Some of the footage from our epic Jones Island camping and shrimping trip, this was our last pot on day 3 that sent us home! I’ve got lots more footage to crunch through… I’m also considering doing a live stream tomorrow to share footage from all the shrimping trips this year, talk about what we learned and take any questions you might have.

Incredible STEELHEAD Adventure - MAJESTIC Scenery of the Sauk River!
มุมมอง 753หลายเดือนก่อน
We floated the Sauk River and part of the Skagit River with guide Cary Hoffman of CNH Guide Service. I've made a decent amount of videos, but this is one of my favorites, the scenery was majestic and the fish we connected with were electric. I tried to reveal the wonder of this place and the experience of fishing it with good company (and lots of laughs). On a serious note: The Skagit / Sauk ar...

Caught my biggest steelhead ever under govt bridge. Love that river
That’s awesome man! There’s still a few big ones swimming around!
Can I get the tuna oil at outdoor emporium?
I’ve been looking at Sportco and can’t find it. Here’s a link to get it on Amazon: amzn.to/49c17TO
Definitely gonna watch this at least twice, whole lotta information! I checked the regs but just thought I'd double check that nothing is stopping me from showing up for first drop a couple hours early to get my pot in first?
If it’s a 9-1 opener you can’t drop the first pot until 9am…
Were you fishing Area 10 today? I thought I saw you headed back to the marina at the same time as us. We had a good day fishing just south of Pt Edwards. Lots and lots of resident coho and a brute of a chinook that we released after an epic fight.
Nope! Yeah I’ve heard it’s been pretty good! Gonna fish it next week. Gotta love those chinook encounters in June out there!
What app are you using?
Navionics
@@PNWBestLife thank you!
Area 11 ain't south sound bro.. love the videos tho been a fan since the beginning 👍
Thanks! Where do your draw the line for South Sound?
@@PNWBestLife South of narrows bridge
GM, r u going to Elliott Bay next wk?
Nope! Gotta to get my son from college. Good luck shrimping!
How deep were you jigging here?
That was around 180 ft
@PNWBestLife wow that's deeper than anyone I've heard of jigging at around there. Nice fish. Trying out a few 130g puget pounders this weekend
Thanks! Jigging is so much fun! I did it some yesterday too, but we only picked up flounders
@@PNWBestLife see any kings landed out there? Going out Saturday
I saw 2 caught…very slow yesterday
Can you see shrimps on a sonar and what does it look like ? By the way I have lots from your videos.
Thanks! I show a picture of it and talk about this topic midway through the video
Dang missed the live :/
Jump on and comment or ask a question, let’s keep it shrimpy 😎
Cool! Did it just let go?
Yup! Full footage on my livestream
It's funny to me that this happens so often that Washington law specifies you can legally take octopus caught like this.
Haha nice! We don’t eat them but I could see it.
2023?
Fixed it, thanks!
Always amazed how you have to tell people over and over again, to "reel". Fish do not come to the boat on their own.
😂 true!
Thank you for the very informative video. From a friend in fishing. Ernest
Thank you! 🙏
Where do you get your bait cages? Where can I order them?
Take a look at these as an online option: amzn.to/4aweIX0
Hah! I was out there too. After we were done, we passed by the Seabeck boat ramp for free entertainment.
😂 that’s so funny! They call it misery point for a reason!
the pleasure harbor boat ramp took us 3hours to get our boat out of the water on Saturday.
Yeah that boat ramp is a complete cluster. We grabbed our limits and got back as fast as we could cause we watched it on Friday and it was a total mess.
Just sat at the boat ramp for a couple hours before launch, and watched the mayhem. Free entertainment. Then got our 6 limits and got out the water
Awesome! Shrimping was good!
Hood Canal was popping off. Had some friends out there and did very well. Looks like you did, too!
Yessir!
Thank you for your helpful tips on putting the odds in my favor to catch a winter steelhead! From a friend in fishing. Ernest
You’re very welcome! Thanks for the encouragement!
Great stuff!
Thanks you! 🙏
Where did u catch.
Hood canal!
Can you share what part? I was there as well and wasn't as lucky. (DABOB Bay)
Near Pleasant Harbor. They were being caught all over though. Even near me some weren’t catching. You had to be doing the right stuff with your bait.
That is over a thousand dollars in my area right there. At $36 per pound you just hit the jackpot!
Wow, hadn’t thought of it like that!
damn, nice job!
Thanks!!!
noice
Yes!!! 🙌
Dang I was out by Vashon and got 0..... good job enjoy
Dude MA10 and 11 was brutal yesterday!
@PNWBestLife Yea that wind was bad at the end we got soaked!
Ultimate guide! Yes it is. Man great job for not making click bait haha. You hit all the topics. We live up on whidbey and are gearing up for the opener on the 16th. Can't wait!
Thanks Rizzo! I will be hitting the opener on the 16th and Hood Canal on 17-18!
Darn I don't have a boat.
Yeah, gotta have a boat or a friend!
Never caught a salmon with my own techniques or without people setting everything up, yesterday I went out with a rooster tail on the local river and got slammed on my 2nd cast! Fish came off in about 10 seconds but it’s nice know I can catch now I just have to get out more.
Yes! Anything to increase confidence! You gotta get out when the coho salmon are running though, can be incredible when they hit it!
Skagit river is hot
😂
Both on a bead?!
Yup!
Definitely used the brick idea
Awesome!
@@PNWBestLifeis a 1.5lbs grappling hook anchor good enough to try to keep pots from sliding on slopes if my traps are also weighted?
That depends on the severity of the slope and the currents at the time. If you are targeting gradual slopes during the right amount of current it shoild be good enough.
@@PNWBestLife are the 3 steel ring door basket style traps considered fast or slow fishing style traps? The kind you pull bottom of basket closed and wrap cord around top to keep it closed
@@PNWBestLife spray painted my main line with blue spray paint 20' feet from end trap so I know where to put anchor and another 20 feet up is a second blue mark for the second trap. That way I've always got them in the right place when setting
Awesome stuff, I'll catch one of your live feeds someday! Thanks for putting all this together. I'm very intimidated by bar crossings, as I've never done it, and trying to figure it out by reading about it or watching YT really worries me (particularly when I have kids on board). So Westport/Ilwaco really seems out of reach for me without absolutely ideal conditions until I get a feel for things.
Thanks for watching! Have you read my article on Marine Weather Safety? Maybe we can try to plan a trip one day or at least feel free to chat with me on trip planning advice
@@PNWBestLife Oh yeah, your site is bookmarked and I reference it for a lot. I've read that article more than once. I'd love a chance to hit the water with you (or someone that knows the bar at Westport) to show me what they are looking for, avoiding, dangers, etc. Really appreciate you, Kyle.
For sure! Hit me up on email: kyle@pnwbestlife.com or IG DM and I would love to figure out a time that works.
where are you guys fishing in washington?
I don’t share river names out of respect for those who fish it unless it’s a well known spot
lol big one buddy
😂
Nice catch bro
Thank you!
Nice fish man i went bass fishin today and caught a 7 lb
Always a good time!
Awesome job, Kyle. Great information. Thank you. Please keep these coming!
Thank you 🙏 will do!
Hi Kyle, California has closed salmon season for a second year in a row and I am thinking about going up to Washington or Alaska to fish for salmon. On a troll here we typically use rods with line class 12-25 or 12-30lb. Is that the same type of rods you use up there? I am buying a phenix REDEYE travel rod with that line class so I can bring it on the airplane with a shimano tekota 600 line counter reel. What are your thoughts?
I’m not familiar with the rod you mentioned, but the line ratings sound right. I use a 10’6 Okuma MH I think it’s rated 15-30. Good reel as well. Thanks for watching!
love your videos, simple clean straight to the point no spam or misleading stuff keep it up
Thank you! 🙏
Right on. Thanks, your video inspired me to do a couple things. I want to get out there, encounter God and catch some salmon for the most part.
Love it man! We are so blessed to be able to experience all that the PNW has to offer!
i wanna go with you to westport!
It’s tons of fun! 🤩
Great video but let’s keep river names out :)
I usually do that. But there is no open season on the river right now, which is why I waited to post it.
Love your content , as always. Appreciate the link to the Smithsonian article! I'm a local with deep roots and always super interested in local history, especially about our fisheries. Keep up the advocacy for our fish, their habitat, and our fisheries.
Thank you sir!
“You can take the fisherman out of the Tilton, but not the Tilton out of the fisherman” -Kyle
Haha yes!
Nice video and nice content! Can you consider remove the background music? It is unnecessary and distracting. The sound from nature and fishmen's talk are what every fishman wants to hear.
Interesting! Thanks for the feedback. I spend a fair amount of time on the music so it would be a win/win if people felt that way…
What is the best stuff to use in April is it a soft plastic and what kind or what bait can you recommend me to somthing in Westport Washington for rockfish
Honestly you can’t go wrong with the soft practices or a shrimp fly of some sort. These fish aren’t that picky.
@@PNWBestLife but last year in the summer I was getting my limes with soft plastic fish but. In April I’m not getting any bite you think it how I jiggle it
We just limited last time we were out there. No need to do anything but drop it down to their faces. I’m convinced that if you’re marking fish on the screen that you think are rockfish but not biting…those aren’t rockfish. Move to a new school and you will get bit.
@@PNWBestLife what if your not on a boat I’m fishing form the pier on float 8 what do you recommend form their
Then I think it’s more of a question of are the fish there or not vs getting them to bite! Though if you are really desperate, get some sand shrimp and put one under a bobber and anything will bite it, so you can see what you’re working with.
Single action reels are for fun only. Expect to lose fish because you can't keep up with them when they run at you, line gets slack and the barbless hook falls out
I think this is somewhat true! I do think that if you can get a solid initial hookup and you have a breakaway flasher that trips, fish lost with slack line is greatly reduced. But your margin for error is greatly reduced on a single action reel for sure!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I'm gearing up to go shrimping my for my first time during the early opener in May. Haha I've studied this video at least 10 times by now, so thank you! I've got one question for you: If I'm dropping my pot shallow around 150-250ft of water and I'm rigged with 400ft of leaded line, what would you recommend doing with the slack? Should I tie it off to the buoy or should I not worry about the extra line? Thanks again!
Awesome! Don’t worry a second about the slack. It will just sit on the floor and wait for you to pull it up!
@@PNWBestLife thanks dude! That’s what I was hoping to hear. I was unsure if the current would drag the buoy and rope out too far. the last thing I want to do is tangle someone’s gear. Gonna give Bainbridge a shot on the 16th! Thanks again!
So you do have to worry about buoy distance from your pot based on wind and current, but so does everyone else. And that’s true whether you are dripping in 250 or 150 ft. I show in that video how to plan your pot drop based on that, but I wouldn’t worry about downsizing your amount of rope per pot. Also, Bainbrodge near Eagle Harbor in 2023 was really slim pickings!
@@PNWBestLife got it! Yes, I’ve watched that section a few times and I’m going to be cautious and keep all that in mind. It was surprising at first how the pots should line up but it’s all clicking now. Thank you so much!!
@@PNWBestLife also thanks for the heads up about location. Any other suggestions for area 9-10?
I wish I saw this before I went out for my 1st time: raining, I didn't know the holes far from the break were shrimp. Came home with nothing. Most of these razor videos are people bragging. This one is real. It might be fun if you bring some home. Otherwise it's a lot of work and time for nothing.
Yessir! Thanks for this comment! We try hard to provide real info on the process not just glory shots of the end result! Let’s chat some more if you want more help being successful next time you go out!
