Why German Sounds so Weird in Anime | Linguistic Breakdown of Japanese and German Phonology
Ever wonder why German in Japanese anime sounds like gibberish? In this video we explore the fascinating world of linguistics and learn about why many German names and lyrics sound so weird in Japanese.
In the first part I break down the differences between Japanese and German (and English) sounds and syllables. You'll learn how each language's unique sounds and syllable structure make it tricky to adapt German words into Japanese. Don't worry, I use plenty of examples to make it easy to follow, even if you don't speak Japanese and are not a linguist!
In the second part I take a closer look at three character names from my favourite anime "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" and analyze in detail how these names were adapted from German to Japanese - and why they sound so different.

Hey Emi, I rearly write comments but I like to thank you for the great explanation. As a big anime fan I always wonderd why all animes take my native language and slaughter it to the bone. Now I can understand it very well. Thx a lot you have new abo and a like :)

I think the best of all the names was the chef: lecker! :D still in tears over this name
das war genial. bitte mehr davon :)
Das Video ist super lehrreich und wirkt sehr professionell. Du könntest vielleicht ein wenig mehr Enthusiasmus in Deine Aussprache legen, Dein Duktus wirkt leicht gelangweilt. Aber das ist Meckern auf hohem Niveau und von mir hier nur erwähnt, weil Du nach Feedback gefragt hattest. Wie gesagt, Dein Video ist toll. :)
3:15 what? I dont know the Japanese signs, but "Biete" would be "Biite (ビイテ?)" and "Bitte" would be "Bitte (ビッテ?). What did I miss?
I still think it’s awesome when they speak German in anime
Thank you 😭
great video! people's lack of awareness (not even knowledge) of phonology drives me crazy
As a german, I'd say the pronunciation is actually very good. Take a look at any Frieren TH-cam reactors and find me one English native speaker who can correctly pronounce Äußerst. These people butcher the German names a lot worser than the Japanese voice actors.
Ich finde es absolut toll
because they can't pronounce it.. there you go guys 13 minutes of your life not wasted..
Interesting. I edit and mix dialogue for German dubs of a lot of anime. This video provided real insight and made me appreciate the finer details of Japanese pronounciation of any foreign language words. I simply had no idea but it‘s just logical, as I‘ve observed in how German and English speakers pronounce the different languages around them. Thank you.
I'm bilingual German and English and I'm just learning both Chinese and Japanese and noticed both languages are extremely easy to learn to speak (tho Japanese grammar is feckin weird) but their respective writing systems are absolute nightmares. It sometimes feels like they really wanted to make up for their lack of vowels with a stupid number of characters.
I hope this is not overstepping, but by any chance, were you studying in Düsseldorf?
I just came here to say as a German and every other German watcher of animes I know: we do not watch anime in German and the dubbing industry of animes should stop.
There are a bunch of better German voice actors than English ones.^^ Exceptions prove the rule, of course.
komisch... ist mir noch nie aufgefallen, ist das vielleicht ein du problem?
Believe me English is much worse then German. I look only in japanese and is from another world, hen this 2 langauges. But English voice is much much worse then German.
Funny you say that, for us Germans, English dub sounds very cringe.
Frieren = freezing Eisen = iron Serie = series Kraft = power Sense = scythe Lügner = liar Heiter = (cheerful / but could be resemble a clear Sky) sometimes i think the japanese just like german words.......
It's spoken by the Japanese Question answered.
frieren german dub was peak. y'all high
German people (like myself) mostly love the way japanese pronounce german words especially names like in the anime "monster". "Johann" is peak of pronounciation.
10:17 Comparing the level of emotional excitement that this triggers in me, this was almost as good as Greta Thunberg‘s „How dare you!“ I get easily scaroused: “Yes, Ma‘am! Lecture me some more, please!“ 😊 I watched your recent German-names-in-Japanese-Anime Video first (newly discovering your channel), and thought: she makes for a good Anime character herself! The vibe certainly stuck: I might be watching your other videos with the emotional expectation I would watch Animes. 😊 (Describing yourself as „Polygloddess“ in the channel name, unconsciously might have played some role as well in getting me overly excited.)
I feel like some Germans (I'm German myself) are a bit complaining too much about the names in Frieren. The example I see the most, is the saying that it spoilered Lügner to be a liar. But honestly did the Anime even try to hide that fact? You should already be at full guard once you see Frieren attack Lügner the instant she sees him. And I feel like it gets obvious really quick. I myself see it as an advantage I have other others that don't speak German. You get knowledge of what to expect from a character. But it doesn't necessarily describe them as a whole. I like how the author uses the many meaning the names have for one. For example, you would expect Übel to be, well evil. That is one general translation for Übel. But she isn't really shown to be evil in the show. Übel can mean uncomfortable however. As the expression "Mir ist übel" (engl. "I feel sick"). Which is more accurate for her in my opinion. But that's now what you expect at first when you watch the show ;) There should be more examples, but I think it's clear what I mean.
hehe good explanation, but its not only our language, japans do funny stuff with languages
Let's not forget about "Frau" and Teito "Klein" from Ghost 07 and "Klaus von Reinherz" and "Zapp" Renfro from Kekkai Sensen. The name Zapp could be derived from the weapon that he uses. The onomatopoeia (word that describes a sound) in german for lighting a lighter is literally "zapp"
I say "ich beete (bi:te) ihn' an" and "biete sehr" , so long i and short i, but never i like in English "him" I'm not German but Dutch, but the way you pronounced "bitte" just sounds wrong to me. Where you from?
This was very cool and interesting
Katakana is hell, lol
Im Koreanischen ist es übrigens auch relativ ähnlich. Princeton wird das beispielsweise ein bisschen überspitzt "Pürinsüton" (프린스턴) ausgesprochen
As a german I just couldn't watch the german dub because it simply sounded to weird to have sentences like "Lügner ist ein Lügner" which translates to "Liar is a Liar" 😂
You should watch Attack on Titan to see how they pronounce Bertholdt, its vey funny and almost no fansub can write it right based on the sounds
I really don't know what to say, but the video doesn't make any sense to me. Wouldn't any other language sound just as weird in a Japanese anime if it featured there? If a Japanese person tries to speak English, Spanish or Polish, for example, we would face the same problem. That's simply due to the differences between the languages and not specifically to German. But I thought that was clear? The point is: the anime, or rather the people behind it, have clearly set themselves the task to consciously use German words as a stylistic device. Whether the randomly chosen German words make sense or whether the pronunciation is good or bad is of no concern to us. And that's probably what they thought too.
Yes, obviously other languages with different sound inventories and syllable rules also end up sounding "weird" (accented). I never claimed they wouldn't.
@@emisnikki-polygloddess I appreciate your reply. I didn't want to imply that you were unaware of this. My point was more that the video doesn’t make sense to me because it doesn't truly illustrate a German-specific issue, rather it could be applied to any language placed in Japanese. It feels like the video takes something general and narrows it down to one language, which I found a bit confusing. But maybe I just interpreted the video differently :)
It gets hilarious when they use German in their magic spells. But often words that make no sense at all or are right out stupid. "Kindergarten, Schnitzel, Autobahn" and then something happens.
good video, fun fact, theres a story behind why Krafto ends in -o, when most of the time its an -u- thats inserted to break up illicit syllable structures; I puzzled quite a while about this, I thought maybe it depends on syllable weight, that if the original word contains a diphthong or more than one consonant in coda, the second consonant gets an o, but english "bit" is also adapted as *bitto*, but on the other hand thats two consonants in the Japanese version.... yadda yadda yadda, the actual reason is that t before u becomes ts in Japanese, and that would sound more wrong than just inserting a different vowels for the speaker. I dont know what they would do if a foreign word started with hu- 🤔(spoiler: hula hoop > フラフープ (fura fūpu))
Berlin being rendered as Berurin could be due to them basing the loan off of an older stage of the language when both [r] and [l] would be pronounced. If I remember correctly, the Japanese word for my home city of ''Atene'' was based on the Homeric Greek form of the word A(th)e(long)ne(long again) rather than the Classical Athenai, the modern Athina, or the English Athens. This is also what we would do for our own loans before we stopped bothering.
But then English names don't sound weird in Japanese series or what? Presenting your personal opinion as fact is rubbish.
Did I claim anywhere that English names don't sound weird?
That was very cool, thanks!
actually i love when mangaka use german words in their manga. its like when people translate "water splash" into japanese and use it as an attack name because it sounds cooler. Watching frieren and hearing that the supposedly honest demon is called Lügner (liar) was hilarious. i love frieren.
German translation sounds better than English translation
It's even strange when you are german, watch this in german and all the names are just like descriptions.
You need to watch german dragonball z before you judge, Mädel.
This video is a 10/10
German voice acting is just horrible in general. Only people who praise it are the ones who watch everything in german.
i think german doesn't sound "weird" at all in Anime, Germans are one of the best dub voice actors worldwide.
This video isn't about the German dub of anime at all lol
@@emisnikki-polygloddess i know, but we're on youtube and you wouldn't be wanting to tell me what to comment, right?
Asian cultures in general really enforce social conformity and superficiality for the sake of not stepping on anyone's toes. Something we would correctly identify as "Mitläufertum" in german. Collectivism over individualism. Do what everyone else does, be a normie, don't fall outside the "acceptable" range. Always defer to your elders, no matter how retarded the shit that comes out of their mouths. That just leads to a society of materialistic drones who don't really have many interesting things to talk about except how much money they make or spend on things and how drunk they got with their coworkers after their 16 hour shift because they have no social life outside their workplace. If you ever questioned why anime culture is so ingrained in Japan, it goes perfectly with the consumerism. If you ever ask yourself why the Nikkei hasn't ever properly recovered since the 80's crash, it's because Japan produces a population of extremely skilled workers that have nothing intangible beyond the moment to work FOR, so they fall into mass depression. It's why eastern asian immigrants in western countries are the best performing demographics in any category across the board, because they get to be individuals here and use their energy for goals they deem worth it.
