the flavor of the card, get too many thralls, they rise up and kill endrek
What exactly is a Thrull? The image shows them as some kind of fleshy ghoul
It's like a homunculus
They are actually living creatures animated from dead flesh. Sort of like a hybrid of homunculi and zombies.
they appeared first time on fallen empires like saprolings, and later used mainly on ravnica for basically the same concept
They are unded servants often associated with the ebon hand
@Breviparopus They aren't actually undead, although they're animated flesh. The way in which they're animated actually makes them alive, unlike zombies. It's barely a distinction to be honest
the point of many of the banns you criticize is to preserve the format's intended play. every format has it and you see banning even by wizards for that reason. most of those cards are banned because Cammander as a format is about playing a long game slowly building to a victory. and those cards in some way go against the intended play of the formate. either by winning out of nowhere or doing one of the worst things in commander. knocking one to two people out of the game and then dragging on for another hour. These are things opposed to the format. so they are banned and justly so. especsily instance and sorcery wins because there simply aren't counterspells outside of blue unless we want to talk about the small collection of expensive novelty spells from early magic and the two red has. they just shouldn't be part of the format. no matter how much I'd love playing weird jank builds with them that use them in ways not intended. I would love to build a deck around giving emrakul to my opponents and forcing them to attack me. emrakul is just bad for the format. plus a lot of these cards were like golos and dockside. they were just always run and made the format stall. I played through most of these cards banning I've been playing edh for almost a decade and a half and most cards you call out I do know why this is banned outside of the stuff from before I played where cards they hamaginized the format to a massive extent. I remember regularly seeing Emrakul mirror matches and golos mirror matches. or mirror matches with the biorhythm deck. these cards are banned because simply put when they were legal they led to less deck variety and were so popular and so oppressive to most strategies that they pushed a lot of deck types out of most pods. they made the format worse by taking away the thing that makes the format fun, variety. no amount of influencers saying x and y to encourage better decks will change that most people aren't as invested as us, and its really hard to look at on of the most popular commanders or staples that are making games unfun for most causal players and say that they shouldn't be banned and they should just get good.
Another point I think you missed was if you dont run the stax, removal, control, roadblocks and no one is running this stuff then it increases that critical mass issue that speeds up decks because they know they can get away with more than they should.
Just today someone brought their Tergrid deck to a pod with a new player, made that player discard their hand, destroy their lands and sac their creatures just for me to run them over because i hard focused them for bringing a tergrid deck to a new player. When the Tergrid player scooped for "being targeted" the new player was confused and the tergrid player was mad because he felt targeted. This was not a good game for anyone.
As a noob I'm beyond thrilled to find some card draw punishment for my Alania deck, Zurzoth looks SICK. Thank you guys 🙏🏻
My Mogis slug deck also has some troubles, but imo, he’s fantastic in Neegan as it helps get more damage around or I get treasures.
Most people complaining about power level are normally just complaining about price. Fetch lands aren’t that powerful but they are expensive so bitter players are more so voicing “you have nice thing :(((“
3:24 not yet just wait till wizards decides it's time to release the tier list
A very interesting video, and i agree the sort of cultural default of Magic and Commander is very salty and tilty vs Fighting Games (which is where I dabbled for a while as a Magic break) There's such a difference in mindset, which is weirdly like... Spiritually and physically opposite to magic? Like in Magic people will rage at the salt they see other people use, while doing uwu smol beans at the table and leave new players to flounder. My experience in Fighting games was the opposite in that its like the kindest people in the world absolutely beating your ass, and helping you workshop through what theyre doing verbally so you learn to stop it
Once the saga ends, you have to recast her... If she flips back to her front side when the saga ends. Then it would be better! But I see this card as an in the 99 card.
Glad my pod does want to play baby games.
why would you ever be hopeful is Wizards gets their Hands on ANY Format. Fan Formats are always for the love of the game, as soon as the company gains any control its all about the profit
Tbh, drannith Magistrate probably shouldn't be in a casual game without a rule Zero talk in the first place
I find it really interesting how you identified in the beginning of the video that cEDH are meta-decks. In a very real sense, this is true. cEDH has a metagame that shifts frequently. There are archetypal combos and builds; some that stick around longer than others. New cards and bans can drastically alter the composition of decks or the entire format. cEDH has a relationship with the available card pool that is radically different from EDH/casual. This relationship does exist in EDH for sure, but isn't felt in the same way and is far less relevant. For one, meta-shifts happen on a much longer time-scale, often explained as power creep. What you exhibited in this video is that the cultural practices of players and player-communities have a much greater power over the EDH table than the card pool or WOTC. This is the true meta of EDH and it is far more indirect than the game pieces, but still material. Not to throw an unsubstantiated neologism into the mix, but I think this video is a post-meta critique. You are challenging the learned cultural practices of the EDH table and creating the possibility for new play patterns and new relationality to the opponent. I think (or rather hope) a lot of us veteran players have gained your insight through practice. My home playgroup definitely went through a phase of speeding up our decks and avoiding "road blocks." I hope enough people take this video to heart and it encourages some insight into other EDH cultural practices that need to be challenged. There are so many things that make magic players salty and overall we really need to learn that it's just cardboard. If we can do that, I think the game will really flourish.
As the resident ur dragon user of my play group I can confirm that reliquary tower is garbage in that deck
my salvaging station deck runs everything but red and its an animal.. also not enough people talk about the cromatic star bobble drawing up to 20 or more cards during a bord wipe including your own litle tokens. also grinding station works well with this one as a win con
Great vid
