A Foggy Day

  • Here's "A Foggy Day" on a Hammond B3. This is one of the rare times that I am playing this as somewhat of a Jazz piece with some interesting harmony and some improvisation in places.
For simulating vibes, I use an effect known as "Stereo tremolo," so in order to hear the intended effect it is necessary to listen to this in stereo. Fortunately most computer audio systems will play in stereo, however, the "Vibe" effect of the vibes simulation will disappear if you listen to this in mono. Likewise, the accurate simulation of Leslie tremolo depends upon both a polyphase vibrato and the superimposition of a slight degree of stereo tremolo, so it will not sound quite as realistic as intended if you play this in mono. Likewise, the low frequencies of some of the Hammond's bass pedals will not be audible as such on the tiny speakers of cell phones and other portable devices. Best way to listen in that case is to plug the small device audio into the aux input on your car's sound system. Most modern automotive sound systems are very good to excellent and will adequately reproduce the intended effects in my videos.
Via the "Garage Band App" on an iPad, I simulate a guitar for the second chorus, and then via a keyboard, vibes for the final verse, as well as using a drum machine for rhythm for the 2nd and 3rd verses. Also, in verses 2 and 3, I made it seem like I was participating in a small jazz combo. However, in keeping with the advice of a (now deceased) friend who was an excellent Sax and Clarinet man, I try to keep my improvs close enough that as he suggested, "You want your improvisations to be creative, but not so far out that a person who just came into the venue would not almost immediately recognize the song you are playing." And I find that becomes somewhat of a challenge. How do you do a creative improv and still keep it close enough that the tune is always easily recognizable? Anyhow, that's what I am doing here. I hope you enjoy it. As always, I am most grateful to you for watching and following my channel. Thank You!
