    These guitars are really cool and great for modding. That pic guard is awsome dude . I put jay mascis signature pick ups in mine but they weren’t for me so just put fender 65 in and they’re pretty cool . But I really like those ones you just put in they sound great . It’s a lot of fun playing around with these guitars

    Thanks for the insightful rant. Every artist feels what you're putting a voice to... the idea that merging the process of creation with commodity in the marketplace, necessarily kills the work of art, or at least the process itself. Gary V's approach works for some.. but artists play a different role. We're meant to interface between the unknown spiritual world, and the world of the material.. always on the edge, contending with something real and vital and alive.. and that doesn't fit on a content creation schedule.. nor can all of it be documented without anchoring us in the purely material. When an artist is anchored to the material rather than having one foot in the spiritual realm.. then what was meant to be art is instead propaganda. This is exactly why I enjoyed this video. Because it didn't fit. Instead of fitting, you grappled with the spiritual world, out loud. And therefore you created art rather than propaganda. Whether you share this process in music or in a monologue - this is what art is for. How does one monetize that? Here's my best guess: you don't. Instead you find (or gather) a group of like minded people. A small group. And you share outloud with them, and you listen to them in equal measure. And you change one another. This is the microcosm of real creative work. We can create it on the micro level if we seek to find and serve those on the same journey. Sometimes that microcosm gets magnified by the market. Sometimes it doesn't. The point is to be truly engaged in the work alongside others trying to dig into the same spiritual doorway you are, or trying to contend with the same mysteries. This is where lives are changed. Thanks for the insight into your world.

      That’s a huge bummer to hear! I haven’t had any noise issues, but I also have my guitar super shielded, and I live in the middle position, so I’m almost always noise cancelling. im sorry about your experience, hope your pickup journey lands you on something that really works for your setup!

      @@ambientbenji I take back what I said After some time I can definitely feel the difference I just hadn’t spent enough time with them to notice how different they are The original pick ups were wound in the low 6k range, these are much higher in the mid 8k and they have the same jazzmaster hi-fi feel but grittier, they push my amo so that it sounds much fuller, they’re still crazy bright but they respond a lot better to having the tone rolled, with a tube screamer I am in total bliss I also have a mod that allows me to use the rhythm circuit with both pick ups which gives me a more mellow tone on the bridge making it sound a lot like a hollowbody

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      sorry it took me a whole week to respond!!! Glad I could help you get some direction on the pickups, they have quickly become my go to, I really can't play a show without this guitar, they do so well. They can handle a surprising amount of gain as well, I bought them for clean/pushed clean sounds and fuzz, but I just use them everywhere. The pick guard is just a cheap black plastic pick guard from amazon, I just also happen to have a girlfriend who has a degree in art, so I gave it to her and said "do what you will". Get some acrylic paints and go crazy with your own pickguard, make it your own!

    Love your setup, Benji! I'm glad The Algorithm pointed me your way! You mentioned wanting more VCAs - If that's still a concern for you after 2-1/2 years and 2200 more subs (congrats!), there's a company called Tidbit Audio that makes in-line VCAs and other small utilities that you can plug directly into sockets. I have a small setup going with a RackBrute boat, and I've found them to be a real space saver. However, if listening to your set is any indication, your creativity doesn't suffer at all for want of VCAs. Beautiful work!

    The Lollars sound better. More “full” sound.

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. Less output, more “tone”. They are really perfect for a one guitar band where you need to be able to fill up a space without also taking over the mix.

    • @jasonswitzer1748
      @jasonswitzer1748 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ambientbenji do you think they wouldn’t be as good if there was a 2 guitar band and the guitarist with the Lollars was the lead/played solos?

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji ปีที่แล้ว

      @jasonswitzer1748 that’s a tough question! It really depends on the style of song, and the style of lead you play, and what your rhythm guitarist is doing. In one of my bands, we have 2 guitarists, and i do a lot of leads and solos, and it really depends on the song. For example, we play a cover of The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness by The National, and that specific lead sound has never sounded better than with the lollars, it has a really scratchy character, where the top end emphasis really makes a great sound. However, we have a song called Hardly that we play, and it’s sort of a slow jam style song, and the solo and rhythm parts feel better with humbuckers. As a rule, I like the lollars for a single guitar band just a little more, because they have such a unique tonal fullness, that in a one guitar band they end up filling out a lot of space, without being overpowering to the mix. In a two guitar setting, they can absolutely RIP, but they might not be your first choice for a more traditional sound, especially as more gain comes into the picture, unless you are using pedals that are going to boost midrange and cut bass specifically for your solos. TLDR they rule for pretty much anything, but if you want to be picky, some may prefer them as a rhythm sound in a 2 band context.

    I'm in the process of planning an offset build with a local luthier and I was set on a humbucker in bridge and P90 in the neck until I played another offset he had built. It also had the Lollar Black Bobbins, and now I'm very torn.

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh that’s a tough choice you got! I would definitely recommend the BBs, every day I play it they feel better and better, and every tone I try is better than the last! However, if you are playing anything in the high gain territory, the bucker is always going to be king, just for the low end and noise factors. These pickups are certainly not going to push the front end of anything particularly hard without some boost, but as a clean/light drive, mid gain, or fuzzed out guitar, it really shines. I’m playing a gig in a few weeks, and I’m going to go back and forth with this for lower gain songs, and my les Paul for higher gain, so its really context dependent. Best of luck!

Do have videos explaining how your thoughts lead to using devices like this? That was amazing - I have been watching synth/modular device videos for many years - and this just blew me away. • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji ปีที่แล้ว

      I would disagree with the word “terrible” because I don’t dislike the sound out of it, but I will end up changing them at a point to get a bit less output, a bit more top end, and a bit more “authentic” with the sound at some point. But they definitely work for now, so I wouldn’t say they are bad pickups, just not quite tuned to my tastes.
