Into the Whirlpool is the first of what presumably be a series of engagement-level offerings showing focused portions of much larger battles that occurred during the American Civil War. Aspects of both miniatures and conventional board gaming are blended together to breathe life into this first example, focused on The Wheatfield, one small part of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Hi Ray! Thank you so much for the sub. More videos coming…. - Paul
As you foresaw Paul 😀 great to see the game getting more coverage with your channel 👏
Thanks Nick! I still feel bad that I posted the wrong video, but you guys caught it and I fixed it. I read your comments! Thx. - Paul
@theoakenknight1748 fingers crossed you have some more time with the game. It's my 11 year old lads and my favourite 😍
Nice.
Thanks!
Hello! I was wondering on how to get in touch with you to talk about my upcoming second edition of Albuera?
Hello, you got me. How may I help you? If you like, you can email me at my personal account at pjtrandel@yahoo.com. Thanks!! 😊 - Paul
The front box art has an umm.... unfortunate... depiction of a man...
Did you not go for the False Prophet expansion as well as the update pack?
Hey Nick. Coming soon to a TH-cam channel near you! - Paul
@theoakenknight1748 great news Paul. Really enjoy your content mate
So happy to see the updated version on your channel 😊
I aim to please, Nick! Thanks for commenting. - Paul
Enjoyed your video and found the upgraded graphics quality was great (once you tell TH-cam not to show it in 360p). I like the look of this game but wonder about replayability. It seems kinda small, like too zoomed in, in you know what I mean. I think I would prefer something with more units and maneuver. Not necessarily an entire battle (take too long) but something with greater scope than Into the Whirlpool.
Hmmmm. Now I have to figure out how to tell TH-cam not to show at 360p. Sounds like a TH-cam moment to me…. - P
Wow! Very nice review! Seriously considering this game! Thank you. 😊
Most excellent! You are most welcome! - Paul
Yikes
Did you see the third guy from the left on 3rd Arkansas?. Thats my great grand pappy!
I’ll say hey to great grandpa when I continue the video! - Paul
Thanks Paul! Terrific overview of the game.
Thanks Hermann. More coming. I really want to show the game playing at a normal pace so guys understand that it can play “snappy”. I’m also going to put in a plug for upgrading the next games to a more “deluxe” format with mounted and larger maps. And oh, would I like to see some real minis (see “rally round the flag” from Lost Battalion for idea, conveniently shown on a TH-cam channel near you!). Great job taking ACW gaming in a new direction. - Paul
Great work!
Thank you Whitney! - Paul
Great video. Well done. I hope I can get my 68 year old head around the rules when my copy is delivered tomorrow. I have never been a fan of earlier GMT rule books as they have always made them text heavy. This does look quite interesting.....almost a dog fight management sim. Again, thank you for a great play through. Any advice on how I should start learning the rules? I would like to know how you learnt it.
Hello Mr Dice! Well…, my 67 year old head managed it okay…, so hope does indeed spring eternal! Actually, this game is different than most others, as the rules are organized to lead you through play (almost) from the minute you open the box. Just be careful that you correctly apply the stickers to the right cubes and you should be in the air defending the Fatherland in no time. For most games: 1) read the rules, skim the scenario book, and designers notes, 2) pick a scenario and struggle through it, making all kinds of mistakes, and 3) re-read the rules and discover all the stuff I did wrong. At this point I am usually competent to play and even shoot a video for you guys. Enjoy. - Paul
This game is fascinating to me, Thanks for making this video!
No problems, Mr Strategery! - Paul
great job
:^)
Whew I thought you quit! (Your one of my favs.)
Hey Phalanx! No such luck…, I’m still here. Sometimes I am sidetracked with “honeydo” items, or wood projects. This time I decided go dig out one of the monster games I’ve been collecting and learn how to play. Thunder in the East is still set up under the 2nd level of my table. My problem now is that my wife wants a cabinet like I just did for my saw blades for her hobby stuff. I’m retired, but somehow I’m busier than ever, which I guess is a good thing. Stay tuned…, I’m ramping up on a play demo video for “Whirlpool” coming soon to a TH-cam channel near you. - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 honey do this and honey do that? That's why I went back to work after retiring at 55. My wife was worse than a FedEx supervisor . Did you ever go to Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain battlefield?...they have a cool diorama of the battle. Also I drove through Gettysburg.
Hey Paul! Hope all is well! Thanks so much for this terrific overview. I appreciate the kind comments. I don't know if I have the most number of different ACW series but I may have the record for the most games that cover some portion of Gettysburg! 😆 I really like Blue Panther's production quality and Alex Zatarain's artwork and I appreciate their hard work on this project. Thanks again and hope you enjoy it!
Hey Hermann! And made in ‘merica is awesome sauce! I’ll be following up with a play demo video so the good folks at Blue Panther get their moneys worth out of me. Tell them that my almost 70 year old eyes really appreciate the 12 point type font in the rule book. - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 Ha! That was Ryan Heilman's handiwork ... we both agreed that we needed to get that book as legible as possible and he did a great job laying it out.
I am pleased with mine. I ordered the version with the canvas map. It will still need some plexi or clamps to lay flat but maybe over time it will stretch out. One of my counter sheets was heavily misaligned so the numbers were "lost" when punched. That was quickly replaced by the publisher when I sent them a photo (GREAT SERVICE!). One minor thing is the box size I received is slightly too small to fit a standard counter tray. I tried several brands. Not the end of the world. Baggies or half counter trays (or maybe trimmed trays--I haven't tried that) can work but just an observation. I do like that they made the box thick to fit all your stuff, 2 copies of the play aids, & easily legible cards!!
Hi Jim. I have everything punched but have not yet stored the counters. I was hoping to use a counter tray but sounds like it’s time to pull out my snack-sized baggies instead. Glad to hear Blue Panther helped you out, and also hopefully they get better at counter alignment. I’ll be pushing counters tomorrow, so a play demo video won’t be too far behind. Thanks for commenting! - Paul
I received my copy about three weeks ago, i was truly intrigued by the concept. I have to say after dabbling with it a bit i can say with confidence that i cant wait fir the next game
Hello Patrick. Me too, and most likely it will be even more polished. Take care…. - Paul
Great playthrough. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you sir…. Take a look at my Holland ‘44 series if you want more. Cheers! -Paul
44:50 - For a Determined Defense, you only use one or the other of the TQ and Armor Rating modifiers, never both. Also, the Armor Rating Comparison is only available if the Lead Unit is a tank and it can only help the defender, never hurt them.
30:38 - You don't get the TQ shift for this attack because the Ranger Bn. isn't part of the MAF.
OMG Mr Asynchrony! You get the award in the “most comments on a video” category. 🤩. Most Excellent! - Paul
38:50 - The tank unit has to take the hit since it provided a shift.
35:40 - A1/D2 also allows the opposing player to choose the losses.
8:29 - A slight correction - Mechanized units can enter Flooded hexes as long as they are entering via a road.
Great video. Very informative.
1:05:00 - When a defender is eliminated but the Determined Defense was successful, the attacker can only make a Limited Advance (i.e. only into the vacated hex).
46:54 - The German auto-victory conditions for cadre losses apply to all scenarios, not just the full campaign.
29:40 - Strategic Movement markers can only be placed on mechanized units, so the bicycle units cannot use strategic movement. Now what can do is put a truck marker on them, which gives makes them move like a mechanized unit with 5 MP, then give them an SM marker and they can move 10 hexes.
14:27 - For an S2 result, you only get to bank one airborne replacement. The second step is permanently lost. (20.2.2)
These are very cool. I really enjoy the both the Warfighter and Leader series of games. Just ordered 6 of each. Thank you for the heads up and review!
No problems, Mr Easy! My guess is that you will want more than 6 once you get them. - Paul
Like this game. Interesting and fun
Hi Lawrence! I also like it because I can remember most of the rules, so I can just pick it up and play after setting it down for a while. A low barrier to having fun!! - Paul
I lost my play book. I left the box at my gaming club and the only thing I can't find is the stupid playbook. Why they didn't include it as one book is beyond me. The publisher is of no help either.
Just bought it. Getting it tomorrow. I'm sooo excited!!
Hey Herb! Yup I have a tracking number for my 2nd edition upgrade kit and other goodies. Looking forward to it, too! - Paul
I really love your relaxing intro music.
Hello Felip! I like the music too, although when I first started I was told a few times that I had it run too long and too loud. But I adjusted and think it is all good at this point. Thanks for commenting. - Paul
My game just arrived and the Movement Cost sheet for Pike says: “1/3 MP ROAD TO ROAD, IGNORE TERRAIN IN HEX IF INFANTRY IN COLUMN, MOUNTED CAVALRY, LIMBERED ARTILLERY.” So perhaps the designers already changed this.
Hi John. I know they were talking about it, so I’m not surprised. Thanks for the update! - Paul
I feel like Norm MacDonald is teaching me TRC. I like that a lot.
Hey Mr Tar Nation…. First time I’ve ever been compared to a dead comedian! Good.., I guess. - Paul
Well done
I 15:35 really like the round chits for activation: easier to differentiate between two units.
Hey Mr War! The Vassal module works great as well. Played this one remote with a gaming bud with no issues. I like this one. -Paul
Another great and informative video. Particularly helpful to hear your comparison of Skies vs Storm. Really seems like no reason to own both. And if choosing between one, then Skies maybe the better choice… Does seem perhaps a bit puzzling as to why Storm was designed and released even though by all accounts a great standalone game by a well-regarded designer… Thanks for the video. Great channel
Thanks for the kind words JJ. Puzzling to me too… one of the mysteries of the universe! - Paul
Great video. Entertaining. Easy to follow. Really helpful re: understanding the rules and what gameplay is like. Thanks! 👍
Great game, great designer! Thanks JJ. - Paul
Units with tiny dots are motorized, units with ovals in center of counter are armored/tracked vehicles.
Hello! Just wandering how you now feel about the game? Do you play regularly, do you still play it at all? Always interested in hindsight views? I have the ‘all-in’ on the second printing coming any day now and can’t decide whether to keep this or sell on? It looks like a real ‘love letter’ to old school D&D but does it still hold up against more modern games… or will it end up on my pile of shame…
Hello Mr Flipz! No I have not played lately; I’ve been doing my Gettysburg thing which is always a good thing for me. But the v2 upgrade is coming out soon and I expect to revisit once I have it. - Paul
Nice review, thank you for that :-) Please make sure to use living rule version 1.4, we added some clarifications and a couple nice details after getting a lot of great feedback from gamers all over the world.
Hello. I very much appreciate your comment on my review. I’ll take a look at v1.4, but I very much hope for an expanded (extended example of play) and sanitized v2.0 with your next game in the series. The guys at Hexasim took 3 game releases to get their “Eagles” system stable, so if you can do it in two that would be great! A most excellent first release and some thought-provoking ideas. - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 Hello Paul, you are totally right. I think the effort we make and having already version 1.4 (which will soon be released officially and will be the final verion) shows how seriously we take the demand for some clarifications and also, many gamers asked for more detail (like the supporting offensive role of Horse Artillery). We will also include an extended example of play. It should NOT take us 2 or 3 games to have a waterproof system. My goal is to have that done with 1.4 of Eylau.
I agree the game heavily favours the axis in the 41' scenario. However, the Soviets are much stronger in 42 (more tanks, a fighter and a bomber). With that airpower the Soviets can attack exposed tanks without having to risk their own tanks and artillery, effectively delaying the Germans. The Chineese are also much stronger in 42 compared to 41, having double the amount of infantry if I recall correctly. Overall the 42 scenario is fairly balanced, perhaps the allies could use a small bid (one inf in Egypt and India, for example).
For fun, I’m thinking of trying: 1) Allow the US and UK to transfer up to 10% of their production to the Soviets as lend-lease. 2) Japan and USSR do not begin the game at war. a) Japan may not declare war until China is defeated. b) USSR may not declare war until after Germany is defeated. What do you think? - Paul
@@theoakenknight1748 Assuming you mean the 41 scenario, I dont think it will be enough to balance the game. Especially point 2 b would help Japan, as it can go all in on China/India and not worry about an exposed Manchuria. I think giving Britain 1 inf in Egypt (to prevent Egypt falling turn 1), 1 inf or artillery in India (to contest the Japanese) and 1 Chineese inf in Wuhan could be enough. Perhaps even add 1 Soviet unit in Moscow (artillery or tank), to give Russia something to fight back with on turn 1.
