    Just discovered your channel and rally like your format. Also like how you’ve created your palette case to integrate with your existing guitar pedal setup.I’ve spend a lot of time on how to optimise my palette setup and you could switch Dixie for a full voice to save envelope and vca space, or used a a WMD Javelin envelope with built in VCA but then you only get one in the same space you currently have two. Hmmm. Clep is awesome modulating the wmd filter which has built in attenuation already. Keep up the good work!

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! and thanks for the advice, I love to hear how others optimize their setup. The javelin was a module i was eyeing suuuuper hard for a while, and I might snag one just to try it out in the future. A full voice module instead of the dixie is also a real move, but I have also found a love with just using the unfiltered sine wave output, so I might replace it with some 2hp Sine modules, just to get a whole chorus of noise. Love the ideas!!! glad you enjoyed the video!

      @@ambientbenji Some of my text is apparently missing. The ghost in the machine tok it probably. Or gremlins, or maybe hamsters? Anyway.
      I filled up a larger case and as I got more modules than hp I thought this case would be great for sequencer, sound mixer, line in and out and a send and return module I got. A friend of mine with a large system also use a small case for concentrated studies something that seems like a great idea, + that case is good for taking on trips. Maybe even with the usb power module for use with a chargeable brick.
      Sorry if I come of as pushy here but I'm just thinking loudly about your system as even though I got a larger case your thinking seems similar to mine, so don't feel obliged to reply again.
      As you said you don't use the 2hp adsr that much I agree with your thoughts about getting another vca. What you could do if you need more space is to replace the attenuator you got with a 1u dual vca or two, maybe in combination with the duatt 1u attenuator. I use a Quad atten WMD SSF outside my case as garnish on my cable salad since it is unpowered, but it hasn't got the uni +\- switch though. Btw, there are also other unpowered modules like some of the lpg's, and unpowered modules are usually not that expensive, + easy to diy. My point with all this is that you might benefit from a cv mixer and the unity mixer from 2hp could be a good idea.
      Another idea is the Arturia Keystep. For me anyway as I also use a generative sequencer, Bloom, I think it is interesting to switch between that one and the Keystep for variation and practising how to make seamless transitions between melodies.

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are some great ideas! I’m definitely looking at more mixers, currently I’m using the quadratt as a CV and an audio mixer, because I can do both simultaneously, but for my own workflow I would really like to split that out. I do also really like the intellijel 1u VCA things, I might want to find a diy version with a built in attenuverter for the cv input though. For now I’m not as limited as I usually want the same modulation source modulating the same things at similar intensities, but once I expand to something larger with more modulation sources (I’m looking at you Maths... and malekko quad LFO... and quadrax... lol) that’s when I am going to want lots of dedicated CV mixers, and attenuverters, just to take full advantage of what I can do.
      Thanks for the advice, I will definitely be using it in the future!

      @@ambientbenji If you know you are going to get a bigger case you should definitely have a look at videos on Pamela's new Workout for all the amazing stuff she can do. So small yet 8 outputs for attenuated modulations, clock, random, euclidean rhythms, etc. Shallow menu and really easy to use to. I'm an idiot but I hardly had to look at the manual at all. When I got it I was like "why didn't I just get this much earlier?". This one and Bloom made my system really come together as a system.
      Regarding system but not related to eurorack, writing that twice in one sentence made me think of this:

      I really want a pams! I almost bought one in the past, and I definitely want one for future use. The bloom is also a really interesting module, I really want to sort of shoot out the marbles vs a blooms and a chance, it seems to be like they are two sides of the same coin, but still so incredibly distinct and different. That would be a fun video to make, obviously I need a lot more money to make that happen, haha, but I am hoping to do something like that in the future!

      @ambientbenji  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey!
      So, looking at your modules, you have plenty of voices and plenty of modulation, so I’d say you have plenty to get yourself some real cool evolving patterns! Maybe use an lfo from maths to control the rate of the wogglebug, to give you random voltages and pulses. Then hook it into the trigger input on the key step in a random arpeggiator mode and have that control a voice, and that way you get random rhythms and semi random notes.
      I’d also say a generative sequencer like a Turing machine, combined with a quantizer would allow you to do a lot of really simple but really effective generative Melodies, and then you could layer drones with the key step, and have some full compositions. But you really have plenty to work with! Deff work with what you have, and then expand only when it feels best for you to do so!

    • @ambientbenji

      Hey! so I actually am not using the midi interfacing of the case, you can get a 1u module that expands that functionality, but the built in part is just the connector. I personally like it, because I dont use midi all that much, so having it all put in there would bring the cost up, so I’m glad about it, but i’m probably in the minority there.

    How is this "minimal" everything there is a pre-processed "do it for me" factory. You could be even more "minimal" by using a laptop, or just playing someone else's song on your phone, and waving it around for cool "WHOOSH!" effects.

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you familiar with modular synths in general? This is about as minimal as you can get. It’s inherently very deep and complex, and usually involves huge walls of gear. I have seen cases twice the size of that case called “too small” so, relatively, very minimal. And it’s also minimal in its approach. I chose the modules intentionally, limiting myself to less options, so I can see what I can do with less. Laptop feels pretty maximal, since it can do pretty much anything. If this isn’t your bag, fine, just feels kinda weird to go so hard in the negative direction. Weird vibes all around.

    • @buckstarchaser2376
      @buckstarchaser2376 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ambientbenji My argument is that you're using the word "minimal" for modules that mostly do the work for you, meaning you're minimizing the work, and therefore creativity, that you put into the outcome.
      The size of the kit isn't really the factor here, since you could replace that rack (plus everything else on and under the table to produce your tune) with a much larger, honest-er unit that won't do much without your conscious effort at the controls.
      That is what I was looking to see when I saw the title of your video. Not a collection of "these parts do more song per unit area than other parts, therefore they are "minimal".
      If it came off as "weird", try to see this video from my point of view. I'm looking for basic info on using basic modules that together form maybe one of the modules in your kit, but the search output and recommendations output from YT are exponentially biassed towards videos that can be converted to advertisement revenues, which come from patented or otherwise pre-made modules, like you are demonstrating. I'm at least as irritated with YT as I am with the discrepancy of definitions. Apply the relevant type and portion of criticism where it belongs, and it will feel less weird.

    • @ambientbenji
      @ambientbenji  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I’ll disagree about the algorithm pushing ad revenue, because I’ve not even made enough money to cash out after months of being monetized… I just like using contained voice modules and generative sequencers, and so I’m going to talk about what I like. but aside from that, I guess I can see you being frustrated about it being more of a generative machine, and less of a controlled machine, but that’s a hugely personal choice, and something I switch back and forth between all the time. I can disagree about generative sequencers and full voices modules minimizing the creativity, because it’s all about how you patch things, I make my own presets in the plonk so the voices are unique to my tastes, etc, but if you feel that way, I doubt I’m gonna convince you of anything like that.
      If you are looking for very basic information about simple modules, and how to form them to be more traditional voices, that’s sick, I guess I just don’t know why you are mad at someone else for not making music the way you want to… I got into modular because, after 10+ years of being a guitarist, keyboardist, drummer, etc, I decided I wanted to take a step towards something I have less physical control over, and letting something do the work, and me trying to react to that in ways to make it more musical. Finding creativity in different ways than I am used to, and all that.
      If you are into modular for just having a regular, flexible synth, I don’t think you need much in the terms of TH-cam tutorials, and I’d just spend time with a program like VCV and see if you like it, because there’s not much more that can be learned once you understand how to route your voices and modulation. At that point, it’s about being hands on more than anything else. This is just my case, I use for my type of stuff.
      I’m sorry you didn’t find my video informative to your specific use case, I guess I’m still just taken back by how strong you decided to voice this to some random person. I’d love to talk modules and give advice, but most people I know are less inclined to do so when someone gets mad at their module choices. Hope you found something useful out of this comment, but if not, best of luck on your search for what you are looking for.

      @@ambientbenji I can't control how people interpret my statements. It's common that people read all sorts of emotion into textual speach, but text doesn't effectively convey tone. I'm finding this as a significant impediment when attempting to communicate with musicians, vs, for example, electronics engineers and army buddies. It's just a language thing. :)
      If I didn't come through clearly in my last post, I'm saying that YT is pushing your content on me - not because you are selling a product - but because they are, and you're demoing the products they're helping to sell. You're just not getting a cut. Therefore, you too are getting the wrong viewers, while I'm getting the wrong posters. :)
