I also wanted to mark the queen. My view is that do not hurry to mark the queen. You need to let her work for 3-4 weeks before marking. Especially if you starting like me. I bough one hive. Did splits. I got not 3 hives. In 2 I got new queens. In one I cought her into marking box have not closed till the end and she got out of the box and started walking on my hand and went up. As I was alone I don't know where is she. 2 days after that I did not see her in hive. The good thing she laid some eggs so the split will get new nurse bees but again I'm not sure if she is alive and if she is in hive. Then I tried to mark the queen in 2nd split. It was a disaster again. She fell on to the ground into the grass. I did a stupid thing I tried to catch her using a quuen catcher with a spring but I could have injured her or even killed. Eventually I caught her and put into the marking tool. I marked her then released and it seems it flew away. But it could be regular be flew. So again I tried to find her and can't find. BTW the bees have started building queen cells even before I found her. They probably sort of accepted her just to make their own queen. So they building right now 8 queen cells and I can't find that marked queen. After this 2 marking queen attempts I made a strong decision marking queen after 1 month once the split gets stronger. I start to think that all the marking tools are PITA and it seems bettter to do catching just for her wings and then take for her legs.
