Thru hiking 'ruined my life'
My channel is zero tolerance for abusive comments. This is a semi-jokey video and some of you need to calm down. If you're going to put abusive comments, I suggest you don't waste your time as I'll remove them without engaging with you anyway. Thanks!
Okay you may have guessed this is toooottttalllyyyy tongue in cheek of course haha, but actually sort of accurate in a sense:
After hiking the Appalachian Trail and other trails like the West Highland Way I was left with some feelings when I got back into reality/my everyday life: That these trails had RUINED MY LIFE (or, less dramatically, that they'd altered the lense through which I see my life and my expectations for it)
Have you experienced anything similar after a long hike or a thru-hike?

I'm just mucking about testing out this short feature haha... and not even sure I've put it in the 'Shorts' section. Am I old and technologically-stunted now? Maybe. Are you a mile-crusher or a trail dawdler? I think I'm somewhere in between. Either way, I think we can all relate to eating meals like this some days on Trail 😂

So here's a very late comment on this video, but whatever. I watched your start of the SWCP and was very sorry that you had to give up and no blame to yourself can be attached. However, don't slag the UK off then wonder why there isn't a long distance hiking culture here. 1) we are an extremely overcrowded country (and nobody in power seems to be able to understand how much worse it is going to get). 2) Farmers and landowners in the UK supply a large percentage of the amount of food needed, more than most people appreciate. And unlike America, do so without the excesses the US allows in the way of chemicals, GM and intensive factory farming. They might have a great hiking culture but the food is poisoning people. 3) As somebody who lives in a rural area and sees so many examples everyday of how entitled, antisocial and ungrateful visitors are, allowing wild camping is an absolute recipe for disaster. If people from cities/towns cannot even use the rubbish bins provided on beaches, what chance has "leave no trace" got? We have a large population of urban dwellers who think the supermarkets actually provide the food, totally divorced from the reality of rural farming. Your comments about "rich, greedy landowners" encourage that idea. A seemingly empty field is not there to provide a nice wild camping spot, it's there to rest the land so that stock grazing or planting can take place at a later date. And don't even get me started about dogs...

Great video! Thank you! I have an Arc Haul and I cannot reach the water bottle pocket for the life of me! I always have someone else to grab my water for me. I think I have figured out a solution, though. We’ll see, on my next trip, if it works. I would like to have a port for a water bladder tube. To use a bladder with that pack, you have to set the bladder on top of the pack contents and run the tube out where you roll the bag down. It is clumsy, at best, so I don’t consider that a viable option.

I guess one take on this is that you don’t really have children. You have children for 18 years but the whole rest of your life you have adult family and that’s where the real value is. My parents didn’t really enjoy having children, but I can see that they love having me and my sister in their lives now.

Can really relate to this. Spent my life working hard to have a good retirement and yes, it was worth it. I can now be free as much as I want and it’s wonderful. The problem is that when I travelled before 2015, there weren’t hundreds of other people doing it. Why do I want to do the caminos when it’s like a traffic jam now? Too many people in the world now I’m afraid. You have to hike further and further away to get away.

Sorry to hear you felt you had to quit the SWCP. It is so beautiful. I myself am lucky to be able to walk with a childhood friend. We know each other well and we have the same goals and walking style, and we are quite similarly fit so pace is not an issue either. And we can walk without talking for a long time 😊 We do meet lovely people on the path now and then and have some really nice chats. I think there were less people about in 2021, as there still were travel restrictions. Perhaps you will give it a new go later in life, or do it in stages (as we are doing). It is absolutely stunning 🥰 Anyway, we all have different approaches in life and it is good that you know your limits and what you appreciate and do your choices according to that. Best of luck on your trails 😊👍🏻

I just stumbled upon this video searching for videos from the SWCP. I myself am walking this path in yearly sections with a friend. We travel from Norway and do this as a yearly part of our summer vacations. I am impressed that you are taking on this long trail alone, and that you are so positive even if you got so sick. I agree that this path is amazing. We wanted to do the Cornwall bit first, and have so far walked from Westward Ho! to Falmouth. Starting in Falmouth again this summer. But we are not camping. We are in our late 60's and treat ourselves to B&Bs and luggage transfer and carry only a daypack each with valuables, water, food, cameras, powerbanks, map and extra clothes (heavy enough for us😂). It has been marvellous so far. I guess you are home now and perhaps you have started on a new adventure. I have subscribed and will watch all your videos from the SWCP and more. All the best 😊

I agree tents need more tie outs on vestibules. Nemo is better than BA CS its competition here in the USA. I bet it is neat over there across the pond there. Hope to go trekking out there some day: what area should I go? They call it "wild camping" out there eh?

Pause: yeah the bikepack model does not buckle at the feet or pole ends: it has those grommets that stick on the bottom of the pole & it only tensions at one side. Nemo said for 2023 it is changing them.

did my first solo backpacking hike along the WHW this year having just turned 47. Great experience and highly recommend it. As with anything though keep safe and have your phone charged for emergencies. Was a stretch after leaving Inversnaid that was poorly sign posted. Thought I had gone the wrong way somehow as looked like I was looping back around the loch. Phoned daughter to get her advice and then stopped a couple guys who assured me I was going the right way but agreed it was poorly sign posted along that particular stretch. So yeah, there are solo female hikers along the way but it is a fairly busy trail so never really alone. My favourite stretch was the Devils Staircase but that climb down into Kinlochleven along the loose stone road is a bit of a nightmare. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a trail that is worth redoing several times. Always a different experience each time doing it. Next year doing it again but with daughter and the dog.

I know this video is a year old, but it's new to me :). I'm not sure if you noticed (and maybe it's not on your model since it's an older one), but the chest strap on both of your bags is adjustable. On the Z Packs, the black clips where the strap attaches to your shoulder straps can be slid up or down, so you can slide it up to give your chest a bit more space and make it more comfortable. They both also have "load lifters" at the top of the shoulder straps so that the weight will be carried differently on your shoulders. Once you learn how to adjust them on the ZPacks bag, that should make a huge difference and stop the rubbing. Hope this helps!

Great detailed video thanks. With it's relatively large profile prone to wind (and vibration) that you described, does the small ridge pole cause excessive wear where it meets the flysheet? I'm looking at a couple of tents with this design but wonder about the durability of the small ridge pole design etc.

Great video. I'm doing the coast of Britain (slowly: I've done Scarborough to Barnstaple so far). SWCP might be better than the Appalachian Trail as I've heard that the Appalachian Trail is a green tunnel for 2000 miles. SWCP has lots of variety and open views and lots of historical places en route. I met someone who did the Pacific Crest Trail and he said it was excellent (took him 6 months or so).

Is it fair of me to say the following? If you don't feel you want children you probably shouldn't have them, and in the end your whole video is about you not feeling you want children. If you felt you wanted them, your objections about it all would be far less prominent, if you had them at all.
