EPIC Neah Bay Fishing ONE Day Turn and Burn - Salmon and Bottomfish June 2023

  • My crew and I spent one night in Sekiu to fish Marine Area 4 / Neah Bay for one day of EPIC Fishing on big chinook salmon and bottomfish, hooking them all day in shallow water around the many rock piles and reefs of the upper Washington coastline.
    We hooked many quality chinook salmon amidst hooking coho salmon, black rockfish, yellowtail rockfish and ling cod, but we lost several of those nice king salmon in heartbreaking fashion.
    We debated what we could have done differently: Was it our gear? Am I ready to give up on the mooching reels? Was it our technique of fighting big chinook? Or was it just bad luck? The debate rages on in our post fishing trip text threads!
    Any fishing trip to Neah Bay / Sekiu area is already epic just by being out there, in the most beautiful of waters. This trip was no exception and we hope you get that vibe as you watch our video.

    Did a few hours of trolling at Neah Bay this week and thanks to a lot of your videos, we hooked a couple salmon! No kings and no keepers, just wild coho released. Appreciate all the time you take to share your content with us, it makes a difference.

      @PNWBestLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thanks for sharing that! Yeah, it seems the catch rate and even encounters on chinook haven’t been great so far. While we lost a bunch of fish, it seems like the number we hooked has not been what most have experienced even folks following the exact same program so 🤷‍♂️

    Some days are just that way. Who hasn't had one of those days? I believe it is more a function of how the fish is striking the lure and where the hook embeds in it's mouth. A hook set inside the gum line has a less chance of releasing than one outside the gum line. And a hook set outside the gum line is more likely to be torn out of the mouth under a lot of pressure. That is why I use a relatively loose drag and am experimenting with using snubbers on my flashers the last year or so. Just my thought. Nice video, and good luck.

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bill! Yeah, that's kind of what I think about it as well...I like a tight drag initially to make sure that hook buries, and after that I usually like to back it off a bit. I want that fish to run away from me and tire itself out! I don't like the heavy pressure situation where it's just sitting there head shaking side to side. I associate prolonged moments of that action to losing fish.

    Love the channel, quick question. When you do a turn burn trip like that are you driving up that morning with the boat and returning that night with the boat, or do you already have the boat up there, or are you going up the day before and sleeping in the truck? I’m looking to go up there and make trip and I’d just like to see what other people do. Maybe where they put in also?

    Once I showed my Alaska fishing guide on the Kenai River how to sharpen his hooks we stopped losing fish.

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree a sharp hook is an important part of the process, however, usually this shows up as not converting downrigger bites that pop the clip to sold hookups. In this case, our hooks were laser sharp, and solidly hooked up, but getting off eventually due to the ability for fish to twist around the spoon. I've largely eliminated this by adding a barrel swivel.
      I actually don't sharpen my hooked anymore unless I really don't want to re-tie something. Hooks are cheap, I generally throw away dull hooks and replace with brand new ones. You will never get a hook as sharp as it comes out of the package. Replace hooks often!

    I think many trollers assume the fish gets a good hook set once it strikes. I have always given it a good hook set once I feel the fish. Since we have the barbless hook rule, I try to get a good hard hook set to bury it further if I can. I use 40# braid w/a 30# leader line and have never broken anything from setting the hook or pulled one from the fish’s mouth. I haven’t had many just pop off since I’ve been doing that. Give it a try.

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a great point! Chinook have incredibly hard jaws, and when I fish em in the freshwater I really set it hard vs thinking they hooked themselves because the downrigger clip popped and we reeled down.
      Definitely gonna try this in the future!

      @PNWBestLife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chrispiontek510 I've been convinced that the best barbless hooks are the sickle siwash from Gamakatsu, but I think they need a little help on a spoon. I've modified my spoons to have a barrel swivel / split ring between the spoon and the hook, and I'm going to change up a few things related to the hookset off the downrigger and drag while fighting the fish to see if that helps. I definitely plan to share later in the chinook season my results and what I've learned, stay tuned!

Been fishing for 15 yrs at Sekiu, and miss it horribly, cause I sold my 24ft searunner being from Spokane and daughter going to UW. Fished Port Hardy many times using those knucklebuster reels and would suggest having your guests always work on keeping that rod tip high, not pointing towards fish. Single action reels are for fun only. Expect to lose fish because you can't keep up with them when they run at you, line gets slack and the barbless hook falls out

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think this is somewhat true! I do think that if you can get a solid initial hookup and you have a breakaway flasher that trips, fish lost with slack line is greatly reduced. But your margin for error is greatly reduced on a single action reel for sure!

  • @Elparquito
    @Elparquito ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Didn't see what you're using, but losing fish on spoons is pretty common....unless you're using a larger commercial trolling spoon. Usually don't lose too many fish on a double 4/0 ace hi or squid rig.

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree strongly with this. We were spooning it, and you’re right very few fish lost on hoochie / AHF double hook rig. I’m gonna make some changes to my spoons, will share how or if that changes things in terms of hook to land.

    • @Elparquito
      @Elparquito ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PNWBestLife I've done the offset siwash (bend the hook), sickle siwash, etc. Nothing really helps. I actually do not like running spoons....can't tell you how many times I've lost fish peeling away from the boat, etc. Not to mention you get to deal with shakers galore. I've tried breakaway flashers to no avail. I'd look in to the bigger half gold/half silver trolling spoons out there or run a 5" Tomic 602 plug. Those work well and the large 4/0 siwash seems to stick quite well....as it kinda is gaffing them with a spoon. Good luck out there! For Puget Sound (MA10), it's all about the Green UV ace hi and pair of 4/0's. That catches everything and rarely do you lose fish on them.

    • @PNWBestLife
      @PNWBestLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great observations! Yeah, I use hoochies and ace high fly’s for Puget sound interior MA10, 11 and 13 quite a bit. But it’s soo easy to hook the ocean chinook on spoons! I’ve got a friend who combines the breakaway flashers with the barrel swivel / split ring on the spoon hook and is doing really well not losing fish. I run 4/0 hooks at least on all my spoons already. I’m gonna try the barrel swivel and see how that goes

    Yeah could have been not hooked very deep. If I hook one that’s solid I slow down right away. When they are hot and the boats moving it causes a lot of violent head shaking that can pop the hook or even break the line at an anchovy teaser head. It also causes you to move further away from the fish while pulling it up near the surface way behind the boat which is not ideal.

    • @PNWBestLife

Whenever this has happened whether braid, mono or flouro, the risk of line breakage goes way up
