The Nearness of You

  • Here's another perennial favorite, The Nearness of You. Like so many other great standards, this one seems made for the Hammond organ, and here I am using a B3 and a significant amount of simulated Leslie tremolo. It is possible, via digital effects processing, to combine a polyphase vibrato and also a subtle stereo tremolo, where both are synchronized to the same speed, to get a very good simulation of Leslie tremolo. Normally, I am a great fan of Hammond Scanner vibrato, but at 412 pulsations per minute, it seems at times to be a little too fast. We can run simulated Leslie tremolo at a more conservative 375 per minute which in my opinion is significantly better for some music, including this melody. Using digitally simulated Leslie tremolo also allows me to record the audio directly from a preamp and not have to resort to using microphones, which are necessary to record real Leslie tremolo because it is an acoustic effect, added to the sound immediately after it leaves a speaker cone. If you have subtitles turned on while you watch this video, you can follow exactly what I am doing as I play the song regarding key changes, effects in use, and also my occasional use of other instrumental effects along with the B3. By adding other instrumental effects, it makes it possible for me to play the Hammond occasionally in a supporting role rather than always as an exclusive solo instrument. I hope you will enjoy this, and as always, I am most grateful for your watching my videos. The HAMMOND Guy.
