Brilliant video but not sure why anyone would wonder ( 2:22 ) about using Navionics on a Raymarine as Raymarine consoles are offered with Navionics, in fact the Humming bird back in the day was the unit that brought Navionics to the fore for a lot of people, in the fishing industry ( at least here in my part of Cornwall ) we wouldn’t be without Navionics 👍🤝
Also I’m able to use my Navionics on up to three different systems so I don’t know if we have a different subscription or something? 🤔🤷♂️
Those mussels looked fabulous!
Thank you Dave. Great video. Jusy catching up with your channel. Just like you I'm becoming increasingly obsessed with sail trim. Many thanks - Chris
Sounds like you had a great few days in Ireland. Poor Robin, that looked quite rough seas! The sailing back was great since the sea was flat. That's more my cuppa tea.😅 Nice to see a large sail though when you hoped for more wind! Thanks for a great video.😊
Great video. I met Gary a few months ago at the Liverpool Arms in Conwy when we were on holiday. He seemed a really nice guy. I thought one of his mates was you lol😂😂😂
I remember you Steve
Well done chaps!
I hope the first third of this video was not the night before you set sail otherwise this is one of the most irresponsible sailing videos I have witnessed. My simple question is, " Would you have passed a breathalyser test before you set sail?" If not why did leave. Having been involved in the search for, and the recovery of bodies of irresponsible sailors, I don't think this video is a good example of competent skipper and crew on board a yacht.😡
As Dave said on the video, that was their first night in port and they spent two days in Ireland before heading back, so no, your presumption was wrong...
You obviously do not have the ability to read or interpret the first few words of my post or maybe a trip to Specsavers might help you.
As pointed out we did not leave the morning after our night out, we are not that irresponsible. We stayed for 2 nights.
If your Aunty had balls she'd be your uncle.
awesome video
Guinness needs to be let settle until below the head is pure black. Be patient, do not drink bubbles.
Dave, thank you, I have been dying to eat mussels ever since I watched your video. I ate mine with an arabiata sauce, next time curry.
Another enjoyable video....thank you! Nearly two years ago I purchased a Sailrite sewing machine. Although I had no sewing experience whatsoever, I've since learned the basics and have produced several canvas pieces, easily paying for the initial cost of the machine. Recognizing that my skills are extremely limited, I focus on simple pieces or make repairs on the existing binimi or spray hood. I know my limitations. Oh, one piece that I made were chaps for my new Highfield dinghy. Those were a challenge but turned out great. One other thing.....I've attached a link to one of my videos where I was crewing for a friend in a race (my job was mainsail trimmer). The lady in the green windbreaker had never sailed before; this was her first. I found out later that she was the new girlfriend of one of the other crew. I don't know if their relationship grew stronger or died after this race. th-cam.com/video/kE5UPsoiIyU/w-d-xo.html
Another enjoyable and informative video. Thank you. I don't mind taking new-to-sailing folks out for an afternoon sail but I draw the line on small children. Through the years I've learned that having small children on board causes it to be stressful and not enjoyable for the parents as they're constantly looking after the wandering little ones. So I have a rule that no child under twelve is allowed on board. It's caused a few uncomfortable situations but in the end it's a personal policy that people respect. Another pet pieve while sailing is line house keeping. Whether I'm sailing solo or have crew on board, I will make an example by gathering loose jibsheets and mainsheets from under foot, making sure the deck is clear and ready for the next tack.
Whats the boat type, very nice.
Was that the 2 foxes pub? Formerly O’Neills . Do they do food again? They closed kitchen during Covid
Happy new year. Miss sailing Dublin bay. Wave dancer is in Arzal,France. Plan to get to Almerimar Spain by end of next season then upgrade engine over winter then transatlantic
Hello from Mobile, Alabama, USA. After discovering your sailing channel a few months ago, I have enjoyed each and every one. Thanks for sharing. My Beneteau 42s7, SHUTTER SPEED, is docked in Pascagoula, Mississippi, a small coastal city about forty miles from my house. Although I'm retired (from a major US shipbuilder specializing in US Navy surface combatants), I consult for a UK foundry pouring specialized castings for several US shipbuilders. Here's a link to my TH-cam channel......th-cam.com/video/AdEZxCtVcIE/w-d-xo.html
I'd love to join in so if you ever need crew with little experience , I'm your man
❤❤❤that is a beautiful boat.
Great video was funny seeing my empty mooring behind lottie, she’s on the hard, I’m down there today trying to finish the antifouling, horrible job 😭
Thanks for watching. Yep antifouling is a hobble job. Did it earlier this year. Bet you’re looking forward to getting back in the water?
Some great sailing. I love the flatness though you then have to use the engine😂. I get sea sick😊. Good to hear from Rob! I hope all goes well on his sea escape. Thanks. New Years Eve is tomorrow so from New Zealand wishing you a fantastic New Year 2025🎉🍻🥳
Thank you. Have a great new year 👍
When you get to Ireland on a sailling bout, do you have to go thru passport control or customs ?
Ireland and UK have a Common Travel Area. UK citizens can travel freely , no passport required. Just need to announce arrival to customs who probably won’t care very much.
For UK citizens there is no need to check-in. But I do always have my passport on me just in case.
What's with all that annoying creaking?? Will drive me nuts!
Not sure if I got it on camera but on the return leg we spent sometime trying to work out what it was. Turned out to be the outhaul on the main. Slackened it off a little and the noise stopped.
Thanks for sharing. Love to see the so410 under sail and in practical use! Cheeres
Well done lads! Great trip.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching. 👍
Not wanting to be a back seat sailor, but re furling the genoa w a powered winch - obviously each to their own, but I've always always always been taught you should furl by hand, not even by a manual winch; the loads shouldn't be that great (my parents have the same boat but from 2001), and if they are, something is probably wrong.... a couple of years ago, my uncle lost his forestay as he effectively unwound it as it caught at the top, and using the winch he couldn't feel it was tougher. For the extra 2 mins of effort, I'd say its worth doing it by hand. Anyways, good video as always, good to see Robin is doing well!!
Great guy but anybody asking for money is asking for contributions to help fund there way of life and if it isn't don't ask for patreon or buy me a beer/ coffee links, I want to do sailing but I'm waiting till I have the money to do it, sorry but my opinion
The West Highland rail line is one of the most beautyfull in Scotland. If you have the chance, ride along the other branch and stay the night-club in Corrour.
I love the dogcam!
I smiled when you bought one pump after another. I do that all the time. Order things that sounds smart and cheap on the internet. When they arrive they are useless but it is too much hassle to send them back. Always end up buying the pro gear in the end. One of these days I’ll start in that end and skip all the disapointing steps. I sail a Bav 39 Cruiser and I love my boat!
If its an anchor alarm you want, just use Anchor watch on your phone, actually 2 phones to ensure you don’t experience an issue with 1 phone and no alarm, you can set all types of parameters. Using any electronics alarms means the system must run consuming a lot of power to run all this electronics all night long. All need is anchor alarm when at anchor to sleep peacefully.
Those mussels. Lovely. In Holland we have a different recepy. We cook them 10 minutes in a dry white wine with a mixture of carrot, union, leek and celery. After 5 minutes give them a good stir. We use a "mosselpan". You can google that. And we have different sauces to dip them in and with bread or toast. And very important.....you did not mention (or I missed it) that a mussel that did not open after cooking should not been eaten. Not opening means it was dead.
thanks that's really interesting, I d always wondered why they alarms were so darn quiet, particularly in the noise of the waves and wind, when sleeping through that I really needed a louder alarm and always used the phone with an anchor dragging app, but also need a louder alarm for the other alerts. good work, thanks, Its really easy to install that backbone, I like the system and id be confident to install the whole system with ray marine, they're pretty foolproof , I think the axiom is a terrific thing, reliable too and was good in Australian conditions , tough, heat and cold and wet and dry, a choice of alarm tones would be another good idea ray marine.
Buzzer is 200€ 😳 I use a little blue tooth speaker. My Axiom has BT. It cost me €10
Brilliant. Thank you. You explain that the alarm is wired to indicate a dragging anchor. But can the device be fitted to cover several alarm conditions simultaneously leaving the crew to investigated what alarm condition has been activated?
Yes you can set it for all alarms not just anchor.
Has your engine got anodes? If so how often should they be changed.
Not on the engine, but one on the hull and one on the sterndrive. I change them every year.
That bridge with a yellow connection is special for old Sea Talk things, not Power. For example RM ”old” remote Control for autopilot (still using old Sea Talk) or older instrument. Good buzzer. I want one too 🙂. And you woke me up from been stuck with GoPro.
Thanks for the info. 👍
...that would drive me insane...luckily Im a very light sleeper
Engine service - you should also change the rubber impeller in the water pump.
Thanks for your reply. I did do the impeller, just forgot to mention it. 👍
That bloke at the end is/ hopefully was ,an emp!phew of the marina ,and as such his duties are to care for thecustomers,of the marina. That was not a good show, unlike your vignette showing your sail.Your boat looks lovely all that " shiny " Brown labelling and graceful lines!I am on a Nauticat on "F" let and before you ask , "No" it is not a derelict !!!(lol)
Can you switch between the two? And, can you control the volume?
No unfortunately you can’t switch between the two and there is no volume control.
Thanks mate! Audio is a bit low on the fuel polishing segment.
Sorry about that, I’ve just purchased a new microphone so this will improve in future episodes. 🎤
@@sailingmadness No need to apologize at all mate. Really appreciate the videos. Good to hear about the mic upgrade too.
Thanks for the video, could you post the details of the fuel pump that does 340lph please :)
I purchased it a few years ago on eBay. Unfortunately I can’t see the make/model without dismantling the system. If you are building one yourself just make sure it’s a diesel transfer pump. The filter is a Racor 900 from ASAP Supplies. Hope that helps? 👍
Also known as a lift pump. Make sure to spec the pump for your voltage. Advertised flow on pump might be 14.4v or 12v. Big difference. Also with pre or post filters will affect delivered flow. Get a big enough pump and a gauge to verify
I have never understood why the Alarms on a Raymarine, which is what I use, seem so low priority. For any offshore sailor, these are critical. So simple to add better alarms at every plotter, etc. Simply put in a better speaker. Also have some options to adjusts tones, or settings.
I’m ordering one right away
Same issue with my B&G set up. In fact if you are sailing at speed or it's windy you cant hear the alarm at all so I fitted a 99db Piezzo buzzer from Farnell for about £10. Actually I have two, one for the Echomax RTE and one for the B&G NW with different sounds www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwiBuaHN_quKAxVEiVAGHWVvAc0YABAbGgJkZw&ae=2&aspm=1&co=1&ase=2&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvP-6BhDyARIsAJ3uv7a4VocyG5n_l_p1cE2Er2SI3zDTMew7ujNLyRvcI4eNjbgvnmtZqroaAtkoEALw_wcB&sig=AOD64_205r0k77eCYxuDyYWyjnmfBRznLA&ctype=5&q=&nis=4&ved=2ahUKEwjC05zN_quKAxULV0EAHQbnNmUQ9aACKAB6BAgKECM&adurl=
We are almost full-time liveaboards that very rarely use marinas so a life at anchor. We never set an anchor alarm. Just decent anchor and chain. It's not a show off thing, we just hafe never seen the need. We don't drag. We power set the anchor using full engine power. If 86hp sets it, it won't move
I too trust my anchor and my ability to set it right, but for me it’s all about that extra security and piece of mind. It’s very naive to say your anchor won’t drag, because one day it will! Trust me, it has happened to me and when that day comes you could end up regretting not setting an anchor alarm.
@sailingmadness maybe, but with thousands of nights at anchor in the last 10 years as full time liveaboard, and having excellent ground tackle, that risk it tiny. I sleep well
Thats the type of clients we see in claims (yes, we offer insurance,) and have heard this many times... it never happened before... until it did)
@waltervanderboor what did cruisers do before electronic anchor alarms? We sail a 44ft ketch. The mizzen mast has 6mm rigging that starts to howl when the wind gets up. It's like a warning system. If we get a big squall that sets the rigging singing, then I will get up and have a look around. We have had near misses only from other boats dragging past us. If you are tucked up in bed, with your anchor alarm on, you won't be getting up to have a look around, so you are the one likely to get hit by a dragging boat. We do what we have always done and it works. If the weather is bad, we sit an anchor watch for the same reason. We don't rely on electronics to wake us. It only solves half the problem
@ as a live aboard for 15 years we set alarm and keep watch. The wind may sing your rigging but there’s other things like current and unexpected large waves or larger tide that can silently move an anchor. What people did before electronics ? Keep watch. It’s that simple. But given most cruisers do not…set an alarm.
That is all very well but what happens when poor Robin is asleep below, whilst you are on watch and that bloody thing goes off every time you acquire a new AIS target or radar target???!!!
Fair comment, although you do have the option to turn AIS and radar alarms off, so depending on weather/visibility conditions on longer passages when you’re doing split watches crew can rest without being disturbed.
When you said buzzer I was expecting a buzzer not a beeper, thought my CO2 alarms were going off, the identical tone, higher than my smoke alarms. Must remember 'Test it Tuesday' next week, forgot last week.
Hi Tony. Yes thinking about it, it’s the same tone as the one in my house too. 🤣
I get the need to be able to hear an alarm but I think that's going to drive you nuts. 🤬
You might be right, time will tell. 🤣. I can always unplug it for everyday use and just plug it back in when anchoring. 👍
the yellow is the seatalk to seatalkng converter, its what making your old generation displays functional. There will be a red cable somewhere that is power
Thank you. Yes you are correct. I found that out shortly after recording this episode. 👍
