Hot Tuna live at the Metroplex ~ Jan 25, 1988 (audio only)
Paul Cornwall's venue, the Metroplex was an Atlanta institution in the 1980s. The original location was on Luckie St. and it featured mostly hardcore punk shows; after moving to a larger space on Marietta St., the club started diversifying into other types of music. On this night in early 1988, the drunk and noisy crowd was treated to a fantastic show by the legendary Hot Tuna!
This one goes out to my old friend Todd Prusin, who does Hot Tuna's website!

Dan Hicks and the Acoustic Warriors ~ The Cotton Club ~ ca 1988 (audio only)
มุมมอง 10621 วันที่ผ่านมา
I have been a huge fan of Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks since the early 1970s but this was my first time seeing Dan in concert, with his new band the Acoustic Warriors. No Lickettes unfortunately but there was an appearance by the Martianettes and Dan played many of my favorites from his back catalog. Dan was one-of-a-kind and I'm so glad I got to see him before his untimely passing in 2016. Enjo...

Uncle Green ~ live at The Cotton Club ~ 1988 (audio only)
มุมมอง 98หลายเดือนก่อน
Uncle Green was one of Atlanta's most popular bands in the mid-late 1980s. They were good friends with Mr. Crowe's Garden and the two bands played on bills together, and got together for bowling nights as well. As a result, our names were constantly confused and people would ask me 'When is Uncle Crowe's Garden playing again?' or 'How are things going with Mr. Green Crowe?" I also remember that...

Atlanta was home to some excellent bands in the 1980s, and Right as Rain was one of the best! The wholesome and charismatic Rick Taylor played guitar and sang lead vocals; James St. James and Bruce Thelkeld were the rock solid bassist and drummer, and Jonny D added impeccably tasteful lead guitar. All four were/are extremely nice guys and supremely talented musicians. (1990s ATL musicians will ...

When Drivin' n Cryin' debuted at a party at the Blue Rat Gallery, everyone was wowed by their fresh new sound. It was definitely punk (in my opinion), but there was a psychedelic influence as well. There were loud and raw songs mixed with quieter folk-influenced ones. Kevn Kinney and multi-instrumentalist/producer Frank French had been recording Kevn's songs in the studio (later to be released ...

Before Drivin' n Cryin', there was The Prosecutors! Yes, Milwaukee gave us more than just PBR and Violent Femmes, as if that wasn't enough! Kevn Kinney fronted the band, and this tape shows that they were a force to be reckoned with. Anyone who knows me won't be surprised that I decided to make it a 'baker's dozen'. This bonus demo comes from a short lived 'super group' called The Ethel Mertz Experience. Keith plays the blistering leads whilst I strum the rhythm chords. I...

Here's a demo tape from a band that needs no introduction, though at the time they weren't well-known outside of Athens, GA. Their manager sent me this tape as I booked Athens bands at the Dugout; he was a nice guy and he wanted to increase their exposure in Atlanta. I was trying to pick up where 688 left off, booking new wave, college rock or whatever it was called at the time, and I think I a...

When I got the go-ahead to book rock bands at the Dugout, one of the first bands I wanted to book was YUR - an acronym for Your Universal Reality if I remember correctly. The band was fronted by Abstract and Kellye Kendrick; they were friends with the hippie scene and played some of the same clubs but I never considered them a jam band. I heard a wide variety of influences in their music, from ...

One glance at the Paralyzers' individual influences makes it easy to see why they were one of my favorite Atlanta bands: British Invasion, West Coast psychedelic, pop/rock radio music, garage rock, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, heavy late 60s rock, and even rockabilly! The multi-talented Dave Weil wrote great songs, played tasteful guitar and sang with a powerful presence. Tim Childress and Paul B...

Hell yeah! Jorma for president!
Hell yeah! Love em'! ! saw him once at Music Midtown and the girls were there. I will post that eventually. He was part of the old SF Scene with the Dead and whatnot. Way to go with the setlist. I like to control.... Hey man will you post a response with an email and then we'll delete it so we can communicate offline? I have technical questions and value your advice.
Thanks! Dan was the man, and Music Midtown was amazing back in the day - I wonder if I was at that show. I saw the Acoustic Warriors again at the Variety Playhouse a few years after this. Yes, it would be great to have your contact info - could you send me a message at my website? It's my name dot com...
Yeah another great Atlanta band that should have got more traction in a world gone mad. You have a great tape vault, man.... I didn't know those ran the Nick. No wonder I liked it so much the only two times I was there. Seeing my besties Nashville Pussy.
Thanks so much - I still have a lot more to share! Yes, they were a super talented band - DB Recs signed the cream of the local crop. The Nick was a fun spot; I enjoyed playing there and drove over to see a few shows as well, including Redd Kross on the Neurotica tour!
Had a blast every time I saw these guys!
Those New Orleans boys know how to party!
Just seeing this today. So awesome. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure - thank you!!
they were really great! saw 'em in nashvegas with... Mr. Crowe's Garden!

It is great to hear them again, and Deacon Lunchbox!
You can’t change people….
Very early in the Johnny era
Wow. Thank you for sharing. When I saw the band opening for The Godfathers @ the Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia, I knew I was seeing the future.
I got to see them at the Fox Theater in Atlanta opening for The Godfathers and Love and Rockets! The Godfathers were awesome - Birth, School, Work, Death!
@@Ted_Selke The Chestnut was a small 700 capacity club and The Godfathers weren’t a big draw. I stood a few feet back stage left. The next time I had the same feeling was Soundgarden at the Trocadero 1,200 capacity and Smashing Pumpkins at Khyber Pass 100 capacity.
How did I miss this band in the 80s
I missed them too - they played the all-ages club circuit.
More punk than what the Crowes ended up sounding like.
Definitely! George Drakoulias gave them a new name and a new sound!
Super re ok
Kicks off with Lemonade Stand, hell yeah! I never knew the early shows included Frank French. Cool!
He is a great guy and he added a lot - he was the original mandolin player!
The other side of the cassette has a (noisy) audience recording that I think is the beginning of the set: Mountain Top, Count the Flowers, Everything Looks Better in the Dark, Legal Gun, Tina's Grocery. There are also some early mixes of tracks from the Everything Looks Better in the Dark album that I might upload if they sound different from the released versions.
Cool tape! There's an excellent recording of that Star Bar show with video no less: th-cam.com/video/WNtfwrmMvVA/w-d-xo.html I was there and it was awesome. The prosecutors set was rockin' but, unfortunately, not on the video. The DNC sets were top shelf because of the song list which was made up of all new material from the four EP's they were releasing. I miss Sadler. Wish they could have kept him.
I was there in 2013 - I forgot that the Prosecutors opened the show! I went the first night; I remember seeing their old guitarist Buren in the audience. There is a video of the Prosecutors set on youtube - that's how I found out (remembered) about the reunion: th-cam.com/video/tkPYVg41yPE/w-d-xo.html
Kind of reminds me of Drivin’N’Cryin’
They were an influence on us. We played shows with them and shared a few members over the years.
Thanks for sharing this one! So many memories. Widespread Panic was probably the very first band I ever shot. I barely knew what I was doing, never got a good white balance and just about melted in the heat but what a great first concert to shoot! I found some footage on line from June 1996 - shaky camera, snap zooms, out of focus and bad white balance... seems about right. I always respected their approach to the music business - it's a great big pie and our little slice is more than sufficient.
I'm so glad you like the tape - thanks for sharing your recollections!
I think the guitar that Richards is playing is now Charlie Starrs. Richard played a 57 (I think) Les Paul Jr and traded it in at an Atlanta guitar shop. Charlie bought it in the early 90's. I think.
I can see where this is going... you're going to have to start a music history channel based on all the recording and stories you have. I don't even remember this band but I great to hear. Another great tape from the archives. Thanks for posting!
Thank you very much - I'm so glad you like the YUR tape! Yes, I still have a lot of interesting tapes to share so please stay tuned!
I had almost forgotten how great a singer Al is!
Is that the black LP Jr that ended up with Charlie Starr?
I like this tight sound ever so slightly punky alt sound...garagey...never liked the hippie vibe thing that lasted for 30 years lol
Thanks - I couldn't agree more! They despised hippies back then!

I saw them so many times! Super great time and completely inspirational!
39:55 on Safari album. Recorded in a bathroom in a building at UNC. The custoidan interrupted.
THANK YOU for posting this! What you have here is a **very important piece** of Dex/Chapel Hill history, all fidelity/speed issues aside. Most of these tracks do not exist elsewhere. Do you have a way to make a high bitrate archival copy for posterity?
Thank you! Yes, I could make a high bitrate copy. I actually corrected the speed on the first track as the tape runs much too fast - I lowered the speed until the guitar was in tune. I boosted the mids and adjusted the volume levels to make them more consistent. On the tape, some tracks are very loud and others are very quiet. Then I ran my DAW noise reduction to bring down the background noise level as it was very loud. I didn't do an individual mastering on each track, so there is probably room for improvement if someone wants to take the time to do that.
@@Ted_Selke You did a fantastic job. I love the sound of this.
@@jude999 Thank you so much!!!
You can say that again!!!
Hell yeah!
The third incarnation of the Mighty Q, I thought Johnny was a natural replacement for Big Al who followed the late, great Steve Ferguson, and the Sun Ra horns was a nice touch. Any live footage of Tommy Ardolino is like gold to me, I think about him and miss him dearly, those old shows at Toad's and the Bottom Line were legendary.
I heard 1,2,3 on the radio yesterday and thought of Tommy's wonderful vocals.
@@Ted_Selke My favorite part of some of their shows was when Tommy would step down and sing a pop song while Terry beat the shit out of his drums. Love this. Cool tape. Saw them at the Hi-Pointe in St. Louis a 2nd floor sliver of a bar in a brick building. Thought it was coming down that night. They were so freaking loud!!! Love their fast rockers but great to hear this early recording of Endeavor - Nice song.

By Big Al's appearance, the photo actually looks like it's from one of the (35th or 38th) reunion shows at the Calvin ... or, ca. 2004/2007?
Yes, I think you're right! I missed those shows unfortunately, though I went to the Wild Weekend a few years before that. I couldn't find a 1993 photo and I didn't want to use a 70s/80s photo so I picked this one to illustrate who was in the band. I forgot about the reunion shows - good eye!
The 2 reunion shows. especially the first one were just the absolute best shows ever.
@@gregfeeney1375 I lived in Northampton for eight years but I got there too late to catch the shows. I did see them with Big Al many times though! And I got to see and meet the Shaggs at their reunion show in North Adams, MA!
wow, fantastic! I saw them the previous July (my first time; had been a fan of the records since '77) in upstate NY at a festival. They opened with 'Rocket #9", Al looked kind of miffed the whole time, Joey was smiling as always, Terry was in wacky fine form, and Tommy's vocal spotlight was "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)"
That's cool that you got to see them with Big Al, and Tommy's vocal spotlight was always a highlight!
Usually the more miffed Al looked the better the show was. I actually talked to him about it once and he said. "you noticed that "
I'm guessing Mr. Crowe grew medicinal herbs in his garden
Dig It! Miigwich!!!
Lordy, I loved them. Thanks, Ted. Hope you're well.
Thanks so much, Eric! I am well and hope you are too!
This is great! you come up with the best tapes! I always thought of Dash Rip Rock as a Georgia band as if they were a part of the Athens scene.
Thank you so much!! I think this might be their second home!
Iread this pic as L-R, unidentified bass player, Rich, Steve and Chris.
Thanks for your comment! It is actually Jeff Sullivan (previous drummer who left to join Drivin' n Cryin'), Rich, Ted Selke (me - bass player) and Chris. Steve played drums on this track but I didn't have a picture with him so I used one from 1987 with Jeff.
Damn fine beginning of a great band...wish we could rewrite a very sad ending... That mighty snare heartbeat should have never stopped! Gorman for Strength! Gorman forever...

@@Ted_Selke The trouble with this show, but the thing that makes it great, is that very few non-Q fans would understand all of the musical jokes that Terry and Al threw in.
