- After posting nearly 50 videos, I'm not that impressed with my You Tube skills and apparently the internet agrees with me. Time to make a change or die trying I guess.

I'd suggest you to make videos together with other foreign youtubers in Russia (maybe you could give an interview to Countryside Acres, for example? or someone else of your preference, or even reach out to Russian media - they love making content about foreigners), plus start making shorts. You don't need to record some new footage for the shorts, just use pieces of your current videos. Chances will be higher that people would see a short video, get interested and watch the full version.
You have a very calm and intelligent manner of speaking. I'm sure it has a potential to draw a lot of people. You just gotta be exposed to more viewers, and it's all gonna be good. Please, don't beat yourself up with stuff like "Sam is so great and I am so not" :D This is not truth, you have your unique traits that can shine. I gave thumbs up to all of your videos, wishing you best luck.
Up, I fully agree
I will be taking your advice on shorts, but at this time not making videos with other TH-camrs. It's not that it is a bad idea, it's just that our experiences are not so relatable to each other due to the length of time here. I have a couple of TH-camrs that I know who have also been here a long time and I may think about getting together with them to share relevant info. As for Russian media; I did this many years ago. At this point in time I won't do this again. Whether it be Western Media or Russian media, it'll be twisted to suit their propaganda purposes.
@@americaninrussia congrats on 26k views😂 It really blew up.
@@angrybirdie999 Thank you! It sure did, I was shocked.
I just encountered your channel 30 minutes ago. Fifteen kids to Russia simply must be interesting. Stories like that make me envious. I do not have a channel myself, so I am not about to criticise those who are brave enough to run one. I doubt I could ever do as well as you already are. But I admit that I don't find an item like in today's video engaging. So I subscribed in order to keep an eye on what you usually deliver, and in order to support you. How many viewers are like me, that is, we don't daydream of Palm trees, beaches and blondes, but of being useful in a country that shares my values -:- and more than any other country that can make a difference - That looks like Russia. One channel I follow shows a lot of family logistics, transport, building, and recreation, and in that mixed bag there is something for every followers taste. Others do interviews. Another makes a feature of raising the question as to whether Russia is a SAFE country? And others are into Geopolitics. I responded to your wanting feedback with my feeling. I do admit that I did not get so far into this video before glazing over and moving on. My best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks though. Yeah, mostly talking head can make it a snoozer for sure. Just trying to explain my situation and hope that the future videos are more interesting.

Anything that does not portray Russia in a negative way struggles on TH-cam. That’s how the algorithm works, as algorithms are programmed that way. What might help is click-bity titles that suggest negativity about Russia. Like …
American family struggling in Putin’s sanctioned economy?
Am I getting drafted into Putin’s army?
Do we suffer from malnutrition in Russia under sanctions?
American family trapped in declining Russian?
… and so on.
You're right about this. The guy whose channel I recommended (Sam's Russian Adventures) does this a lot. Seems to work for him.
But click-bity titles have a risk... disappointing those who come in expecting a video based on negativity. Consequence: premature exit, dislikes and more dislikes. The comments even grow (positive) but are negative, of disappointment.
Absolutely right!

You make good points. I actually don't care so much to have a higher number of subscribers. Even if I were to get monetized, I would actually just donate it to my church. I'm fortunate in the respect that I don't really need the money; it's just a hobby. I do try to be open about my private life, but I really won't open my daughters lives or my wife's life. It does hurt because it is always more interesting with several people making the video, but I really can't do this.
Mark it's the algorithm. Sam was saying the same thing months ago and was really down trying to figure out why people wernt watching the videos. For example this is the first time TH-cam decided to show me your video. Keep up the great work.

i'm doing youtube too and i'm not the best and i don't spend much time on it. But I can give you some pointers from what I've learned.
1. Nicer thumbnails, think of it as the advertisement for your video and should attract people to click on it. I see that the pictures you had about 2 years ago looked much better than the ones you do now?
2. If something works, do something similar again. You're always experimenting with new types of videos, but if you see that some type of video is getting extra views (for example, your two videos about Moscow) study them and find out why people like them and try to replicate that success in other videos .
3. Follow trends for content similar to yours. You mentioned this but it's good to see what similar channels like yours are doing for the type of videos and what works for them. You obviously have to adapt it for your videos and your audience.
4. Having said this, I want to clarify that it is important that you do what you think is fun and not just do stuff for views as it will not last long term. Be yourself.
Good luck 😊
Ps. I subscribe in support 🤝
Thanks a lot for your pointers. I really appreciate it. AS for the thumbnails, I used to have these done by Fiverr then they stopped serving Russia. The latest ones are the terrible ones I've done. Good luck on your channel also.
A rare example of a justified clickbait.
Thanks! I was a bit concerned prior to posting.
we made a lot of videos with my wife about trips when it was not fashionable! We visited many places and countries that were very interesting and were not or rarely visited by tourists! we made many videos in such a quality that you can watch them on a big screen. From places that you will probably never reach or don't have time to explore! we put a lot of work into the editing and filming, but we're tired, but at least we'll keep it to ourselves!Over several years, we managed to collect 300+ subscribers, and thousands of people saw it, but did not press the subscribe button! Thumbnails are a big part of it Mark! I'd recommend reformatting your "packaging" (Titles and Thumbnails) then make sure the content in the videos is worth sticking around for. YOU are the content, not the trends you're seeing. People gravitate with people they can relate with so try documenting, not creating as it puts less pressure on putting videos out. Try new things out and if it works, great! But make videos you're interested in as that's really all that matters..
Yeah, I know that thumbnails are a big part of it and in spite of knowing this, I just whip up some sort of thumbnail at the end. I do need to put a lot more thought and time into this aspect.
@@americaninrussia It doesn't need to be super complicated either. Canva has plenty of ways to make an attractive eye catching thumbnail and if you take a few decent selfies, you can throw whatever background you want to it.

If you like to cook, you could make some videos of step-by-step preparation of your favorite foods. I would watch)
I do like to cook and perhaps I'll make that a feature within some of the future videos.
I enjoyed the video and will throughout the week or so go view more. I also subscribed today after I randomly got this in my video feed. Not sure when was the first time you were in Russia, but I arrived in late May of 2000 when I met and then wed my Russian wife in Temryuk Russia. She months later arrived in PHX where we lived for 11 years and then we moved to Northern California in the Sierra Mountain foothills for another 10 years. Apple and grape Country with rolling and hillside vistas. Absolutely beautiful. We now live for 2 plus years already in Sochi. Again, beautiful rolling landscapes and rolling hillsides. Our plans on where to live changed once we arrived because of deceptive real estate marketing. A problem in Sochi. I don't care what Country someone currently lives in we are all gonna like or dislike some aspects of where we live. For us, we're enjoying it here. I make every effort to tell the truth about what I see and experience wherever I am if asked, ...with respect. Why sugar coat or lie about things? You not only decieve someone else, which can hurt someone mentally, spiritually and even economically, but you also will huurt yourself if you have a concsience. It doesn't mean I'm going to go out and create a bulls-eye on my back or forehead either. So we must all look at what soothes our soul and try finding peace within our environment. As for what to do to gather more video views? Again, look inside yourself and do what your conscience will allow and bring out the truth as you see it, but make sure it is something you enjoy filming. Since you've been in Russia for some time, if it interests you, show the beauty of Russia's diverse nature and it's many large, mid-sized, small and sometimes now desolate villages where life used to be lived and enjoyed. A lot of it can even be done without leaving your home. For free, you can get all the basic information from the internet most times. Wikapedia and many other sources already have short or lengthy articles, maps and photo's. Best of luck as you venture forward.....
Thanks for the nice and informative letter. You beat me here by a little. I arrived in 2001. Sounds like you've been all over since then, but nice to hear you are now in Sochi. I'm in Tambov, which is about 400 kilometers south of Moscow. Not quite the warmer weather you have, but not bad. Very clean oblast. Thanks for the TH-cam advice also. Giving a lot of thought I now think I will have a feature anyhow on my channel called, "Then and Now" or something similar. I was thinking, and it was suggested, that something I bring to the table that others can't is longevity and living through and experiencing the dramatic and rapid changes that have happened here over the past 23 years.
@@americaninrussia absoluetly true about you having lived thru any changes good and bad. Nothing beats experience!!! Me and the wife enjoyed your food videos as well as the others. We enjoy going to the different local markets in Sochi which thei eare quite a few. We're always on the hunt for different great cheeses which keep us entertaining our love of great cheese. Speaking of which the wife is right now in the kitchen shredding some colby, cheddar and mozzarella as our freezer zip baggie is running low on cheese for her quesadilla and my cheese and scrambled egg burrito for tomorrows breakfast. Top them with a small amount of sour cream.
Hi, I am a Russian who has been living in the Netherlands for 30 years. and the most difficult thing is to balance the assessment of situations and life. I don't run blogs or groups because I think my life is full of variety.-) Although for many people such a life in Russia may seem heavenly. BUT... I understand that it is necessary to show the difference with all the pros and cons, because we all learn from each other. And if someone is too narrow in their minds , then this is their personal problem, he-she - they make their lives poorer. Experience is what we pay for in this life, and people like you can, and have the right, to do so by comparing life, situations, -) Good luck and don't give up!

Yes, you are right, there is little honor in flattery. I think the format of video adventures is suitable for you, simple everyday life, even cooking meat can make an interesting adventure.
Thanks for your comment and advice
You know, i was waiting for this. Finally someone who can see what all these youtubers all are about sucking up. I wrote that once in a comment and like 2000 russians jumped on me.😂
Trust me, I had a lot jump on me also. I can only point out things as I see them.
I wish you the best of luck, Mark
Thank you!
Good luck! I wish you and your family the best ❤
Thank you very much!
SUBSCRIBED! This is the first video I see of yours and wow, it’s great. Lots of truth in your vlog. As a small channel creator myself, I often struggle with the direction I want to take my channel. Ultimately, I’ve decided to do what brings joy and excitement to me and hope there are viewers who will delight in my joy and excitement, too. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. You kept my attention for the entire video.
Awesome! Thank you!
Such a critical mind… 👍we have to respect each other… this is only the way to normal life with empathy and respect… I think the more you will describe the difference between us and Americans the more we will start to understand each other… sorry for my English as it’s not my native language
First of all, your English is very good. Respect is so important and also knowing that the ideas and pictures of our countries as presented by our rulers is not always the most accurate picture and our medias do not paint a very accurate picture either. On the individual level we seem to get along fine.
That’s the whole reason I clicked. I was curious about his mini army that doesn’t exist. But I’m willing to give this guy a chance. I’m fascinated with Russia 🇷🇺 so let’s see
Really, sorry to trick you, the army does exist, but at only 1/3 the size. Thanks for giving me a chance though.
Thanks a lot!
I have subscribed and wish you great luck!!! 💪
Thanks for subbing!
