The single "benefits" you describe of MKV is incorrect. MKV is only a container format of other video and audio codecs. The crash you observed on your computer was with the random codec your video authoring software used in the MKV that allowed partial recording. Handbrake (also free) may be a more versatile conversion tool, which can select the particular data streams you need in the MKV container and can export to MP4 and a comparable bitrate to avoid loss of quality.
Thanks for the suggestion, @mmhm007! VLC also works great. I used OBS just because that is usually what people use to make the MKV in the first place. But VLC is good, too!
