Third person present is so FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! There’s something so active about it and it really works at placing the reader right there with the character 2:17

i LOVE present tense- i always find myself writing in first person present tense no matter how i start a project. and i feel like this ties in really well with your short on indulgent writing! also, the new writing space is so cute

Yes, same! It has the most sense of immersion and immediacy imo. Like why ~wouldn't~ you write in first person present tense most of the time? Lol

hearing that it can take you a week to finish drafting 1 chapter gives me so much comfort bc as a new-ish writer, i used to think i have to always rush through first drafts, because it's common advice. btw love your new desk setup & your keyboard! excited to hear more about the floating house 🧡

Omg I loved this vlog so much also I am so obsessed with clemmie. YOUR NEW DESKTOP IS TO DIE FOR. Okay I kinda love third person but everything I've written has been first-person, especially short fiction! I had no idea there were random sites that could change the tense for you.. I also would not trust i... it's even just like uploading your manuscript to a random site. Forget AI.. like I think that stuff can be leaked too HAHA okay maybe I'll see you in nyccccc hehehe

This was what I needed to finally refresh my space ! I've also realized that my current project is leaning towards gothic and started to really lean into it.

I have a difficult time writing in 1st person. I am constantly messing up the tense. But I admire you for trying.

Changing tenses like that halfway through the book is actually so crazy. There's a part of me that thinks that if it were me, I would've just taken the L and and kept it in past. But then like, if you're spending all this time working on your book, there's no point in skimping out on things out of laziness, because once it's out there, it's out there, and you can't (really) change it at that point. So, it's best to get into the weeds of things and change it to what you want while you can, rather than regretting it later.
Actually, you're probably better than me. I could see myself writing the whole thing in past tense out of stubbornness, reading it, getting upset, sighing and having to essentially rewrite the whole book again in present. Haha
(Also, love your new desk setup, btw. Absolute goals.)

I love present tense, but I’m also a screenwriter and scripts have to be in present tense all the time. My PhD dissertation novel (that I’m querying) is third person past tense, but my current WIP (YA horror) is third person present tense. I write most of my fiction (short stories, novels) in present tense, but will also occasionally write past tense. I definitely prefer present, though!
    I love Clemmie! She’s adorable! 😻
And your desk setup is amazing! Wow! Love the stuffed animals! 😍

this is definitely what i needed 🥰 ur kitty is so cute , i’ve recently just started my first draft for my project ‘i fell in love with your ghost’ the vibes of ur project ‘the floating house’ sounds perfect for October and spooky szn, usually i write in 3rd person past tense but for this project in particular i had the intention of writing in 3rd person but when i wrote the first sentence it was kind of like the mc was just like, step a side let me tell my story lol

No doubt you're aware of Lynn D. Jung's recent compliment to you about your perception of craft when you're working, Kris, and I'd like to echo the sentiment right off the bat because you experimented with something very specific (the verb tense) with the fear it might not work ... but the courage to try it anyway. You've demonstrated in the way you discuss this that you know how hard it is once you're already midway through a drafting process.
As storytelling evolves, I'm noticing more writers are becoming aware of how family as a concept needs to change. Toxic siblings are rooted 99 times out of 100 in toxic childrearing methods, where obligation to the "family unit" creates unhealthy competition. The found-family trope is becoming popular because an obligation you're born into is a cycle that needs to be broken.
Three cheers for having your screen further away from your face. :)
Weirdly I'm glad you feel the way you do about the religion in your book, because it's a good problem to have. An unwritten rule about faith as a concept is that faith needs to be tested. So your frustrations as the author in getting that piece of the plot right (i.e. the details feel scattered) can be applied to the frustrations of your characters in living it.
A toast to degree of separation. I'm the same way with constantly using a female MC, and at the risk of opening a can of worms here, it's because as a guy I'm sick of other guys being "the hero" in a dumbass entitled way. When it's a girl I empathize more in writing her, seeing the set of problems she faces and building a sense of respect for WHY she steps up to the plate as a hero.
The choice between novels, a mostly solitary activity, and plays, a collaborative art form, has been the double-edged sword that keeps stabbing me. Burnout happens much quicker on a novel because you aren't being supported and stimulated by the collaborative environment. On the other hand, though, ground dynamics in theatre are at the mercy of egos and politics you don't face when you're in solitude. So even now ... to be very, very honest ... I'm torn with how my time is being utilized.
Have fun in New York, Kris.

23:53 I was tired all the time for like 2 years there -- it turns out, I had hypothyroidism! It's not normal to be tired all the time apparently... so please make sure to check-in with doctors and such if you notice your energy levels are always lower than you think they should be 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
