who the heck gave toby a wii
Almost half a year late, but seriously, this is some high quality content here. I know most of the philosophy comes from the game itself rather than you but it's still extremely interesting to watch. The part that I liked the most was how you seemingly made a surface analysis of the Parasites ending only to expand more on it once you made the analogy with humanity.
Asgore isn't truely evil thoguh, and is hesitent about the whole revenge aspect, unlike Bleck.
Count Bleck is more resigned & feels like it MUST happen, he doesn't like it near the end but he feels like there's nothing he can do (his plot is way eviler than Asgore's I'll give you that)
I’VE ALWAYS BEEN SAYING THIS
Finally someone points this out! I remember playing both games as a kid and noticing so many parallels
I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY- Undertale leans more into player choice and meta-commentary on video game mechanics, but both games have similar tones, themes, and senses of humor. SPM was one of my earliest, formative RPGs, so it makes sense why Undertale grabbed me in the same way. Also. It's Deltarune, but. Spamton G Spamton became my favorite fictional character overnight, and when I realized that he shared the same charismatic trickster archetype as Dimentio, my all-time favorite villain, even down to betraying the main character for a heart-shaped object of unlimited power, I have never recovered. Curse my affinity for mages and/or merchants who will suddenly but inevitably betray me...
Literally I remember talking about this so many years ago about how these two games are literally the same, it’s funny to see this topic talked about again
I remember YEARS ago there was either this Google Plus or TH-cam community post with a pic of Bowser, the Mario Bros, and the hearts, and someone in the comments was like "UNDERTALE!!! <3" and the replies to that person were basically "stop, you're being cringe" Well look where we are now! XD
12:52 The difference is that Alphys wants to help you and you're doing a favor for Undyne while Francis kidnaps Tippi, even renames her and tries to GET with Peach. He even says that you're trying to steal "Francine" away from him.
You’ve heard of Adventures where the first friendly people you meet’s names are puns on words that provide information of some kind, who have at some point been in a relationship with who seems to be the final boss, but they’re actually only the penultimate bosses, as some normal lookin guy yoinks the powerful heart(s) and turns into a monstrosity and begins kicking your ass up until numerous hearts of various different colors surround it, making it vulnerable. Both adventures include a Final boss who yoinks at least one of your friends in order to become their strongest. There’s also spider girls and nerdy lizards who watch anime and have robots But get ready for An adventure where the the main protagonist is pretty silent and wields a knife and used to be in a small group of friends that included at least two sets of siblings, of which said group had a little sibling within it who’s older brother, who’s away at college, has their side of their shared room decorated with many awards whilst the little sibling has hardly any, and said friend group fell apart after the older sister within the group isn’t around anymore, eventually leading into the events of the game where you swap between the entirely real world and some sort of different world that takes inspiration from real things/characters for its characters, where the main protagonist travels alongside their friends who’s skin and hair are not their regular colors and they wear different clothing. (By the way if there are any similarities i failed to mention in the Undertale/spm section of my comment, that’s because I didn’t watch the video.)
Omori be like:
12:39 They also love money. Muffit loves Gold and Mimi loves Rubies. That's also another thing about them.
Maybe that's why Super Paper Mario and Undertale are my two favorite games.
Of all time?
@NickMario1 Probably yeah.
More into thousand year door.
I pray that nobody thinks of making a “Super Paper Mario” Undertale AU
There’s a meme from a while back that sums this up perfectly, ever since then I’ve wanted someone to take a deep dive into the subject
Thankfully Undertale has better gameplay
Lol.
one, i want to say that starting with sans when listing the characters as they stand in the final scene absolutely tricked me into thinking you meant "sans" as in "without" until you continued to list characters who were very clearly present two, i always liked to imagine the pure hearts as representative of different forms of love rather than necessarily specific traits. like, in luvbi's case, it would be representative of familial love!! three, you're so right and the similarities to something as widely loved as undertale are honestly why i continue to say super paper mario was ahead of its time. ooh girl if you released in 2015 the public would've loved you
yeah? that just clicked?
Chara does have some pretty strong associations with the devil. Notably, "first to fall" and "fallen angel" are both accurate descriptions of Chara and are also descriptive of the Christian Satan mythology. Chara doesn't kill Flowey unprompted. They wait for our input, unlike with Sans or Asgore who they kill unprompted. You can sit in front of Flowey forever and Chara will wait, but as soon as you press a button it's over for him. Notably: it's also over for you, the player. That, specifically, is the point of no return. If you reset before killing Flowey, even though Asgore and Sans died, all is forgiven. You can go through and get a true pacifist ending and everything is fine. The moment you hit a button, however, even before Flowey is fully destroyed, it's over. If you reset, even before the swing lands, you're still locked into the genocide ending and cannot get the world back without losing your soul. "If Chara wasn't inherently evil it would make no sense for them to gain power..." Sans spells it out over the various judgments and Chara says it. Chara isn't "inherently evil", but they're a soulless being like Flowey. Over the course of the route, you the player teach them to kill enemies and become strong. ("I realized the purpose of my reincarnation. Power.") They become strong not because of some inherent moral nature, but because they're the one absorbing the EXP from slain monsters ("Every time a number increases, that feeling... That's me.") and that EXP allows them to more easily distance themself from the personhood and lives of the monsters they're killing, becoming more efficient at it. They're accomplishing a task, not committing mass murder--at least, by the end. Now, that IS evil but it doesn't have to be that way. Why does Chara not appear at the end of True Pacifist? Probably because the Chara we see in Genocide is taking over Frisk's body (see: the "stay with Toriel" ending of Soulless Pacifist where Chara jumpscares us again) and in True Pacifist, they allow Frisk to live their life without being consumed. The reason they show up in genocide is because they completely consume Frisk. In true pacifist, they have no desire to dominate others because we, the players, have given them no reason to do so. Absent our guidance, they have no such desire: They are not inherently evil. Which is not to say Chara is somehow inherently good, either. They're a demon, but in an amoral sense not an evil sense. They're not really alive, they're just a spirit haunting Frisk. They have no particular personal drive for good or evil during the majority of the game, no matter what route you're on, they're simply observing and reporting what they see to us through the narration. They mostly don't make moral judgments toward us or our choices. However, there's one notable exception: If you do the genocide route, then do it again Chara chastises you. They say we (the player) and they are "not the same". They say they can't understand why we would do what we're doing, that "This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling", that we are "wracked with a perverted sentimentality". They go on to tell us "I cannot understand these feelings any more" and also "Should you choose to create this world once more. Another path would be better suited." Why do they suddenly get judgy here, of all places? They're being powered by Frisk's SOUL. They're no longer soulless, they're developing feelings of their own and they don't like seeing us continue to destroy the world. Chara can no longer understand our feelings when we decide to destroy the world again because, now that they have a (stolen) soul of their own, they see there is no point in causing needless suffering. Instead, they tell us to do something else. I won't comment on Chara's actions while they were alive but i could. This comment is long enough as-is but the short version is i'm much more on the "chara defense squad" side of things. Chara is amoral and can be evil, but only after we convince them to be. They have some sociopathic (aka, now antisocial personality disorder) traits, but they're perfectly happy in a True Pacifist run where you are at most a jerk to people. (For what it's worth, Asriel has some (very subtle) characterization suggesting he was a bit sociopathic while alive, too.) Regarding why Chara was brought back: I strongly suspect they were brought back because we, the player, called their name. Asriel asks if Chara returned because they heard him calling their name but that's probably not it. But someone else does call their name immediately before they appear: us. We name them. They explicitly say in genocide that "Your power awakened me from death." That could be Frisk's power, but i don't think that's just the soul color aligning (though i do think Chara was also a red soul and high-Determination while alive). Chara also describes themself as "The demon that comes when people call its name" in the double genocide ending, which fits with us awakening them by "calling their name" on the name screen. I also want to point out that even in the True Pacifist run, Chara is incredibly powerful. They are not as "alive" as they are in the genocide (and particularly double genocide) ending, but they are still active and powerful in that run. As evidence, Flowey's speech at the end begging Chara to not reset the world and to (instead) let Frisk live their life. Whether Flowey is speaking to Chara or to us, the player, through Chara it is ultimately through Chara that we can reset the world. After genocide, we cannot reset the game without Chara's permission. The reset power and the save/load power are both probably Chara's power. They could decide to reset the world. They simply choose to wait and do whatever we want them to, unless we've done genocide but not yet handed over our (Frisk's) SOUL.
surprised you didn't make the connection of the coud walkway housing most of Sunny's abandoned fantasies and imaginary friends being a nod to him "always having his head in the clouds"
Tbh it feels like Toby was inspired by the Mario RPGs in general
he was, hed admitted to it
@ Yeah, I could tell
Asgore carries a pitchfork/trident, is a goat, has flame magic, and rules the underground. He is such a satanic archetype. But he's also a complete subversion of that. He LOOKS like a generic evil character, but he isn't. He's just a misguided person who knows they're doing something bad, but they're too weak and self-loathing to stop themselves. He doesn't want to defeat the good guy. He wants to be defeated.

All of the Mario rpgs seemed to have influenced undertale and Deltarune in some way. Jevil and Dimentio are purple jesters so obsessed with chaos they would kill their friends for it. Spamton and fawful are very similar. Muffet and Mimi are both spider girls. Queen and princess shroob both have the same flying throne. The combat system in Deltarune is very reminiciant of Mario & Luigi. Shadow Queen and gaster have a similar vibe I could go on and on about this for days
If knight is who I think it will be, that will be a funny paralell with Mario and Luigi Brothership even if the knight probably was came up with before.
