I have lived in Russia for 20 years and have a lot of knowledge about life in Russia, how people live in Russia, Homes in Russia, Russian schools, raising children in Russia, Russian food, travel in Russia, Russian people, Russian customs and just about anything else you can think of concerning Russia. Living for 20 years in an area of the world can give you a different perspective on life there than you would have during a short stay.

23 years ago, when I first arrived in Russia, Russian outdoor markets were the only choice for your shopping. To me, they were scary dangerous places, at least that is how I remember it now.
It required good planning, good aggression skills and the heart of a lion to shop back then. Now, all the soft people go to supermarkets.

Americans and Russians Still Close in Florida
You need to find some other pursuit and means how to express yourself. May be an autobiography book. Because this is just a pain to watch.
I remember markets in the 90s, that was an exotic experience, especially in winter when you wear close or shoes in an open cold air standing on a cardboard to avoid stepping into street dirt while seller compliments your looks) But it was much, much better on smaller towns where they mostly sell their own food. Its super good, all natural.
Don't you have anything to show except this box of berries?
No. The only outdoor market footage I have is from 2019. Obviously, I can't get my hands on footage from 2002. Walking around an outdoor market now for B-Roll would make no sense because everything I had to say about the outdoor markets was from 2002. So, the choice became either berries or my talking head. Not all that spellbinding I admit, but better than my face for all of the time.
Thanks for the smiles! you forgot to mention the Ladas (cars) stuffed full of live chickens (in cages) heading to the market in the early mornings. Feathers everywhere 😂😂😂. Love the market fresh chicken of today way more than the “blue” (yes blue) chickens of days past 😮
Sure, that brought a smile to my face. I once saw a motorcycle with a sidecar, the sidecar was heaped to overflowing with horse manure. I was so mad I did have anything with me to take a photo.

Да, трудно понять, почему, я имею в виду, русский язык ближе к Китаю, откуда и так поступает большая часть материала.
Хорошая одежда сейчас в интернете, а не в России или США. Я уж и не помню когда что-то покупал не в сети. А теперь объясните мне так чтобы я понял что такое "хорошая одежда в США". Как бы американцы ни обижались, одеваются они, мягко говоря, не очень. Хорошую одежду я бы не стал покупать в США, кроме джинсов. Ну а те же американские джинсы я без проблем покупаю в интернете не дороже, чем в США.
@americaninrussia Да легко это объяснить. Во-первых, морская логистика дешевле поезда. Во-вторых, одежда идёт из Индии и Бангладеша, а не Китая. В США ещё идёт одежда из Мексики. В-третьих, дешёвая одежда шьётся рабами. Объёмы не те, чтобы на весь мир шить.

Ты прав, что американцы, как правило, не очень хорошо одеты. Иногда кажется, что там соревнуются, кто может одеваться хуже. Что касается "хорошей одежды", там много производителей одежды очень высокого качества. Например, любая вещь от компании L.L. Bean, хотя и дороже, чем вещи здесь, прослужит почти вечно, поэтому имеет смысл покупать вещи у них. Я также согласен с тем, что ты сказал о покупках в Интернете. Тот факт, что ты можешь вернуть вещь еще до того, как за нее заплатишь, делает ее почти безрисковой.

Back in 2019, when I filmed that shot in the market, the cranberries were about 600 rubles per kilo.

My set in stone memories are, in no order of when they happened: the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, the assassination of actor Rebecca Schaeffer, the assassination of John Lennon, the murder/suicide of actor Phil Hartman(murdered) and his wife Brynn(suicide), the first school shooting massacre that I recall at Columbine, the school shooting massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school(but still no effective gun control laws, SMH), when the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup and when they won their second S.C. the next season, when the Toronto Blue Jay's won their first World Series and when they won their second W.S. the following season, when the Berlin Wall came down, the horrific Maui fires of 2023, both the Challenger and the Columbia space shuttle explosions, the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and that bizarre time that the United States elected an admitted sexual predator to their highest public office, hopefully they aren't foolish enough to let that happen again this November. There are more, but that's plenty. Open question to anyone who cares to answer: What are your moments in history that are seared into your memory?

Hey Sam, I do speed up my walks, but actually prefer walking elsewhere so I don't have to look at my unfinished projects. In the winter I have a snowblower and keep it all clear of snow.

Also, if you travelled to the US after a long break- would be very interesting to hear your impression of America after living abroad for so long. Did you notice any difference, did US change for better, worse, stayed the same?
In my opinion, it has changed for the worst in very big ways. I love seeing family there, but the country isn't half the country I left 23 years ago. I left because of a girl, who I'm now married to. I didn't leave due to dissatisfaction. I never thought that a country, and frankly, a civilization could fall so fast and far so quickly. I hate what's happened.
Would you perhaps care making a video about? No need to go into politics. Just your observations. Maybe telling us about America of your youth? How was it like growing up for you, how the neighbours were like, culture in general and so on. You're very insightful person and Im sure you have lots to say on the matter.

Бабушки в 7-30 утра могли ехать в медицинские учреждения по направлениям на обследования и амбулаторное лечение. Могли быть работающими пенсионерами и ехать на работу, могли ехать детям своим помогать по дому, пока те на работе итд итп. У бабушек забот выше крыши и тогда и сейчас

Мне не нравятся современные автобусы , а в Икарусе удобные кресла и стоять удобнее и форточки большие.
Да, почти все время в автобусах Ikarus я проводил стоя. Они были хорошо подготовлены для этого, я согласен.
Нет лучше автобуса чем Икарус. Кому то в нём было зябко зимой , а мне норм и удобно. Самый вместительный, а ещё кресла удобные не современные черпаки уродские. Жаль завод склеил ласты. А вот настоящее уродство это ПАЗики это откат и деградация в автобусостроении в 18 век.
Один из способов согреться в автобусе Ikarus зимой - это когда вам приходилось выходить с 50 другими пассажирами и помогать толкать его на холм. Это меня согревало! На самом деле, это случилось со мной только один раз, и я согласен с вами относительно сидений.

No, I didn't butcher Chelyabinsk. If that happened it happened without my help. I bailed out before they opened the big GOK plant nearby and destroyed the air even more. Maybe you are speaking about my pronunciation of "Chelyabinsk". Apart from the air quality, I have a lot of good Chelyabinsk memories and left a lot of good friends behind when I left.

I actually have 5 children. Three sons in the US, and two daughters here in Russia. They are all my biological children. Our daughters were born here in Russia almost 19 years ago and my sons are ages 41 through 46. Throw another 7 grandchildren into the mix also. One advantage for my daughters having an American dad was that they are 100% bilingual. Have won so many language competitions while in school, they also got 100% scholarships to Moscow universities, where they are now in their 2nd year. Russian/American mixture is also a good one. They are both beautiful and very smart.
