    God, I'm such a chaotic, petulant child of a writer lol. To me it's, "plan a writing schedule - ignore it because you want to read instead - become inspired and realise you can't focus on what you're reading until you've written your scenes down - walk frustrated to your computer because you're now forced to not procrastinate". I would probably not write a single word, ever, if I didn't feel forced to. And I absolutely love writing. Guess that's ADHD for ya.

    I’m the opposite. I have to get my words written in the morning. If I dive into someone else’s story, I have a hard time coming back out. But I absolutely agree to finding writing you like and figuring out WHY you like it. So so helpful, to the point I think it’s necessary in order to find your own voice.

    Not strict enough. I recently read a book in the 3rd person, and in the first chapter there was a description of the MC while she was looking at her reflection in the mirror. The time period also wasn't fully clear because it took the author half way through chapter 3 to clarify that they wear dresses and get carriages. Zero mourning rules, zero description of the style of dress, only the material, there was one car mentioned and it was a bank person. And two young ladies in their twenties were driven to bank but where walking/taking the carriage back home. The dialog was modern and not old-timey upperclass, which they are meant to be

    REALLLLL. I write linearly and I am slow as hell. That whole "if you're stuck on one scene, just jump ahead to something you want to write more!" thing has never worked for me, because if I'm really struggling with a scene, it's usually because there's a fundamental problem I need to work through or fix. I need to figure out what it is before I can keep going, and sometimes figuring it out takes a long time. A looong time.

    This is why I prefer writing 1st person point of view for long stories. It's easier for the character to have the traits I want for them to have. Shorter stories are fast paced and doesn't really need as much character building that longer stories need. This is just my take on this and isn't necessarily true for everyone.

    The best advice I've received is, described your book in a short paragraph, then a sentence, then in just one word. And particularly for the word one it should tie into the theme. If you can't describe it this way then one of two things could be happening 1. You don’t have a good understanding of where you are going or what the book is about. Or 2. You have too much going on and need to put some of the ideas down for a different story.

  • @jackmeowmeowmeow2177

    Problem here is that in multiple POV, character voices will shift, and must shift. If one character comes from a high class background they will surely act more formal, but someone who grew up as a street kid will likely use more slang terms and colloquialisms. I have found a lot of editors I’ve worked with very problematic in this regard where they want a monotonous voice, or worse, want to rewrite your story for you. I personally dump most of these types because what I look for with an editor is someone who will catch errors in the prose like missed words, double words, words out of place, typos, grammar issues. Once they try tampering with plot or world building or characters, I will drop them.

      @@jackmeowmeowmeow2177 obviously if you have multiple pov’s, then the voice will shift depending on the character. this is about when the voice of one narrator is inconsistent across the draft without stylistic reason. as for editors, there are differences between a developmental editor, a copy editor and a proofreader. dev editors are meant to poke holes in your story and will often raise questions about structural things like worldbuilding and character arcs (though “rewriting” is a pretty big yikes). it sounds like what you need is just copy edits and a proofreader. editors should definitely be clear about their specific services and editorial style.

    I'm in a rush because every time I come up with a premise I would love to write, I see 5 Publishers Marketplace announcements for books just like my new idea. Literally! So I'm terrified whatever I write next will be old and stale by the time I'm actually done with the first draft. I know it's unreasonable to want a completely untouched idea, but it's discouraging to see everyone get to follow through with the same idea, especially for a slow writer like me.

    • @KrisMF
      @KrisMF 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      understandable! i still think that different writers who have overlapping ideas won’t necessarily write the ideas the same way, or come up with the same premise, or explore the same themes. but i definitely understand being discouraged by the PM announcements
