Learning to Figure Skate in my 20's - 2 Year Adult Figure Skating Progress Timeline
Here is my journey as an adult figure skater over the course of two years! Since it may be confusing, my two year anniversary was in 2023, I just didnt get around to making this video until now!! All of the clips used are from my first 2 years of skating even though it has been 3 years at the time of posting. I hope that makes sense!! Also worth mentioning- I was injured which took me off the ice for about 6 months, so `Technically` this is about 1.5 years of on ice experience with a break inbetween.

I started skating on April 24th 2021, this was filmed on December 31st 2021. I missed months 6 and 7, but you can see some of what I was up to during that time on my Instagram @marshallspins . Why did I miss months 6 and 7? well, in-between months 3 and 4 videos, I had to take almost 2 full months off of skating due to my rink being closed. I filmed month 4 right after getting back on the ice, ...

    Yes! I am also I beginner but I have been practicing for around 10-11 months ( Minus the time with my injury ) trust me, things will get hard once you start learning harder moves but one thing is to never give up❤️ I’ve already been learning the scratch spin for a month and I almost got it successfully, this stuff will take time in the future so please, stay with it no matter what!❤️

    I can't wait to start skating! Watching videos like these, where adults start skating, are very motivating. I just bought my first pair of skates as an almost 22 year old. I have absolutely no experience aside from skating a handful of times in rental skates, so I'm both terrified and excited.

  • @steveherbert9575

    Some nice spins there. Try to point your toe and turn out your foot a little on the camel spin. Turn your foot out on the sit spin and you'll be able to get lower. As with all skating spins and jumps, practice, practice, practice - but you're doing well. Keep it up, well done 😊

Also, I didn't really get into it in the video, but during this time I was also learning my first skating program!! I performed it at a competition at the end of April, and I'll be showing you that soon as well. Finally, I started taking weekly private lessons after coming back from skating!! In the past I've taken some private lessons here and there, as well as group lessons for the first 3 months, but really, a large part of my skating has been self taught. Its been soo nice to finally get some consistent coaching!!!

    This is amazing. I’m looking to start ice skating lessons (I have zero background in ice skating and have only been in skates a couple of times). I’ve just always dreamed of being able to skate properly. What kind of progress do you think a complete novice could make in 3 months ?

    • @marshallspins
      @marshallspins ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!! My short answer is that if you work hard I think you can start your waltz jump and two foot spin in 3 months. But my long answer is more complicated. Everyone improves at such drastically different rates, especially early on, that it's really hard to say. Some people can only make it to their group class once a week, some practice once or twice between classes, some people skate every day. The time you put in is very closely correlated with how fast you improve. Everyone also has certain parts of skating that they are more drawn to and will improve faster at those things. For example, I LOVE jumping haha. As a result I not only practice them more, but have a much more keen analytical eye for noticing minor details that could be improved. Meanwhile it took me like a year and a half of skating to realize that my spin entrances are still wrong lol! So my spins and jumps are at drastically different achievement levels. Setting goals is important for improving, but remember that your goal probably isn't to "be better than everyone else" haha. I wouldn't worry about if you're improving at the rate that you're "supposed to", rather, focus on the parts of skating that feed your heart. Sorry this turned into an essay but the more I thought about the question the more I realized I had a lot to say haha. I guess im feeling sentimental. I couple probably talk for hours about this but I'll spare you haha

    How did you progress so fast? It is super impressive! I originally quit due to finances, but now live 3 hours from any rink due to college. Do you have any tips on what rollerskates the best train for off-ice? I know you mentioned in other videos you roller-skated

    • @marshallspins
      @marshallspins ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! For the first question, recording myself has helped SO MUCH with improving. It allows me to basically be my own coach. I'll watch my video back then compare that skill to what I see skaters I look up to doing and try to copy them more closely. It takes some practice to develop that analytical eye but it is such a valuable skill! I don't really do off ice skating, I just knew how to Rollerblade as a kid. But I recently got jackson mirage frames and put them on my old jackson freestyle boot and I like them! I haven't gotten to use them much yet bc I don't have good smooth surface options near me, but I will say that they definitely feel a bit different than on ice. Spins in particular I haven't figured out besides a basic 2 foot. I wonder if off-ice inline brand skates are more similar to on ice but I've heard bad things about the quality and longevity of them which is why I didn't buy them.

  • @goeticfolklore
    @goeticfolklore ปีที่แล้ว

    I had to quit at 17 when I began training my single jumps, I progressed way slower than most people only reaching around Freestyle 2 skills after 3 years of weekly practice. Your video inspires me to remember when I do get back out there, the work was not for nothing and goals are achievable!
