Tyner Pond Farm is our Holistic Regenerative Farm in Hancock County Indiana. Follow along as we share our mission.
3 Reasons We Unroll Hay On Our Farm
At Tyner Pond Farm, we unroll hay on pasture as part of our commitment to sustainable and regenerative farming practices. In this video, we explain three practical reasons why unrolling hay benefits both our cattle and the land:
Equal Access to Food - Unrolling hay ensures all cattle can eat without crowding or competition.
Soil Health - Leftover hay breaks down over time, adding organic matter and improving soil fertility.
Nutrient Distribution - Manure and hay spread evenly across the field, feeding the soil and supporting future pasture growth.
By using simple, intentional methods like this, we create healthier cows, healthier grass, and healthier soil - all while working with nature, not against it.

Not sure what's going on with the audio. At the start. It's not hard to hear, it's almost impossible.
Ha. Yes. I broke down and bought a microphone now 😊👨🌾
👍 I hope that helps a lot. I must tuck that info away for when my wife & kids finally convince me to make videos
We utilize it as well in coastal California, rather than feeding cattle on low ground that is already plenty fertile, we roll bales down hillsides with less fertile soils. All the benefits that you espouse we hope to see as well over time. Another benefit where we are is that of seeding hillsides where often woody/brushy species have an advantage. Our hay helps to lay out some grass seed with some manure and uneaten hay that will sprout in the rainy season. And the cattle trample down brushy species into sticks as they feed
We have been doing this every winter for years . Low inputs. No tractors or bale grinders. For smaller herds ,you can feed a little less each day,so as cattle will consume as much as possible for their requirements. When temperatures drop we feed more. Thanks. Good information. Vulcan Alberta Canada
Thanks for sharing! It’s really interesting to hear how you’re adapting things in coastal California. We’re working with flat land here in Indiana, so it’s always always fascinating to see how cattle can be used in different environments. The way you’re using hay to seed grass and manage brushy areas is a great idea. It’s cool how similar principles can be applied in so many ways depending on the land. Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
best chickens in the world as far as i'm concerned! thank you!!
Thank you for saying so!
It’s great that you take the time to film and share this. Such a beautiful and perfectly natural thing to watch! As a bird-lover, I have to ask-do you ever see bobolinks on the property? Looks like pretty ideal habitat! Thanks
Excellent no-fuss presentation, thanks for sharing! I deeply appreciate the emphasis on the lower cooking temps of pastured meat. Finishing the bird at around 145-150 really does yield an incredibly juicy and flavorsome bird. Lord bless you all!
thank you!
We just started feeding a mineral with altosid fly stop. Will this have any negative effects on the dung beetles?
We always ask why. In this case why do you need fly control?
We just bought some dung beetles to add to the farm, video coming soon!
I’ve driven buy his place where the hogs are on pasture many times and never new anything about the operation until now. I always figured this operation was low scale but high tech. Good job Greg.
moo
The grass and the cows look healthy. That one last stubborn one, though. 😁 How many head of cattle are in this field?
There about 340 in this group. 😊
That’s interesting! I’ll dig into the idea. Where are you? My understanding has been that Photosynthesis of cool season grasses slow or stop below 40 degrees and they go dormant. This day was 28 degrees. I’ll dig in more. I don’t want to waste a minute if it’s available 😊
On a one day move we prefer to get maximum Photosynthesis before putting into new paddock 🥩 🕊
😊
Can someone please explain it simply to me? I've been binge watching Jaime Elizondo for the past 2 days and understand the why, I'm not clear on the how. Sometimes it seems like forcing animals to feed in a smaller area intensely so everything gets grazed down then moving them to do the same elsewhere. Then sometimes it's not as clear cut as that.
Looks great

The herd look in amazing condition, would you recommend going for a visit?
100%. It’s an inspiration
Beautiful operation they have. I see they don't AI. Their cows
Awesome news!!
We were just looking into local raw milk! I would love this product!
Excellent video Hope more farmers adopt this method!
Thank you!
What type of stocking density are you doing to achieve that kind of trample?
@@tteiger5 when we did this we were moving 4x a day so maybe 500,000 lbs
What brand is your portable corral and load out?
Is there a dry brine you recommend?
Cattle look great, I'd like to see that paddock in 60 days.
Yes me too! I’m excited. I’m going to show another paddock we grazed 60 days aho
You are a man of few words......but great instructional video.😆
Ha! Hate my voice!
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 I understand, the voice I hear when I am talking is very different from the one I hear when listening to myself.
many thanks especially to share the temp. next time do also include a bare spot. OK, hard to find in that paddock.
Yeah. I was going to go onto a soybean field but didn’t want to trespass
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 must not be a neighbour. Somewhere, even waysde, you find a bare spot with soil. I'm now eager to watch the next one. Great video from Alan Savory's farm
I just love the disposition of the south polls. they trot a couple steps out of the trailer and either start walking or sniffing around for something to eat. Usually calves are a little crazy when they come off the trailer and take off running, often through fences and into other people's property. We have a neighbor about two miles away as the crow flies that raises steers on rye grass every year. We usually get one in our herd the first week or so. They have to cross a highway, about three fences and a good sized creek to get to us, haha. And yes he has good fences in good condition, they just a little crazy.
Yes it’s nice that they’ve been conditioned from birth for a system like ours 😊
Now you are making me hungry for grilled steak.😂 Thanks for the grilling tips.
Free Delivery 😊
Can you tell me after slaughter how long are your beef hung in cold storage?
Typically 10 to 14 days
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 thank you for responding and answering my question!
@@crystalmunsell4249 of course! 😊
Thanks for sharing this video
Are they all steers? How many? What's the average weight?
Yes they are all steers. About 500-550lbs
I like the white face. Is that something a south poll owner can control in the herd. I'm really leaning toward getting some of these for my red Angus
You’ll get some random white faces. We love them just the same. We have maybe 3 with horns in this new group
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 every one of them is beautiful.
Would you sell me 3 steers right now? I missed out on getting them from greg this year..
How many acres is your farm. How many head of south poll do you have. Thank you.
Well done. I smoke mine about 25o. The skin turns to rubber. Any suggestions? Thanks
Salt. I do a dry brine a couple of hours on the counter or several hours to overnight in the fridge. And be sure to dry the skin with paper towels 😊. Good luck
Greg Judy needs some rain he is getting rid of too much livestock. He's lucky he has a great following that are eager to buy his stock. Those are great looking calves you were able to purchase from Greg. Are you able to sell the finish beef out of state or are you confined to selling only within your state's borders?
Right now we only sell in Indiana. We’ll looking into experimenting with shipping.
Bottle calfs are work. If you have a good relationship with a small dairy you can have them AI to any bull you choose. They have automatic milk.feeders that work good. I like Jursey crosses I think it's the best beef I've eaten.
Thanks!
I wish i could graze at all without bare ground. Ill get there and its already getting better as i graze. Lots of tall woody forbs with bad plant spacing with no rain and 100+ degrees
Good Luck! Have you read Holistic Management but Allan Savory? I have a video up from one of our visits to his ranch. He transformed a desert with grazing cattle
@tynerpondfarmer6691 yes i have! Oh nice ill have to go find that video i love seeing his stuff, and thankfully i live in a great area rainfall just have started in the past two years after the property over rested for 20-30 years then two bad drought years. Once we get the grasses established and it has some better rain im optimistic it will improve quickly
Nice
Loved the before and after grazing shots!
Thank you. We’ve been very happy with our total grazing this year
Looks like you've been getting rain. We have been getting soaked in New England
Oh my I hear you’ve been getting pounded! Where are you? Our rain has been fair I’d say. We’d appreciate a little more but probably not what you’re experiencing
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 central Massachusetts.
Do you have a cow calf operation, or do you buy in all of your animals?
We buy all our calves and raise & finish on our Grass
@@tynerpondfarmer6691I won't tell anybody smart very smart
@@davidhickenbottom6574 it’s a bit scary as we’re at the mercy of the calf market. We need the right genetics and right now for good grass calves it’s a sellers market right?
Thanks, great to see how you gather them 1st to train them.
Thank you
I think they are protesting leaving. 🤣
They are more excited to get to fresh grass 😊
Thanks for sharing.
I’ve been practicing @totalgrazing for 3 years but with cows and calves. Increased herd numbers, totally eliminated winter hay feeding, but certainly quickly identified unadapted stock even though I’ve been doing MiG for 30 years. In three years, the improvement in soil and grass is astounding. Wish I’d known about this 30 years ago. But my farm is too far away from home to keep up the pace needed to be effective with my small herd (170 pairs), so changes are needed. I’ll be following your progress with total grazing stockers and finishing cattle.
Key points for me
I was thinking "These guys need a bigger trailer". 😀
Yeah it’s a tough decision. A bigger trailer probably means a bigger truck so then I keep doing the math of 2 people every six weeks and new rig might save 2-3 hours. If they made $30 an hour each that saved time is worth $180. They payback on new investment may not pencil out.
@@tynerpondfarmer6691 Yes, that is some tough math. That equals up to $15-1600 a year in savings, probably not going to pay for the truck and trailer. But figure in the sale of one of your current truck/trailer. Then add in the added profit created by them spending that time doing something else instead of hauling.
