Intermezzo in E minor by Manuel Ponce
มุมมอง 2596 หลายเดือนก่อน
Intermezzo in E minor by Manuel Ponce performed by Mark Winston, piano. Though this composition is undated, it was likely composed around 1911, as it is in Ponce's mature Romantic style. It contains many elements borrowed from popular 19th century canciones, most notably the song form and near constant use of parallel 3rds in the right hand figurations. Though this piece likely predates Ponce's...

    What about recording directly to the flash drive?

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It records directly to flash drive. I've not done that for my recordings as I preferred recording the line out more for the process of recording that way and having the audio directly in my DAW after each take. I've seen some videos on TH-cam that use the flash drive recording. The samples sound really nice as standalone audio, but I find it to be less realistic when combined with video shot in a small room. If you use the flash drive recording method, you could also record the room sound with a microphone. The benefit of the flash drive method is that you'd likely have a significantly lower noise floor than with the line out to an audio interface. You could also record the room sound of the gp510 replaying your performance, which would reduce a lot of unwanted noises from the bench or a squeaky floor.

    excellent video. however take the lid off the piano because microphones are unforgiving of sound bounce. you dont need the lid since your not playing towards an audience. a few heavy moving blankets draped near the walls will improve that even more and wth gromets and hooks easily remover. Nice playing by the way.

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. The H4 essentials should work well for recording guitar. The updates they've made to the new Zoom Handy recorders are good, especially the LCD display and 32 bit float recording. I don't think H4 essentials can use different microphone capsules. I also don't know whether the x/y mics on the h4 can change angles as on the h6.

      Yes, I think the power of the piano is good, especially for home use. It can go quite loud if necessary, but I have not found a need to turn it up to full volume. Aside from how loud it can go, the piano can be played at very low volumes because of the volume control. For me that was very important when I bought the piano because I lived in an apartment building at the time. Are you looking into the GP510 for use at home?

    Ok i'm confused... The sound that i hear when you play guitar...how can that be the sound of the recording you are actually making? The Zoom H6 is recording, so it seems to me it is not playing what you recorded.... Please explain...

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for asking. I'm not sure of the exact confusion you're expressing but I can explain a few things about the recording. The sound in the video is all from the Zoom, including the speaking. I did a sound check to set a level for the loudest parts before I recorded. The footage that shows the meter on the Zoom is from that soundcheck. One drawback with the zoom for musicians is that it is difficult to see the meters when you're seated on the microphone side of things. It is possible my playing during the takes caused the recorder to peak and I didn't catch Some of the chords I'm playing are odd voicings that I like to use. The camera angle on the playing shots doesn't show my left hand. That was accidental and something I didn't catch when filming. I have a fairly wide reach on the fretboard. The chords I'm playing are all on the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings with wide voicings and some added 7s and 9ths. The wide voicings on those wound strings make for more aggressive sounding chords when strummed heavily. The first riff is a B7 with only the root and 7 played on 5th and 6th string (12th and 7th fret respectively). The second chord is a E/G to a G5 on the same two strings (7th fret on 5th 3rd fret on 6th). On the third riff, which kind of sounds like there's distortion, I'm playing a Bminor on those three strings in a wide voicing then sliding down to a e minor then an e/g with a lead on the 4th string. I play the B minor chord at 7th fret on 6th string with 9th fret on 5th string and 12th feet on 4th string. It's like a power chord with a 10th added on top. I think that wide voicing on the low wound strings with aggressive strumming makes for a less pretty, seemingly distorted sound. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks for watching! The H6 has combo jacks, so it can take xlr or trs input. The inputs are mic/line level. The impedance on the 4 combo inputs is rated as "1.8k ohms or more," according to Zoom's site. Thanks for suggesting a comparison video. I hope to do another video showing more of the devices features at some point in the near future. They just released a new version of the H6. Have you checked out that device?

      My mixer specifically has a HI-Z guitar channel. I guessing its best to go thru a DI Box with the guitar and output line level to H6 in order to maximize the gain level controlI'm new at this but that my guess. The piano itself is not great, and the room is probably the last one to record in, too small, too many early reflections, un-broken square shape, almost to the point of rendering the experiment moot. One tip I've learned is to place some sort of coincident pair just above the extended plane of the lid, pointed at the harp, at the same nape/bend in the middle, as the lid is a reflector and you're getting those reflections mixed with direct-off-the-harp sound waves, confusing the sound with possible phase cancellations. OR, even better, remove the lid, it's really for live sound projection, works against clear recording.

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. That sounds like an interesting technique. I'd love to see a video demonstrating it. Cheers!

    • @zdogg8
      @zdogg8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markandrewpiano You're basically doing that, Min 9:00, at 6', just bring mics a bit more close to piano, that will then be high enough to exceed the plane of the lid by just a tad. Mics can be A,B or ORTF - or -- the xy as per your Zoom Mic. Probably your tripod pole is about 12-18" out from the rim of the piano. Aim mix downward toward the harp.

    Subscribed! Doesn't Casio have an app that allows you to customize the size and acoustics of the room before recording directly to USB? Yamaha offers this feature with their Smart Pianist app and CSP & CLP ranges. I imagine using a similar feature on Casio would save a lot of time and money yet accomplish the same dynamic result?

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment! I'm not sure which app you're referring to for the Casio pianos. They released an ipad (and android?) app that is used to adjust settings on the PXS series of pianos. While the GP-510 was released around the same time or shortly after the PXS series, Casio did not include bluetooth and app functionality with it. I think if you're recording just the audio and not pairing it with video, the reverbs on the GP-510 are really beautiful sounding. My issue was that they are modeled on much bigger, acoustically pleasant spaces. The reverb settings on the GP-510 are adjustable in its menu, but I wouldn't call those settings customizable as they offer only a few adjustments. I don't have the piano close by at the moment, and I don't remember exactly what you can change on the reverb. I do remember I found it tedious and the results unsatisfactory enough to set up my microphones instead. I was aiming to get a reverb sound that resembled the very small room I was recording in because it was for use with a video. I think the microphones did a decent job. There are certainly alternative ways to do it. Definitely a customized reverb would be nice and would save time after it's set right. I also thought of creating an impulse response in Ableton to model the room and one to model the piano's speakers....maybe that's a future video. Whatever way you accomplish it, I think it's all worth experimenting with.

      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Great observation. The small room leads to some issues with the very short reverb in there. I'm hoping to have a chance to do a video in a larger space where the reflections will be longer and have a more pleasant sound.

    • @скоп_007
      @скоп_007 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markandrewpiano It's true. But the peculiarity of human hearing is such that if you add reverberation to a recording, then when listening, it is added again, in the listener’s room. And the human brain perceives this as strange, because there is no double reverberation in nature. If you listen with headphones, it's acceptable. But if from monitors, then reverberation is added in any listening room. Therefore, when recording, they usually place several microphones, one inside the piano, the other in the room. And these 2 sources are used to find the best sound on the final recording.

      I really like the Gp510. The action is really nice, as are the three piano tones. I prefer it to other digital pianos I've tried. I think it is a really great instrument for a smaller space and is a great alternative to most upright pianos. I've not played that model of Roland but have played several of their instruments with the PHA-50 action. They're nice as well. I have been a fan of the Casio instruments for a while, particularly because of their tone, and that was one of the reasons I opted for the GP510 vs the Kawai or Roland models that were available.

      @michabroda4719 yes, I went a completely different route. I purchased a Roland fantom 8 with 88 keys; the one with the Pha50 action. The LX17, which is the predecessor to the LX708 has the PHA50 action. It's a nice action. The fantom 8 was in mint condition and I got it for 2k usd. The keyboard will be in one of my rooms, so it doesn't need to look like a piano.

    90 degrees is picking up the direct sound more, and 120 degrees is picking up more of the room, which sounds cool in the bare room, more room tone, but f you want to add reverb later, the 90 degrees would be better. An engineer I work with says he always mics acoustic "vertically", (the recorder on it's side in this case) I need to play around with that.

      Great observation about the differences in room sound between the two angles. That's an interesting suggestion to turn the recorder sideways. It makes a lot of sense to do that so the mic is focused across the strings, as it would be when recording piano. I'll experiment with that.

    Hallo een leerzaam stukje ,ik Heb een vraag over de Casio gpv510 .ik ben aan het twijfelen tussen deze Casio gp 510 of een Kawai ca109 . Ik vind zowel orgelklanken als pianoklanken belangrijk.hoe zijn die bij de Casio ? kun je daar wat over zeggen.. Vriendelijke groeten Richard van Asselt

      Hi Richard, Thanks for watching! Great question. I really like the piano tones on the Casio GP510. My favorite is the Hamburg, but the Berlin and the Vienna grand tones are really nice too. The Berlin is a Bechstein sample, Hamburg is Steinway, and Vienna is Bosendorfer. For piano sounds, I think the Casio has some really great samples. I've only played with the organ sounds a little bit, but they're nice too. I've always been more into piano sound than organ, so I would not be a great judge of how the tones compare to other instruments. I am only a little familiar with digital Kawai instruments. I played a few when shopping for my Casio in 2021. I think I played the CA709 or something along those lines. The piano tones were good as well. I didn't like the action on that instrument, as it felt more like a stage piano action. The speakers are also set up differently from the Casio. On the Kawai, I remember the sound projecting from the back towards the wall. On the casio, they mostly project towards the player. That makes for a different experience. You might prefer one or the other. If you can, go to some piano stores and try them out. I went to 4 or 5 stores to compare instruments when shopping. It was helpful to hear the Casio and Kawai pianos in different rooms, and to compare them to other digital and acoustic instruments. Let me know if you have any other questions. Also, check out Merriam Pianos channel on TH-cam. They have a lot of reviews of digital instruments. Best, Mark

    Your song sounded more crisp, less distorted setting the H6 recorder to 120 degrees. At 90 degrees the distortion was a bit unpleasant to listen. Made the guitar seem out-of-tune or using a unique but distorted tuning.

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback! I agree that the 120 degree setting sounds better in the video. I didn't add distortion to the recording. The guitar is a Yamaha APX-5A, which I've owned since 2004. It is a medium body acoustic, and it does have it's own characteristic sound. Ive always liked ifs sound. The song uses widely voiced chords played on the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings. That could lend to the somewhat distorted tone. I also recorded it in my apartment, which is an untreated space, so there's likely some room issues creeping into the recording as well. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll experiment with it some more.

    Great video thank you, did you need to post processing to sync the recorded sound by the Zoom H6 with the video, or they were in sync during the recording?

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Great question. Yes, I synced the Zoom audio in post. For this video I synced the Zoom audio manually in Ableton. I placed each sample on it's own track and placed it as best I could to sync with the video. Monitoring gain levels on the zoom is tricky when recording yourself, and I didn't do a sound check each time I moved the microphone. Because of that, I also adjusted the volume of each sample in Ableton to match a similar peak level. That meant each sample would have relatively the same loudness for viewers. I felt that would give a more neutral impression of the tone of each microphone placement. I recorded the dialogue using a Rode Wireless Go II connected directly to the camera. I left the dialog volume consistent throughout. I'd probably manage the audio workflow differently if I did the video again. I filmed the video over the course of about two hours, so I was often concerned about batteries running out or memory filling up on devices, especially my camera. I stopped and started a lot on both the camera and the Zoom. This created extra work in post with sorting through files and lining up the clips. A better approach may have been to let the zoom record nonstop and then sync the dialog to that. Many video editors can do that very quickly if given two sources recorded at the same time.

    Nice. Why did you use the 3 mics? For the room reverb etc?

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Yes, I used the 3 mics for capturing the room. I was experimenting with different methods of recording that would normally be used on an acoustic piano. I was hoping to capture sound that more closely matched the setting of the video, rather than adding artificial reverb after the piece was recorded.

    how does the hybrid action feel

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Great question. I think the action is incredible for the price point and especially for a digital piano. It's very fast and secure feeling. It has pretty good key depth and is well cushioned in the key bed. A player may like it more or less depending on what they've been playing on a regular basis. I upgraded to the GP-510 from a Casio Privia PX560. To me, the GP action was amazingly fast, consistent, and comfortable. Combined with the sound production on the instrument, it makes the experience of playing a digital piano much more realistic and allows for execution of more virtuosic music. I prepared about 45 minutes of classical rep on the GP 510 for school auditions (Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Mozart, Debussy). It made it much easier to switch to an acoustic piano when I had to record. That being said, if you're used to an acoustic instrument you may have a different reaction to the GP action. I've been at school for the last year practicing on acoustic grands daily. When I've gone back to play the Casio, I've found it less exciting than I used to. I think some of that has to do with the sound. The sound on the Casio is beautiful, but it simply doesn't match the immersive sound of a large acoustic piano. I think this affects the way I play and respond to the keys. The last time I played my GP510, it felt like I had to work harder to play fast and it was generally harder to play evenly on it. The default velocity settings can probably be altered to compensate for some of that. The room can also affect how you hear the instrument, which can affect how you play it. With all of that in mind, the GP-510 is an incredible instrument if you look at it for what it is, rather than as an equal substitute for a grand piano. Its action and sound are fantastic, and I don't think you'd find better action on a digital under $10k. The other thing to compare it to is a similarly priced upright. The GP-510 has action that I'd take over most uprights its price range. Additionally, it has all the features that make a digital great, like volume control, multiple sounds, DSP effects, MIDI, etc. Have you had the chance to try a GP-510 yet? I recommend going to a piano shop and playing one, as well as comparing it to other digital and acoustic instruments.

    • @markandrewpiano
      @markandrewpiano ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found the video informative. Yes, you should be able to connect it to an android phone for use as a microphone with the phone's video. You will need to use a TRRS cable, which is like this one: a.co/d/fS1pjZi The sound from the H6 will be saved automatically as the video sound. I haven't tested that setup yet with the H6, but I have used other mics with my android, like a rode video micro. My Samsung phone has an automatic volume adjustment, which I haven't figured out how to bypass. If I were to use the H6 with the phone, I'd do some test recordings and adjust the levels on the H6 to get the right levels. The native video app on my phone has a bug where the audio goes out of sync as the video plays. Because of this, I have another app called Open Camera that works better.

    Thank you so much for the video! It's very educational and gives me ideas about what I can do when recording from a digital piano. I just got my Kawai NV5S delivered. Though the NV5S is a hybrid with different technology frrom the GP510, the sound projections are of similar nature in both instruments (though, the NV5s also got a wooden soundboard at the back). The idea of mixing the line-out and room mics outputs that realistically represents your personal environment is really interesting. I hope to try it in the future.
