เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ส.ค. 2017
Hi, my name is Jak. I make videos on silly little Nintendo games. :)
Jakstalgia was originally supposed to be a channel focused on nostalgia (Jak + Nostalgia = Jakstalgia). But, I got bored of that pretty quick and now I'm stuck with this name! So now I do video essays on various video game related topics. I try to upload 1 video a month, but if you take a look at my upload history you'll see I'm very good at sticking to schedules. :)

What Happened to Donkey Kong?
มุมมอง 12K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Donkey Kong is an industry icon. He’s been there from the start, catapulting Nintendo into the legendary status they’re still known for today. But, over the years Donkey Kong’s prominence has faded. What was once a franchise that dominated the Sup...
Game Freak's Forgotten Legacy

To most of the world Game Freak is nothing more than just the Pokémon guys. Known solely for games like Pokémon Red and Blue, and more recently the infamous Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. However, looking back it quickly becomes apparent that they’re so much more than that. Beyond the familiar gyms, and badges lies a treasure trove of games, some of which even venture outside of Nintendo’s ecosyst...

Do N64 Games Need Remakes?
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
During its 1996 release, the Nintendo 64 took the world by storm. It was an absolutely revolutionary console for its time with its cutting edge graphics, controller, and hundreds of groundbreaking titles such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time AND Majora’s Mask, as well as Star Fox 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007 and even Conker’s Bad Fur Day. At Least They Tried..? - Paper Mario: Color Splash
มุมมอง 10K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Just like the Wii U, it’s no secret that Paper Mario Color Splash was a massive disappointment. Its announcement during a 2016 Nintendo Direct was confirmation that the formula established with the N64 original and The Thousand Year Door was truly dead. Paper Mario Sticker Star wasn’t just some one-off experiment like we had hoped, it was the new direction for the series. But, is this truly jus...
The Rise of Modern Sonic
มุมมอง 3.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Back in the early 90s SEGA was on top of the world. The SEGA Genesis had managed to overtake Nintendo’s monopoly on the games industry, thanks in large part to the success of their iconic mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. However, only a few short years later SEGA and Sonic had completely faded into obscurity, which would eventually lead to SEGA dropping out of the console race in 2001 after the Drea...

The Worst Rated Mario Game Ever

From its origins on the N64 to its most recent installment on the Switch with Mario Party Superstars, the Mario Party series has had many ups and downs. Metroid's WEIRD Spinoff Games

The Most Forgettable 3DS Game? - Chibi-Robo Photo Finder Review | Jakstalgia
I disagree that there was nowhere for Paper Mario to go as RPGs. Bug Fables did things like the battle system much better.
Speaking for the Campho Advance, I don't think the Action Replay GBA worked in the NDS GBA slot either (if my memory serves me right) and it didn't require its own power source, and I had an NDS Fat the lite is one of the only Nintendo handhelds Ive never owned along with the GBA Micro and New 2DS XL.
no no.... Mario is also their last names. Hence being called the Mario Brothers. It's Mario Mario, and Luigi Mario. the Mario Bros.! :D
Good grief this was boring.
Too much Nintendo shilling lol
Playing with difficulty mods on Dolphin changed my view of Super Paper Mario a lot. The biggest issue with the gameplay isn't anything fundamental, it's just that it's too easy. (TTYD had this problem too) Even when you just half the EXP you gain, the game becomes considerably more challenging. It's also very fun to avoid using Bowser and just try different Pixls with Mario. For example, you can use Barry like a superguard in TTYD and reflect projectiles. I found bosses like Brobot and Super Dimentio to be extremely fun at this higher difficulty. I'm fully convinced the gameplay just needed a bit of fine tuning. I really consider SPM to be the best in the franchise.
On my replace on the switch remake, my memory was the glitzpit was the longest most tedious part but playing back through it, it didnt seem that bad. Chapter 2 can go fuck itself though
Man, I remember playing every Paper Mario game up to Sticker Star. Even enjoyed them all, too. Hit an economic snag and was never able to pick up Sticker Star. I was keeping an eye out for friends' opinions and online reviews, and it didn't look good. At all. I think if I actually would have had the money to get it, I would have been done with the series. Not even sure how much of it was an exaggeration. It was disappointing. Now Color Splash being Sticker Star 2.0? Great description. Also agree with the rest of your sentiment. I had just beat Lemmy and our toddler broke our wii u game pad. It was an accident, and we found out it was very difficult to get a new game pad. My husband refused to send in his limited edition game pad to be repaired after he had his last special edition one replaced instead of repaired. I was hoping they'd re-release it on a later system, or I'd find a garage sale game pad someday. I enjoyed the heck out of the world building in that game, though. I just can't bring myself to play oragami...mostly because I can't afford it. The 2020s are not treating me kindly, either, and I got a kid to buy games for first.
i'm so thankful to nintendo for remaking ttyd, it became my favourite videogame ever After that i've replayed super paper mario, it was also my first paper mario game and i didnt remember it to be THIS GOOD, the story is crazy for a mario game And just recently i've played stiker star. what was that.
damn it's already been an hour since i've commented and i'm still here
you said an unhealthy amount of time but this is only 2 hours??? wtf man i want my money back oh wait
36:10 VIVIAN YESSSS!!!😁😁😁🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🥳🥳🥳
5:13 According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the “Mario Brothers” alludes to the two brothers’ surname, not the red brother’s first name. That is, their names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. So the “Mario” on the house is their last name, not Mario’s first name. Whether you want to take that seriously or not is up to you.
my biggest pet peeve in paper mario discussion is the notion that the games stopped being RPG's. the only game in the entire series that I'm comfortable not considering an RPG is super paper mario. EXP isn't the defining characteristic of an RPG its not the end all be all of the genre. I argue this especially for origami king because that game has literally everything that makes a turn based RPG a turn based RPG, but just cuz there's no experience points suddenly it's just an action adventure game. despite the fact there is a clear leveling system through the max up hearts anyway. idk it just irks me
It's the developers claiming that they don't want the "newer" Paper Mario trilogy being RPGs, so if anything, that's where this whole debate originates from
Can’t wait for more paper Mario
Ah. A multi hour video essay on something I already know too much about. It's a good day.
Try not being a Scott clone. A literal rip off. Just my critic as a veiwer. First time.
This still hasn’t aged like milk - until a seventh Paper Mario in the vein of the first two that is not perfunctory is made, Paper Mario is still dead, and TTYD remake is more the proof that the dad abandoned us for nobler reasons than we would assume.
Namely, that the dad went on a business trip, was caught up in war, and literally could not think about returning to his family until things were clearer and the place he was stuck in was safe enough. (the metaphor being that the Paper Mario series is held hostage by some weird mandates).
This is good content. Great video, youre actually pretty funny.
Lol Mario's name is on the house because, surprisingly, Mario is the brothers last name 😂
Reference to the 1993 Live Action Mario Bros movie with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo and Dennis Hooper as Koopa
Yes the algorithm finally figured out what I live for.
Couldnt resist being the 1000th view.
Very infuriating that IS seems to do the exact opposite of the critism of super. Where people jated the huge gameplay change and loved the characters and worlds. To only toads and now u gotta do a fkkn slide puzzle for combat.
Super is deffinatly top 3 paper mario games. Just comming off TTYD the gameplay shift was alittle dissapointing. Probabably the best storywise. Ive personally played up to sticker star
Sticker star i got and was excited for but its kinda just eh. I liked collecting things but there is very little id call "memorable" from the game
damn, yet another paper mario video trashing on sticker star. nothing will change. edit: just saw your other videos thumbnails, holy shit you really are a paper mario fan!
Why didn’t Nintendo make a cartridge of this game
"critics at the time loved this thing" .... critics are paid to kiss ass.... so....
Super Paper Mario was fire. I retried it last year and while the platforming is boring and very basic, the rest is absolutely top notch. Origami King was sadly 200x a time waster than SPM, what a waste man...
This has always been a weird point to me. The platforming is like, 90% of Super. Regardless of whether or not it has a good story (which it does), the rest of the thing is a slog to get through. Sorry, but I do believe that...
@@Danominator I replayed it a few weeks ago and was shocked at how poorly it holds up, even if I remember not having that good a time with it. It's so chronically unfun and the very-occasional story cutaways don't really help, that's still a LOT to get through to get to a reasonably good climax.
@@Ah0yKatie ngl I wasn't able to afford a lot of games when I was younger, so I watched all the cutscenes for this on TH-cam a few years after it came out. Everybody had told me how good it was so I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Years later I actually got to play the thing and the experience was a heck of a lot worse. Weird perspective maybe, but Super Paper Mario is much more fun to watch than it is to play.
I owned paper mario n64 growing up and to this day it’s still in my top 3 favorite games of all time
I’m guessing #2 is Super Paper Mario and #1 is Thousand Year Door?
@ to be honest I hadn’t actually heard about Super Paper Mario until I watched this video! From what I’ve seen Super Paper Mario doesn’t feel like a Paper Mario game in my opinion, it reminds me personally of a modern-day Super Mario 64 but with a Paper Mario theme. I feel like that’s why some people hate it, but looking at it objectively as its own game and not a sequel, it looks super fun to me and I’m keeping my eye open for a good deal on a switch. I also didn’t know they remade the Thousand Year Door for the switch until I saw it at target this morning! I haven’t played it since it came out on GameCube. I THINK if I listed my top 3 games of all time based on good memories, nostalgia, and how it replays today In no particular order would be; the OG Paper Mario, Boarderlands 1 or 2, and the call of duty MW2 from 2009. How about yourself? Do you have a top 3?
5:00 I can confirm. Kirby was pissed. That's why they could only get him to do spin offs on Gamecube.
No one Kirby looked mad on the cover of the game.

The game boy game hideo kojima made was him telling everyone to touch grass. And its a shame it wasnt more popular
2:46 Hay I graduated high school that year
In comparison to the previous generation of Gameboy it was advanced. You going to cry?????
Update: Skip was dissolved in circa 2020.
Noone: Nintendo in 1981: mmm Monkee.
My first was a Wonderful Life. Awesome game! Just wish you had better marriage choices. First you find out (in a heart event) Celia is going to have an arranged marriage (she never leaves so I assume it's Marlin) so she is off limits. Then you have Muffy who's idea of flirty makes her out to be some 304 looking for a sugar daddy; also invalid. Nami... wins by default. Her looks are her best qualities. Second best is her honesty; you know what you are getting from the get go. Then, in special edition, you have 14 year old Lumina. If we go by Japan's cannon age (which was removed in international) for our character she is the only one YOUNGER than our character. Who dies at the end...
Though, years later I did play the DS version. I had nothing but my DS and no PC releases. It was fun. Even level 3 crops meant I no longer had to worry about cash (up to level 99). Imagine spending 30g for strawberry seeds, getting 8 plants and selling each strawberry for 270g. Then... for my first time ever having new strawberries grow on the same plant! Sunshine Islands were great, could choose my gender. Crop levels disappeared; a tragic loss. Tale of two Towns was great... fatigue was setting in so it was more meh...
Though... to this day I still haven't bought a Story of Season title. It is almost universally consoles and I just don't have the cash to shell out for both new console and one game.
Hey bro great video! I’ll subscribe, seems chill. Very funny also 👍
10:37 was that a child with a teen?
oh and that's another importnat point to remember , the publisher for the harvest moon games changed after save the homeland , that's why we never got another harvest moon game like that best one....
the life sim genre is BEGGING for a stardew valley, being a sims player is rough lately
back to nature is the perfect one. save the homeland is way too easy and I dislike it.. one year.. and then time reset.. one year... and 'wonderful life'.. total boring.. they cut half the content for 'friends of mineral town' and it just is a shallow experience. even with 'friends of mineral town' all that does is make 'wonderful life' what it should have been and so it was only a small consolation.
This game need more love
Mofo are you one of those special needs people
Hot take : sticker star is underhated
I have almost every mainline Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons game except the GB/GBC games, Tree of Tranquility, Island of Happiness, and Pioneers of Olive Town (because it sucks).
