Funky bass line over a Dominant 7th chord
I made my own Nordy-inspired mute using one thickness of an old mouse pad, stiffened with a piece of plastic. The Nordy Mute appears to be thicker than mine, so it mutes more than mine does. If you want more muting, use two thicknesses.
Sounds cool I bet!
I’m getting one of these in that exact finish soon. It’ll be my first USA bass ever. You’re right about the pickup volumes not doing much past a certain point and that’s just one of Fender’s longtime quirks.
Great, best of luck with the bass!
I bought a Ray 24 CA but at first I was not impressed. I wanted the sound of the 70's funk and disco bands but it didn't really came out of the Ray 24. So I put the bass aside for some years. Recently I discovered that the stock humbucker was a ceramic one while the original 70's Stingrays came with alnico magnets. I changed the humbucker for a Seymour Duncan SMB-4A (wired in parallel) and WOW! What a sound! No need to buy a MM top model! You can get the real thing for an extra 120 $
I know but I kinda liked the stock pup!
I have both the white with maple neck and the green with rosewood neck workmanship very nice no sharp fret ends on either bass traditional tail piece , traditional neck , sounds like the jazz from years ago , for that’s what I really like the mid honk really sits well in the mix , heavy yes but. I expect that in a traditional jazz bass , I’m a small guy nearing 80 years young Lol but there’s a lot of wood in a jazz , I have a very good wide strap that spreads the weight well ,so it’s ok it sounds and does what it should do very well , simple bass with a classic sound. Thanks for your honest review.
Thanks Johnny if the weight doesn't bother you that's great. I know that Sandberg makes ultra light jazz style basses though I have yet to try one
Hi, can you give a suggestion which one is better? The BB434 or Squier Affinity PJ precision?
I prefer the BB but it's purely a matter of personal preference. Try them both and see which one fits for you.
we think alike
I have this in black…love it…my only thing is that I wish I had waited and got one of the 5HH ones (double humbuckers) I loved the sound from the 5HH more (I think) besides having more control over the pickups and having a lot more output
Hey Nicholas, actually I prefer the single humbucker. The sound is better in my opinion. Also, if you do a lot of slapping, that neck pickup gets in the way.
I played a Sterling Stingray 5 through the D800+ into the Mesa Subway 2x10 cab and loved it! Only thing is it was super expensive!
Some times you have to spend the money to get the sound that you want.
Great review as always Bob. If it's too heavy maybe you could do what that band "The Fearless Flyers" does - mount their guitars on a stand! 😊
Hey Bob, I've seen that. It's pretty cool but I think I'd prefer to go with a lighter model!
G'day Bob hope all is well, just a question do you run your amp controls flat ? and adjust tones on the stingray? Great video, cheers
Hey Mark, yes that's usually what I do
Cheers Bob most appreciated 👍🏻
I purchased the player 2 p Bass last week, $680.00. Weight wise, seems ok, compared to my 5 string. I find it has a bit of a metalic edge to the sound. I heard it on your examples too. Do you think its a function of bright rounds, or an adjustment.
I think it's the new rounds.
Love your walking bass lines
Thanks!
Thank you so much for reviewing this bass I suggested you try it and you followed through and your no nonsense approach is why I asked thanks Bob. Edit : If I remember correctly the Player Jazz ( Green Burst ) bass you previously reviewed was also about 9 - 10 lbs and the only difference between the 2 is the addition of rolled finger board edges and the return of Rosewood as a option
Glad I could help!
@@BobBlackBass You always do thanks again
❤❤❤
Congratulations On 2k subscribers!! Keep up the Amazing Work 😁
Thanks Barbie!
I use A/C open cell weather strip, you can get a 3 foot piece for $3 makes life supply of bass mutes.
Cool idea!
Nice bass I Harley Benton makes a similar bass ( passive only ) that seems to get good reviews at a very cheap price and they are plentiful
Good to know!
@@BobBlackBass It's called the MB 4 just in case you were wondering
I've only been playing for a few months I am starting out with a Fender Rumble it's a good beginner amp but I do hope to work my way up to a Markbass amp one day
Hey Mark, actually the Rumbles are quite good! Good luck with your journey!
@@BobBlackBass Thanks Bob
I have my eye on a Player II jazz bass I saw at GC I hope you get around to that one because I really like how you review basses straight no chaser 👍👏
Hey Marc, I'll try to do the player II jazz next week
@@BobBlackBass Thanks Bob 👍
@@BobBlackBass BTW Bob Squier is supposed to release a Affinity Series Active Jazz bass in December/January for less than 350 the least expensive active bass I know is the Sterling Ray 4 @ 379 and it's not terrible so I'm curious as to what Fender/Squier is going to offer for that price
I have a Player I that bought from a small local shop a month ago when they were clearing them out for $679. It’s the exact same color with the maple neck. The only difference is the maple is lighter on mine. I love the darker maple but the light looks great against the black and white body. Anyway it came with a free setup. The edges aren’t rolled but they feel fine. Seems like it was a great deal.
Sounds like a great deal! I love that color.
sounds great!! Awesome review as well! I maybe tempted to purchase... what do you think?
Hey Josh, thanks so much! Can't go wrong with a P Bass!
How do you like the rolled fingerboard edges?
Hey Sam, it felt very good.
It sounds wonderful!
Thanks Matt!
I compared one to a series 1 at Guitar Center. The new II had a lot fatter neck. They only had 1 of the new ones, so I'm wondering if this one was an odd-ball or the new normal for this model? The Player II Jazz felt no different than a Player I.
Hey Deb, I didn't notice any difference but didn't have them side by side. Interesting!
Nice! got my eye on one that's 8.3....8 1/2 is my cut off as well.
Awesome! Can't go wrong!
I actually like the players mine have Seymour Duncan’s I actually like the standard bridge much truer to my real 1957 P I think better than the pro II . I’m in my late seventies 81/2 pounds is fine ,and I’m a maple neck fan . Thanks for the review it definitely is a working man or woman’s bass does what it’s supposed to do sound solid in any kind of music .
Thanks Johnny, you're right on all accounts!
The band was hitting on all cylinders .
Thanks!
Thanks!
Great honest and thorough review. I love that you kept the sound of the room too. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Bob, I’m 74, I love that paint job. Enough about me. I have one, my band mates don’t like it. I love it, but I don’t play it in deference to them…….
Hey Thomas, it's time for a new band!
I have fallen in love with the flip top series by Ampeg.
Great for studio!
@@BobBlackBass Have you heard the new series the portaflex series? They sound great live also
I used to use Mark Bass heads. These days, I prefer to use a separate preamp into a power amp. I have several high quality preamps, eg Caveman audio BP1 & BAE 1073 DMP etc. Much better solution in my opinion.
Hey Brink, cool. Are you using a speaker cab or in ears
Hey Brink, cool. Are you using a speaker cab or in ears?
Hi, my preamps have DI outputs, so I can go through cabs and/or house PA. I haven’t got into in-ears yet, but they’re certainly something to consider.
Awesome video! Always appreciate your honesty. Have you tried a Genzler.
Hey Newgunguy, thanks and no I haven't tried one yet.
@@BobBlackBass I hear good things about the Magellan. 🎸
I use an mB121P combo with or w/o a 121 cab underneath. Once I got used to the tone controls it was mint, and my drummer said he can hear me better than any other amp, he's my younger bro and we been playing together for 40+ years.
Hey Bass Fresh, Yeah they are hard to beat!
Big Markbass fan after finally trying them. I went to the Guitar Center far away from me because they always have a lot of stuff, and they had damn near every Markbass product.
Hey Ryan, yeah they do sound great. Fingers crossed on the reliability.
I’m from Canada and here I use a Traynor SB500H amp and TC1510 cab which is a single cab with a 15 inch and 2 Ten inch woofers in it, both built right here in Canada and amazing quality and sounds amazing, not sure if Traynor products are available in your area but worth checking out if it is
I checked and you can get it here. I'll check it out if I can get my hands on one!
Great tone. Seems the Music Man basses (SBMM in this case) sound great with Mark Bass. What was your last amp?
Hey Christopher , my last amp was a mesa D800
Yep I love mine!
Awesome!
sponge wins
Yes, although the Nordy mute sounds great on my Stingray!
I recently bought this bass and I’m going to return it. I love the sound I get from it, but it seems the cable coming out of the input is a design flaw. It’s happening to you and it’s happening to me. 😢
Yeah I think it's a simple fix though Remove the imput jack and squeeze the two prongs. That should do it.
Good Video,Thx Bob! I wish Sterling would put out some more SB 14’s…I would be interested… It sounds Great🎶🎶
I think I saw them for sale on Thoman.

Great to hear!
Love your videos Bob also love your Oswald shirt!
Thanks!
Great stuff dude! Thank you!!!
Glad you liked it!
You said the pick ups are really hot a few times. Is that bad?
Hey Tracy, it's not necessarily bad but does take some getting used to.
thank you more videos like this pls
Hey Mighty Jerry, I like teaching and if you look at some previous videos you will find some of this content. Unfortunately I don't get a lot of views when I make instructional content. I get way more views from doing gear reviews.
