OMORI: how the unconscious boils to the surface
I don't think the father is actually disfigured. I think his hideousness is how he perceives himself truly. The face in the mirrors is the facade, something he wants to perpetuate, he is obsessed with himself after all.
28:26 The Nightmare/The Moment of Clarity is one of the most interesting chapters in the entire game. The “vision” that we see after the Princess takes off her mask is supposed to be a representation of her “heart,” in the final confrontation with the shifting mound she will make the following arguement: “There are a few things more terrifying than one's own heart, and there is almost nothing more terrifying than sharing it with another. But the most terrifying thing of all is to leave one's heart unshared.” From that, we can infer that by her heart she means her true self. She hid her face behind a mask knowing that you would be horrified by what she is. She thus decided to not show that part of herself. The vision in it of itself is essentially supposed to represent the “worst” part of The Shifting Mound, the pain, death, and despair, shown as an endless cycle of death and rebirth, showing the impermanence of human life, all of which happen because of her existence. It is worth noting that the Narrator gives up at the end of the monologue, as he was confronted with his worst nightmare which is why he “broke” as the princess puts it. I believe that The Nightmare/Moment of Clarity is supposed to represent the way we hide the worst part of us from others. The Nightmare is characterized by her loneliness, which is caused by the thought that others will only see a monster in her. This point is emphasized by the single tear that streams down her face as she takes off her mask, showing how she did not wish to show her true self. If you bring The Nightmare as a vessel to The Shifting Mound in The Long Quiet she will make this comment about her: “This one is filled with sadness. A doll abandoned to the company of her darkest impulses. She desires only companionship, but the only thing she knows is how to hurt.” When you chose that you will still not let her out of her cage she then pulls down her mask, deciding to show the parts of herself she wished to hide, so that she could hurt you through the revelation of what she truly is, thus her stating “I am what I am and you’re always going to be a coward”. In “Chapter 3” (If we can call it that) her mask is shattered and then breaks, she shows you the worst parts of her so she has nothing to hide anymore, and she accepts what she is. Once you bring The Moment of Clarity to The Shifting Mound she will make this comment about her: “This one is a waiting maw. An inevitable destination where all roads end.” - Death. This route is definitely one of the most interesting, and there are a lot of interpretations that can be inferred from it, this is how I personally interpret it
Oh btw, this does not mean that I think that The Nightmare *literally* knows her nature as The Shifting Mound (as The Shifting Mound herself does not know until she is fully complete), just that it's meant to symbolize hiding the worst parts of yourself, and that the game does that through The Shifting Mound

I don't have a computer and watched gameplay😢
Probably off topic (+ I didn't see all of your videos) It's interesting that, on the last day of the hikikomori route, the headspace gets invaded by the variants of "SOMETHING". And they all have female names that are constructed in a similar way to Mari. I remember getting jumpscared by one of them when trying to explore the bridge.
hi! i liked this video a lot, and i'd like to add on another more meta interpretation of happily ever after that wasn't in there. this interpretation is that of playing a video game, (in this case, slay the princess), over and over again until it loses its meaning, and you learn to move on. i heard that the devs had this interpretation in mind when designing the route, which would explain why the chapter is called "epilogue" instead of "chapter 3", as it is meant to be an epilogue to the game as a whole. it certainly isn't the first thing you'd think of playing the route, but it's worth considering in my opinion. once again, great video!
@@wentriy thank you!
I found it interesting that one of the characters connected to "The Truth" is called "Daddy Longlegs". While I know it came from something completely unrelated and it's totally unintentional from the author, I can't stop thinking of the fact that in my language we say (literally) "lies have short legs" (iirc, in English you say "lies don't travel far"). And the mentioned character literally got long legs.
@@Fictional_Evidence That’s very interesting! I always thought about it as Daddy Longlegs having a wide scope, so to say. That, with his long legs, he’s able to metaphorically stand on every edge of the web of sunny’s mind, and therefore sees the big picture.
@@DetectiveMar Afaik, the name came from a spider that is named that way. Well, everything fits neatly. Sunny is afraid of spiders and part of the truth was originally hidden in the forest of spiders. And, to get there, the player has to find a hidden pathway.

BACKROOMS VIDEO LET'S GOOOOOO Note: the Omori music paired with the dead mall subject and photos makes for a spot on atmosphere 👌 well done Good Sir After watch notes: Yet another fascinating video! Love it to pieces. A few things I wanted to mention. The Steven King novel/later miniseries adaptation The Langoliers had liminality in it, but before "liminality" was really a concept in the general(?) public's mind like it is now. Basically after an emergency landing of a late night flight, the characters find there is no one else around, the clocks are stopped and the electricity doesn't work for some reason. I should read the original story and rewatch the miniseries as an older person now that I think about it. I remember it fascinating me when I watched it before. But anyway, another work of media with liminality explored! Another thought. That'll require a bit of a backstory Early last year, I had watched a YT video documentary on the case of a missing hiker in the eastern US forests. She took a wrong turn while going off trail to use the restroom and become lost. The rescue was long and relentless, and it took a long time to finally locate her. Sadly, they were all too late and the woman had passed away. A tragic story and one that shows the importance of safety measures and NEVER underestimating nature. May she rest in peace. There is a reason I bring up this specific story now however. A comment under the video mentioned that forests are also a liminal space. The conversation furthermore discussed the possibility that this is WHY liminality is such an uncanny and horrifying thing to us as a species: it's something in our deepest cognitive spaces left behind by our ancestors. By witnessing ourselves the dangers of these specific spaces and passing down that wisdom as well as the typical process of natural selection weeding out certain traits, we have now come to equate liminality with danger. It might not be the actual reason, but I thought it interesting and worth a mention to the discussion as it would really help explain that deep seated yet inexplicable uneasiness we get with environments like say, a dead mall. Aside from the explanation and discussions within the video itself that is :D
Oh thanks! I always wonder how much effort to put into those aspects of the video, so it's nice to see someone take notice :)

I'm the weird one who has played a decent amount of Super Paper Mario, and not Undertale. That one is still on the bucket list.
FIRST!
This is a really good video but there are a few things inaccuracies. Like vincent jumping off the roof of the builiding instead of a bridge and the toxin that is injected into mother is a chemical called ice 9 which is connected to felix as both are based off the book cats cradle by kurt vonnegut.
dude, what a good video, just the thing i was searching for
@@PhiffinZzzz Glad you enjoyed it!
Suoer paper mario may also give big hints to the true story of deltarune, as its already about a dark prochecy and the destruction of the world. The funniest thing about the similarities between mimi and muffet, is muffet was a kickstarter backer character, so it literally can not be intentional on toby's behalf.
Not that theory I have a kind of a similar theory, but slightly different and like your theory Very good man the idea of Carl losing some parts of her personality he and the part of her brain that controls empathy. Yeah I have a similar to that. Well it’s slightly different but still. 😊 Well done, I tip my hat to you

I was looking for a different Super Paper Mario when I found this. I don't even remember what it was anymore, and i don't care. This is the best, and i can never possibly thank you enough for this amazing video
Detective, i haven't gotten past the intro yet so i can still day this. I love your voice. That is all.
Sorry to be late to the party! But I cant help but notice at 13:40 you used the "Smooth Deltarune Opening" animation by ShadowAOD, I don't think theres any malice behind it but you might want to credit them in the description of the video.
We all can’t forget about the Natasia fight in the Super Paper Mario Genocide route. Really wild of them to let her throw the player around through her super hypnosis. Dodging everything until she finally gets too sleepy herself.
I need someone to mod this into both games now
This is the game Nintendo tried to gas light us into believing that nobody cared about its story
Thank you for making this video. There’s no way Toby didn’t draw at least SOME inspiration from SPM while making Undertale.
What if the i'm sorry in black space isn't Sunny's apology, but the last thing mari managed to say before she died?
If you're referring to the words under the bed in the deepest parts of Black Space, then yes. That's what I think it is. Pretty sure that's what I say in the video too.
Quick explanation of chara: Chara is just tired of our shit and just started judging us and Question us why we did Genocide real.
who the heck gave toby a wii
Almost half a year late, but seriously, this is some high quality content here. I know most of the philosophy comes from the game itself rather than you but it's still extremely interesting to watch. The part that I liked the most was how you seemingly made a surface analysis of the Parasites ending only to expand more on it once you made the analogy with humanity.
Asgore isn't truely evil thoguh, and is hesitent about the whole revenge aspect, unlike Bleck.
Count Bleck is more resigned & feels like it MUST happen, he doesn't like it near the end but he feels like there's nothing he can do (his plot is way eviler than Asgore's I'll give you that)
I’VE ALWAYS BEEN SAYING THIS
Finally someone points this out! I remember playing both games as a kid and noticing so many parallels
I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY- Undertale leans more into player choice and meta-commentary on video game mechanics, but both games have similar tones, themes, and senses of humor. SPM was one of my earliest, formative RPGs, so it makes sense why Undertale grabbed me in the same way. Also. It's Deltarune, but. Spamton G Spamton became my favorite fictional character overnight, and when I realized that he shared the same charismatic trickster archetype as Dimentio, my all-time favorite villain, even down to betraying the main character for a heart-shaped object of unlimited power, I have never recovered. Curse my affinity for mages and/or merchants who will suddenly but inevitably betray me...
Literally I remember talking about this so many years ago about how these two games are literally the same, it’s funny to see this topic talked about again
I remember YEARS ago there was either this Google Plus or TH-cam community post with a pic of Bowser, the Mario Bros, and the hearts, and someone in the comments was like "UNDERTALE!!! <3" and the replies to that person were basically "stop, you're being cringe" Well look where we are now! XD
12:52 The difference is that Alphys wants to help you and you're doing a favor for Undyne while Francis kidnaps Tippi, even renames her and tries to GET with Peach. He even says that you're trying to steal "Francine" away from him.
You’ve heard of Adventures where the first friendly people you meet’s names are puns on words that provide information of some kind, who have at some point been in a relationship with who seems to be the final boss, but they’re actually only the penultimate bosses, as some normal lookin guy yoinks the powerful heart(s) and turns into a monstrosity and begins kicking your ass up until numerous hearts of various different colors surround it, making it vulnerable. Both adventures include a Final boss who yoinks at least one of your friends in order to become their strongest. There’s also spider girls and nerdy lizards who watch anime and have robots But get ready for An adventure where the the main protagonist is pretty silent and wields a knife and used to be in a small group of friends that included at least two sets of siblings, of which said group had a little sibling within it who’s older brother, who’s away at college, has their side of their shared room decorated with many awards whilst the little sibling has hardly any, and said friend group fell apart after the older sister within the group isn’t around anymore, eventually leading into the events of the game where you swap between the entirely real world and some sort of different world that takes inspiration from real things/characters for its characters, where the main protagonist travels alongside their friends who’s skin and hair are not their regular colors and they wear different clothing. (By the way if there are any similarities i failed to mention in the Undertale/spm section of my comment, that’s because I didn’t watch the video.)
Omori be like:
12:39 They also love money. Muffit loves Gold and Mimi loves Rubies. That's also another thing about them.
Maybe that's why Super Paper Mario and Undertale are my two favorite games.
Of all time?
@NickMario1 Probably yeah.
More into thousand year door.

Thankfully Undertale has better gameplay
Lol.
one, i want to say that starting with sans when listing the characters as they stand in the final scene absolutely tricked me into thinking you meant "sans" as in "without" until you continued to list characters who were very clearly present two, i always liked to imagine the pure hearts as representative of different forms of love rather than necessarily specific traits. like, in luvbi's case, it would be representative of familial love!! three, you're so right and the similarities to something as widely loved as undertale are honestly why i continue to say super paper mario was ahead of its time. ooh girl if you released in 2015 the public would've loved you
