ULTIMATE Guide to START or UPGRADE your SMART HOME
You said you at about 12:00 that Nanit didn't have any subscription costs. Did you mean to say the Owlet doesn't have a subscription cost?
great video! i am trying to figure out how to automatically turn off the fireplace 20 mins after it was turned on without a voice command/ without setting a timer in the app. Any idea? Thanks
@@kZod I use Home Assistant for a lot of my automations. You could do “when” fireplace is on for 20 minutes, “then” turn off fireplace.

you should look into upgrading your recording microphone. your current mic peaks while you are just talking. a better microphone which could be as simple as a rode wireless mic set would 100% improve the quality.
Thanks for the feedback. I actually just got my new microphone in the day after posting this video
@@IntelliHomes nice! make sure you do some tests to make sure the audio stays consists. a limiter would help also.
alright leonardo dicaprio
Thank you
I also use a self-monitored self-installed system. One problem I've had is that I don't always immediately notice notifications on my phone when I am away from home. Even a few times that my alarm has accidentally been triggered, I didn't always notice the notification on my phone. (I use Ring, so it may be different than Eufy and Arlo.) At the core of the problem, to me, is that there are so many notifications for everything hitting my phone that it is hard to clearly distinguish the emergency ones and the ones that aren't really anything. (I use an iPhone, and it may be that I need to work on my own settings here.) Have you found the notifications you get to be easy to recognize, even when you're busy with something like driving or at work?
Looking forward to your next video. Would like to find out the best video doorbell. Especially if it is 'non - subscription'.
@@mgpauly6888 that’s part of it!
I very much like your content. I have electric baseboard heating in our house and I have installed some Mysa smart thermostats. I am using SmartThings for my hub. Have you heard of any issues with Mysa and or SmartThings? I have added 3 Mysa's and have had no issues. Now I added a fourth and it connected with SmartThings, but I cannot control it. Also it does not show either temp or humidity like the 3 previous ones do. I have a ticket in with SmartThings and am waiting to hear back from them.
If you have a wall switch to turn the fireplace on or off, could you just replace that wall switch with Smart switch. Because right now, if you turn your wall switch off, you could not use the smart plug anyway.
@@mgpauly6888 mine still works even if the switch is off. Depends how it was wired. In my research of setting one up myself, everything I found said a wall switch would not work. Had to do with something on neutral wires and the way the fireplace is triggered to turn on. I should try it though.
I like your valuable content &would like to talk about the getting low views problem. Pls know me
Consider adding RATGDO to your MyQ. That was the direction I went and am EXTREMELY happy with it. And it gives you more functionality than the original integration.
Carbon MONOXIDE sensors and detectors are way more important than CO2 detectors, especially if your home uses gas in, for example, a water heater, furnace, or cooking appliances. Need one in every bedroom and on each floor. Personally would not be too concerned with CO2 levels.
Well this is awkward. You would think with all the prep that goes into this, I would've caught that. Thank you
Good info!
Thought for sure the owlet was the best option but the eufy looks great as well. The camera and sock bundle are 240 dollars. The camera has 360 degree rotation and tilt and ai motion tracking functionality. It also boasts a 4k camera with 8x zoom. Thanks for putting that great product on my BM list!!
Great sharing.
THANK YOU FOR THIS REVIEW!!! We have 8 kids. Always thought monitors were for paranoid first timers… but now lookin because our almost 7 year old has epilepsy and stopped breathing in her sleep during a seizure. Had it not been for big sis, she could be dead. We currently have her sleeping with us so we wake up at every little change (we’re a bit on edge) in her. So many options, and the only one we know much about is the owlet! Trying to do the best thing for our baby girl! We love our kids… but mostly we love them ALIVE. ❤
You’re welcome. I would consider the Nanit. The Nanit comes with cloth bans with Velcro. In theory you could actually Velcro 2 of them together to make a bigger band to wrap around your child. I will say the Nanit also is only “supposed” to go up to 24 months, but one band fits around my 3 1/2 year old. Also talk to your Pediatrician about Owlet. There is a medical one, I’m not sure if it’s any different. I wish you the best.
Update: We got the eufy smart sock and the socks that came with it were too small. Cut a hole in a sock I knew was pretty tight on my kids, and it works like a charm! I cut the hole small enough it was a struggle to put the sensor in the hole. Just have to look up age appropriate heart rates and SpO2 levels for the age group and adjust the sensitivity accordingly. Side benefit: we get a verbal confirmation the sock has been removed when she gets up, so we also know when she’s up in the morning.
You do not need a second AND in Automation 2 at the timeline of 3:15. It is already an AND and does not need the second AND operator. Thanks for the video.
What happens when you open a door with a sensor that turns on the light...walk into the room...and close the door?
Great question! I am going to make a video this week on how to do this when setting up automations. I also talk about it in this videoth-cam.com/video/-LG_QySCHi0/w-d-xo.html Basically you create two automations. Automation 1 is, door open or motion sensor detects motion, light turns on. Automation 2, door closed AND motion sensor does not detect motion for "x" amount of time, light turns off. If you don't have a motion sensor in that room then you just don't create automation 2. You would have one that turns on the light when the contact sensor (door) opens and nothing when it closes. You could set a delay on the contact sensor as well. Let's say the sensor is closed for 5 minutes THEN turn off the light. This might get annoying though since it could trigger when you are still in the room. I planned to walk through this exact automation in a video this week!
@@IntelliHomes Yeah, I was thinking you could fix it with a motion detector...but if you are using one of those, why use a door sensor. I'm not going to use door sensors. They look like a DIY add-on and I want the seamless look.
In some places they make sense. I have a pantry and it makes sense to have the light turn on when it opens, and the light turn off when it closes. Another place it does make sense for me is the door from my house to garage. Unless I wanted 3 or even 4 motion sensors in my garage. I can put a contact sensor on the door so the light turns on when I go in the garage and the light stays on through motion. I know what you mean though, in some cases it just doesn't make sense.
You could set up an automation (going to the bathroom is a great example) that when the sensor detects motion, the sensor turns on the light. You then close the door and do you thing. If the sensor stops detecting no motion, the lights will stay on because the door is closed. When you are done doing your thing, you open the door and leave. When the motion detector does not detect any motion for a certain amount of time the lights will turn off.

Hey, your contents are great and keep the good job. The viewers will come!
Thank you! Glad to hear you like it!
i'm opting for light bulbs at the moment because since i'm renting its gonna be a hassle to install and uninstall switches when i'm moving out 🥲
Another bonus tip: never buy a router that can only be managed with a phone app! This obnoxious trend of app only control can make it extremely tedious trying to manage a smart home network.
I love your videos and the idea of smart home . I have one issue that i really think you have an answer that i don't know . I bought about 20 smart items (bulbs, switches, etc) my problem is that if i want to change different wifi company or even change the wifi i will have to reset 20 items one by one which is Very annoying. Am i doing something wrong ? Or is it because i buy from different companies (some i bought from ali expess )? I want a selution where i change one and hopa all changed automatically. Thanks
Thank you! For restarting your devices, are you referring to the WiFi Router? All your devices should be connected to your router. If you change WiFi routers than yes, you have to reconnect all the devices to the network. Yes, this can be very tedious. You shouldn't be changing WiFi Routers very often though. I am actually working on a video around WiFi Routers right now that will release Saturday. Does that answer your question?
I do both! Every smart bulb is controlled by a smart switch. No need for apps to control functionality.
What switch/bulb setup are you running?
Thank you for bringing it back to basics although you've a lot of knowledge. Appreciate you 😊
Privacy & Security should be paramount. It amazes me how TH-camrs who lean towards Alexa and Google are so cavalier about how these two products process our private data in the cloud. Completely local is worth the extra cost. The Alexa and Google business models both profit through data mining our data.
I believe privacy and security should be. I run all my devices through Home Assistant before being sent back to Alexa. What I really like about Home Assistant is there is an option to run Local Tuya, so instead of my devices bouncing off the cloud. They are only hitting my Home Assistant hub instead my home network. I still think there is a long way to go to help enhance privacy and security.
Yet they be charging thousands of dollars just for the phone
Right?
Can you use both Alexa and Siri with the same devices?
Generally yes. There are a lot of devices that work with Alexa, but not HomeKit (Siri). You’d have to set up the devices on both platforms.
I use smart switches to control smart bulbs
Tried the presence sensor on my Echo 4 and it failed miserably. Kept turning off the lights even though someone was in the room. As for lights and switches? I was using LifX (garbage), then switched to Philips Hue and Lutron switches to control them and have recently started to go with Wiz bulbs (both Hue and Wiz work beautifully, but Wiz doesn't require a bridge)
I have struggled with Hue due to price. Oddly enough, I have actually enjoyed Tuya products. I do run Home Assistant though and I have set it up with Local Tuya to remove cloud connection. When I press give a voice command or use the app it happens as quickly as if I press the physical button. I am still working on the Presence Sensor, I have one and have found flaws in it. It definitely works better in large open areas. Otherwise you need multiple and at $80/ea, it gets to be a lot. I have seen them on sale for $65.
I am just getting into creating a smart home and I want to go along on this journey but there is no button to subscribe. Also, I am interested in the new matter over thread technology so hopefully, in time, you can create some content using those features.
Would like to see what ecosystem it works with and your thoughts on pros & cons.
I am getting ready to make a video about this since I have had time now to test it
Good basic instructions. Just what a newbie, like me, needs. I will subscribe. Thanks
