Canadian Sunset

  • Here's Canadian Sunset on a Hammond B3. I played this twice, once in F and then again in B. Notice how in this piece the change of key seems to completely change the "personality" of this music, just as it inspired me to make the arrangement in B significantly different from that in F. A key change from F to B is not very typical, because the interval between F and B is a diminished fifth whereas a more typical key change would be perhaps up just a semitone, or maybe a fourth or a fifth or even a major third, but I thought going up a diminished fifth would be a nice key change to try. Let me know in the comments what you think. If you have subtitles turned on, you can follow along in detail all of the things that are going on at any time, such as what key, what effects, and what instrument sounds I have added to make it seem as though in places I was the Hammond player in a small combo.
Also, on this B3, for those of you who like technical stuff, I have cut the drawbar busbars so that the pedal goes independently through a separate matching transformer and even final amplification which means the pedal vibrato can be eliminated entirely because generally vibrato on bass does not really sound very good. This change however has no adverse effect on the basic integrity or playing controls of the Hammond, where as originally designed, vibrato on the pedals is automatically on if it's in use on the lower keyboard, (for suffix -2 or 3 instruments) and likewise on for the entire instrument on an older suffix -V Hammond. This separation likewise allows me to use minimal reverb on pedals which is very beneficial inasmuch as normal reverb on bass tones does not sound good at all.
As always, I would suggest that you listen to this through a good pair of stereo speakers. If you are using a cell phone or other portable device, one good way to hear this properly would be to play it through your car's stereo system as that generally gives good to excellent results with music. But please don't watch any videos while you are driving! As always, thank you for watching, I am most grateful! ~The Hammond Guy~

Thanks for the comment. Yes indeed, the first time I discovered the very realistic guitar sounds that are possible using the Garage Band app on an iPad, I figured I absolutely must incorporate this with the Hammond in at least some of what I play. Certainly Ken's occasional use of a live guitar with a Hammond organ yielded some very nice arrangements. I also wanted to do likewise, and when I discovered the iPad guitar simulations I figured, "Now I can do this myself" So while I'm not sure if Ken followed his guitarist, or the guitarist followed Ken or if they both were following Mitch Miller's direction, what i do is most of the time record the audio of the guitar, and then do the video later on where I accompany the previously made guitar solo. I have also done the reverse, that is make the video of the Hammond first and then add the guitar as an additional audio track later, but I enjoy improvising an accompaniment so I think I'll continue playing the guitar part first and then accompanying myself on the Hammond later. Since the iPad is my primary video camera, I can;t make a video of my playing it as a guitar, but maybe eventually, as I learn more about this whole video business I'll either figure it out or get more equipment. Funny, just when I finally mastered making reasonably good audio CDs, now I'm into a whole new endeavor, and this is a lot more complicated.

Really a superb arrangement! Key change of diminished 5th is very effective! Love the cymbals. (If you're wondering who this is - I'm Ed Fagen's wife - and am a professional musician.) Lovely work, Eric.

Hi Leslie, Thanks so much for the kind words. Of course I remember you! What instrument(s) do you play? Hope you are doing well. I've got quite a few more videos, under the general heading of "The HAMMOND Guy"

Beautiful, could be sweeter with less vibrato. 🎹🎹☮✌
