I started this channel as a way to share my adventures in hiking and backpacking from a Christian perspective. Whether I’m spending a whole week on the trail or just an afternoon, my time out there is short. In the same way, so is my time on this side of eternity. My citizenship is in Heaven and I'm just passing through. With each trip into the backcountry, I’m reminded of this truth. I'm a sojourner...

End of an Era: Saying Goodbye to Seagrass to Sassafras
It may come as a surprise, but this is something I've wanted to do for a while. I guess one of the reasons it took me so long is I was waiting until the right opportunity came along. It's like they say though "If you wait for perfect timing, you'll be waiting forever." So, here it goes!

Backpacking with a 10 Week Old Baby!
มุมมอง 24314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Taking an overnight trip was a spur of the moment decision. We had a free weekend, beautiful weather, and a baby that was finally sleeping (mostly) through the night. What better time to introduce our daughter to backpacking than now? So, we loaded up our packs and hit the trail. Backpacking with a 10 week old wasn't easy, but it was certainly worth it! Check out the trail journal where I share...
Raising the Next Generation Outside

It’s true. Bringing a little one on the trail introduces all kinds of new challenges, but I haven’t let that stop me. Learning to overcome those challenges has been so rewarding! It makes me so sad hearing parents say they used to love hiking, but gave up on it once the kids came along. You definitely don’t have to venture off into untamed wilderness to get your family outside. There are plenty...

This 20 mile section hike isn't easy. The steep climbs are a grind, and there's not much to see about a mile and a half in. After a while, it starts to feel like you're walking beside a repetitive forest background ripped right from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon. And at the same time, it offers a small taste of the highs and lows that make the even greater 2,200 mile journey to Maine worthwhile. This...

Answering Your Hiking and Backpacking Questions | 2023 Q&A
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
How do you prevent ticks & fleas from getting onto the dog. I've lost a dog to tick fever in spite of all medication and vaccination given by the vet. Please advise, ATB, The _Solo_Hiker....
I'm so sorry to hear that! We predominantly rely on Nexguard. That's worked really well for our dogs. I've also treated their gear with Permethrin and put neem oil spray (Ark Naturals) on their fur before trips. Hope this helps! 😊
@JessicaSojourning thank you so much for this information. I'll co-ordinate with my vet to ensure that they don't get any drug interaction between what you have said and what is already given. I truly hope I can take my dogs with me. They're at their happiest out there in nature. Warm wishes to you. May God bless you and your loved ones, ATB, The_Solo_Hiker....
Looking forward to the next chapter , Your video's are so well made you are a awesome story teller! I remember finding your channel when I was planning my first thru hike of the Foot Hills Trail th-cam.com/video/rB29u5IKGU4/w-d-xo.html And I was Hooked . I wish you and your Family the best, Happy New Year! And keep it up!
Happy New Year to you too! Thank you for all your kind and encouraging words. Your support means a lot. Truly! 😊
I love this, Jessica! I didn’t even know about the photography, that’s such a neat part of your story. Excited to continue following along, and hopefully we’ll be able to go backpacking together again sometime!
I'm glad to hear it! 😊 I don't think I can put into words how much your friendship and support means. Yes! I'd love to get together sometime this Spring 🏕
Do I have to camp at the camp sites or can I camp anywhere
Great question! In Pisgah National Forest the rules around dispersed camping are fairly straight forward. Your site must be ¼ mile away from trailheads, 100 ft from the trail itself, 200 ft from a water source, and ¼ mile away from any developed rec. sites. To reduce impact on the area, camping in already established sites is best. There's definitely no shortage of them along the Art Loeb and other trails connected to it. Happy Trails!
I've always loved your videos! I think your videography, storytelling and editing are so artfully done. And I really found your last two videos about still being able to get out to enjoy nature with an infant to be very inspiring and something that is not talked about very often. So many women think they have to give up their passions when they become moms. Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into your channel and for sharing!
Your encouragement means so much! Thank you. I'm glad to hear my videos resonate with you. There was a family hiking channel, I loved with so much helpful info on taking kids outdoors. In one of the videos the mom said something to the nature of "Backpacking when they're babies isn't easy, but by continuing to do it you're setting a precedent for your family going forward." That really stuck with me. I can't for the life of me find them anymore! Really hoping they didn't delete the channel.
Change can be a good thing. Glad you’re doing well, and that baby is growing 😊
I think it will be! She's almost a toddler now. That's an "adventure" I'm so not ready for 😂
@ you’re as great a mom as you are a story teller! You got this 😊
@jamicrawford6729 Aww! I appreciate that. I'm giving it all I got over here 😅
Looking forward to what comes next!
Great storytelling as always! I notice the name hasn’t been officially changed yet so it’s not too late to pivot to “Lane’s World” 😂
Hmm...Very tempting. I'll consider it 🤣
Damn those shots and storytelling ,so beautiful 🤍 I'm sure i am gonna see Millions of subs on this channel.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the encouragement. Maybe someday 🤞😁
Being on the other end of raising a child who we took on many outside adventures, I agree with you 1000% 🌟
Great name. Love your channel!
I'm so glad to hear it! 😊 Thank you for watching
Sounds good! I really enjoy your authenticity. Wishing you all the best going forward!
Thank you, that means a lot! 😊
Whew! You had me concerned for a moment. Love the new name for your channel.
Haha! Sorry for the false alarm 😅 I'm so glad to hear it!
Great to see you guys doing well! Beautiful family! Merry Christmas!!!
Thank you 😊 Merry Christmas to you too!
Love this so much! We raised our 4 outside just like this, it was awesome!
That's so encouraging to hear! Way to go 🙌
Your baby is adorable.. Congratulations.
Thank you so much! And she knows it too 🙄😆
Great videography there! Cool story. Love hearing about history and maybe a bit of folklore. 😊
This is my second time watching this video and it contains a lot of great information. I have since stopped using a pack with my 50 pound hound mix Maggie. She just was not loving it and I already ask a lot out of her. We did the Long Trail in Vermont the last two years, it’s a little over 270 miles and takes about 20-23 days. We are headed to Colorado in late August to hike the Colorado Trail. I think it’s about 480 miles. My dog needs a real sleep system and I finally stopped jerking around and purchased her a 10 degree EE quilt. I should have done this three years ago. I wasted way too much money on lesser quality products, the one you listed from Ruff Wear for example. She is a short haired dog and gets cold fairly easily. From what I have learned from other and from a women named Bailey who has a channel called The Most Important Step. Paw care is very important. Bailey has hiked the entire CDT and many others with her two dogs, one a GS and own a smaller breed and she said paw issues ended their first attempt on the CT. I have met others on the AT getting off with their dogs for the same reason. She goes into great detail on this issue and I highly recommend her channel. I am going to try the boots, more than likely only using them I very rocky areas. I am also trying a product called Pad Tough. We will see how it goes. The Colorado Trail is rocky and very dry and that is what causes issues I am told. I have some months to work on paw protection. You do a great job with your content, thank you. I love hiking with my dog I do my best to take good care of her. If she has an issue we both have an issue. Take care
I agree! I've watched several of Bailey's videos. She is SO knowledgeable and experienced in the arena of thru-hiking with dogs. I hope the EE quilt works out for Maggie. My dogs are currently testing out Alpha Pak. The fit is identical to the packs they were using (from Aliexpress) which is a plus. The durability is a little lacking, BUT the customer service with issues I had was fantastic! Wishing you and your pup a safe fun journey on the Colorado trail 😊🙏
Is this food much lighter than traditional dog food. My dog Maggie and I plan on doing a thru hike of the Colorado Trail in 2025. She does not carry any of her gear or food so it gets heavy on my me. Looking to cut pack weight. Thanks and take care
YES! The Instinct freeze dried food is very lightweight. As long as it agrees with your pup's tummy, it would be a great option for a longer distance hike! The Honest Kitchen food I mention at the end is about as heavy as regular kibble, and the dogs weren't all that crazy about it.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Love this!!!!
I'm glad to hear it! Thanks for watching :)
Just getting caught up, great video! Still haven't been there...yet...😊 but looking forward to it.
Great to hear from you again! Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. One day you will, I'm sure of it.
Awewome story!! Thank you for sharing!! Ive been in the area only about 6 years now and I love hearing about the history of it. Look forward to another tale☺️
Glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out the "Tale of the Newlyweds" video this Saturday. I'm going to include links to 5 more stories from various trip videos in the description.
Aye!! Been a while since I seen a vid!! Hope all is well and I hope y’all are holdin up ok after those hurricanes!
Thanks for tuning in! All is well over here, thankfully. We had a lot of friends and family get hit pretty hard by the storms.
@@JessicaSojourning same! Glad yall are ok!!
Nobody has the right to approach any dog. And dogs should be kept on a leash. No need for a muzzle just keep control. A muzzled dog isn’t much protection.
Dogs are happiest when on the go. Thanks for the positive info.
Love it, great job on the video. This has been on my to visit list.
I was there October of 23. A definite test of will and perseverance. If you're a novice, might want to think twice about taking this on. Hope it didn't get destroyed from Helene.
I agree. It certainly is a challenge. I'm hoping the same thing. It'll probably be a long time before we know how bad the damage is 💔
This is a fantastic film! I love the way you edited it. Ive used uppbeat for some music tracks in some of my own films. Do you find a paid subscription with them worthwhile?
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think uppbeat premium is absolutely worth it. Having access to all the music in their catalog is great. So is the safelist feature. It's so frustrating when TH-cam slaps my video with a copyright claim despite the song having a CC0 or CC BY license AND providing attribution🤦♀️
@@JessicaSojourning Exactly! And disputing the claims is a real hassle. I was a little worried about them having enough music selections available, but I may go for it just because of the safe list. Thanks again!
@ErikHogan Of course! Hopefully you find it worthwhile too.
Your storytelling craft, editing, and videography have really matured. I enjoyed this!
I really appreciate that! Thank you for following along over the years 😊
got some good news I got a new member to the hiking crew A friend of mine his son in law was given a dog and his wife wasn't a fan didnt know the way shepherds act this poor dog was passed around 3 or 4 times and was confused and poorly treated. I told him I would take her and not to worry. She is a year and a half old solid black shepherd very sweet but has food issues she hasn't been fed well and has problems being fed around my other dogs I have had her for a week and she's coming around and she is starting to relax but doesn't want me out of her sight.I walk her after supper while the other dogs are finishing up their food so that keeps things smooth but she hasn't got the walk thing down yet I get drug along and for how thin she is she can pull. can't wait to get her on trail for a few miles.will update soon
Poor girl! I'm glad she's in good hands now. Given some more time and consistent routine, I know she'll be a great hiking companion. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
I feel sorry for you dogs. You embarrass them in front of their friends
A little embarrassment now and again is good for character building and keeping their egos in check 😉
Truly wonderful video of the beauty and tranquility of Panthertown!
I'm done having babies, but this was great information. Wiggles is darling! She's beautiful and seems like a very happy baby! I love seeing the exposure to nature at this young age. It's so important!!
Haha! I'm glad you still found it informative 😆 Thank you so much! She is a nature loving baby, for sure.
Thank you for the review! Loved every bit of it ❤
This has just been my entire German shepherd owning experience, on a daily basis. I think everyone who has a dog goes through this to some degree, some dogs much more than others (I've only owned large, reactive/behavioral rescue dogs sigh). It's also really annoying how people think every dog is gonna be their friend or how they think their dog should be friends with everyone 🙄🙄🙄 haha, I thought this video was gonna talk about responsibility like keeping your dog physically safe and making sure you know how to patch them up if they're injured or stuff like that. Not sure what exactly I was expecting. But this was equally nice
Thankfully I haven't had to patch up my doggos on any adventures! Lol. Tips for keeping them safe on the trail (especially in steep rocky areas) would be a great topic to cover in a future video 🤔
I'm just here to say I LOVE your videos. I found them looking for info on the Art Loeb trail and I'm hooked. Sadly, our 13yr. old mastiff/lab/who-knows-what mix passed away over the summer. My daughter (12) and I are the more avid hikers in our family and when the time is right we will absolutely find a good adventure-loving buddy to take with us. I'm watching now and loading up on tips so we'll be prepared when the time comes.Your videos are so refreshing, informative, and pleasant (cheesy but I don't know better word to explain it). Thank you for the work and effort - it's extremely useful for this decent hiker, but new backpacker.
You are too sweet! 😊 I'm so glad you found my videos so helpful. Are you thinking about tackling the Art Loeb this year? Or have you already done it? I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure you'll find the perfect pup to hike with when y'all are ready. I personally recommend a German Shepherd 😉
@@JessicaSojourning Looking at the Art Loeb for next year, probably. And that's only if we can build up enough between now and then. I know it's not considered an easy trail. I'm desperately trying to get in a couple of 1-2 night, simple, breaking-in trips this fall. We planned that for spring, but our sweet dog's age meant we couldn't take him and didn't want to leave him with anyone, either. We haven't backpacked before but are pretty intent on making this happen. I've been combing through your videos and now I think I have 20 trips we want to do. 🤣But I know we need to start simple and build up.
@courtneyatkins8999 The Art Loeb is tough, but totally doable. Especially if you take 2+ nights to complete it. It sounds like you have a realistic plan for getting started though! There are so many great overnight opportunities in Pisgah NF. The Jocassee Gorges are a great place to get your feet under you too.
@@JessicaSojourning Oh, that's awesome. I'll look into the Gorges. Thank you! Also, I figured it out. :) I looked at your website for info about trails and saw some of the devotions you wrote. THAT'S probably the foundation that makes your channel so refreshing. I appreciate this content - it's very useful and beautiful at the same time.
@courtneyatkins8999 That means a lot! I often wonder how many people actually see/read the devotions. So, it's always encouraging to hear someone appreciates them.
Just caught this vlog of your and found it quite entertaining. I have been following four NOBO’s this season Jess Hikes am Sassafras’s, Gadget, Soap and Pumba they just recently summited Katahdin in Maine. I’m 72 yrs old and thinking hard about Nobo the AT in 2025. You are very fun to watch . Any equipment choices you might think I should consider please let me know. And keep on vloging to have talent Fitbit. ❤😊
My girl Maggie is a year n a half, I found her when she was small. She's a blue heeler/border collie and I knew almost from the start this energetic little thing would be my hiking buddy. Even in the heat she loves to just go. We've been both hiking and back country camping together. I couldn't be more thankful for her, especially when she spots something like a bison near the trail before me. (Yes, that has happened.) I look forward to many years with her and both us learning more with each thing we do together
OK, first let me say I love you. I want to marry you. Great video you made, especially about the boundaries, it’s very good advice. Me and my two are about to take our first hike. They are totally under my control. One is seven years old. One is nine years old and I think we’re gonna have fun. But never thought about not letting other people pet them especially when we are on the trail. Thank you.
Haha! I'm truly flattered. That's so exciting. Hopefully, you three have a great adventure together. I'd love to know how it goes.
Which campsite did you camp?
We stayed at trailside #3
What state are you in?
I hike predominantly in North and South Carolina.
@@JessicaSojourning nice. California is tough on dogs. Whack
ok melting the musher's goo into old chapsticks is genius!
Actually got time to watch! So fun! ❤❤❤that your back!
So glad you got a chance to tune in! Hoping to have another trip video or two from last year done by the end of August 🤞
@@JessicaSojourning Very cool! Full support from another traveler!!! ❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯
people underestimate how much courage it takes for someone to get out of their comfort zone and do something truly difficult (and do it alone). And after getting their but kicked, to get up and try again. excellent video and great comeback.
I'm flattered, truly. 😊 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
Great job to keep going! I loved the snippet "the counting keeps the voices away!" ... sometimes it's small things like counting or whatever that keeps you pushing and going through whatever negative space your mind tries to enter! Hopefully you three are having a fantastic 2024 and that your knee is doing better!
Haha! Oh yes, a Jordan original. It goes in the book right next to "or maybe just don't go hiking" 🙄 It's been a pretty good year! She's definitely growing faster than we can keep up with. Hopefully it's been a great 2024 for y'all too!
Beautiful video! I love your creative cinematography as well! This was a lot of fun to watch (I hate that you were in so much pain at the end, though!)
Thank you! 😊 You have no idea how much that means to me. It's my goal for trip videos to be a fun experience 🙌 A couple of days chilling in Hot Springs fixed me right up 🩹
Great video. Love your creative cinematography and story telling! 🌟
Thank you so much! 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Awesome job and video. You should post your itinerary: each day/leg/milage/campsite, how you resupplied, etc. congrats
I sort of did that in the trail journal on my blog. (link in the description) I also have a "5 tips for doing this hike" video! As for resupply, I decided to carry the whole week's worth of food. Folks typically leave a food cache at the halfway point. I didn't want to risk a bear getting to it before I did 😅😉
Can’t wait!!! ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤ WB!!
