I'm looking for the perfect e-ink note tablet for me.
I'll be using it primarily for writing my scripts and notes for my other TH-cam channel, Hello From Hawaii. There are so many to choose from and it can be overwhelming at times. I thought I'd bring people on the journey as I figure out which one is the best for my workflow.

7 Observations After 7 Days with the Supernote A5X2 Manta
After using the Supernote A5X2 Manta for a week, I wanted to talk about things that I've noticed about the device. It's a great device, but there are several areas of concern that have come up, especially as a long-time Supernote A6X user. Maybe others can relate if they also have both devices. I'm just hoping that people find this discussion helpful in their purchasing decision. Of course, as time goes on and I use the Manta more, my opinions are subject to change.
Disclaimer - Ratta sent me the Supernote A5X2 Manta for review. However, I've been a long-time Supernote user and purchased the A6X back in 2021 and have been using it ever since.

I recently got the Supernote A5X2 for review. I honestly never thought I'd post another video on this channel since I've been happy with my A6X and I felt like there wasn't much else to say. However, I decided to dive into the Manta (pun intended) because I thought I could help people make a better decision on whether to buy it. This video isn't a review or unboxing. Instead, this video provide...
Supernote A6X - One Year Later

This is a one year review of the Supernote A6X. Is it worth it? I wanted to share my experience of the Supernote A6X a year or so after purchasing and using it. I think it's still great. I still use it for taking notes and writing scripts for my main TH-cam channel. I like the writing experience and continue to use the device. This will probably be the final video on this channel, but I just wa...
Supernote A6X - Has It Replaced My Notebook? (3 Months Later Review)
มุมมอง 15K2 ปีที่แล้ว
So after using the Supernote A6X for three months, has it replaced my notebooks? Well, yes. I've been using the Supernote A6X primarily for script writing and note taking for my main TH-cam channel, Hello From Hawaii, and it's been the perfect device for what I was looking for. I wasn't interested in an e-reader or PDF reader. I wanted something that I could keep my notes in and use for writing...

Why I Bought the Supernote A6X vs. the ReMarkable 2, Papyr, Boox, and Mobiscribe devices

What I'm Looking For in an E-Ink Notebook
I have several Lamy fountain pens including a clear one (they're called 'demonstrators' because they demonstrate the innards including the ink). They're one of the best fountain pens you can get for the money. Nice review. My A5X2 Manta is on order. Looking forward to it.
The LAMY pen has been great. Much better than I expected and I'm glad Ratta sent me one to try. Hope you enjoy your Manta when it arrives.
The calendar is a really good start, but they’ve got a long way to go to replace My Daily Organizer or any of a bunch of other templated planners.
The calendar is nice. I think that you can create notes on the calendar by month, week, or day.
@ You can’t write on the daily pages - which is a significant fail in my book.
I use college rule on the Nomad (and both reMarkables) - I couldn’t imagine using anything bigger…
That's really effin weird. College ruled and wide ruled are supposed to be specific measurements. College is supposed to be about 7.1mm between lines. Wide ruled about 8.7mm. And that should always be the case no matter what paper, notebook or e-reader you use. There shouldn't be a difference.
I believe the templates scale and aren't set to a standard width.
Really good considerations all around. Very valuable. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi. Waiting for my Manta and never used Supernote or e-ink. So, this is just a guess based on other videos, but regarding your "ghosting" point (which is probably better phrased as "lag" to differentiate it from the ghost images left before an e-ink screen refreshes) this sounds a lot like the little bit of lag you get from having No Load Shutdown enabled as described in this video. (th-cam.com/video/R6xqVeZVJIw/w-d-xo.html) Probably still worth it from a battery savings perspective but something to be aware of.
Thanks for the comment. "Lag" is probably the better term. Again, not a big issue for me on the A6X and something I haven't experienced on the Manta.
Thanks for the great info! Very informative for someone like me who is trying to decide which device to purchase. 👍
I'm happy to hear that the video helped you. Good luck choosing!
Ive got a kindle scribe and now the manta and i guess b/c ive been lugging around the scribe the manta is SO MUCH more portable for me. It is extremely lightweight and even fits in my smallest bag. For my use case: im glad i didnt ever get a nomad b/c i need the extra screen real estate
Glad it worked out for you. I also thought about getting the Kindle Scribe since I read a lot, but I'm happy with my current Kindle and decided to keep the notetaking device separate.
@@paperless3739That's fair. I am thinking of buying a device to have for an all in one note taker, calendar, and e reader. Would supernote Manta or nomad be okay for this. I'm fine reading with a light. I just have not seen that much about how well supernote performs as a dedicated e eReader specifically for epubs.
Very interesting insights. If I were you, I'd definitely keep both, but I'd simply forget about the whole syncing problem and associated issues. Each tablet has its best use case, with the Nomad clearly being the winner in portability. But personally, I find it very difficult to read and edit PDFs on the Nomad, which is something I have to do daily. My Manta hasn't arrived yet, but I'm sure that reading and editing on the larger screen will be a welcome relief. Why not just transfer your files onto a thumb drive and go from there instead of syncing? That way, you could focus on the content rather than the line spacing etc.
Thank you for the comment. For reviewing PDFs, I could see how the A5 size would be much better. However, that's not something I do, as I just use the Supernote devices for writing. In terms of transferring files manually, I won't be able to do that because my A6X is an older generation and isn't like the Nomad where you can open it up.
@@paperless3739 Interesting. Doesn't your older A6X allow you to attach a USB-C thumb drive? I ALWAYS keep all my important files on an external thumb drive because I have to work with a lot of confidential files. I tried the Boox GO as well, but was unable to transfer those files onto the thumb drive, even though the drive itself was recognized by the system. My A6X2 is marvelous in that it recognizes the external drive and file transfers happen in the blink of an eye.
I am not in an American college, so I don’t know what is college rule ? Is ‘wide rule’ where the lines go from the left edge of the screen all the way to the right edge of the screen ? At the moment, the Manta is a very hot item, so you people who decide it is the wrong size for them will have no trouble selling it, they may even make a profit ! At the moment, the hard part for us people down under is getting our hands on a Manta. When they finally became available, they sold within the hour. Eventually, we were able to place a pre-order but the distributor is saying they don’t expect new stock until the middle of January or later in January. I see the American website is also taking pre-orders, but the website says you should expect 30-40 business days. The Samurai Heart of Metal pen is also sold out on the American website if you want to buy it separately. Cheers from down under.
Both have the horizontal lines from left to right. Wide rule is about 8.7mm between the lines. College rule is 7.1mm between lines , so they are narrower.
College rule is lined paper that is slightly thinner than wide rule. It's popular in school. Also called folder paper when I was younger. It also has a vertical line that goes down the left side of the page that creates a margin. I'm sure people can resell the item since it's new. It's really too bad there aren't more places to purchase them in-person. People could try them out and then decide to buy. Hope the Manta gets back in stock for you folks in Australia.
count of a Hilory paper binder page.34 lines. So find a template that matches 34 lines and put it on both. See how it goes. match the paper to the lines to number lines to the device size.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check for a comparable template and try it.
how is the writing experience, the nomad had lag when writing, you could try to trick it by doing a calibration based on your writing style but when i used a boox go or paper pro, those devices do a way better job, does manta have that same lag?
I haven't experienced any lag with the Manta. It's been great.
yes the points you have made are dead on, no one really brings up the syncing issues between these devices and because of it I am sticking with RM2 and RM paper pro, I refer to PDFs not syncing the calendar does sync and I get note conflict all the time so double notes and no fun cleaning that up when it happens, hopefully RM will put out a smaller version like the nomad
I can't speak to the Remarkable tablets, but I'm assuming the scaling issue will apply to most devices. There might not be a way around it so I'll have to figure something out.
I think the ability to see more at a glance might trump portability if used for mindmapping.
True. The extra display space would help.
It's odd to me that the rule would be scaled. I'd want it to be universal. Isn't it universal with the different sizes of real paper?
I'm not sure how they could get around this since the sizes are so different. I'll have to experiment with other templates to see if the scaling is better.
You don’t need to apologize! I’m a person who has been considering both sizes. This was incredibly helpful and I’m going to get the A6X2. I was on the fence anyway because I used to carry around A6 notebooks as a bullet journal, and I really want to replace that experience with an e-ink tablet. So, thank you!
I'm glad you put thought into the purchase. The A5 size is nice, but the A6 size is more portable. For me and what I do, I want to bring the tablet with me as much as possible. That gives the A6 size the edge. I will say, though, the Manta is slick and a great device.
The Nomad is roughly the same size as an A6 page. The Manta is closer to B5 or Composition notebook size (my favorite size for writing). If you are sharing between, page templates are fixed in size, right? So it makes sense if they shrink or grow between the devices. Do you have the option to not have them expand or contract? Independently, each device should have their own templates where wide-ruled on each is identical in spacing. And the same for college-ruled.
Interesting perspective on size preferences by the way. But I also think Lamy pens are gorgeous, so … :)
Thanks for the comment. I didn't think there's a way to not have the templates scale up or down. I may look at other templates that play nice with both sizes. If I can't find one, I may decide to not sync the content.
Greetings from Poland
Aloha from Hawaii 🤙
It’s the same scaling issue if you move between handwriting on an iPad 12.9 and an iPad Mini. My workaround is to use the College Rule on both devices and write in Landscape mode on the smaller device. That way it scales fine.
Great suggestion and I'll give it a try. Thank you.
@@esthereley6808 I don't use the College rule as the rows are a bit too wide for me. I'm trying different lined templates and compare between the two devices.
I've noticed the same thing about the templates. I used a 6mm and 7mm lined templates in my nomad to fit more writing in, and I've had to re-scale and resize the templates to the resolution for Manta (1920 x 2560). In terms of syncing the documents, I think some of my files I will create them in Nomad and others in Manta and synchronise them. I have quite a few pens and I absolutely love the new Lamy Safari Vista pen and I swap around with the HOM2 pen.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the scaling issue. Again, it's not a problem, but something I didn't anticipate.
Which pen do you prefer. I have the HoM2 coming but thought about purchasing the Vista then returning whichever I didn't prefer, but spending that money may lead to divorce, so we'll see.
@@paperless3739 I think it's because of the size of the screen being bigger. The A5X templates may not work either. Some people in Reddit had shared their templates.
@@t0dd000 I actually like it both so I switch it around on my desk 😅. I also have Staedtler Noris Jumbo and tested the Lamy EMR wacom tips - with this I prefer the PC/EL not the POM tip.
@@paperless3739 I've just set up the 2025 Jan template on Manta using the 5mm lined template and the space is about the same as the 7mm one I used on Nomad. For Manta, I think I will use the 5mm or 6mm lined templates. I prefer to keep my writing in a similar size and not write too big because it's on A5X2.
Nice 🎉 thnks for the re-upload ;)
Yeah, I didn't realize the issue with the older video because the issue was in the second half of the video. Something I have to make sure I check in the future.
Sorry that there were rendering issues the first time I uploaded this video. Made the corrections and reuploaded. Thanks to all of those who originally commented on that first video. 🤙
Make more videos! They are great 🎉
If you've watched this video, I hope you found the discussion valuable. Like I mentioned, more videos about the Manta to come with more of a focus on my actual use case in the long-term. Other channels do a much better job breaking down all the features and details. For me, I just want to share how I use it and how it fits into my workflow in writing and notetaking.
Oh damn i should have read the title more closely.
More videos to come 🤙
The Fugu would be a great idea for a palm reader and side loader or like pocket calculator or something 👀 I'd probably use it for character sheet reference notes or game actions like in a dnd campaign. That's a great idea though and I am onboard with the Supernote. I am waiting to get my military discount to check out the A5X2 Manta myself :) I got the A5 size because the planner that I am getting for 2025 is in the same size but I did want the Nomad size but I am gonna try to embrace new things as a writer as well.
A handheld would be a great size. And yes, a fugu model with little bumps on the back of the device would be great. I'm glad I got the A6X, as the size made the device portable and I was able to use it more because I took it with me a lot. With the A5 size, I'm not so sure about the portability, but the features are great.
I like you videos. I saw them about one year and a half and them really convince me and prove me the philosophy of Ratta products. Then I spent until now to get the new A5X2. Yes, I have been one of the guys waiting, almost every day,...but in my case I have to say taht I really like to wait for things when I am convinced and I like thise moments of anticipation...you know, I like better the days before the vacation time then the vacation itself... Keep with the way you show how you use the Supernote, because I learn a lot. Thamk you
Thanks for the comment and glad the videos helped back then. There's something intrinsically rewarding when you wait for something.
Thank you sir, and greetings from Florida. I currently own the Kindle Scribe (2022 release and now with newest software update), and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, and I use these devices for reading and note taking. I never owned a Supernote, but they look awesome, and especially the Manta! I personally prefer the larger screens, so I know I would love the Manta, but I cannot justify buying it because I certainly do not NEED it, but I sure as heck would WANT it, lol. I was wondering if the Manta has split-screen capability, where you can open an e-book on one side and a notebook on the other? That is something I make great use of on the Galaxy Tab, but would love that in a larger e-ink device, like the Manta. If you are able to reply to this, I would appreciate it, and if not, no worries. Either way, hope you have a great weekend, and hope you have great satisfaction and joy with the Manta! 👍
Thanks for the question. I'll have to check, as I don't have e-books on my device. Offhand, I don't think it can do that. It might be a feature for a future update, though. There may also be workarounds to get it to split screen with PDF and a note page. Overall, the Manta and A6X are great devices. For your case, maybe the Samsung tablet for the PDF and Supernote for the note taking.
@ Thank you for getting back to me, it is greatly appreciated!
I've just got my Supernote nomad A6X2 three weeks go and I really like it. The pressure of HOM2 pen on the Feel Write 2 screen is actually pleasant for me. I don't use the wifi on all the time so I also sync when required.
Everyone wants the size between the A6x & the A5x😂
Thanks so much, Chris! This video is still helpful 2 years down the line. I'm expecting my Supernote in May of 2024, and this is really helpful. I'll likely use it similarly to how you use it.
Interesting - as I wait for my A6X2, I (over the past 4 years) have found myself using my reMarkable more and more over time. I use it more than I use the computer that sits on my desk.
I’ve had my reMarkable for 4 years - I’m on my 3rd stylus tip (and you get 10 with the stylus - one in it and 9 spares on a card).
I think you can add an SD Card up to total of 2TB.
It may be mobile & handy but it looks to small. Thoughts?
I have a hack. I do a screen full of notes and then I select all of the text and shrink it down to 1/2 or 1/4 then I can get way more text on one page.
How do you do this? Do you use the lasso tool for this?
Yes. Because i think my A5X is too small. I love the device though.
Went for the Supernote for the same reason. The thought of never having to replace nibs was the defining feature. Also I wanted something compact to use as an e-reader. So I went for the A6 Nomad and I really love it. Not having a lit screen doesn't matter to me. I wanted a replacement for notebooks and books, and those don't have lit screens.
XD Now I imagined an alternative version of Pulpfiction where instead of a suitcase they would carry around a book.... And then open it up....
Any news on the new A5X 2? Waiting for the larger model.
am tired of these videos , they describe a new product and give first impresion view , for me after trying Super note for 3-5 months , its one of the worst ink pads you can use , its supper slow , the screen wont respond easly after few months of use , oh and pens are of worst Quality , you will have to replce it with very expensive replacemnt ( yes only from them ) , and no need to tell you about support , its te worst , they actually dont have any support.
Thank you! Think I am already decided on the A6 X2 but this just confimed it!
He never opened the book....
The size choice is killing me. I like how small it is, easy to put away, handy, but at the same time I’m not sure if it’s big enough. I mean, it’s probably not just me, but I tend to write bigger (the letters I mean) than when writing on real paper..or maybe lines would help?
Man, I have both scribe and Remarkable 2, Ive decided I will probably return both of them.:D
Onyx Note line-up has very decent Note-taking/drawing capabilities. It’s not an afterthought at all.
Talking head
It's great to hear all the pros and cons of the Supernote A6x but to be honest, this could have been a podcast instead of a video, or there could have been more visual information, FWIW.
please suggest E-ink for multipurpose like writing reading excel pdf whatsapp etc.. now a days we need multifunction device in single click
Storage space. Exactly the thing that's caused me concern. I have used notebooks for years. I switched to a Samsung tablet and it's fine; it's not paper at all, but fine. I've been looking at these because of the more paperlike experience. But then I got worried about storage. My Samsung has expandable, and I write daily. Maybe I'll wait a bit longer.
Lol, the kids in the background 😂 But be careful with the fan so it doesn’t fall on them
