I missed the deal on the Joe Dart guitar but happy to see that in 2025, they've started to make them again. I'm very much a fan of passive basses and glad you've done this review. I prefer the body shape here and the tone of that pickup is lush. Thanks for your comments, Bob.
Hey, you're welcome. I noticed that they are selling the sb14 again for a lot less than I paid for it!
Ps I subbed your channel!
Im not really hearing much change in the controls. I think, for me, Id rather have a jazz bass with a PJ than a P bass with a pj. Despite the pickups, the P bass always has a honk that you just cant get rid of
Hey JLP, that's true but a lot of recording engineers want that Pbass sound. I went into a studio with my Stingray and they took it away and handed me a P bass.
@BobBlackBass I can understand that. For live gigs I can't hear myself over a loud drummer. I need that back pickup sound to cut thru But P Bass is great for recording. I even like using my Fretless PJ (Tony Franklin) for recording. It mixes well but can stand out too when needed.
I like it. Nice overview, to the point and useful.
Glad you liked it!
Love the sound, but the height made lost interest, I had a Fender jazz deluxe MIM that was really light
I agree. They need to do something about the weight
Just bought one….cant wait to get it. Love the green.
Nice choice!
@ well the seller backed out. Looking at the 75th Anniversary Precision.
Bought one similarly to the one you showed. Bought used for 479.00 , the only thing I changed besides strings was the volume pot. It had no variant, either nothing or fulll volume. Love this bass. Love schecter.
Nice! Glad you're loving the bass.
The old man does some of the best bass reviews on TH-cam.
Thanks!
That was very helpful information. Thank you! I’ve been playing bass for a decade now on a Squier Jaguar PJ, but finally feel like my skills warrant a new instrument. I’m 99% sure that the Player II Precision Bass is that instrument. So it’s extremely valuable to get insight on it from a more experienced and advanced bass player than myself. THANK YOU!!!
Hey Bbqvibest, I'm glad to help! Good luck with your new bass!
Happy New Year, and thanks for the review and demo! On actual build quality I've ONLY heard the opposite, everyone says the Yamahas (inlc. Bb434) got some of the best and most consistent buid quality, and aren't cheap feeling, so that's interesting you felt that way. I hear more mixed reviews on the sound though. Some ppl really love it, others say it sounds flat/lacks "character". I don't feel it sounds bad, but i can kind of tell what they're saying. I've been of the fence about the 434 for a while....
Hey Combo friend, Happy New Year to you and thanks for the feedback!
They send the light wood to the custom shop so you can get one for $4500 bucks 😮
Hey Nicholas, haha I think you're right!
Dig the vid Bob!
Thanks, Halos and!
I very much prefer the truss rod adjustment at the heel. It's the American way after all! Seriously though, I'm bad about stripping out the allen wrench nut adjustment at the headstock on typical MIM Fenders. Using a flathead at the heel I can usually adjust there without having to remove the neck. Might have to remove the pickguard though, which is pretty easy on a J Bass. As you well know though, it's a mostly period correct copy of Flea's 1961 J Bass which certainly has the adjustment at the heel. For some reason the truss rod seems more stable with a heel access. I don't know why that would be though. Either way, I enjoyed the review and your playing is great! Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback! I enjoyed playing this one.
Cool dude
Thanks, Xodgilla!
do the performer pj bass
Hey Robert, I will if I can get my hands on one
Great demo!! I enjoyed hearing your review on this!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Picked this bass a while ago but the 5 string version… absolutely love it!! I was playing on a Marcus miller p7 before but man this bass sounds & feels better. (The Ibanez is cheaper also) but this bass is killer u can get so many sounds
Enjoy!
Just got that same bass waiting for it to come in
Hey Dealer, I'm sure you'll enjoy.!
I can’t stand the sound of the Musicman ceramic pickups. To aggressive. I swap mine out for Alnicos which have a more natural and versatile sound. If your into guitars it’s like comparing a Dimarzio Super Distortion pickup to a vintage PAF
Hey new1, I agree!
Hi Bob , love your videos , did you get the BBP 34 ? Did you keep it ? 😊
Hey Paul, no not yet.
Out the factory, the pickup is wired in series. The class music man wired in parallel. I got this same bass and wired it the traditional way, parallel and it sounds so similar to my 1979 music man stingray. Try it out, it’s a simple modification.
Hey Fluky, thanks for your input. I'm aware of that modification. On that bass I actually liked the sound wired in series. I think a great idea would be to have a series parallel switch.
@ yes, that’s what I did on mine. I used a 250k push/pull potentiometer volume. I prefer the parallel but I can switch on the fly, depending what the music calls for and my mood 😂
I had one. Great sustained, comfortable, nice sound. Sold him. Missed it.
Hey Genson, I think it's ok but I think that there is better out there in that price range.
@ bought Japan Fender Tomomi jazz bass for same price. It’s not worse than Flea.
Nice but I can't stop wondering about the use of a passive music man.
Hey Laurent, I really dig the sound. It's a funk machine! Joe Dart uses a passive Music man
Whoever is responsible at Fender for the trus rod adjustment method and poorly designed trus rod tool for the Pro II isn't qualified to fry burgers at McDonald's much less make any decisions at Fender.
I agree.
Hi Bob, are you currently giving bass lessons? If so, I’m interested.
I am.
can you do a review of the Vintera 60s P?
If I can get my hands on one!
Upgrade the active preamp to an Audere classic and you got an incredible sounding bass.
That sounds like a great upgrade!
Hi Bob! new subscriber here, love your videos.. i've mixed opinions about these low-mid priced yamahas.. would you consider the overall construction quality to a mexican player bass?
Hey Javia, thanks for subscribing! In my opinion the quality is very similar.
I just got the 734a and have to say it is impressive. I can't believe the build quality, it reminds me of a EBMM BFR that I once owned.
I'd like to try that one!
All I use
Rocking a Revzilla shirt.😊
Ya man!
Bought one in the Aqua tone blue and have nothing but praise for this lovely guitar , superb.
Hey James, glad to hear!
I don't know you, but I can say we agree on strings.
Thanks, Jeff!
Andrew Gouche lived here in Seattle and I was able to know him a little, many mutual friends and bassists are a small community. Check out some of his vids. Total monster and tunes his 6 string MTD down to C. He’s in Vegas now.
Hey Tracy, yeah, I'm very familiar with Andrew and his work.
@ excellent! I’m new to your channel. I found you when researching the Sterling Sterling SB 14 I just bought on reverb. Stellar instrument that punches far above its weight
Bob, I like the Ernie Ball Cobalt Flat Wounds. I put them on my Ric. They are very bright like rounds. I’ve had them on for a couple of years. Still bright. The tension is good for the 33 1/4” Ric neck. Rounds on my Ric always seem floppy. Great flats! My gauge for the Ric is 40-60-70-95.
Awesome!
I put some of these on one of my basses but didn't like them cause they had a very sticky feeling. did this go away for you? I ended up removing them for labellas and I like them way more.
Hey Tony, I had no stickiness issues.
I had these on a fender p and no stickiness either. Sound and feel great. Just threw on some DR hi beams to switch it up.
great info. I like this Bass 🤩
Thanks. Enjoy!
I was looking for a set of flats to try out on my P/J ( I lean heavily on the P pickup ) and you convinced me to give these a try at my next sting change thanks Bob
Glad you found them helpful. Let me know how you like them!
Great review Bob. I'll have to give them a try.
Hey Night train, I don't think you'll be disappointed!
These are my Go-to Flats. Nice Bob.
Thanks Henry!
I love the sound, but do you notice rust developing on the strings?
Hey Mannisboy, I haven't noticed that yet.
Agree with you!!👍
Thanks, George!
I haven’t used the cobalt flats, I use the roundwounds, which I like. Have you tried LaBella low tension flats?
I have a set of the LaBella Low Tension Flats on an American Fender Professional Jazz II. They have that LaBella sound but are more pliable. Very comfortable to play.
Not yet.
Hey man! Nice video!! Is the neck glossy shiny or not?
Hey Steve, not glossy or sticky. Nice and smooth!
I prefer the player l series, I feel it has a less bright sound and more of a classic p bass.. call me crazy but I think the player l series is still the best in tone for professional recording and making a career in 2024
Hey True search, thanks for your input! You could be right!!
Love your reviews Bob, but disagree with you on this one. Pretty hard pressed to find a better bass at its price point or even beyond in my opinion. That said, keep up the great reviews, always enjoyable!
Hey Steve, I'm very glad that you like my reviews! It's okay to disagree! I want to try the 734 and the B34!
You're saying TOTAL versatility for 500.
Yup
I tend to steer away from basses with too many controls. If I’m playing live and have a tone dialed in then accidentally bump into them, it’s tough to get it back on the fly.
Hey Degeest, I understand what you're saying although sometimes it's nice to be able to boost some mids on the fly
I just saw that bass lol
Yes!
Great review as always Bob this bass is definitely on my radar but you didn't play it against a backing track still sounded good though Btw : I recently picked up a pre owned Squier Contemporary Jazz Bass as a birthday present to myself it's just under 9lbs very comfortable and plays great thank you for the review always straight to the point I appreciate that
Hey Marc, thanks. I forgot to play with a backing track. Old age setting in !
Happens to the best of us
Bob, you talk too much. You should play
