    I agree about doing this loop counter-clockwise. You get the worst of the climbing and descending out of the way while you've still got energy and before the daytime heat builds up, and can cruise through the last couple of miles with relative ease.

    Nice views. That lookout is relatively new. In 1936 a L-4 groundhouse was constructed with an oversize stone base. The structure was replaced in 1975 with a 15’x 15’ standard R-6 flattop cab.

    I have hiked up here several times and camped along the lake in Fall. Loved this place. The trail coming up to the lake was burnt out about 10 years ago so there is a lot less trees and more lower vegetation now. As you can see the left side of Upper Eight Mile and some of the right side burnt out in the fire. You got the little eight mile lake then big eight mile. They were building the dam higher at Eight Mile Lake to hold back more of the water for irrigation for the Apple Groves. The core Enchantments are beautiful but most people miss seeing Shield and Earl Lake over Prusik Pass above Perfection Lake. I have hiked through the Enchantments for 10 years. I have been hiking in Washington State for 30 years and you are right there just is no better place to hike than Washington State.

    I have hiked the Enchantments many times but not when the Larch Trees have turned Golden and not on a thru hike. I spent 3 to 4 days in the Upper Core. This allows me to really experience this enchanted place. Beautiful!!!

    I was just there on 8/4/24. It was 96° outside. This is my first time attempting, and I didn't have any poles. I didn't get very far - probably ten minutes upward, moving fairly slowly because of the loose rock. The higher I ascended, the less confident I became in descending, so I took a panoramic shot of the opposite mountainside and went back down. I didn't think my shoes were too bad, but I think poles would definitely help. It's so hard to capture the size of these mountains on camera. I'm from out of town, but I'll be back to conquer it another time. I ate at The Red Pickle, afterwards!

    • @wanderingwashington
      @wanderingwashington 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      this took me 7.5 hours of moving time, 8 hours total. It's deceptive because you cruise to the bootpath and then you are still a ways from the summit because of the steep climb. Good luck!

      This was harder than Daniel in my opinion. I wouldn't say either are difficult. But Daniel is barely a scramble(97% class 2), so if you can do Hibox you can do Daniel for sure.

Dad always said, batteries die, the gas lantern will stay lit, and you can depend on them. 👍🏼 Dont get trapped in the dark! He would have us kids sit on the big rocks and shut off the lantern, and we could hear whizzing and air going by our heads... BATS!! 😮 Fun times🎉 Tickets?? Part of the reason why Lake Serene is known for being such an ankle-twister is because so many people attempt it in sneakers. I hike it all the time and see folks dressed like they're just visiting a city park. Proper hiking shoes or boots are essential. Poles are a really good idea as well. I agree though, hit the trail early especially if it's on a weekend. And yes... a more appropriate name for this hike is "Lake Stairmaster".

  • @DK-gy7ll
    @DK-gy7ll 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    When hiking always know your limits. If you get to the point where you're feeling low on energy or something hurts don't keep pushing on. The lakes/mountains will still be there next time. Too many people get "summit fever" and end up out in the woods longer than anticipated, and that's when they run into trouble. You were wise to call it quits at Gem Lake, especially hiking alone.
