Perfect Beginner DSLR for Under $250? (Nikon D3400 Review)
Hi, could you suggest me a good, inexpensive printer, maybe even a used one?
Sure! I print on a (used) Canon PRO-100 that I bought for $60. But it's BIG, heavy, and to replace all 8 ink cartridges is $120. Also you have to factor in paper cost. It prints up to 13 x 19 inches. I've heard good things about the Canon G620 / G650 / G550 (the same print quality for all of these models). It only prints up to 8.5 x 11 inches but the quality is good and maybe it could work for you. Definitely see if there's one available used because the new price isn't worth it (in my opinion). Another one to consider is the Canon iP8720 / iP8750 (prints up to 13 x 19"). I immediately went for the PRO series because of widely available ICC profiles for that line of printers. Epson is the other printer brand to consider (really it's just Canon vs. Epson at the consumer level now). Whatever you decide, first check how much it would cost to buy replacement ink! If you only expect to print a few times per year, it might make more sense to send the prints to a local lab (you'll pay something like $5 for 8x10)
Thanks for the video very helpful for me!
Happy to hear it :)
TOP 👌🏻
Just got my Sony effective 7.2 megapixel cybershot out a couple of weeks ago. Being beginner level it doesn't take better pictures than my phone but it is more enjoyable especially as the sony has a viewfinder even though it's tiny. You've given me some inspiration to carry on and try and take some better photos.
Thanks for watching! Yep I have a nice modern phone too, but when I'm using any camera (even the smallest compact) my brain goes into "photography" mode - meanwhile I prefer my phone for quick snaps and casual video like this one
It's the creativity first, gear second. I started on a dirt cheap thrift store camera and enjoyed it to DEATH. I was no less creative with _it_ than I am now with better gear :)
A statement that's worth repeating :) I think if someone truly enjoys photography, they'll enjoy it with any camera!
Well done :) Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for watching :)
Nice pics, you proved that the photographer makes the difference!
Thank you!
I just picked one up at the pawn shop for $34.... Pictures of pretty damn Sharp. Perfect for the photo buff... Don't recommend for action photos. But it works for taking colorful pictures.
Nice find! Yeah it's a fun camera, my favorite was pairing it with a 50 1.8
You did a great job with the little digicam. I've got and old Canon PowerShot I like to play around with from time to time. It's a lot of fun. Did you edit your shots? What software did you use?
Thanks! I used Adobe Lightroom Classic for some basic edits, no custom presets or anything - just played with the sliders a little until it matched how I remembered the scene.
@@lensvana thank you.
Just bought this second hand. Looking forward to using it this weekend
Nice! Still the best choice for Nikon DX wide angle in my opinion - enjoy :)
That's actually nice cheap lens with not bad optical quality. ONLY down thing is that it's MADE CHEAP and it feels. If it gets fungus in it - buy another lens, just don't disassemble it! This lens is not made for somebody to take it apart and clean, it's just absurd how such a big company packed optics inside... If you get fungus in between 1st and 2nd elements (bayonet side), you just can't get them apart without ruining a piece of plastic which holds those elements and after you clean them, elements do not stay in place and you need to glue them... It's so stupid... For 40-50$ if it's clean, it's ok to buy. If it starts to show some little spots that could be fungus - don't even consider to buy that, find another.
Holy moly, it's been a minute!
Indeed it has!
After a long time, welcome. 🤗
Thanks :)
Don't lie. I was shooting in the dark and shoots perfectly on my AF-P 18-50 G VR. It focuses quickly and the photos and videos are great and there is no noise.
Stupid people see what's on top and consider it an advantage, So you fool think that there are others better, but you are stupid and blind. Let it be so... It makes me laugh.
I have an iPhone 14 Pro is it worth getting the Sony rx100 V for videos? I'm mostly doing for the vlogging aspect and the flash. If not should I just stay with my phone? Or what compact camera would you recommend?
The iPhone 14 Pro has really great cameras and I think would work better for vlogging than the RX100 series! I would stay with the phone and invest in better audio for your viewers :)
Bought a RX 100 va in 2024. I have expensive cameras, but having the RX as a daily carry is turning out to be a lot of fun. It’s low key and offers enough control to create interesting shots. 100% happy with this purchase.
Well said! The VA would be my #1 choice in the entire RX100 lineup. No one takes you "seriously" on the street with an RX100 and that's one of the biggest benefits
I would get the Sony RX100VA
What bothers me is that many cool third party lenses are no longer produced for Pentax. And the original lenses from Pentax cannot compete with those from Canon and Nikon in terms of numbers.
Yep, this is definitely a limitation of the Pentax system. There are excellent first party lenses, but nowhere near the total selection in the Canikon world. And Canon/Nikon have a better selection for super telephoto. I think where Pentax excels is landscape/hiking/astro, taking full advantage of the robust build quality and weather sealing
@lensvana The 1.4 and 1.2 lenses other than 50mm/1.4 and 85mm/1.4 are also missing.
I bought a used camera a couple of years ago and evaluated the K30 vs K50 vs K70. My result was that the step from K30 to K50 was important, but I could be happy with the K50. It was the interim solution until I could afford the K1 Mark II, but now I am happy to have both.
Thanks for sharing your experience
I've a MKVA, it's a very capable little camera that meets all my needs, love it!
Very good contents!!! Thank!!!
Thank you!
I use this lens a lot and its is underrated.
Nikon d700 vs nikon d750 🤔 ????????
At today's used prices, I would recommend d750 for most people
I just grabbed one for $25 off eBay. Not a bad lens for cheap, plastic. It actually is decent for why I bought it.👍
I have to agree. I got this lens without the vr version. It is a very sharp. the only one fault that I have with this lens, is that you can't use it with you older nikon cameras. I think for the money its great. Cheers.
Do you know if it is compatible with the Nikon D90?
Unfortunately not, here's the full compatibility chart: www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000045777&configured=1&lang=en_GB&setRedirect=true
How many magnaparcels is recommended for a good picture?
Megapixels? It's not too important, most cameras have enough. For beginners I recommend cameras with 6 or more megapixels
Awesome photos! Makes me really want this camera but I don’t know about spending that much for a compact camera. I am thinking about getting the GRD and giving that a go! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank you! I think prices for the GR are absolutely crazy now, I wouldn't pay this much - so I support all alternatives :)
So helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by!
Is it switzerland, please?
Hi, what do you mean switzerland?
@@lensvana are the films from switzerland, i meant.
@@Mme.Swisstella I'm in Canada, the video main picture is someone else - could be anywhere :)
Thank you...very informative. Going to purchase a used nikon d750 tomorrow. 😊
Cool! Easily one of the best value used cameras on the market today - hope you get a good one :)
Back in the day I didn't like Minolta MC glass, course I've been a big colour slide film shooter, and those lenses are giving a greenish - yellow tint, which was impossible to avoid, especially with Kodak Ektachrome films. However, these days, all those colour problems are easy to avoid, in various ways...
Very useful comments and great chrat at the end. Tks.
Thanks for watching!
On the Nikon Website there are all sorts of lens compatibility lists. Even an excel file for every Nikon model. It is fascinating stuff to research..
One correction: At 2:54, the narration says "Our irises expand in bright light and contract in dim light". Actually, the reverse of this is true.
I love Minolta lenses. I have got 28 f2.8, 50 f1.4, 35-70 f4, 100 mm macro and the 70-210 mm (beercan). Plus a Tokina 135 mm
That's a great set! I really like the 50 F1.4, 100mm macro, and I've been using the 35-70 f3.5 a lot lately too.
They are not that cheap to get in my country, but the D40 is kult 😊
D40 gang represent :)
@@lensvana Proud new owner since yesterday 🙂
I love my D700. Bought it new when it came out and I´m never going to sell it. Also have a D800, a D200 and a D7000. I like them all, but I guess the 700 is my favorite. Something about the look of the files that is more film-like to my mind, particularly in low light. Could be the larger pixels compared to the 800, maybe. Naturally, the 800 excels when cropping is necessary.
Thanks for sharing! There's something to be said for big, "clean" pixels if that makes any sense. When properly exposed, images from the D700 simply shine
This lens is actually quite useful for some tasks (for me, I bought one used and use it as a backup lens in case one of my other standard zoom lenses deicdes to stop working for whatever reason or gets damaged). But honestly I would never pay the full $399 for it. I paid about $180 for mine (used but in good conditin) but I don't think it's worth $399 new especially since you can get a used 24-70 f/4 for about $400 anyway.
Yep, agreed! $180 to 200 sounds about right for this lens. And a used 24-70 F4 is one of the biggest bargains in photography today.
I have other vintage Nikons and love them. I just ordered this one. I have a D200 with the CCD sensor and the colors are great. Great video!
Thanks for watching - hope you enjoy your new D40! I also have the D200... and I'm never selling it :)
@@lensvana I have the D200 and 700 also. Great cameras.Just wait 10 years and the Z9 will be $300🤣
@@edc5338 You've got all the classic sensors :) Re: Z9, the wait begins haha
Yes! Great vid. Full frame DSLR's in general are too big, obese. This one is more agile and fits better. Underrated camera.
Very nice information about how to analyse exit pupil. Wonderful explanation
Thanks :)
Oh boy, my first DSLR I bought new. I was a total beginner when I bought this and my friends gave me the weird look when I got this instead of a Canon or a Nikon. To this day, I still not just own this camera, but keep its batteries charged and use it, albeit not that often. It's truly a memorable piece of equipment in my fotography journey and its weatherproof build with the WR lenses makes it stand out. By the way, you are a very skilled photographer! Your choices are great and knowing the limits of this camera, I just wanted to underline that you truly know what you do. Thanks for this post, it made me smile and remember my first "real" camera. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your photographic journey! I think that first DSLR, whatever it may be, will always be special for any photographer. Bottom line, it's just a very enjoyable camera to shoot - hope you give yours a proper workout again soon! :)
What an excellent explanation, thanks for this! Really helps in that buying decision. We now have the Prostaff P7 and very impressed with the clarity and usability.
Thanks for the kind words - glad it was helpful! The P7 is probably the one I'd buy if I had to replace my existing pair :)
i'm just waiting for a kit i bought on ebay with a SRT-200 and the 50mm f/2 starred on the sheet, plus a 35mm f/2.8 (the 90$ on the sheet is more than the whole kit so that's probably a bargain!) , a 135mm f/3.5 that's not featured on the sheet and a pmz 80-200mm f/4.5 that i can't find anything about on the internet, do you have any thoughts on those last two?
Hey that's a great deal! The 135mm F3.5 from what I hear is a good performer from F5.6, but even wide open can be used for portraits. It's tiny and lightweight which are the main advantages. The 80-200 I'm not sure about, I know there were lots of those made by third party manufacturers in those days - it won't blow you away but could be a versatile tool at F8 in good light
@@lensvana i only own the 16-50 kit lens of my old sony a3000 and i was needing a film slr anyway (and minolta slr is a great cost-benefit at that) so that's still 4 lenses for a good price, i guess i'll have to see what the third party 80-200 can do (i guess bird photography will put it to a harsh test for this), but i'm still really satisfied with that purchase and i have high hopes for when it arrives! i'll let you know about the 80-200 when i get it
@@soupslicer136 Nice! Hope you enjoy your new film slr kit :)
