I totally agree with your stance on not socializing your dog on the trail. My dog is only allowed to socialize with dogs I know.

I once had a friend put it this way "You would be careful about who your kids hang out with, right? So why not your dogs too?" 😆

I'm just here to say I LOVE your videos. I found them looking for info on the Art Loeb trail and I'm hooked. Sadly, our 13yr. old mastiff/lab/who-knows-what mix passed away over the summer. My daughter (12) and I are the more avid hikers in our family and when the time is right we will absolutely find a good adventure-loving buddy to take with us. I'm watching now and loading up on tips so we'll be prepared when the time comes.Your videos are so refreshing, informative, and pleasant (cheesy but I don't know better word to explain it). Thank you for the work and effort - it's extremely useful for this decent hiker, but new backpacker.

You are too sweet! 😊 I'm so glad you found my videos so helpful. Are you thinking about tackling the Art Loeb this year? Or have you already done it?
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure you'll find the perfect pup to hike with when y'all are ready. I personally recommend a German Shepherd 😉

@@JessicaSojourning Looking at the Art Loeb for next year, probably. And that's only if we can build up enough between now and then. I know it's not considered an easy trail.
I'm desperately trying to get in a couple of 1-2 night, simple, breaking-in trips this fall. We planned that for spring, but our sweet dog's age meant we couldn't take him and didn't want to leave him with anyone, either.
We haven't backpacked before but are pretty intent on making this happen. I've been combing through your videos and now I think I have 20 trips we want to do. 🤣But I know we need to start simple and build up.

The Art Loeb is tough, but totally doable. Especially if you take 2+ nights to complete it. It sounds like you have a realistic plan for getting started though! There are so many great overnight opportunities in Pisgah NF. The Jocassee Gorges are a great place to get your feet under you too.

@@JessicaSojourning Oh, that's awesome. I'll look into the Gorges. Thank you! Also, I figured it out. :) I looked at your website for info about trails and saw some of the devotions you wrote. THAT'S probably the foundation that makes your channel so refreshing. I appreciate this content - it's very useful and beautiful at the same time.

@courtneyatkins8999 That means a lot! I often wonder how many people actually see/read the devotions. So, it's always encouraging to hear someone appreciates them.

one other thing I have taught her when we are going down hill and its not easy going she will go a few steps and wait for me to nav the trail and when we get to a log or something blocking the trail she will go up to it and wait for me to get up to it and then she will jump over then wait for me to cross

My girl Nora does the exact same thing with logs! Teaching them to navigate the trail at a shared pace and wait at those tricky spots is so important.

first grads on the little hiker, I like your vids on hiking with a dog some of the things I have learned from your stuff and learned just doing it on my own. I'm like you I dont let people pet my dog or interact with her she has a different attitude when we are out on trail she is not interested in other people and doesn't like other dogs not aggressive just knows this is her space and thats my hooman so stay back. in the tent she must of been tired and laid down on her mat now when she would hear something she would go into alert mode. her nails I would trim but if you use a sander to round them off it helps not to have sharp edges.as far as treckin poles I take both but most of the time I use just one and use my free hand to take up the slack in her lead which I use a 1 inch nylon lead 15 foot and my end is looped to my belt I dont care for the retractable ones for reason if she falls or gets into a bad spot i can lift her or pull her out with it I just dont trust the little rope in those other ones even if it says it will hold 100 lbs or so. no bears where I'm at and too old to be going so far I need resupply

Thank you so much! We're getting her started early. 😄
That's a great point in favor of the traditional leash over retractable ones. I haven't thought about how helpful it would be in an emergency situation.

@@JessicaSojourning I hike mostly in Mammoth Cave park and there is a lot of holes and unseen cracks that a dog could fall in and being able to hoist them out took first over the ease of one of the retractable ones

Nobody has the right to approach any dog. And dogs should be kept on a leash. No need for a muzzle just keep control. A muzzled dog isn’t much protection.
