Shaw was a college dropout living in Europe doing the bohemian life style off his parents money before the Civil War.
Montgomery was an American hero and actually did more for abolition than Shaw. He formed black regiments in Kansas. His fighting style was guerrilla. The Kansas-Missouri theater of war was brutal with no prisoners taken. These rebel guerrillas would sometimes prey on on even pro confederate people. The extreme Union solution was to move the populace by burning down towns in the troubled areas. This attitude was considered barbaric by people from the Eastern United States.
It was when Wesley said as you Wish I will join your regiment. Robert knew it was love.
I notice you cut short the part where the Sargent Major talked about the thousands of white boys died for you, he knew cause he dug the graves
I look forward to every Sunday reaction to this great season of FARGO!
Ed & Peggy are surprisingly capable in a pinch.
in the 70s in england, shops had signs in the windows... "no blacks, no dogs, no irish."
Great reaction. I love when he tries to block the doors with a bench, when they open the other way.
yall have said it every episode already but this season is so fucking good
Yeah... Really weird that after being knocked out cold, law enforcement just skeedaddled and left Peggy alone at home with Dodd and two dead bodies. I never twigged that ...error when _I_ originally watched it.
A possible sequel would be the boy hiring a private detective to find the man that killed his father. I would start with the friends that the boy showed his knife to because maybe he didn't lose it, maybe one of them took it.
Something that younger people might not realize is that glasses used to be made of glass and were very heavy compared to the plastic ones we have today.
By the 1863, repeating rifles had been developed and were being distributed to some Federal forces. But there were not enough for everyone and by far most units still had the muzzle loading single shot rifles you see here. Even revolvers were mostly for officers only. Cavalry units seemed to get revolvers and repeating carbines before the infantry. I don't know for sure, but I believe it was because a muzzle loader was way too cumbersome to reload while on horseback.
A real thing about Civil War movies is that there are Civil War re-enactor clubs all over the US and they often volunteer to be extras in these movies. The film producers love these guys because they bring their own wardrobe and props, and even have a reasonable idea of how to act like they are dying in combat.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Denzel Washington won An Academy Award For Best Supporting Actor
Hollywood is bad on uniforms for this period. The sashes, leg trim and base rank colors are Red for Artillery, Yellow for Calvary and Blue for infantry. They love to use Calvary ranks on officers but here a big mistake is the red belt sashes, the contrast looks good on film but they should be the same lighter blue you see with the Sgt. stripes the trainer had. Good film overall but the best history in this genre (though a later war) also done by Turner is TNT Rough Riders. I encourage watching it a second time with the commentary as several things came together perfectly that should not have been possible. Like the two canon of only 6 made for the war in the film or the topo match in TX to the San Juan Heights to inches. Also those Springfield riffles were not used as they should have been. Had they trained marksmanship instead of fast loading they would have been at least 3 times as deadly. I have seen some who can shoot a quarter at a thousand yards with one, within range more accurate than many modern sniper guns. The Minnie ball and Civil war riffles while less powerful induces greater spin allowing a sharp shooter to out perform any full metal jacket round within its range. The modern guns range is at least 3X as far however.
Could you guys watch "Cadence" (1990), Charlie and Martin Sheen. Feat. Laurence Fishburne.
You mention you didn't see Bob Morton as good or evil. Well if you look for the clues in the beginning of the movie, Bob Morton had placed candidates in the Detroit Police force as Robocop candidates. He's the reason Murphy was assigned the position that got him killed.
This is in my top 5 movies of all time for sure. It's a fantastic film
You two really need to watch the movie 'Gettysburg.' It will leave you with an intense Civil War mindset. It is sort of strange for me, since although I was born and raised in New York, my maternal ancestry goes back to the Louisiana Militia, helping to form the U.S. (similar to what was illustrated in the movie 'The Patriot' (which by the way is a somewhat true story), up through fighting for the North in 'The War Between the States' (which is the only way my ancestors from the Southern U.S. will characterize it. There is no doubt in my mind however, that I would have joined the Union if I was a young man living in the time of the Civil War, even know I might be fighting some of my family (which did happen to numerous families during that war).
"Every person that's shown is important" *sound of lawn mower begins*
Wow
The highest fatality rate by rank in the Civil War were the colonels.
I love your civil war knowledge great reaction
He won Oscar for this movie as well. Denzel Washington
Easier to have great set when actual land is real battle grounds.
Denzel got his first Oscar for this.
The whipping scene in the movie was very powerful. However to point out that the US Army outlawed flogging of soldiers in 1861. The practice was on its way out in the army during the war of 1812 as the consensus among the army was that the practice was counterproductive. The scene takes place several years after flogging was outlawed. It is still a powerful scene.
That was a great reaction from both of you. I wanted to mention that the flogging scene, while very powerful and well executed, would not have happened in reality. The Union Army had outlawed flogging in 1861. The 54th Massachusetts wasn’t formed until 1863. Also, it was mentioned that you only knew Denzel Washington from ‘Training Day’ and that he had won an Oscar for that. Denzel also won an Oscar for this movie! So he has a Best Supporting Oscar, as well as a Best Actor Oscar.
I was born in Brooklyn, New York and I remember the Boys Choir of Harlem from the 1960's. They did an excellent job here!
You've watched Cold Mountain, now you've watched Glory. Next up is Gettysburg.
Hair looks great skull 😊
Think it was around 1948 that US troops were integrated and by the time the Korean War was started American troops were fully integrated. The best Civil War movie "Gettysburg" is well worth watching. That was the decisive battle of the war.
Hello! First time commenting, but I’ve been subscribed to y’all for a while now. I don’t watch every video of y’all’s, but I generally enjoy your selection of things to watch. I’d like to suggest Cold Mountain! It’s historical fiction by set during the American Civil War, and it is loosely based on the Odyssey. It stars Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, and has loads of other talented actors. It was Jack White’s film debut, and he contributed to the freaking excellent soundtrack. Speaking of soundtracks (oh, and I forget y’all’s names. Sorry), Miss Sister! I was impressed by your knowledge of movie composers! Also, you’re really pretty! And Mr. Brother, you are also a very handsome young man, but that’s beside the point! I am impressed with your knowledge of history, though I think you misidentified Corporal stripes as a sergeant at one point. I say this because I am a corporal in a small reenactment unit. Dude, y’all should totally go to a reenactment sometime. There are small ones all over the country. They’re super fun even if you’re only a spectator (well, they were for me anyway because I’m a history nerd). And most groups have loaner gear and will be happy to let you join them if you want to try it for yourself. Women are welcome to fight too! Like, literally all you have to do sometimes is go up and start talking to us, and we will do our best to get you on the field immediately. At most battles, reenactors are happy to just have more people🤷♂️ Wow, didn’t mean to write so much, but there ya go. Thanks for the entertainment, and keep up the good work! TL;DR nice channel. Watch Cold Mountain, and go check out a civil war reenactment sometime . Thanks. 😃👍
Denzel won the Oscar for Best supporting Actor in this movie and Best Actor for Training Day. So, fun fact, both movies include future Salamancas from Breaking Bad. Tuco was in Training Day and at 20:20, the guy on the left is Hector Salamanca.
One of my favorite war films.
The US Civil War took a long time to see any kind of moral clarity on the Union part. They were playing make-believe for a long time, acting like it was about something other than slavery. As soon as they were willing to admit reality, we started winning handily.
I'm a big fan of one of Matthew Broderick's earliest movies, War Games. I think you would get a kick out of it. Also, Ladyhawk, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer. Matthew had a smaller role in that movie but he was excellent in it.
I saw this movie when it first came out, and later read about the scene in which Denzel Washington's character was whipped. He had been told that for the scene, he would be struck twice and they would cut, but the director told the person holding the whip to continue on. And Denzel's face on the third strike reflects the realization of powerlessness that he had in that moment, which also reflects the powerlessness that African Americans had in that terrible time.
Prison scenes were film in Kilmainham Gaol Dublin which has its own history of irish sacrifice the leaders of 1916 Rising were executed by firing squad. Check out these irish war film recommendations: Wind that shakes the barley starring Cillian Murphy of Oppenheimer Oscar Win Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts.
A very poignant scene was Shaw sending his horse away knowing that he had decided to not be at the rear like most commanders, but at the front with his men and his chances of survival would be almost none. His last looks at the ocean were what he considered probably last looks at life and a last chance to change his own mind on his decision. Broderick does a great job of showing all of that in his expressions.
If you ever get a chance watch Denzel in 'For Queen and Country', playing a British Para.
In 1989 it was a complete shock to see Ferris Beuller as a scarred military commander.
My favorite movie
Has anyone asked for you to watch Pans Labyrinth?
Hi! I’m really enjoying your reactions. I like how natural you guys are but sometimes it is hard to catch what you are saying. I wonder if it’s possible to keep the same level of naturalness but speak up a little more?? 🥹
"All demons look attractive somehow." Truer words have never been spoken.
Señor Bob plays Silent Night ...the piano keys are G A G E very clever MrTarantino🤠
It's funny because I thought the exact same thing about Jessie Plemmons resembling Matt Damon's Mr Ripley character. Lol.
