In 1989 it was a complete shock to see Ferris Beuller as a scarred military commander.
I saw this movie when it first came out, and later read about the scene in which Denzel Washington's character was whipped. He had been told that for the scene, he would be struck twice and they would cut, but the director told the person holding the whip to continue on. And Denzel's face on the third strike reflects the realization of powerlessness that he had in that moment, which also reflects the powerlessness that African Americans had in that terrible time.
A very poignant scene was Shaw sending his horse away knowing that he had decided to not be at the rear like most commanders, but at the front with his men and his chances of survival would be almost none. His last looks at the ocean were what he considered probably last looks at life and a last chance to change his own mind on his decision. Broderick does a great job of showing all of that in his expressions.
I'm a big fan of one of Matthew Broderick's earliest movies, War Games. I think you would get a kick out of it. Also, Ladyhawk, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer. Matthew had a smaller role in that movie but he was excellent in it.
My favorite movie
If you ever get a chance watch Denzel in 'For Queen and Country', playing a British Para.
Has anyone asked for you to watch Pans Labyrinth?
