This was a busy week so I just shot this video, "on the fly" in Moscow and Tambov. I'll talk a little about some of the cultural norms concerning vodka drinking. Not all follow these norms, but many do.
If you are a westerner planning on a trip to Russia, you may want to pay attention, maybe even make notes.
No doubt Russian culture partially involves vodka drinking and I hope to explain to you some of the etiquette involved. This is not a video about drunk Russians, there is actually only one drunk person, a drunk American in Russia, yeah, me.

Боевой клич «На здоровье!» существует только в американском кино. В реальности предлагается выпить «за здоровье», а подняв рюмку говорят «Будем здоровы!» или просто «Будем!».
Да, к сожалению, американские фильмы не передают реальной жизни. Я думаю, люди не стали бы их смотреть, если бы они это сделали. Меня смущало, что люди, которые никогда не были в Америке, думают, что в фильмах представлена реальная картина жизни там.

Вы правы насчет здоровья. Я просто передаю некоторые свои переживания в прошлые времена. Я скажу, что мой опыт употребления алкоголя в России был более приятным, чем в Штатах. Никаких правил здесь нет, и правила часто отражают передовой опыт.

Стереотипы. Редкие случаи в компании бывают. По прилёту, вам не будут предлагать водку, как и после. Желаешь пить, пей... Не хочешь, не пей. Дурные предрассудки о которых заявляет этот человек на видео. Кстати, американцы пьют чаще и больше, чем русские. Давно пора знать об этом

From what I know, to "make it up for three" (and don't quote me on that, because i was born in 89) came about because in the Soviet times a half litre of vodka cost like 2,7 roubles, and a pack of Druzhba processed cheese cost about 30 kopecks, so 3 dudes could each give a rouble and get a bottle and something to make it go down better.
You are the third person to relate that story, so it certainly rings true to me.

Не знаю как в других регионах России, но по этикету лучше выпить всю рюмку после произнесения тоста. Иначе это будет не красиво... Получится, что вы не поддерживаете хороший тост или не искренни ) Если не хотите много пить, то просто попросите, чтобы вам наливали не целую рюмку. А вообще, лучше пить хороший и качественный самогон ) Это спасёт вас от тяжёлой головы на следующий день. Ну и во всём нужно знать меру )

@@americaninrussia Недопитая рюмка - "ты меня не уважаешь?" - это древняя манипуляция с целью сильно напоить. Так поступал царь Пётр I, и наверное князья ещё раньше. Особенно хорошо работает с иностранцами, старающимися соблюдать местные обычаи. 🙂
Если вам нужно сохранить приемлемый уровень трезвости, вы можете поступить именно так как вы описали - не допивать рюмку. Но лучше это начать делать после третьей. Это вполне приемлемо. Вы можете даже просто перестать пить после нескольких рюмок. Это вполне нормально. На самом деле ни один адекватный русский на вас не обидится. И другие окружающие тоже.

Did you know that around the 70s of the last century, Poland in an international court took away from the USSR the right to be considered the birthplace of vodka. First of all, this concerned sales of vodka in the West and in the USA. The Russians took the trial lightly and lost the trial. But there is a saying: “Russians take a long time to harness, but then they go fast.” Therefore, the Russians filed an appeal, and in a short time they organized an entire scientific institute to study the history of vodka. It was irrefutably and documented that in the Middle Ages Poland had no economic opportunity to even think about inventing vodka, there were no people (monks) who could do it, there was no free grain for the monks to experiment, and no there was land where this grain could be grown. At the same time, all this happened in Russia, and not only did it happen, but documents were found that in our time we would call accounting invoices; the chain along which wheat was turned into vodka was documented. In general, when considering the appeal, the court returned the right to the advertising slogan “Only vodka from Russia geniuine vodka” to the USSR. A book was written about this story. And the funny thing is that the author of the book bore the last name Vodkin.
That was a very interesting story and I thank you for sharing it. I also thought that polish vodka used potatoes and not grain. Very appropriate name of the author.

" В малых дозах - змеиный яд полезен, а в больших дозах - молоко вредно!" В малых дозах при хорошей закуске хорошая водка бодрит, успокаивает, расслабляет, повышает аппетит! И зачем пить больше? Лично для меня оранжевая линия расположена между второй и третьей рюмки 50-75 гр., красная линия между третьей и четвертой!

It is sometimes the case that an outsider interprets some traditions overly mystifying them. This is how stereotypes arise. It's not a knock on your take, it is how it works for all of us.
There is no sacred rule of the three. There are two aspects to it. As 0,5L is a THE most common dosage for vodka bottles it is just the empirical value. If three guys drink 0,5L of vodka it's not too much and enough for them to enjoy it. And then back in the Soviet Union everything had fixed prices(which would change over time, but it would still be the same price for the same product throughout the country). The price of a 0,5L bottle of vodka was 2 Rubles and 87 Kopeikas way back in the day. Which meant if three guys give a Ruble each, they could buy a botlle and drink it. That created the idiom "сообразить на троих", roughly meaning "fix something for three". So when the people refer to it it is actually more jokingly rather then refering to a rule or a ritual to be observed. There is no rule or social tradition against two guys drinking together, or four or whatever. Drinking alone is often regarded as wrong and the path to alcoholism though. Company is indeed an important factor. All vodka drinking traditions are about having a good time in good company.
Vodka bottles used to have an aluminium cap that you could not put back on once the bottle was open. But that has nothing to do with the above or why the bottle had to be finished. The cap itself was more of a product of a tradition. This one is a real ritual and tradition. Whatever vodka bottle you open, you finish it. That is the rule. Leftovers are a rare thing(and obviously it wouldn't be a big deal to cap the bottle if need be). A part of it s the no empty bottles on the table rule. Well, those go back ages and are partially some real ancient mysticism and superstitions. The one similar I can think of is a gypsy tradition of not eating cooked food that remained overnight. You can imagine with no fridges or other preservation it was a highly practical thing. But there are obviously mystical components added like the bad spirits who reign at night would mingle with your food. My guess is it is similar with drinking traditions in Russia. An opened bottle you empty. So think before opening another.
Those were some really great explanations. Thanks for sharing them with me. You are the second person to point out the price of a bottle of vodka during Soviet being 2 rubles and 87 kopeks and therefore three people each kicking in 1 ruble each. Sounds sensible. But again, thanks for the explanations. I love learning new things about a culture. One thing though, I didn't base my explanation upon my own observations, but rather was told this by my wife, who is Russian. In any case, I'm going to copy and paste you great explanations in my notes for the future. They were very interesting.

А если серьёзно правила есть: опоздавшим штрафная, рука наливающего не меняется, после тоста и чоканья рюмка на стол не ставится, третий тост за безвременно ушедших не чокаясь, пустую тару на стол не ставят - это из основных! Ну и если хорошая пьянка мешает работе - ну её нафиг такую работу)))
Я слышал обо всех этих правилах и хотел бы включить их в видео. Проблема заключалась в том, что меня не было в городе, и мои обычные мысли не были при мне. Обычно мне нравится сесть и подумать о вещах, даже написать какую-нибудь заметку, чтобы напомнить себе. В этот раз я пробыл в Москве чуть больше суток, но это был семейный бизнес. I don't know. I mean, I have no doubts that this is the tradition, but it seems to me that these days people may be more moderate in their drinking. It just seems to me that this is denying control of the individual and handing all control to the person who is giving the toasts. Truth be told, I'm a "drink the entire shot" kind of guy, but some can't drink so much and there are also women, so I don't think that these days a host would be offended if you drank half. But I'm not Russian, so how I feel about Russian traditions really shouldn't matter anyhow.

The youth are great beer drinkers.
Another important thing to know when drinking vodka. You can always say "I'll skip it." This is absolutely normal. No, it happens when young people start talking like "Do you respect me?", but this is rare. Even among the young. Among older people who have already seen everything, such behavior is more likely to cause understanding rather than protest.
I imagine you are right and I do think it would be easier to say this when you are older. Younger people get influenced by peer pressure.

Пить бутылку водки на троих произошло не из-за этого. В советское время многие рабочие на заводах были сильно зависимы от водки. Других развлечений у данного населения особо и не было. В день получения зарплаты на заводе, у проходных дежурили жены данных работников, чтобы сразу же забрать зарплаты у своих мужей, иначе они могли загулять и пропить большую часть этой зарплаты за один день. Каждое утро жены выдавали мужьям на работу по 1 рублю для обеда в заводской столовой. Но мужья не тратили этот рубль, а вечером шли и покупали водку. Но самая дешевая водка в 70-е годы стоила 2 рубля 87 копеек. Поэтому и надо было найти еще двух таких же любителей. Вот и получалось на троих 3 рубля. А на оставшиеся 13 копеек покупался плавленный сырок "Дружба", который использовался в качестве закуски.
Спасибо, что исправили меня по этому поводу. Такая интересная история, и я рад это узнать. Я знал о многих женах, ожидающих на заводе, чтобы получить заработную плату, прежде чем они смогут потратить ее, но не знали о дешевой водке. Я собираюсь снять видео "шорты" на TH-cam "с этим исправлением

Спасибо за ваш рассказ. Всегда для меня непонятно такое внимание к водке. Я вот не пью и никогда не пила(мне 37 лет) в моей семье тоже не пьют. А когда познакомилась с мексиканкой на ЧМ по футболу в 2018 то у неё столько восхищения было от водки. Мне кажется, что такте напитки не совсем подходят молодым девушкам.И не все русские ее пьют.
Водка, безусловно, является чем -то, что нужно правильно относиться. Во многих случаях это может добавить некоторое развлечение, но в случае злоупотребления он может разрушить жизнь и семьи. Мне это очень нравится, но на самом деле редко пьет это.

Frankly, as a Russian, I think this habit of drinking to excess is just a problem of those who do it. In general, even in company, a maximum of 250 grams per person is enough for a party. You can have a beer after a while to prolong the effect (but not wine or God forbid things like martinis). And if one is going to drink a decent amount of vodka, they need a hearty meal - not just appetizers, but hot meat food or there's a risk of feeling bad or losing control. This shit takes a lot of energy. I remember I lived for a while in the Caucasus where the climate is fantastic, and there I drank every night without any consequences like hangovers. But after that I moved to Siberia: the first week I tried the same regime, and on the third day I felt sick and wanted roast for a snack.
As for a single man in a female company - you're still rather the one who serve, unless you're a very handsome specie that everyone wants (but even in this case you should not become a toy).
I agree that 250 grams should be enough for most and that they shouldn't feel obligated to drink more, unless it is their choice. 250 grams is enough to make you less inhibited, more social and happy, even prepare you to sing. I do understand if you are the only man in a company of women that you should pour and open bottles. My wonder is if there are no men present, what custom do the women follow?
@@americaninrussia Oh, now I get it, sorry. Well, I didn't peek, but I think it's the same as in a men's company: the host does it (although it's still the matter of formality and the table arrangement) - and after everyone gets drunk, anyone can do, or some males show up .from nowhere...

This is funny im a Russian living in US for over 20 years and here in America i used to work for a Russian Jew from Odessa who owned a small medical clinic. So anyway, sometimes his friends would come over to drink Vodka in the back office... They were all reasonably wealthy man, you know.... one of them owned a car service another a few restaurants etc... But they would always buy the cheapest most horrible vodka available in the US called Gordon because it reminded them of some vodka they used to drink growing in up in Odessa and they just couldn't get enough of it lol
Yeah, Gordon also makes gin over there; also not very good. Another bad one is Popov vodka.

Vodka is not drunk in small sips, like cognac or whiskey. You must completely drain a small 50 gram glass or a large 200 gram glass in one gulp!

Some thoughts:
1) when movies say “Na zdorov'e” - that's never how they say it when drinking alcohol. Don't do that. “Na zdorov'e” is a response to the phrase ‘Spasibo’ (Thank you).

It is usually said as response when thanking someone for a meal. “Na zdorov'e” translates to ‘for health’. Makes sense.
2) The usual Russian shot glass is 50 grams. You can also drink one shot. As a respect, and then drink juice or mineral water, for example. A person can drink one shot after a hard day, sometimes. One drink and that's it.
3) When you are offered to drink vodka, it is a kind of initiation. So one shot will probably be necessary.
4) Vodka is good with hot fatty dishes - soup (borscht or shchi), cutlets, shashlik, steak. Do not drink vodka if you are hungry and if there is not enough zakuski (food to eat with vodka). A good housewife will offer enough food. Eat a lot.
5) Take your time, it's not a competition. You can even say - “I'll skip this shot”. That's okay. The goal is to have a good mood.
6) It is interesting that Russians appreciate both the ability to drink and are happy when they manage to get someone drunk. In this case, you will be taken care of and they will not say a bad word. But self-control - it will be valued.
7) Vodka should be cold. Often vodka is stored in the freezer.
All very good points, I'll copy them and put them in my notes in order to learn more about the subject. Thanks! Drinking cold or at room temperature seems to be a point of controversy. I do prefer cold, but then you can't get the taste as well.

The main rule is that vodka should be cold.
You know, I like it cold also, but other viewers have made a good case for drinking it at about 15 degrees C. I'm told that the coldness just hides the taste.

My ex schoolmate told me that at his trip in USA his relatives living in Pennsylvania told him they don't like southern US states because they are so Russian. He also confirmed that by all things he saw in North Carolina later. So, when I'm watching your videos I think they're also ones which prove more that people of southern US states are so Russian
I've never heard anyone say that about the southern states being too Russian, not even sure what that would be based on. Of course they are a little different in the South. See, I'm actually from the north. New England specifically. I spend most of my life there. I actually prefer the south in so many ways. today at the canteen in my office I was soo glad to see typical zakuski food on the menu like herring, lightly salted cucumbers and my favorite cold Okroshka soup (and we usually don't have that stuff on the menu, today's was special) so I ordered all of these and the people around were laughing calling my meal a real Dacha style meal, noticing that the only thing missing is vodka. that was hilarious😂
What a great lunch you had. I haven't had Okroshka yet this summer. My wife makes this really good. I'll have her pick up some good Kvass and make some this weekend.

Я не люблю водку. Предпочитаю коньяк или бальзам какой-нибудь. Но на рыбалке или охоте на тебя посмотрят, как на инопланетянина, если ты притащишь такую херню. Так что приходится давиться водкой. К тому же коньяк не принято обильно закусывать, а застолье - наше все. В общем, не люблю водку, но пью с удовольствием. Ведь главное не напиться, а провести время в хорошей компании и расслабиться.

Думаю, какое-то время это работало.
Водка, сильна закуской. Меня всегда удивляло, в американских фильмах, как люди взяв стакан пьют водку маленькими глоточками. Она же противная на вкус без закуски. Если закуски нет и есть цель нажраться в хлам, то нужно пить гранеными стаканами и занюхивать рукавом. И мне кажется, что любой, кто пьет маленькими глоточками, заблюет всю округу, пока литр выпьет 🙄
Американцы понятия не имеют, как правильно пить водку. Я надеюсь, что если они узнают культивируемый способ питья водки, им будет наслаждаться гораздо большим.
У меня непереносимость водки. Она на меня не действует, сначала, очень долго. А потом, когда все уже лежат, резко "пошли поплаваем голыми", "какой прикольный дорожный знак", "чота мне не хорошо", "фонтан дружбы народов" и больная голова на полтора дня, муть по всему телу неделю. Два таких "заплыва" в юности отвадили 😂😂

Даже если женщины купили алкоголь на свои деньги, то они всё равно отдают его под командование мужчин. По крайней мере, в моей реальности всегда было именно так. Иногда, когда девушки очень хотят выпить, но их рюмки пусты, то от них можно услышать такую шуточную фразу: «Ну, мужики, наливайте, иначе мы сейчас уйдём!»... 😆
Иногда для кого-то что-то более заметно, когда он впервые в стране. Я имею в виду, что все новое и многие вещи отличаются от них.
Дорогой друг, проверьте свои сосуды сердца и мозга. Это простая процедура, но она поможет Вам прожить долгую и счастливую жизнь.
There are a few important things in drinking vodka to my Russian point of view:
1. Choosing vodka. Practically any vodka in Russia is good. About 300 rub. per bottle in discounted retail can buy a good vodka. There is no poit to pay more. Watch for the production region. I avoid vodka produced on Caucasus. No offence for their distilleries). It's also good if vodka doesn't contain sugar. They started to add sugar to make it smoother in 90th. Absolute appeared on the market, it was smooth and people liked it in 90th. Sugar gives hangover.
2. Vodka should not be served icy cold. It's a huge mistake! Because being icy cold vodka loses it's taste. Vodka does have taste! The temperature should be aroud 15 degree Celsius.
3. Meal. Vodka should not be consumed without meal (zakuska). Not every meal is good with vodka. My favourite combinations are borsch or pelmeny or pancakes with salmon or salmon caviar+vodka).
4. The most important is to learn you limit and avoid exceeding one. Limit tends to shrink with age. 😂 That is what i know for sure.
5. Do not mix vodka with other spirits.
Russian vodka is one of the best spirits invented by humans. Enjoy it!

Well, a hundred grams of vodka with radiation is not only a means to forget about the problem, but also protection from radiation. В 2000 - ых еще много пили в нашей стране, но это все мелочи в сравнении с тем , что было в СССР. Масштабы пьянства были циклопическими это была эпидемия. Коммунисты устроили геноцид собственного народа. Горбачев очень беспокоился о своем имидже среди простого народа, но был вынужден пойти на очень непопулярные меры и объявить сухой закон, потому что в проблема приняла масштабы национальной катастрофы .

Как раз циклопических размеров пьянство достигла при горбачёвско-лигачёвском сухом законе. Самогон гнали едва ли не в каждой квартире. Потом всё это плавно перешло в 90е, когда рояль потёк рекой.

I don't know what happens at a female only party, but several years ago, at my daughter's husband's father's 60th Jubilee, I was dragged off by all the widows. They plied me with women's vodka, (fruit flavoured vodka). They all wanted me to choose one of them. Unfortunately, perhaps, I was still legally married, so that wasn't going to happen. They're all still "aunts" to the extended family. They got me legless! My daughter told me the next day that she had to fight them off to take me home to sleep it off. She asked me who I wanted, I said that a few were interesting, but I would only choose when sober. Nothing eventuated, until a few years later, when a long standing joke about a younger girl, developed into a very good relationship. No vodka was involved.
That's a great story! That's what I love about comments. Most people have cool stories they can talk about.

В видео я рассказал о реальных событиях, которые у меня были, когда я приехал сюда, и не выставил их в плохом свете. На самом деле единственный человек, о котором я упоминаю, когда он напился, был я, американец в России. Я не уверен, что реальный опыт на самом деле является стереотипом.
