My Dad's Avocado Trees Loaded with Fruit 🥑
You're reaching the stage of realizing how much maintenance goes into a grove. It's quite some work to pull out a tree from the ground, cut roots and preserve enough of it to move to a container. You'll probably do one on a weekend, realize how hard that is, maybe take a break the next weekend, and attempt another. I'd say give some more thought to how you'll get access to the Holiday because it does have a floppy pattern and you will be staking and pruning it routinely.
Thank you for your helpful advice and caution. With the amount of work involved, I might just cut down some trees instead of trying to save them. I might try to save them but I think you are right, it will be very labor intensive. Thank you for sharing your thought and advice and thank you for watching!
You must have strong legs! :) I think you are Blessed by all that you do have, especially remembering all their names!
Lol... thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
large beautiful backyard
Thank you. for your comment and thank you for watching!
thanks for sharing - it is always sad to cut down trees
Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
I think cutting down existing avocado trees is a shame, but for the sake of taking care of it so that the others grow well it's not a problem, thank you my friend.
Thank you for your comment my friend and thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing! I used to stress and hope a tree would do well but now I just plant them and if they don't do well I replace them with a different tree and or variety. It's seems to be the way of the avocado. Never look back.
That sounds like great advice, thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Unfortunately this means I have a lot of bad luck.
You're really lucky to have such a expansive backyard. Wish I had room for 1 grove let alone a 3nd grove lol. Good luck nursery the MG back to health.
Thank you my friend for your kind words and thank you for watching! Hope you have a great week!
my parent's Fuerte grew 15 ft tall , took 5 years to produce and finally when it did, has hundreds and hundreds of avocados right now. id prob chop one fuerte and bark graph multiple varieties.
Thank you for sharing, your comment gives me hope on my Fuerte. Thank you for your comment and advice and thank you for watching!
Hi Johnny, thanks for uploading these videos the past few days. Pruning is part of most grower's maintenance programs. Historically, most farmers were spacing their plantings about 15' x 15', maybe 15' by 12'. More recently with the dwarfish GEM, ( and now Luna, etc, maybe Lamb Hass) they got closer around 10' by 10' I believe. A huge part of the maintenance on pruning is specifically to allow sunlight to enter into the canopies of the trees. There was a Pruning workshop by the California Avocado Society last week in San Diego I wanted to go to but I couldn't. There are videos on TH-cam that should help a little bit but I have not found a definitive video. I've got the same challenge with root pruning but in my case, they have grown outside most of my 15-gallon pots and the roots are so big I'll have to cut the pots because the roots are too big coming out of the buckets. I know I'm looking at TRANSPLANT SCHOCK if I don't take all precautions possible, including cutting some, maybe 40% of the canopy growth of the tree in the pot. Instead of the nearly impossible task of taking your regular HASS tree out of the ground (because it grows so wide), I would nearly stump it and graft Lamb Hass onto, which should grow straighter vertically and not so wide thereby allowing more sun to penetrate. I'd research other vertically growing trees like Reed, maybe Bacon, and graft them onto that original Hass spreading trees after you stump it. The solution with the wide-spreading Fuerte probably lies in strategic pruning. Prune to take away the flopping branch. The tree should grow without sagging although have seen Fuertes with very low branches. If they are actually interfering now and in the future, you'll have to prune them off. Then open some of the canopy to allow light. Insofar as lack of production of the Fuerte - type B -avocado tree, although you have a lot of avocado A types in your orchard, I would still try to graft type A avocado varieties onto it, such as Reed or Pinkerton, for example. Pinkerton's should bear fruit around the same time as Fuertes' However, Fuertes are heavily alternate bearing in any case.Talk to a quality nursery and inquire if there are any bee-loving ornamentals you can plant near the Fuerte to bring in bees at flowering time. And, since you have so many avocado trees, you might definitely want to consider contacting a beekeeper/ association and see if they help plant bees out in your orchard during flowering time. The density of your orchard will continue to be challenge without a diligent pruning program. I'd research avocado farmers in San Diego or Riverside and see what Farm Labor thy might recommend who might be willing to come help you annually with proper avocado tree pruning which would be for increased production and reduced height. Those are my thoughts. Other comments may want to clarify.
Hi Neal, wow, thank you for sharing and thank you for all your helpful advice! You really know your stuff and I appreciate you sharing your experience with me. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching! Hope you are doing well!
I like this video.Thank you for sharing my friend.👍👍👍
Thank you my friend for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing your backyard. Love the mountainous slope and privacy!
Thank you for your kind words Rich and thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing Johnny, I too am looking to make changes. I have some that are not doing well, I think it is time to just move on. Replace it.
Thank you REM for your advice, I really should maybe think about getting rid of some especially if they are not good producers instead of trying to save them. Thanks for the recommendation and thank you for watching!
I aways worry when I leave on vacation, looks good!
Thank you my friend, I appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!
My Bacon is like yours, produces a ton of fruit every year!
Definitely my Bacon is one of my best producers so far. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for showing us Tokyo Johnny!

I love loquat "Chinese plum". I drive around looking for fruiting trees in public spaces to pick the fruit and enjoy every fruit from the different varieties 🍑

Your potted avocado looks amazing
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching! Hope all your trees are doing well during the summer!
Trees are looking good Johnny
Thank you so much for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Avo trees hate pots
Definitely agree with you there. They definitely love the ground better and they do much better in the ground then in containers. Thank you for comment and thank you for watching!
Your avocado grove is very impressive. I would imagine it's an adventure (and a treacherous one at that) to harvest your fruit from the hillside.
Thank you for your kind words and your comment. Thank you for watching!
GREAT AVOCADO TOUR & GROWING SUCCESSES, JOHNNY! 🥑🙌 Can’t remember, but are you on Instagram and/ or Facebook? If so, can you drop the link(s) here? Thanks, Charles :-)
Hi Charles, thank you for your comment and kind words and thank you for watching! I haven't really created a Facebook page and don't remember if I ever created an instagram page, if I ever create one, I will send you the links. Thank you Charles for your great channel and products and thank you for taking the time to watch my channel!
That Kona Sharwil you have at the top of the hill is surrounded by a giant oak trees so it’s growing vertically to try to capture more light. I’m sure you already knew this.
Thank you for your comment. I have a few trees growing vertically to capture the sun. I definitely could of planned the location of the trees a little better. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
I think that Fuerte trees are known for their sprawling, sideways growth so there may not be much you can do about that. I've heard many people say that their Kona Sharwil trees are not producing fruit right now and that's includes my tree. I planted my Sharwil tree in 2014 and it produced fruit that year but it hasn't since. But in the last two years it has really started to grow so hopefully it will start producing fruit soon.
Thank you for sharing about the Fuerte and Kona Sharwil. It is comforting to know I am not the only one having these issues with them. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
Nice video...! Thank you for sharing my friend.
Thank you my friend for your comment and thank you for watching!
The avocado gardens in the mountains are certainly very beautiful and are planted with various varieties of avocado, including Pinkerton and Bacon. I'm happy to see this video, thank you, my friend.
Thank you my friend for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Holy cow, I didn’t realize that you had so many avocado trees. It’s a jungle out there.
Definitely a jungle down there. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
Heard the Fuerte is the worst for production. Some people have Fuerte for years and still haven’t produced. Others have Fuerte within a few years.
They can be last year I got 1 this year its loaded
Thank you for sharing, nice to know, I am not the only one having production issues with the Fuertes. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Its nice to hear from you and hope you are doing well. That's great that your Fuerte is loaded this year, I heard Fuerte avocados are excellent! Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
How old is your oldest avocado , I’m located here north in the San Francisco Bay area, got a couple hass and fuerte but they are around 8 feet tall and like 5 years
Hi Jose, my trees range from about 7 years to much younger. Really impressed you are growing avocado trees in the Bay Area, very cool. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
In this video I see that avocado bacon has lots of fruit, this is very enjoyable, thank you my friend
Thank you my friend for your comment and thank you for watching!
Looking good! The heat wave has me a bit worried for the fruit drop on my Reeds, which by the way are at the same stage as yours. I just built a shade structure around the GEM because it's growing a little too fast and the branches are folding over and are too exposed. The root stock seed you used is great and the trunk is getting big for it's age. Keep the updates coming, your trees are looking great!
Hi Ivan: nice to hear from you and hope you are doing well! Thank you for sharing about your Reed and the Gem. Really glad to hear the Gem is doing well in your care. Wishing your trees do well in this heatwave. It is getting hot and I noticed my Jan Boyce I grafted its leaves are burnt. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
little avocados looking so good
Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!

Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching my friend!
How far does your dad live from you what city maybe better weather
He lives in Orange County and I live in Los Angeles County. We are about 50 miles apart from each other. It is a little bit warmer where he lives. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching!
I am on coast in Northern California mine fruit alot later then southern ca
Thank you for sharing Edward, I think the temperature difference where I live from my Dad may cause our trees to fruit at different times. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Yeah that Bacon certainly has rooted into the ground. I hope you like where it is staying! 😅
Lol... my wife has been complaining about where I placed that tree, oh well:) Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
It's about time you posted an update. Love the close-up of the trunk size & slow derailed views. Age & whet size container when purchased.
Thank you for your comment, really appreciate it! I bought the Bacon (5 years ago), Nabal (4 years ago) and Reed ( in the ground 4 years ago and in the 15 gal, last year) all in 15 gal containers. The others I bought in 5 gallons ranging from 4 to 2 years ago. Will be doing any update video on my avocado trees in my avocado grove in the near future. Thank you for watching!
Lovely update Johnny, while you enjoy your morning coffee ☕️😀. Good to see that your trees were looked after while you were on vacation…. and plenty of baby avocados 🤩
Thank you Joe for your comment and thank you for watching! Your trees are looking great!
I always worry when I leave town on vacation though most of my trees are on drip
Hi Jeff: I have to do a better job on my irrigation drips, they tend to always break. Thank you for comment and thank you for watching! Your fruit trees are looking great and your channel is really blowing up! Well deserved since I learn a lot from watching your channel and you helped me a lot when I started growing my avocado trees, thank you!
how come you didnt line the wood with weed blocker? curious because i have a cedar raised plant bed and its common practice. thought it be the same with a cedar container
Actually that is a good suggestion to do that. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching!
Do you sell avocado scions?
Sorry, I don't sell scions. Thank you for watching!
so beautiful place majestic
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Possibly the Holly Grail plant for Ca growers. I've yet to see any in Cali successfully grow this. Though i just saw one individual post a vid showing potted plant 3' tall kept in a greenhouse.
Wow, I am impressed you know this fruit, this was a new one for me. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching Donald!
Wow, the awareness of the Japanese people is extraordinary, even though in narrow alleys they still plant fruit trees, don't forget to also visit the city of Jakarta. Indonesia, thank you my friend for sharing.
Thank you my friend for your comment and thank you for watching! I need to visit Jakarta one of these days, I heard it was a beautiful place. My roommate in college was from Jakarta. Thank you for watching!
6/15/2024 At sunshine growers nursery in Yucaipa Ca they are $95 for a 15 gallon size and nice looking trees. And if they don’t have the variety you’re looking for they will call their supplier and get it if available within the week.
Wow, that is a great price! Do you guys deliver to S. Cal? Thank you for watching!
Im a customer I know they deliver and have several locations. They also sell bulk materials most about $23 a tractor scoop. I bought 24” plastic tree pots for $10 each
Very cool, thank you for sharing and thank you clarifying you are a customer! Really appreciate comments from customers like me who really enjoy a certain nursery. Thank you for sharing!
@@SpYucaipaSoCal Those are great prices! Thank you for sharing!
I just went to Maddock nursery in Fallbrook this week in search of a avocado varieties. They have much more than just avocados. But they have 100s of 15 gallons avocados and thousands of other sizes. I also went to Elies in Fallbrook another from seed grower. My brother bought a huge 15 gallon pomegranate for $60 and a couple mexicola grande avocados that Maddock didn’t have at all but was limited to 5 gallon pots. They were $30 each and plenty to choose from. And they had lots of strains to choose from. But very little of the 15 gallon size.
Nice video ,thank you for sharing my friend.
Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching my friend!
Whaat Korea and Japan! Im so jealous
It was a lot of fun. Wow, the US dollar goes a long way in both countries right now. Hope you are doing well and hope you have a great weekend my friend! Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!

Lol... I should have bought some myself:) Really a fan of that anime. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!
Any updates on the cuttings?
They have grown into pretty large pomegranate trees. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching!
They are pretty good, they grow them in the north of Queensland, I live in the south so too cold to grow them, achacha are similiar with a hint of sour and they grow here. If you ever visit Australia you will have to come stay and have a tour.
Hi Doug: thank you for sharing and would really like enjoy visiting Australia one of these days. Definitely not surprised you know this fruit since you have a lot of really cool fruit trees I am not familiar with. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching my friend!
