Mr. 50mm
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ต.ค. 2023
Welcome to Mr. 50mm, this channel is about photography, I'll be discussing my interest in camera equipment, forays into making my own adaptors, or cameras. Trying to get camera parts to work on systems they were never meant to be on!
We'll also be discussing thoughts on vintage camera gear and maybe some reviews of newer kit should I get any.
As indicated by the title expect quite a few things centered around 50mm lenses as I do have a lot of those and find myself drawn to them no matter the manufacture.

Unexpectedly Glorious - The Pentax K-3
This is yet another camera which I only bought because it came with a lens I wanted. The 35mm F2 FA. That said, once I got it and shot it, I was a bit smitten! I honestly didn't think much of it when I got it, I do have a K-5 which is similar, but that camera never really clicked with me. The K-3 it clicked pretty good.

I has brought up that I got the Rebel XT earlier in a "The Rambling" video. I bought it for $20 dollars CAD, so basically American 2 nickels. Until now though I didn't shoot it, I just kept it around and just never got motivated to grab it. I have found some motivation, so let's see what I think of it. This is a bit of a departure from my normal reviews, I recently picked up my T90 to exercise it a bit (look it up, it's a thing) and I realized just how modern this thing feels. Looking into it a bit further turns out this camera birthed the Command Dial. Ain't that something? I've had this X-T1 for some time now. For the longest while I just wasn't that happy with the photos I got. Odd, because when I took the camera out I generally had fun shooting it, the hit rate was just low. Now I decided to keep shooting and eventually I got the hang of things. That said I'm not reviewing this with the idea of SOOC JPEGs, I'm still pretty happy with RAW time. So that's how I'l...

Literally had one delivered yesterday. Matched with a good copy of a SMC PENTAX -m 1.7 50 M LENS is sweet. Really nice images. My copy on the K10D is really sharp and clear with not much apparent distortion and chromatic issues and focuses well compared to my sigma 28mm super wide ii that performed better on my Pentax k200D that broke but also yielded really nice images. . Its interesting how certain lenses work better than others on different bodies. Next to try is my super takumars. By the way I like how the greens look with these Pentax CCD cameras and also they are contrasty the images can look to my eyes. Not flat looking.
The branches on trees don't look like mush as im fussy about them ha ha.
Its funny because the pentax SMC on the K200D the images looked softer compared to the K10D.
I bought mine for a lot of money a long time ago. Still have and use it frequently, for Studio work it's still excellent for everything you can imagine.
That's awesome to hear! Do you got a go too lens for your D800?
@@Mr50mmishMy most used lenses are the Micro Nikkor 60mm 2.8D, Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8D, Micro Nikkor 105mm 2.8G and Nikkor 16-35mm f4G.
Im 24 years old college student that loves photography, and I bought the Pentax K3 last year of August 2024 with my own money! 😜 Haha.. Love it! I use to shoot with a canon and switch to Pentax, but i really do like the pentax image quality. But i miss my canon 24mm pancakes lens, i hope Pentax makes one like this in the future huhu
Nice, that's great! What lenses do you like to use with your K3? That's fair, the Canon 24mm is pretty tiny, I think the closest one Pentax has is 21mm but it's kind of pricy. It does look awesome though. Yeah I hope they keep releasing more lenses and bodies!
@@Mr50mmishyes the 21mm limited is pricey even in used market huhu, as for now i only have 2 lenses (af) 18-55 da wr kit and the 50mm 1.8 da, 2 of them are fairly fast af but noisy due to screwdrive af.. Yes my next purchase probably the 21mm since mostly i do is street photography. I have 2 Pentax vintage lenses the 28mm 2.8 and the 50mm 1.4 all from asahi era, and im planning on selling them for exchange af pentax lenses like the 21mm limited huhu🥹 Im also proud that the Pentax K3 assembled in my country Philippines 🇵🇭💚, and many westerners praise for its well made and build quality, feels very solid in the hand. Anyways thank you for reviewing the K3 mr. 50mm it means a lot for us fellow newly and veteran pentaxians users
It was interesting to watch this video, I learned new details about the camera. Excellent purchase of K-3 / K-3 II. I really like the color and detail of these cameras. Regarding who the "Pentaxians" are :) it seems to me that these are people who get a little understandable pleasure from shooting with Pentax cameras and see the world through their lenses in a special way, and of course they really love nature. I think you're a Pentaxian too. I also plan to make a video about the Pentax K system, and I'm gradually collecting interesting equipment. I already have: ist*D, K10D, K-r, K-01, KS-2 Lenses: 40mm f/2.8, Tamron 90mm Macro f/2.8, DA 55-300 PLM, 77 mm f/1.8, Jupiter 37-A, Zenitar-K2 2/50, 50 mm F2.0, FA 50 mm f/1.4, K 50 mm f/1.2, DA 18-135 mm, DA 18-55 mm, Voightlander Color Oskar 20mm f/3.5, Sigma 20mm f/1.8, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Sigma 10-20 mm
Thanks! Your Pentax collection is awesome! How do you find the K-01? That camera sounds very funky. I didn't realize the camera was from 2012! It reminded me of the Sigma SD Quattro although I guess the Quattro should remind me of the K-01 since it predates it by years! Cheers
The K-01 produces a beautiful image with a range of lenses. It is convenient to use manual optics with it. Although she has difficulties with tracking focus and ergonomics, she still leaves a good impression and pleases with color. However, it is difficult to recommend K-01 for purchase, because their condition is not very good on the secondary market and the price may be high. I like the concept of the compact mirrorless Pentax camera. The company definitely needs to try this direction, or at least in collaboration with another brand.
@Ahm29ya ah fair. It would be neat if they gave this concept another try, the tech has gone a long way!
I bought the d600 used four years ago. Never regretted my choice. No problem at all with oil stains. Build like a tank, beautiful rendition with my Nikon 28-105mm and 50mm 1.8.
Awesome! It's good to hear they are still being used now. Sounds like a solid combo you got going! I'm also happy to hear that it seems the oil issue on remaining models seems to not be a real issue anymore!
I find the CCD show more tones than the CMOS. Images look more vivid. Thanks for the video.
expectedly glorious like most of the pentax dslrs
Haha. That might be the next title the next time I get a Pentax DSLR.
I almost wanna get a pentax just because there's so many great lenses. I use an EOS with an M42 adapter to shoot my favorite 50 lmao, the original asahi 1.7 and it's probably my fav all time lens
Hmm yeah some of the K-mount lenses natively working on the DSLRs is pretty neat but to be honest the EOS with the adapter also sounds like a solid experience. Did you happen to get the adapter with the AF confirm chip?
@@Mr50mmish nope, i had to sand off a little nub so it would work with my film EOS and that's my only full frame camera. Ofc my adapter has some weird issues with mirror collision with my takumar 35mm with my film EOS so i don't think I have the *best* adapter, I have another with an adjustable ring but i can't quite get it right either. That's why getting a pentax body souunds so cool, because the lens compatibility.. but idk, I think I have other needs that would be better served with a full frame mirrorless at this point. Especially since i want video too..
@corgiverse9550 ah damn that sucks to hear you got issues with the adapters.
I own and use a K3 II and is is a fantastic camera that produces exceptional images. I love shooting all sort of photography with it including macro.
Been a Pentax user for years. I think they make a fantastic product but let’s face it, this camera is clunky and ugly.
Haha I prefer the term utilitarian.
Yes. The K-3 is a nice camera. I have a K-3II. It performs a hair better than the K-3 in terms of SR & AF.C, but in all reality, unless you do a thorough side by side test, most people won't notice the performance difference between them. The main difference is trading the K-3 flash for a K-3II GPS unit. I much prefer the GPS. It comes in handy when traveling & one can do astrophotography without star trails quite easily. Then there's the newer K-3III that totally blows any Pentax body before it in terms of autofocus performance, but that's a story for a different day. 😝
Haha yeah I think I'd prefer the GPS as well I almost never use the pop up flash but I do like doing Astro stuff on occasion. Haha yeah the K3 III sounds like it's AF system has seen a biggggg improvement!
Unexpected? Pentax has been making high-end quality cameras since before you were born.
Haha this is true, but that doesn't mean all their current cameras are by default excellent. Anywho if you watched the intro you might have got the context behind the title. Given I generally haven't enjoyed the K-5 I wasn't expecting to like the K-3 as much as I did.
I think a true Pentaxian is someone who is committed to the brand and doesn't sell off all their Pentax gear in some hissy fit, as I've seen on many occasion. I switched to Pentax after owning a couple of other brands and a ton of research. The strengths of the system are the lenses with 3D pop like FA limiteds, and DA* lenses, plus the All Weather capability of their weather sealed bodies and DA* or DFA* lenses. Pentax weather sealing is the real deal with silicones seals, whereas the other brands use the flimsy "Foam Rubber" seals which are porous and degrade quickly. You can search the website where they dismantle cameras to inspect the weather sealing, and its a shocker when you see the Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Sony cheap a** foam rubber seals. Foam rubber seals are used in concreting, when you make a footpath or driveway next to your house slab, and it acts like an expansion joint, but its very cheap material. Or you've gotten into Pentax for Astrotracer and bought an astrotracer unit, or camera body with built in astrotracer. Pentaxians are Pentax users who: 1. Buy FA limiteds for the 3D pop and Leica build quality, and Leica image quality with that 3D pop. 2. Buy DA* or DFA* lenses with All Weather sealing for use in the nastiest rain. Even WR handles bad rain. 3. Buy Astrotracer unit or body with it built in and do astro photography. 4. Buy and use M42 manual Pentax Takumar lenses particularly the 8 element 50mm 1.4. 5. Buy old Pentax film cameras like the legendary LX or MZ-S, and use Takumars or FA limiteds and other lenses. 6. Buy a Pentax camera body for AA filterless and IBIS (most other brands still use AA filters). 7 Buy a Pentax camera for the amazing image quality, and pair it with one of the above. Lets say I bought into Canon, what does Canon have that other brands don't have? Maybe a 50mm 1.2 lens, and maybe okay video with AF. What about Nikon? Z mount now have f1.2 lenses. What about Sony? Well Sony is on the bleeding edge of technology, and thats why you'll go with Sony, plus they've got more lenses AND Zeiss lenses. What about Fuji? There is no point to Fuji, dials are regressive, and zooms and prime lenses have no full frame upgrade path. The big three are almost the same except for Sony with Zeiss 3D pop lenses, and you're not getting any of them for their porous weather sealing where battery compartments and bottom plates aren't even sealed. Yeah you might put vintage lenses on from Canon and Nikon and thats about all she wrote.
I got into the 6MP DSLR Club, on the pentax forums. Kind of been happy in this niche. Old ist* and K100Ds... Can get them for $20 at yard sales still, some on estate sale finds. Happy with the handicap to make decent photos; requires to know the subtleties of the camera way more than modern gear. It's a positive challenge.
Awesome review. Your videos have become more sophisticated and your personality is really shining in this video.
Thanks! Yeah this one was one of the more recently recorded stuff. Haha I believe I have 1 or 2 videos in the pipeline that were done a bit before some of the bigger format tweaks. But rest assured hopefully they are going to more or less keep improving. Just a bit of buffer clearing to give me some breathing room for the holidays :)
I've only used Pentax film cameras - a Spotmatic, the K1000 and a P30X, the latter of which didn't work well and kind of left a bad taste, but it's possible the issue was with my particular copy. That being said, I kind of admire them for sticking to making DSLR's, and there are some very nice Pentax pictures on Flickr. I could see myself getting one eventually.
Ah that's too bad about the experience with the P30x. It actually seems like a neat retro future kind of camera design. Kind of like the Canon T50. Yeah I'm glad there is still a company left in the DSLR game. OVFs are just a different experience. If you get one let us know which one it is!
Pentaxian? That sounds a little high church. As a lapsed Pentax user mostly from the film period, any opinion may be heretical. Guy who posted in front of me worships at the Asahi altar. Probably one body and lens qualifies. Captured some nice stills Mr 50mm. Ducks were pretty chill too. Cheers Woody
Haha it does sound a bit High Churchy. Thanks!
As a long term user of the K3 I certainly enjoyed your ramble! I've had mine new since 2015 and it has never let me down. You're pretty spot on with your analysis of the camera IMO, though as to pricing I am not so sure. Compared to its contemporaries from Nikon and Canon, yes it is a bit more expensive and the continuous AF not so reliable, but it does bring other benefits, such as much nicer build quality and IMO better handling. Also Canon and Nikon's range of APSC glass is somewhat limited compared to Pentax and using old K mount glass on any Pentax is much easier than AI(s) glass on Nikon. The shake reduction system is also pretty effective, though not as good as modern mirrorless systems. It also has a wonderful built in flash, which the later K3 models ditched, which is very useful for fill in flash and close up - when combined with a lens mounted diffuser. The in camera RAW processing is the best I have used compared with Canon and Nikon, though admittedly many do not need this function. The menu system is at least as good as Canon's and way better than Nikon's. Finally it also has the wonderful TAV mode. Personally though I think the 24mp sensor is a bit of a stretch for the camera. Yes it does provide extra resolution, but only at ISOs of 800 or less. The older 16mp sensor of the K5 is much nicer across the ISO range of 200-3200 than the later 24mp sensor. The KP manages the higher MP sensor much better than the K3, but then you have to put up with an even higher price and less than ideal handling. 16 MP is more than enough for web use and prints up to A3. This is of course highly subjective but I consider the older 16mp produces nicer tonality overall, This is not unique to Pentax. I also consider Fujifilm's 16MP sensor nicer than their later, higher MP ones. The real bargains of the Bayer sensor Pentax cameras are the AA filtered K5, K5ii, K30 and K50 and if you don't want an AA filter the KS-2. All of these cameras are really nice to use. Make sure though if you want a K30, K50 or KS-2 to allow for an solenoid replacement in your budget as they are apt to need one. Sometimes though you can find one with the fix already having been done (like I did with my K30) at no additional cost. Regarding lenses. The Pentax APSC range is big compared to Canon and NIkon. I guess that would be because Canon and Nikon really wanted you to buy expensive FF glass for their FF cameras. As Pentax came late to the FF game they made a number of APSC lenses which are really nice - such as the DA Ltd's (buy the older SMC ones rather than the HD ones as they are significantly cheaper) and compact. Those screw drive lenses although relatively noisy also mean that they can stay small as there are no motors in them (which also means they are less likely to fail). With no lens stabilisation (relying on that built into the camera), the DA 18-135 f4-5.6 is a wonderful do it all lens. It is light and compact and can be had reasonably cheaply. As a package a K5 or K3 with this lens compares more than favourably with the Fujifilm X-T1, 2 or 3 with its 18-135mm in terms of size and weight. When viewed this way the main advantage of mirrorless - it's smaller size - is diminished somewhat.
I had Pentax film cameras a ME SUPER & a ME SUPER PROGRAM I bought my first Pentax DSLR in 2005 a *istDL and a year later I sold my film cameras in 2006 I bought my son a Pentax K100D for a trip to Europe in 2014 I bought a Pentax K50 a camera I really liked and convinced son to buy one . In 2018 I took a trip to Yellowstone National Park I was worried about apature block failure as my sons K50 had failed on him so I bought a K70 for the trip and gave him my K50 for his K100D in trade. In 2020 my K70 experienced aperture block failure I found a used K3-11 and bought it and have no problems with it in 2023 I bought a slight used K3 Mark III camera i use it mainly for wildlife photography with it's better autofocus system. In 2022 i bought a Spotamatic SP11 camera system with a set of Takumar lenses i left the camera in a backpack and finally in June 2024 I decided to try the Spotamatic when the Pentax 17 half frame film camera came out I perfer a full frame interchangeable lens camera over a half frame camera the Spotamatic needed new light Seals and using the recommendations from David Hancock video i replace the light Seals and the first roll of film all my pictures came out i was surprised they were in focus and properly espoused considering I had not shot film since 2005
@@scrptwic I went back to shooting a lot more film last year too. My inspiration was the K 3 iii Monochrome. I could not justify the price! How much B&W film can you shoot before you reach that dizzying figure? LOL. What was interesting was how good for normal usage in normal light levels film actually is. Even cheap Kodak Gold in cheap PAD compact cameras produces perfectly adequate results for web use and modest enlargements -say 10"X 8". HP5 Plus and XP2 Super produce lovely quality images I would have no hesitation printing to 18" X 12". Plus they have that lovely grain texture you get with film. There is a quick fix for the aperture block failure which sometimes works - put the camera into burst mode and fire off for a second or two, but if that does not work I don't think it costs that much to get the aperture block fixed. I have heard around $100. Even if you do not get it fixed the camera is still usable with K and M mount, and A mount if using the aperture ring, in manual mode with the green button. So all is not lost.
@richardhale9664 I had the apature block fixed i set the camera to Oregon they do a good job it's a bit more expensive than $ 100.00 with shipping & insurance but worth the money on a K70 not so sure on a K50 . Using the burst mode is at best a temporary fix because the problem soon returns unfortunately I can't understand why Richo used inferior products like a bad solenoid and the SDM Motor in there lenses for so long as the glass is outstanding the motors not so much
So needed this advice, thanks
Thanks for watching!
I have the Fuji XT1 as a picture profile on my Nikon D5500 and Nikon D5600.
Nice!
My dude are you going to talk about the new firmware and the pay walls for them now I certainly hope so that is a critical part anymore for a camera that was purchased on this case created 8 years ago and just now a month ago just put five functions behind a paywall I highly suggest you talk about that
I can't seem to find any ref to a paid firmware upgrade for the K3, I did see one for the K1 series though and it's a shame they'd make the astro-tracer assist stuff paid. Anyways do you have a link to the Paid K3 one?
Not true. You're talking about the mark 3. There isn't any paywall for the K3 original, just check their website and see for yourself.
Nice video was always but whatever you do do not upgrade the firmware at any cost because it will cost you
Thanks, do you happen to know which specific firmware is the troublesome one?
Bought the K3 when it first came out in 2013/4! It's a great workhorse with one of the best button layouts I have used on a dslr. The Kx was my gateway to Pentax.
Me too!!! Still have my Kx
You are in all the clubs! Last month I just bought my first Pentax camera, the K-1 mark ll. And from what I have heard there is a trinity of "Limited" prime lenses for the full frame Pentaxes, which all true Pentaxians should strive to own. None for me yet.
Haha yay! Dang the K-1 Mkii that is an awesome entry into Pentax! One day, gotta get em all!
K-5 K-30 & K-200D here. The weather sealing and sub-zero operability is a major factor for me. Thx for your talk.
Yeah it's great how many of their bodies have weather sealing! Thanks for watching!
Nikon D80 have a screw driver
Yeah, haha I realized after I published the video. Thanks though!
If you shoot manual lenses the rear AF button is kind of useless.
Haha can't disagree with you there.
I have both the K5IIs and the K3. Great cameras. Will never sell.
Awesome! They are very nice cameras!
The K-3 was the camera that brought me back to Pentax. I started with Fujifilm X system and had most of their top-end lenses. My parents had an old Pentax film camera when I was a kid and for some reason, this drew me to try out Pentax DSLRs. I started with the K-5 and some other older ones but eventually sold them. I found a deal on a K-3 with lenses including the Tamron 90mm Macro. I was blown away by it ESPECIALLY the experience of shooting macro through a big bright optical viewfinder. I have never experienced such a thing before. Anyways, due to being loyal to Fujifilm, I eventually sold the K-3. Welp, I missed it. I missed the feel, the handling, the ergonomics, the image quality, etc. This is what lead me to start saving up for a K-1 which I did and I bought it brand new. No regrets. Eventually I sold all my Fujifilm gear and invested more on great Pentax AF film era lenses which I can use with my film bodies like the Pentax LX. I really couldn't be any happier. Pentax's backwards compatibility is next to none. Even small things like the IR remote from the 80s can still be used with modern cameras. Not only this but some battery grip have holders for the IR remote control! Eyecups, adapters, and many more accessories are all backwards and forwards compatible. Nowadays, I shoot with Pentax (digital and film) and have a plethora of Pentax and Takumar lenses. My second system is the Sony E mount if I need fast AF. I am planning to get the Monster Adapter LA-KE1 eventually. Tip: If the K-3's viewfinder, although its really good, is not big enough, I highly recommend the O-ME53 which will make the magnification almost as big as the Pentax K-1. The O-ME53 is also compatible with the K-1 so it will make the viewfinder even bigger!
Nice! The K-1 sounds awesome. It's on my list of cameras to get. If you do get the Monster adapter let us know how it is! I'm always interested in these. I actually ended up getting the older Techart Leica M adapter and just buying m adapters for other systems to give them AF but it would be cool to get electronic communication to the Pentax lenses! Ah I tend to be mostly good with APS-C OVFs. I think the only time I had a problem with brightness or size was the Sony A390 haha that OVF is truly awful.
One of the many great features of the K3 III is a new great viewfinder, it's enormous.
@@Mr50mmish "The K-1 sounds awesome. It's on my list of cameras to get." The K1 is indeed awesome. It is beautifully engineered and constructed. It handles wonderfully. It produces images of stunning tonality. There are a couple of buts though. The AF is not as good as Canon's and Nikon's when it comes to tracking and low light accuracy. It's also a big heavy beast. In height and width not so much but certainly back to front, as it has to accommodate the articulating screen and shake reduction system. If AF and size/weight are a consideration, I would suggest that many of the FF offerings from Canon and Nikon are a better choice. If not, then the K1 is an almost perfect camera. All of my previous comments about Pentax compared to Nikon and Canon apply other than the fact that when it comes to FF glass both of those systems have plenty of choice and when it comes to modern AF glass more so. As I shoot mostly APSC Fujifilm, Pentax or 35mm film when just out and about these advantages of the Canikons do not apply to me. I use my K1 for planned landscape and still life. It is truly wonderful for these roles and a joy to use.
These are wonderful cameras. I had the K5 mk.2. Most able Back Pack camera ever. Weather sealed. Dual dials, Magnesium alloy build. Small and light still. Tough as nails too.
Cool vid! K3 has its crowd. The K3 mkII cost as much as the full frame. But it maybe about as nice as an APC camera can be.. I recently bought a new KF. Wanted one after the performance from the Ricoh g3 making me curious and needing something robust. Pentax does make killer cameras but they all seem to be rather niche. Love mine!
The K-F is a great camera! I have the K-70 myself. I sold my K-3 because the K-70 beats the K-3 in many ways including IQ and AF.
Yeah the new K3 variants are quite pricey. The KF seems like a pretty sweet option overall. How do you like your KF so far?
@@Mr50mmishit’s been great, even with the “cheap lenses”. I wanted the weather sealing and smaller size. On paper it can be seen as outdated but it’s a great camera.
@tfresh99 nice! That's good to hear.
I have been thinking about Pentax. I believe it has great adaptability to vintage manual lenses, like the M42. Thank you for the great video, enjoy your new camera and take beautiful memories.
It's a really good system. There's a reason why users turn to diehard fans.
Thanks! Yeah if you are after old K or m42 lenses it doesn't get better than the modern Pentax DSLRs, especially if the OVF is a priority!
If you do get to K3 or any of the other one slightly above it on numbers do not repeat do not for any reason update the firmware The last two updates are now behind paywalls
@@cgriggsiv I found the firmware you are talking about it's only on the K3 Mk III and K1. It doesn't lock out any old functions. But it does put 3 new functions behind a paywall. There are extra astrotracer functions that are now paid extras. These do not apply to either K3 or K3 MkII.
*ist dl2 was my first interchangeable lens camera system and I have a collection of k mount lenses, camera has since been stolen, and I've moved on to K-m and K200D, both body has some power issues and became a picky battery eater especially as the NiMh rechargeable batteries age but I still love them. My K-m is setup to do macro duty and the camera can be very slow to output a single jpeg if you use all the in-camera effects, where as K200D is kept general purpose and shoots reasonably fast.
Ah that sucks about their power issues. Have you looked into Lithium Ion AA packs? I ended up switching all my AA powered cameras to those and they tend to last very long and a some of the packs even have little usb charge ports integrated into the AAs for easy charging!
@Mr50mmish I've yet to try those, thanks for the tip
Congrats on the great deal. Yes IMO this latest acquisition puts into the Pentaxian club! The only Pentax camera I've ever owned was a Spotmatic a few decades ago. Still have the 50mm 1.4 Super-Takumar though! :D
Haha yay! Oh the 50mm F1.4 Super Takumar is awesome!
Bit of a D200 vibe, nice.
Haha yup! I think the K-3 might be the Pentax equivalent!
I have a couple of A100's, when for some unknown reason, my first one stopped working, I found a cheap replacement that came with charger, remote, several batteries and cf cards, then the original came back to life. So the burst rate is pants and there's no live view, but it works well with my adapted cheap vintage manual lenses. I still consider the a100 the best of the bunch. nice video.
Thanks! Haha, always good to have some backups! Sounds like you got a nice package! Yeah the A100 definitely steals the show for overall goodness in the Sony APS-C line up.
I have a D200. I'm amazed by the CCD craze. It's a good camera. No doubt. Is it better than a D300? Not even close. You can get a D300 for less money. Our world is a mystery that makes zero sense. If you get one, you'll get a good camera, but you can do so much better. There's a reason they don't sell CCD sensors now. The D200 is an energy hog. Buy extra batteries.
Haha true. D200 is still fun though. Yeah the craze driving the D200 prices higher than D300 is nuts. Actually the neat thing about the EN-EL3 batteries is there is a variant that has integrated USB-C charging on the pack so it can be topped up while out. That said I haven't yet run down a new pack on the D200 in a single photo walk so I don't find the drain that bad, but yeah it would be worse than the pretty efficient D300 looking at some comparisons the D200 is expected to get under 400 shots on a fresh pack while the D300 can get upto 1000.
Having had a D3 when it came out then trying Fuji mirrorless which I was never really that taken by I bought a 1Dx a few years ago and I love it along with 24-70 f2.8 mkii and 100-400mkii .it just gets everything right every time with superb lenses to match.love it.
Nice, that sounds like an awesome lens pairing to go with it!
I buy a few days ago My 1Dx, a littel lucky 15.000 < Schutter. Regards Stephan
Congratulations! Hope you are enjoying it, less than 15000 clicks is really quite good!
@@Mr50mmish yes, bnow t Weather is always b here in North-Germany, Rain and Foggy...
@StephanPluemer ah that's too bad. The fog could be good for some dramatic photos though!
@@Mr50mmish yes thats right, but i hav to work, its dark, windy rainig and Cold brrr, i have a little time ;)
@StephanPluemer ah that's too bad. Hopefully you have some time in the near future to enjoy it, and hopefully the winter is short!
Honestly, I prefer the d80 because it is light and compact and has the essential functions but also convenient automatic controls. It's very easy to find it with a few clicks and it costs little. The D200 is heavier, more expensive and with a number of functions that are difficult to remember and almost useless to the photographer who thinks about the images and not the camera.
That's fair. If you like it for its compactness. I do think it's unfair to downplay the importance of ergonomics. Plus I'm not sure what other functions the D200 has that are "difficult to remember" and "almost useless". The key difference between the 2 for me were the D80s inability to meter manual F mount lenses, important for buyers who want to use older lenses. Plus the D80s slightly worse ergonomics. With the D80 needing to use the side menu buttons as dual function buttons where the D200 had dedicated ones that were placed in a way that could be actioned quicker. Both are otherwise fine cameras to play with.
@@Mr50mmish I agree with you but today I believe there is no longer a need to use old lenses. Almost 20 years have passed now and excellent modern lenses can be found at low prices. Not even my F80 can mount the old lenses and it was still film.
A great video, i have a new buyed in 2008 with the 50mm lens, and for travel light buy a Tamrom A18 28 to 250 m.m. y use for my work in proyects of High Tension Lines and sub-Stations and for fun. The CCD brings a clear and nitid colours and and the pictures have light weight in Mb. My camara have 10000 shoots aprox. is a younger yet. Here in Chile have many weather and conditions, i work over 4800 meters over the sea and the K10D take pictures easily .The heavy rain, the mud and dirth no damage the K10D, best regards from the corner of the world.
Thanks! Always nice to hear from a long term user of the camera! That is awesome! Sounds like it has taken photos everywhere and that you have put those weather seals to use! Awesome!
god you don't know how to shoot. Grade your Raws
Elaborate. Feedback is appreciated if it's useful.
@@Mr50mmish I've taken way better photos with a d80. you have to play to the strengths, create color seperation from the ccd. and do the digital dark room process to punch above it's wight
Cant see that you have had an answer to your question - the D3S sensor was manufactured by Panasonic
The previous Canon D30 was my first DSLR, bought with the venerable EF 28-135mm kit lens. It was a very comfortable and intuitive camera to use, and I used it a lot. I don't think I ever used anything other than focus-recompose and I didn't really have any complaints about the speed. I never used the 60D, though; I waited a little while and upgraded to the 10D instead.
Ah nice. The D30 is a neat piece in Canon history. Maybe it's just me I found the D60 AF just a hit more hesitant to move than on the 30D, I might just be impatient.
My first DSLR in 2005. Started using it again and it's great. I treat it like a film camera
It's great to hear that you still have it!
I use the canon xsi and it has a similar setup to this but slightly updated. Still blows iphone pictures out of the water
Nice pictures! I literally paid $30 USD for the last 20D I bought. I wanted a backup since I like it so much. I also enjoy the XT and XTi which are much easier to carry, but my favorite is the 40D. I've used that camera a lot for years.
Nice that is a great deal! That is fair the Rebel line is considerably lighter!
what cf card are you suggesting? and can you use an "sd to cf" card adapter? i got a ton of sd cards.
I haven't really had any issues with most CF cards. Sandisk or Lexar are my go to brands. Yes SD to CF adapters are an option as well! I do use them for other cameras and haven't had issues!
Happy new year! I started with a Pentax K1000 back in the 80's. My first digital body (for a short time) was the Kodak DCS 720x and then finally the Nikon D70. 📸
Happy new year to you too! K1000 still awesome film SLRs to this day!
Great review and happy NewYear Chris. I don't really understand what the deal is with CCD craze. This old CMOS gives glorious colors and you can always tweak them to look like coming from a crappy ccd point and shoot. But you are right, the feel of this camera is a little cheap compared with the 20d. Not suitable for efficient and comfortable shooting.
Thanks, Happy new year! The CCD craze is a neat thing, I'm trying to do a video on technical reasons why the CCD was initially more favorable to CMOS, but given the pace of development behind CMOS the technology rapidly outpaced CCDs. The recent resurgence is probably more to do with age than anything, sometimes it feels like there are some that mistake any old camera with CCDs, (commonly 5Dc and D700). The days of manufacturers getting to grips with color science and choosing vibrant colors over accurate ones and trying to figure out how to best capture an image with the comparatively lower bit depth of those old sensors. But yeah back to the XT, for the ergonomics I'm more likely grab my 30D! That and I think I have a small mountain of BP-511 batteries and only have the 2 XT ones.
@@Mr50mmish These old rebels may look like toys but aren't. My old GF, a successful designer of jewelry from Sweden, got a heavily used, battered canon 450d from me 12 years ago and is still using it to shoot and advertise her products. What i'd discarded as essentially junk, she is making good money from :) and uses just a kit lens!
I was wondering if we can still register for the free captureone if we are using Phase One. I currently have a phase one P25 and I am not able to register. I am not sure if the serial number at the bottom of the device is what we need to fill in because I tried to fill it in but I am having trouble. Can you please advise?
Ah yes you can still get Capture One for Phase backs you have to register through the Phase One support. I believe you can first register the back then open a software ticket and then they should be able to provide you a key to activate Capture One. The support link is below: support.phaseone.com/
