The Best Cinema / Video Lens for Sony Cameras - The 16-35mm T/3.1 Cinema Servo Zoom Lens.
In todays' episode of PhotoKitchen we try to solve a mystery. How can the 16-35 T/3.1 lens be the best lens for Sony shooters, yet no one is really talking about it, and they really should.
Not only has Sony built an amazing quality cinema lens, but it is one of the few, if not only, true cinema zoom lenses with auto focus and a servo zoom motor built in. They have also managed to keep it as one of best secrets in the video cinema world.

Decent review, aren't these app so frustrating sometimes 😂
Thank you for watching. I think CP1 is the more frustrating for me, because they just won't make simple UI changes to improve the experience. The lack of true, or inconsistent "Auto Sync" for Metadata and Development settings costs me so much time, but not as much as the lack of quality export on LRC's side of things.
@@PhotoKitchen425 I know what you mean, I left using C1 as it slow enough but it was frustrating using it and once LR improved a couple of years ago with the masking I switched. Found masking on each image more accurate with C1 and you refine better but overall very slow to use. Agree C1 seemed obstinately stubborn in their refusal to changes, probably don't have the R&D budget available to Adobe.
Hi I jjust tried this on my a6700 at night in my room. I pointed my camera at my lit desk setup and it stayed at 250 SS and then I pointed it at a dark part of the room and it went below 250 SS. Did I do something wrong? Thanks for the video!!!
It would probably drop if there is not enough light, to be sure. This is just making sure it doesn't drop bellow if there is enough ISO range, and ISO is in AUTO. If you have maxed out ISO, it will then drop.
@@PhotoKitchen425 Oooohh ok that makes sense then ok thanks so much! Also would you recommend using aperture priority while using a 3.5-5.6 lens? I have the 18-135 and have been using aperture priority since it's a non-constant max aperture lens.
That is a good question @@antsalmon, but a tough one. I guess the good side of shooting in Aperture priority on that lens is at least you know you are getting either a fixed aperture, above 5.6, or the lowest possible number based on your zoom.
Really great tutorial. Thanks!
You are very welcome!
Thank you for the video! Quick question, when shooting tethered wirelessly with my Nikon Z6 III, I can’t preview the photos on the camera anymore. Only on the ipad or laptop. Anyway you fix that? Appreciate your help on that
So you are in two areas I don't do much work in, wireless tethering and Nikon cameras. My first idea/question is, can you preview if you are tethered with a cable, but not wireless? I know in the past Nikon has been tricky when it comes to tethered shooting, so I don't know if this is CP1 issue, or a Nikon feature. I also haven't upgraded to the newest version of CP1, but I know they have "better" tethering support, so you might want to check that out. Also, if you have Adobe Lightroom Classic, you might want to try a quick tethered test there and see if it works.
@@PhotoKitchen425 it actually works fine with NX Tether, I can see the preview on my cam. But on Capture One I cant. Everything else works fine, I can see a live view and play with all the settings from my cam and even ahoot. But no preview on cam
I would reach out to CP1@@bashirbouraffoul , I hate to be that person, but I am not sure about Nikon and wireless.
Hey there How do I go back to a previews folder to add more images ? It only let’s me add new folders.😅
Not sure what you mean. When you shoot, or import, you can see the images, in the folder structured they were imported in LRC as in the Library Module, Left Column, Folders Panel. Your last import or tethered shooter should be listed under the Catalog Panel, same area, under Previous Import.
thanks for replying. Let’s say on day 1 I created a folder (team 1). I also created some more folders (more teams) On day 2 I want to add more pictures to my original team 1 folder. Is that possible?
Yes @@LuisMurciaLMXDIGITAL , when you do the tethered setup window, choose that Team one folder again. It might be already selected from the previous tethered shoot.
Good info. One comment though. At one point you say that Adobe calls its 'folders', 'bins', and you say that they are really the same thing. But perhaps the main point made in the entire presentation is that bins are not, NOT, folders, and in fact, they are quite different in a number of ways, because they are virtual folders, not actual folders and thus not equal, not the same.
Thank you for watching.
as I moved my whole library (70k pictures) capture one have forgot all the masks on adjustment layer. So every bit of cloning and healing has to be done ones again... horror. do somebody have any idea how to rectify the problem?
So are you using a catalog or a session for CP1? And when you moved the images, did you also move that file, because that is where you mask information is stored.
To be honest, I’ve never had a desire to be a cinematographer, but your video truly opened my eyes to the beauty and artistry of cinema lenses. The way you broke it all down was captivating, and now I see why they play such a crucial role in storytelling. Thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge!
Thank you so much for watching!
Capture One's problem is its name, it sounds like a studio based photography application, not a powerful at home / studio based image editing software. I have just moved to Capture One due to Adobe's incessant use of rental economy! Bit of getting used to but it looks good!
Thank you for watching. I have a few more videos on CP1 that might help you out as you move away from Adobe.
Great comparison
Thank you, and thank you for watching!
Great video. Love how quick you explain things. Get right down to the nitty gritty. No unnecessary talking and explained in a super easy matter of fact way. Thanks!!
Thank you, and thank you for watching.
Bahaha. Molè... thats good stuff right there.

Very cool!
Thank you so much
Great summary! Will be great to hear what you think about the new C1 Beta and see if it over comes any of the gaps mentioned here (especially with the masking)
I have been watching what CP1 has been putting out, but I generally stay away from Beta programs because I want to see what the public gets, and how it really works with out the old, "well it is still just a beta" reply.
Cool! This is a public beta, so features will be available at the end of the month. It looks like some of these gaps have been closed, so it will be interesting to get your take.
My Nikon d700 stop connecting to the tethering. Just out of the blue. Any idea what it could be?
Have you updated CP1 or your OS? Check the cable, or try a new one. Do you have memory cards in the camera, and haven't before? If so, pull the cards. But an out of the blue issue like this is usually either a software update glitch, or a bad cable.
Thank you so much. This was fantastic
Thank you for watching. I hope you check out other videos on the channel!
Nice dog. Why not a silver one?
I just didn't have one on hand. But the silver one would give you a bit more power to be sure, and increase contrast. In working with other photographers, I have seen them all lean to the white rather than silver because it doesn't create as much highlights/hot spots on the face. Thank you for watching!
@@PhotoKitchen425 I think for beauty shors better to have silver, cause model use a lots of cosmetic products to make skin precise, it give you more flexibility, if you need soft, you just adding the sox on beauty dish and get like small octobox with wider angles of spiting light.

Thanks for keeping this review honest.
Thank you for watching. I try my best. It is funny how many people think I hate either program, and I really don't, I just want to point out the things I think need fixing.
Yh my camera is recognized by the program, but when I take a pic it doesn't show up in the program, or anywhere
If you just import some photos to the program, do you see them in CP1?
very useful, very grateful. have a great day :)
Thank you for watching!!!!
Thanks for this.

Not sure what software you’re using but I love how when you talk about a tool/bar, it zooms in on the tool so I’m not pausing to try and see clearly and keep up like with most tutorial videos. Great, clear video - learned several things I didn’t know 🙌🏼
Thank you for watching! I am using ScreenFlow for Mac, it gives you so many tools for screen recording, including zoom into certain parts of the screen or a window.
Selective logic on the LR tethering and export dings. Those have been around for many moons. I’m also baffled by the lack of professional tethering support but the AI features are the way of the future and Adobe continues to enhance and roll out features that amaze me. I also love C1 for its color qualities which are wow. They are both great tools that continue to have room to grow.
Thank you for watching.
Happy to see C1 updated the thing with the subject/background selection when you copy-paste settings from other photo.
Thank you for watching.
Great video! As someone just starting with Lightroom, I found your explanations super clear and easy to follow. The step-by-step breakdown really helped me understand how to organize and edit my photos better. Looking forward to experimenting with more of these tools. Thanks for making Lightroom feel less intimidating for beginners like me!
Thank you so much for watching!
thanks for the vid
Thank you for watching!
Really helpfull video! I’ll try this right away in Capture One. Though, I think you used the lightroom color grading method too heavily. ( 1:09 ) Usually what I do is not cranking the saturation slider to the max (like 3-20 sat) - and then un blending the color (while alt+clicking the blending slider) so it doesn’t applies the colors in the shadows to the highlights and vice-versa. - And then balancing the colors to either the shadows or highlights (also while alt+clicking the balance slider). - Luminance slider makes you choose where your shadows/highlights starts. It also lets you tweak the mid tones to re adjust your histogram. *(alt+clicking sliders makes you see the color (like luma range in Capture One) and gives you the ability to pin point either the shadows/mid tones/highlights to tweak them to your desires.) Thanks for the video! And I hope my comment will help someone!
Thank you for watching!
I really really enjoyed your fair, non biased assessment of both programs. I’ve been a bridge user and thinking trying Lightroom and this was helpful. I’m curious. You said you use both? How do you use both?
I use Bridge when I am working in non-photo Adobe programs, so video and page editing. I also use Bridge for quickly looking at client or student files, images that I wouldn't import into a Catalog, because they are not my images. Thank you for watching.
You can select multiple in Lightroom Develop Module for Autosync. You don't have to go to the Library Module to select - but selections carry over irrespective which Module selected in. Activate the thumbnail loupe along the bottom as default (you can hide it with the little arrow centered on bottom - just like tool bar with the top arrow). I usually select all then apply the camera lens correction profiles, apply camera calibration and white balance. Likewise, within the Develop Module I can select 2 or more then open in Photoshop with Lightroom adjustments as separate layers, something I don't think Capture One can do as it appears limited to working with one, not multiple images in layers. Finally, on export, I choose the ones I want to export in Develop then switch to Library for export. There is a major issue with export though "forgetting" hard drive destination setting after exporting a calibration profile and having to set the hard drive destination from scratch. That is what has me looking back at Capture One.
Thank you for watching.
Talking about people that don’t know MOLLE while mispronouncing it is crazy work! 😅 Great video, though.

The Grip Head comparison is really clutch and the specific kind of comparison that matters when comparing something so similar. Thanks!
It is really night and day to be sure. Thank you for watching.
I’ve been trying to get this very setting to work on my R4 but mine will still drop bellow the minimum shutter speed that I select… iso is set at 100-6400.
You might not have the aperture or ISO high enough to make this work. Try expanding your Auto ISO settings past 6400.
This video from Photo Kitchen was absolutely outstanding! It was packed with rich, detailed information, providing a step-by-step guide that was both thorough and easy to follow. The explanations behind each technique were clear, leaving no stone unturned, and the visual examples perfectly demonstrated how to achieve stunning results in photography lighting. It’s rare to find a video that balances depth with accessibility so well, making it incredibly valuable for both beginners and seasoned photographers. This is hands down one of the best resources available for mastering photography! Very GEL-lous of your gel collection.
Thank you for watching!
good stuff man!
Thank you for watching!
That Pelican case has wheels and a MOLLE panel. Missed opportunity to name your video ROLLING ON MOLLE.
In Sony a6100 where is it sir? To set limit to shutter speed?
I think this is feature found in later cameras, and the a6100 probably does not have it. Check you ISO menu, that is where it should be.
@@PhotoKitchen425 yes I didn’t find So sad! I have to stick to manual mode now!
Sorry to hear, but I do think this on cameras that have been made in the past 5 years@@chefinthehouse2294

thanks for the video, after more than 15 years using only the M mode, i think it's time to let him go 😅
I still use Manuel mode all the time, but when my light source is constantly changing, and I don't have time to keep dialing the exposure triangle up and down, it is nice to know there are some good resources to fall back on. Thank you for watching!
Matthews is the Gold Standard in grip gear - been using them since when I was on-set in the 90s. They are definitively more expensive than the rest but I've never been disappointed using their gear. But I gotta say that the Kupo gear raises my eyebrow because what I've used has been great and not as pricey.
I agree with 100%, and Kupo is providing some amazing value to be sure.
Great video and thoughts. A suggestion is to provide links for viewers to purchase your gear. Nothing wrong with making some money along the way.
I indeed need to work on that for sure. Thank you for watching!
This is a great video! Anyway, it looks like the the main thing that's really better on the Matthews is the very grippy Grip Head, and not the C-stand itself. Is this right? Am I missing something?
No, you are not missing a thing, I think the grip head/grip arm are much better on the Matthews, but the stands themselves are equal quality for sure.
I found the Chimera super cheap used years ago. The quality is light years ahead of the cheaper brands. I'd be shocked if it didn't last another 20 years.
The quality of Chimera's products is amazing, and I agree with you about it lasting another 20 years. There are brands you know that if here taken care of at a minimal level, are fantastic buys in the used market. Chimera is at the top of the list.
@@PhotoKitchen425 +100% and people sell Chimera stuff so cheap used. Love their stuff.
So 28mm is not a good comparison with the 35mm? Is 28mm better compared with the 24mm?
I think the 28mm is an interesting focal length. While I haven't used it before, I know many that love it, because they find the 24mm too wide. I do agree with them, because I have owned a 24 and sold it because it was too wide of the type of work I did, but not wide enough for interior spaces or landscapes. I own the 20mm and really love it, but it is a radical difference between it and the 35mm. Thank you for watching.
