FASTER for Atari STE - WIP 13 Oct 2024
มุมมอง 1.4K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Latest WIP of FASTER, a new racing game for the Atari STE. Video is from real 1 meg 8 MHz STE, and showcases recently added full soundtrack from scene musician Dma-sc, along with overhaul of samples sound effects (still in progress) courtesy of Junosix, with whom I collaborated on Lotus STE. Work ongoing to refine vehicle handling model, polish frontend interface and fix bugs. Still aiming for ...
Atari STE FASTER (formerly "50fps racer") - WIP 7 Oct 2024
มุมมอง 2.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the latest progress on my new racing game, to be released as a free download in early December 2024. I now have the final version of the in-game music from musician Dma-sc! Also, there's lots of optimisation work going on - most low-level routines have been rewritten in 68k and performance is holding up quite well even with 5 cars on screen.

See my Twitter/X profile at x.com/RetroRacing for regular updates/insights. Latest build of FASTER (formerly "50fps racer"), a new racing game for 1 Meg Atari STE to be released in December 2024 as a free download. Note the new smoothly scaling lampposts and the increased number of zoom levels on scenery (particularly lampposts). Speedometer code has been rebuilt to use less CPU/Blitter time, r...
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 19 Sep 2024 (longplay)
มุมมอง 1.9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
A longer video than the usual bitesize clips showing a full game from beginning to end. You'll should to get a feel for the way the game difficulty progresses over time, and also view the rather lovely 24 hour day/night transition. Also check out the new tapered sky gradient (thanks to Defence Force for the idea!). Tons of performance work is currently ongoing to reduce the number of frame drop...

Watch me play like a pro with a real joystick on a real STE. 🕹️💪 Recent changes include: drop shadows under trackside scenery, speedo added in, fixing of some graphical glitches, and hud tidied up and mostly functional. Optimisation work ongoing!
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 13 Sep 2024
มุมมอง 6203 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a 50fps racer for the Atari STE that I'm currently working on. Hoping to release as a free download in December 2024. Latest news: speedo code now optimised resulting fewer frame drops. New "time extend" banner when passing checkpoint. Hud tidied up and high score synchs with main score. Next stop: optimise the stars code (currently written in C!). Getting there one step at a time! 💥
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 9 Sep 2024
มุมมอง 1.1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Check out the newly added speedometer, which looks rather nice IMO but needs a ton of optimisation as it's causing a lot of visible frame drops in this video. Game now runs on 1 meg machines again after a ton of recent work to reduce the code size. 🎉 🚗🚗
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 03 September 2024 (real hardware)
มุมมอง 7763 หลายเดือนก่อน
Latest build of this in-progress racing game for the stock Atari STE, running on my very own Atari STE! A few issues with the new stars display code, but otherwise looking and sounding great!
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 1 Sep 2024
มุมมอง 2.8K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Latest progress on this 50fps racer for the Atari STe. A new scrolling star background has been implemented to liven up the nighttime racing. If you're feeling impatient, skip to 0:30 to see the stars come out!
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 29 Aug 2024
มุมมอง 1.2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Latest progress on this 50fps racer for the Atari STE. I've been optimising hard in order to free up enough CPU time to allow for 4 on-screen opponent cars and a YM chiptune without too many frames dropped. Aiming for a December 2024 release of the finished game.
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 15 June
มุมมอง 1.7K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Latest changes to this WIP game for the Atari STE. Refined the car shape (courtesy of great sprite work by Scott Elkington) and added drop shadows. New intermediate animation frames for car steering. Looking more console-like by the day!
Atari STE 50fps racer - WIP 10 June (real hardware)

Another WIP video of my upcoming racing game loosely based upon WEC LE Mans. This time from real hardware rather than emulation - a stock 8MHz STE with 1 meg of memory.

A TH-cam update for those that don't follow me on Twitter. - Track now has 3 checkpoints that add time to the counter. - Digital sound effects being added alongside digital engine sound (thanks Junosix & Masteries!) - Difficulty increases as race progresses. Hopefully coming soon: stars at night! 🌙🌃

th-cam.com/video/9a-U8bb7UqU/w-d-xo.html - - the STE engine is now running at 50Hz, isn't it .. would it be possible to add terrain undulations as well, although maybe the speed would drop to 25Hz ?
Yes, I suspect undulation could be added, but as you say, the framerate would likely need to be reduced to 25fps. That's not something that personally interests me as the primary purpose of this game is to run at 50fps. :)
@@gridleaderretro thanks !
WOW this looks great!
Congrats on making it to the release, finishing is a real skill! It's a stunning game!
Thank you!
@gridleaderretro Can you confirm if the game has an ending?
I can confirm that there is no ending to the game :)
@@gridleaderretro Ahh that's actually (for me) a shame. I speedrun a lot of ST stuff and would've loved a way to mix this in. Either way, from an og ST owner, two thumbs up for this amazing work!
It's like Pole Position and Virtua Racing had a baby. lol :P
Excellent work! 🗻
Thank you for offering this amazing game !!! I can't wait to look at its source code :)
Just a word of warning ... the source code isn't very pretty :)
@@gridleaderretro From what I can see in your github repositories, I shall eventually be able to decipher the sources ;)
@@SaturnCafeAlpha Source code is now available at github.com/jonathanopalise/le-mans-minigame
@@gridleaderretro Thank you very much !
AMAZING!!
Good lord this is impressive on this hardware. The art is also done exceptionally well and the animation looks solid. Outstanding work. Atari should give this man a job 😊
Thanks - appreciate your kind words!
Great sense of speed 👍
i still say a great version of hang-on defo
Will it work on retroarch emulator or do i have to get my STe out the loft?
No idea, but you should get your STe out of the loft anyway :)
Amazing work, it looks great and plays really well. I saw a comment on an older video that mentioned the road movements being "faked" what does that mean exactly?
Todo un Out Run que grandes recuerdos de la maquina arcade, precioso sonido hermosa musica
Incredible sense of speed ! Congratulations !
Ripoff of weclemans
It's Xmas before time, thank you so much for bringing us this great game!
Another masterclass from mr chicane! Technically it's perfect, and what's more... it's fun! Arcade at home, bravo! :)
Best x-mas/yule-gift so far!
So So So Good! Extremely good! So playable and enjoyable. Motor sound is incredible as well as the music.
So smooth, congrats! And thanks a lot for sharing
Looking forward to trying it on real hardware over the Xmas holidays
Fantastic work, really shows the STE and your programming prowess off.
Congratulations !
any hills? peaks or dips? very flat looking atm
"Only Atari ST makes this possible"
Atari STe .. different machine 😀
@@graviousI copied that phrase from the video.
Congrats on this great achievement! It's not easy shipping a complete, done product and it transcends mere technical prowess!
Magnifique.
Well done JT
Awesome video
I do not doubt that if this game had been released at the height of the Atari ST, you would have made a lot of money. Congratulations on completing the project!
Congrats on finishing the project!
Really nice looking game.
Incredible job... I've tried it on an STE computer and works like a charm. Been playing it for some good 50 minutes. It's very nice and makes you feel your computer is super powerful (the STE actually is!). I think it needs some fine tuning with the controls (used a 7800 gamepad), would appreciate the posibility of turning the music volume down and, given the time and budget, could turn into an incredible piece of software for which I'd gladly pay. Do you have any plans of developing the game further or will you look into different projects? Anyway, amazing job and congrats for the achievement!! Really looking forward to your next creation!!
Amazing job, it's beautifull, fast and extremely addictive, THANKS
Congrats Jonathan, I told you! 1st place, of course! I will download it right now. Thank you man.
You were indeed correct! Hope you enjoy playing the game!
I just tried the game and it's awesome, very playable and feels extremely smooth (which was one of the main goals i guess). I played the game on an emulator. I have an Atari ST but not an STE. I'll try in on the real hardware as soon as possible. Thumbs up!
Thanks for your feedback! I'm reassured that you consider it to be playable as I'm more of a graphics programmer than a game programmer!
Whoop! Congratulations, richly deserved!! 🎉🙌An amazing achievement and incredible showcase of the power of the STE to boot. Such a shame we never got to experience games like this back in the early 90's. Can't wait to play it on STE hardware. I may even make a wec-le mans style game box so I can display alongside other ST classics, which this undoubtedly is 👏
Thanks Jez! Can't wait to see the box if you end up making it!
A really arcade feeling on STe. Thanks.
Thank you! I'm pleased that it's recreating an arcade feeling as that's exactly what I was trying to accomplish!
That is crazy fast!
Thank you! That's one of the reasons why I wanted 50 frames per second - to have this sensation of speed but for it to still be playable :)
An awesome showcase of Atari STe power.
Thanks - hopefully more people will be inspired to make games for the STE now!
Vous êtes un magicien. Bravo encore pour cette réalisation. J’ai’hâte de voir vos futurs projets.
Thank you for your kind words!

Awesome work.
Thank you!
Is this available for download? I've currently set up my STE once again (setting up the c't IDE interface I did a layout for a few years ago) and would love to give it a try. EDIT: Just read your post on Atari-Forum ... let's hope my HDD is done formating til the 9th ^^
Release will be available very soon. Perhaps even a bit before 9th December :)
@@gridleaderretro Just gave it a spin - runs nice off my messy STE with HDD and posted a picture on itch.
Looks like variation on WEC Le Mans :)
Yep, very much inspired by WEC Le Mans :)
