The End of the World
Here's a 1962 country song made famous by singer Skeeter Davis. I think it is a really beautiful melody and I figured I must make a video of playing it the first chance I get so here it is. If as I usually suggest, you have subtitles turned on, you can read about various aspects of what I am doing as I play this piece. Likewise, you should have a pair of decent stereo speakers on your computer. If you listen on a smart phone or other portable device, a good way of getting good sound is to plug the audio output of your device into a car sound system, as generally the sound systems in cars are very good, and that way you'll hear the full range of the instrument to good advantage, and also in stereo which is really important for hearing this stuff correctly. Just please don't watch a video and try to drive at the same time!

      @@HAMMONDGuy-B3X66 Yes, it certainly speaks Ken Griffin in the same sweet tones. I wish you had such videos when you were producing all those great CD's. I am enjoying seeing your interesting playing style which is renewing my enjoyment playing these again and visualising seeing yow you produced the effect of virtually three people playing at once. Back then I pictured you adding pre-played sections in the audio editor and now surprised how little of that you had actually done.

      @@swipewrite As I imagine Ken did, I did a considerable amount of overdubbing on my previous audio CDs, but video is a different ballgame now. The only overdubbing I do now is perhaps playing other instrumental parts, like a celesta or a guitar or saxophone ahead of time, and then the video of the Hammond is real time. I only have two devices at the present that can serve as video cameras, one of which is an iPad which I also use to do my guitar simulations, so obviously I can't use it as a video cam when I'm also using it as a guitar which is why I never show any of my iPad or keyboard playing in the videos. I generally record these ahead of time and then just do pretty much what I did when on a gig with a band, and just play the Hammond along to my previously recorded other instrument sounds. I keep the second camera on a low tripod overlooking the Hammond's pedals so I can use that if I think I might be doing some interesting pedal work. So basically the extra audio sounds (not the Hammond) are overdubs, and the Hammond videos and its audio are real time, so I use every playing trick I know to get it to sound like I have extra hands if it is physically possible!

      Thank you for watching and for your comment. Amen to your opinion of the Hammond sound! In the 1960s I worked for a while as a service tech for several different piano and organ retailers, and the interesting fact that very quickly surfaced was that invariably, for those salesmen who played, regardless of what they sold, they invariably had Hammonds in their homes. Likewise, regarding electronic organs, I got my first Hammond at age 19, and have always had at least one Hammond ever since, and that was in the late 60s. Granted in the 70s and 80s many other brands appeared, and many could make all kinds of sounds that a Hammond could only approximate, but when we look at electronic organs today, many of those other instruments now can't even be given away and are often junked, whereas traditional Hammond consoles, AV, BCV, B2, B3, CV, C2, C3 and A100 all hold their value and often sell for a lot more than they did when they were new.

      Yes indeed, a traditional Hammond is not really an organ as such, but a very fine, somewhat organ-like instrument in its own right. The manner in which it produces tones makes practically all Hammond tonalities sound nice and it seems to blend beautifully with many other instruments as well. Don't worry, I won't stop! This is a fun venture for me, my only regret is that I didn't start sooner, but making these videos requires a lot of time and I really couldn't get into it until after retiring from full time work.

      @@HAMMONDGuy-B3X66 do you use a Leslie as well at times?

    • @HAMMONDGuy-B3X66
      @HAMMONDGuy-B3X66 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RJ-nz5jn Have not owned a real Leslie for at least 20 years, previously I've had 4 different ones, a 251, a 145, and then two 31 H's at different times. After digital effects processing was developed and then later decreased to an affordable price, I started using that for both reverb and to replace tape echo. Eventually, digital effects processing was able to produce both polyphase vibrato and stereo tremolo, which, I found after considerable experimentation, simulated Leslie tremolo very well. Of course audio was mono in older Hammond consoles, and both polyphase vibrato and stereo tremolo require stereo playback, but then real Leslie, while electronically being mono, acoustically produces a virtually infinite number of stereo channels, and required recording with 2 mics in stereo and also stereo playback for good playback sound. Stereo tremolo is exactly that, having two replicas of the audio signal each going through its own independent speaker, but a simple, volume-varying tremolo is applied to each at the same rate but in opposite phase, so when one channel is getting louder, the other is getting quieter. This then creates a resulting composite audio signal that continuously changes both its phase and also its apparent location, both of which are important aspects of real Leslie tremolo. Polyphase vibrato implies having at least two separate audio signals that both receive vibrato, but while one is slightly increasing frequency, the other is decreasing. Both must happen at the same rate, and both must play through separate speakers and mix only as sound waves in the air. This then goes a long way toward replicating the Doppler pitch changes that a real Leslie produces in a room. This can be further enhanced by producing 4 simultaneous signals, and having the vibratos 90 degrees out of phase. Two pairs of signals then go to each of two speakers, and the result is very convincing Leslie tremolo. My primary reason for going this route is because it can be recorded directly from the audio output terminals of the preamps that supply the signals to the power amps and the speakers and I do not need any microphones. Likewise, the speakers can be any ordinary stationary speakers that can handle the power and the frequency range. The resulting electronics is all on a small printed circuit card that can fit in my pocket so it's way easier to move to a gig location than a real Leslie cabinet, and way less expensive. Furthermore, it is infinitely adjustable regarding rate, degree of phase shift between different vibrato channels, and the stereo tremolo creates a very realistic illusion of actual motion, as does a real Leslie. By slowing the rate down to about 40 per minute but running everything non-synchronized, it produces the effect of Leslie chorale, but varies completely randomly, affecting each frequency differently and as such makes a really nice subtle chorus effect that has no definite repetitive variation like Leslie chorale has when the rotors run at 40 RPM to produce chorale. So, you're not hearing a real Leslie on any of my videos, just the simulated effect of a Leslie.

      I am always interested in my viewers' comments, but in this comment are you referring to the drum machine, or to Hammond's percussion? Balancing volume is always tricky especially because viewers have a wide variety of equipment, everything from cell phones to high end PCs or Macs with top of the line sound systems, so sometimes what may sound right on what I use may not sound right on what a viewer uses. I would be most grateful if you'd elaborate more on this comment so I can get an idea of what changes I might investigate. I usually listen to my videos on either a PC with average speakers, a Mac with average speakers, a cell phone using its own speakers, and also plugged into my car's sound system which is OEM, and also on an iPad, through its own speakers and also car sound system. Thanks for the comment. Yes indeed, the first time I discovered the very realistic guitar sounds that are possible using the Garage Band app on an iPad, I figured I absolutely must incorporate this with the Hammond in at least some of what I play. Certainly Ken's occasional use of a live guitar with a Hammond organ yielded some very nice arrangements. I also wanted to do likewise, and when I discovered the iPad guitar simulations I figured, "Now I can do this myself" So while I'm not sure if Ken followed his guitarist, or the guitarist followed Ken or if they both were following Mitch Miller's direction, what i do is most of the time record the audio of the guitar, and then do the video later on where I accompany the previously made guitar solo. I have also done the reverse, that is make the video of the Hammond first and then add the guitar as an additional audio track later, but I enjoy improvising an accompaniment so I think I'll continue playing the guitar part first and then accompanying myself on the Hammond later. Since the iPad is my primary video camera, I can;t make a video of my playing it as a guitar, but maybe eventually, as I learn more about this whole video business I'll either figure it out or get more equipment. Funny, just when I finally mastered making reasonably good audio CDs, now I'm into a whole new endeavor, and this is a lot more complicated.

      Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. This piece has been one of my favorites since the first time I played it when I was part of a dance band many years ago. I notice your TH-cam name is "wersitime." Do you have a Wersi instrument? I've only seen one, but as I recall it was a nice instrument and sounded very good.

    One of my old ttime favourites, especially by Ken Griffin. This is very melodious.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The harmony above the melody I copied from Ken, but whereas he played it on a Wurlitzer electrostatic instrument, I'm using a Hammond so it sound considerably different, and I did not copy the remainder from Ken but it's kind of a composite of seeveral different versions that I have heard. Hope all is going well for you.

    Really a superb arrangement! Key change of diminished 5th is very effective! Love the cymbals. (If you're wondering who this is - I'm Ed Fagen's wife - and am a professional musician.) Lovely work, Eric. 0
