I have the AF-D version. I'm still using it with great joy on my D700 and D800. On the D800 with the 36 MP it's plenty sharp. The lens is kind of a little gem and an excellent performer.

    My first full frame I bought the d600 (couldn't afford the d800) and always wished for the 800 with it's extra mega pixels... Someone at the camera group I attended had one. I spent years getting mostly second hand glass together.
    Few years later I got the D810 and have been using that for 7-8 years solid, until a few months ago. It was a massive upgrade over the d600.
    I only just moved to the Z8 (which by the way, feels like cheating compared to the D810.)
    Bells and whistles aside, the few extra pixels are barely noticeable. You have auto focus/tracking on the eyes, 4K 60 video (8 really, but who uses it) and much better low light performance. The eye piece screen seems really gimmicky until you try it, although you could argue it's a glorified "live preview" function the D810 had. Those are the only features I could really argue set this apart from the 810 and it's a lot of money for it. I'm sure other people will like the 20fps RAW, but there's almost no situation you'll use this, for this equals time wasted at the end deleting hundreds of photos.
    I realise your videos about the 800, but this line of cameras is (and always was) my favourite, and the z8 looks almost identical anyway, to the point your family and friends won't notice the difference, which is good because you don't have to justify the cost to anyone but yourself.
    If it weren't for the cost of glass, I'd recommend the old d800/810 as starter cameras. The mirrorless transition means that second hand glass has never been cheaper for Nikon as well, another reason to give the 800/810 extra life

      I do agree when it comes to just photography the D8x0 series is very hard to beat and if speed and video aren't a concern I would still recommend it most of the time. Since as you said with the new Z mount many F mount lenses are getting cheaper and are still excellent!

      @marcusgrandon3640 I decided and kept mine as well. Ive put the 28-300mm lens on it. Before I got the trinity lenses, I'd use that setup all the time.

    I used a D800 frequently when they were new, but didn't own it. Focus was sluggish and always seemed to favor the bright points anywhere except where I wanted if I used any of the area modes. I almost akways used AF-S and selected single point mode. Expreed 3 processor bodies were a host of compromises, but at the time it seemed like a remarkable camera afterbusung a D100, D70, D200, and D700 previously. About 7 years ago I found a D800 in a pawn shop. Picked it up for $500. I was disappointed because Expeed 4 cameras were already well established and has much cleaner high ISO images, improved autofocus, more useful video features, and native WiFi. I was already used to these on D7200 and D750 so that's where comparison is the killer of joy. The D800 is still a valued part of my kit for events and weddings. Where it has been most valuable to me is legacy lens support. If i found a sweetheart deal on a D810, i would drop the D800 like a low gear.

    I can't seem to make up my mind. Looking to get my first Nikon DSLR and I think I want to go full frame, if only to narrow down the selection :P
    There's some hype around the D700 but really I seem to lean more towards the D600/D610 or the D800/D810. My biggest concern with the latter is size. I fear that if it's too big I may not want to lug it around as much, but maybe good ergonomics can make up for that. I may not pull the trigger until after Christmas but am eyeing a couple of deals from a store out of Montreal. There's a D610 and a D800E, both including battery grips and rated at 7/10, just under $500 each. You did mention the size difference between the two but any additional thoughts on how the shooting experience compares?

      Maybe look at the D750 as well. They are about as small and light as a full frame DSLR can be and a fantastic camera.

    • @Mr50mmish
      @Mr50mmish  หลายเดือนก่อน

      When it comes to ergonomics I do overall prefer the D800 over the D600, there are a few more controls that can be rapidly changed by dedicated buttons and the viewfinder in the D800 is just better, more data, more functions (better virtual horizon).
      The one place where it has it beat is the more conventional mode dial. I don't mind the way the D800 does it but I do like a normal one.
      Both to me feel solid in my hands and given the usually chunky primes I use the weight offset of the heavier D800 doesn't bug me.
      I do admit the chunk of the D800 does actually mean there are a few bags that I have that straight up don't fit it where the D600 will just fit.
      So yeah in short I do think the generally better ergonomics offset the extra chunk.

    • @HoggetBlanker
      @HoggetBlanker หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PJ-om2wq While I appreciate the recommendation, there are two reasons why I'm not considering the D750 at this time. The first is that the price jumps up for that model and I have a limited budget. The other is that I've heard the D750 was plagued with multiple recalls, so there are concerns about picking up a unit that may not have been sent back for fixing more than once or twice. Then again, the problems were probably addressed in manufacturing at some point and might have become non-issues later in production, but I don't know that's a coin flip I want to bet on.

    • @PJ-om2wq
      @PJ-om2wq หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@HoggetBlanker The recalls only affected the very early D750s. This was one of the most popular wedding photographers cameras and one of the reasons was its utter reliability. Prices are still quite high though, that's true.

    • @danncorbit3623
      @danncorbit3623 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For wildlife, the D800 is the clear winner because you can crop in more. Lots of times, that little bird is too far away even with your longest lens. If you want to make portraits, there is no discernable difference. So I think it depends on what you want to do. I find that I use my D800 more often than my D600 or D610 but I do more wildlife than anything else. But (for instance) for landscape I would maybe give the D610 the edge because I can load more images into my post processing software at once because the images are much smaller. I always shoot RAW at the highest resolution the camera offers, so that matters to me.

    I use still my D800 and my D810 when shooting digital - 99.xx% just with manual F mount AI/AIS NIkkors.
    I acknowledge some improvements made in sensor design, AF, mirrorless focus keeping display etc.|
    BUT: With capability to use all AI lenses and above it is not only lens cost efficient, it also allows to share those lens with analog a shooting + it allows to avoid all the plastic lenses for today.
    The only thing what it misses for me is the finder with split screen of an Nikon F4(s).
    Why I do not update to a Nikon Z:
    a) see above.
    b) I miss an even bigger jump is resolution. At moment only the Fuji GFX100s could fulfill this to some extend with reasonable price tag.
    But to be (self-)honest. I do not really need for most shots more than the 36 MP aside one use case: Camera scan of medium and large format film. That speaks for the Fuji GFX100s multishot feature to get 400 MP shots.

      Yeah I don't remember if I brought it up in the video but using manual SLR lenses on DSLR I personally find to be a nicer ergonomic experience than on a mirrorless camara, mainly because the weight is better distributed since the adapters for mirrorless tend to be rather long by the nature of matching flange distances.
      As for the resolution jump, yeah it's slowed down a bit, the pixel pitch seems to have flatlined, but we'll see what is in store for the future, It seems like it'd be more than possible to see another big jump if Sony is able to scale their 40mp APSC unit to full frame.

      Lens I am very happy I kept and updated firmware to use on Z is F mount Tamron SP 45mm f 1.8 Di VC USD. Would not work on Z without the update, and on FTZii on Z it now works very well. it is large but not too large. Good lens if you can find one at good price, for your D800 and a Z if you do get one.
      It was a fuss to learn best use of Zf due to its schizoid controls system. No User settings, sadly. Great 24 mp cameras. Body looks good, but is a brick and ergonomics are unrefined.
      Z7ii is also fine for my typical use. No action, sports, no grand landscapes, no wildlife around here! It is more like the DSLR in controls. Has 3 User settings. I have to get better software and monitor to make better use of the files. I think it demands better light or more careful settings than Zf, finding in shadowed streets downtown Manhattan , or grey/ hazy no contrast days of NYC.

    Hey Mr. 50mm. Thanks for the video. I've just bought a D800 with only 19000 shots, practically brand new. I was so amazed when I put an old 50mm AF lens I thought had no autofocus, and then suddenly it starts autofocusing with this camera. Fun fact, I was using this old AF NIKKOR 50mm 1:1.8 on a D3300 which has no in body autofocus system, so... hahahah Anyway, I was thrilled with the colors of this camera, and I bought and watched many reviews and I was reassured over and over again that buying this one was going to be the best transition to a pro full frame DSLR, attention, in the year of 2024! hahahah Btw, I see a Tamron there, can you tell which one is? I got myself a Tamron 70-300 VC and a Sigma 28-70 EX.

  • @danncorbit3623

    I have a D800e and I absolutely adore it. The D700 is a nice camera, but the cost of the D700 is like the cost of the Canon 5D. Collector prices, not photographer prices. I love it for almost any purpose. Absurd image quality and trillions of Nikon and aftermarket F mount lenses. Great for macro, for portrait, for landscape, for wildlife, for whatever you darn well like. I will never sell my D800e. If it dies, I will buy another one. I have a huge collection of Nikon F glass, from the ancient to the G lenses. I guess the shutter might be slow for some kinds of sports photography and if a bird is close and flying right at you, it is not ideal. But I don't feel that any of the minor shortcomings are much of a bother. The D600 and D610 are also great bargains. I do have big hands, so I always attach a battery grip. With a battery grip attached, if feels great in my hands. I do wish they had more custom lenses {in the menu}, because i have a lot of the old manual focus glass. There are enough to do my favorites, so maybe I am whining about nothing.
    Another similar set is the Canon 5D series. I have a 5Ds and two 5D Mark II cameras (one is an infrared conversion). Those have the same sorts of benefits as the Nikon group.
    A second benefit of these types of older DSLR cameras is film photography. My F lenses for the Nikon DSLR cameras work just as well on my Nikon F4, F5, and F100. Similarly my EF glass works both on my 5D cameras and on my Canon 1N HS cameras. As to why shoot film? For the fun of it, and the special things you can do with film. Put some Lomo Purple in there. Put some Adox CMS II in there. And film photography forces you to slow down and think more. I like the Canon 5D cameras better for video, but none of these cameras are world beaters for video. However, for some situations, like talking heads, they can produce professional results good enough for a youtube channel.
    I agree with the cost of F versions of lenses being cheaper than EF lenses.
    I never had any problem focusing with my D800e and my D600 has the shutter upgrade.
    Besides the somewhat lower cost of F glass, there is also the D lens bonanza. Some of the D lenses are absolutely stunning. The 60mm D macro lens is an absolute wonder and cheap as dirt. The DC lenses for managing background blur are still incredible for portraits. And at about $500-$600 on ebay the DC lenses are incredible bargains. By yourself a 180mm D lens, You won't be sorry. I bought four of them, in case they eventually break down and I can no longer service them. There are plenty of good Nikon F mount lenses that can be had at bargain prices. If you do buy on ebay, read the whole advertisement carefully and try it out right after it arrives to ensure it is working properly. Anyway, good post and I pretty much agree with everything.

      @@Mr50mmish The 5Ds is my favorite camera. You can crop like mad. The prices have fallen so far, I may buy another one for backup. Things that will bother some people: No pop up flash. No WiFi The pictures are gorgeous. The RAW files are really big, so you need a good computer to process them, especially if you do batches at a time. But why do you buy a camera? To take photographs. It has the Canon color science and those 50MP let you crop when you need to. Now, I have literally more than one hundred EF lenses, and I have adapters for old glass with EF lenses including the chips to verify focus. So I did not need to invest in glass. Don't take my word for it, look up other people who have used that camera and you will see that it is a wonderful instrument. I have given some away as presents but I think that the image quality of either camera (5D II and D800) is really fabulous. I like the DSLR direct image much better than digital viewfinders of the mirrorless cameras. My dots per inch is infinite. A thing to explore, if you are not afraid to take the risk, is to install the Magic Lantern software on your 5D Mark II camera. It gives all kinds of incredible abilities and makes it much more capable for video. Read up on it and see if it interests you. You will notice when you install it that there is no warranty for the Magic Lantern stuff, so if it bricks your camera, not their fault. I never had a problem, but like I said, for the adventurous sort.

    A lot of praise for a (certainly good) camera, but not backed up by numbers or examples (there is a chapter called Photo Gallery, but a YT presentation cannot be a basis for an evaluation). So the D800 may or may not have excellent high ISO, large dynamic range etc etc. All the video tells me is that Mr. 50mm is very satisfied, which means little to me. Easy, even though there were issues, it's hard to really say how many it affected, it does seem like it affected a specific batch, Nikon didn't do a general recall, but they did seem to take in units which got affected.
      If you have a specific figure to share please do. I wasn't able to tag a specific number on estimated affected units. So I'm not ready to paint the entire line as problematic.
      Generally otherwise they are excellent and it's not as if I glossed over that either. It was brought up in video and there is a link in the description on how to conduct a manual alignment. It's not very difficult.
