An AMAZING Young Al Hirt on Lawrence Welk! One of the very best!
Outstanding!
I Miss My Dad I've Love this Sinccw.....yeahness
Great 👍
Absolutely fantastic !!!!!
He was certainly ON that day!
Maynard was such a swinger back then!
Why couldn't you have done better on the vid...Maynard is a badass
sorry, but thats how i found it on the web, could`nt fix it...
I saw Maynard 4 different times throughout the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. He and his bands were great. I never got to see him with a band this big.
i used to see him when i lived in Ventura/Oxnard all the time when ever he kicked off his tours, whether it be in Oxnard auditorium, Ventura HS, Westlake HS, Ojai valley inn, Nordoff HS. even saw him at disneyland! always front row center! and i never thot he would come to a little redneck town i currently stay now in south georgia, but he did, and saw him there back in `03! got my pic with him and patrick hession as well!
OMG, everything about this performance is incredible!!! BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is absolutely insane...... The arrangement, rendition and performance of HEY JUDE is simply out of this fucking world!!!! GOD BLESS MAYNARD and the MUSICIANS HE ASSEMBLED for THIS TAPING.......THE FOOTAGE & AUDIO WILL NEVER GET OLD!!!
This was not a guest appearance! They were briefly band members! Fountain sard they left because “bourbon and campaign don’t mix!” Hurt said the problem was as that they weren’t into playing actual arrangements all that much!!
Hirt, not Hurt. Fountain was a band member, and the quote about "mix" was attributed to him after he left Welk.
Yeah, I know! I’be been a huge HIRT fan since the mid 60s! The ‘Hurt’ was done by the damn spell checker!
Three in a row ! "Conquistador, New Vintage, Carnival ...The rest is history ! First time hearing "Over the Rainbow" live, with his "Firebird"(gliss) trumpet ? Wow! Thank you for uploading.
sure thing man!
Wonderful performance and great heart by Maynard and his British band. John Donally on lead trumpet is excellent 👌 Vaughn 🎺
Excellent yes!
Maynard was a 70s guy no question about it. Lucky for me I went to high school in the 70s and saw MF Orchestra live many times. Maynard was unstoppable, there was never a bad night, or even a bad note, and it was effing loud, rivaling the rock concerts of the time. Does anyone know was Lynn Nicholson with the band for this concert ?
Every note on the beat, Dizzy.
Whos the leadtrumpeter?
Dan Miller
True masters of their art!
Thanks for sharing that. I had never hear that performance. Wow!
YW!
Maynard had an energy level that no one has ever been able to match... it's like a nuclear explosion on stage!!
Who knows the complete line-up? Peter Herbolzheimer-bass trb Albert Mangelsdorf-trb (?) Dusko trp Horst Fischer-ld trp (?) Heinz von Hermann-alto sax Ferdinand Povel-ten sax Bubi Aderhold-bar sax (?) ... Who else?
Wonderful but sorry to find out it was sped up. BTW I have some recordings of Maynard playing bebop back in the day.
Bob Summers an outstanding player. Johnston my all time favorite Bari player. What happened to his solo during MacArthur Park?
I love his stories 😂❤
Gotta love Maynard!
Pierre and Alois are still making music together in Heaven
Love it! Maynard was as I remember him. Master and always had killer sections. Best I've ever heard Biviano.
Ahh yea!
Man that band is committed. They all just got out of jail and were able to make their gig. 😂 Seriously, I love MF and was lucky to see him perform many times. RIP Maynard. ❤
Never knew they did Battlestar Galatica live. Not the best set list Maynard ever did, even for the second half of the 70’s, but nice that Stella By Starlight is here.
Gregg Bissonette on drums.
Nice balance of classic MF charts from the best period of his career (Roulette) and good newer charts. I wish he’d continued to do that TBH. Stopped after Live at Jimmy’s, though of course some of those charts like Airegin and Stella By Starlight had later revivals.
I had forgotten how mind blowing it was to see Maynard and the guys perform Pagliacci. This was another amazing finale.
Subscribed. Man you have some real gems!
Thanx!
Biviano sounds great here. That trumpet section is tight! This could have easily been released as a live album.
MF - this is so Awesome. “They don’t say Work the Trumpet, they say Play the Trumpet. So you mustn’t be too serious, because you have to handle Missing: Big deal (laughter). So that has got to be your healthy mental attitude. You do the best that you can, and then you laugh when you miss. The band director won’t be too turned on by that (laughter). I’ve missed a million times. So, I laugh a lot. An important thing to remember is that us jazz musicians can cover it up better than the classical guys can.”(laughter) … he’s just so much fun to listen to. -- “Thinking while you’re playing is an interruption.” (After hitting DoubleHCC): “I’d like to let you all know, that’s Not the way to warm up. OK? Normally I don’t do that.”(laughter) --- “I wouldn’t want to do that for some of the symphony conductors I know. ‘You’re outta here!’”😢
The worst intro of all time. Maynard and band sound great of course.
Какое га....но!
Maynard's soloing on Caravan is beautiful, quite operatic.
Magnificent by Diz, MF and Herbie! Vaughn 🎺
All the trumpets had their hair done like Stan Mark. Beautiful! 🎺🎺🎺🎺
Our hair was all natural!!Trumpets L to R Bob Odneal (me)😎👍🎺Stan Mark(RIP), Rusty Barker, Alan Wise
@@tptdrI didn’t hear that Stan Mark died. RIP Can I have you’re autograph??
I first started listening to Al in 1958 as an 8 year old and taking trumpet lessons. I always preferred his albums with big orchestras because this allowed us to hear the gorgeous tone quality and power. My 3 favorites include “they’re playing our song, honey in the horn, trumpet and strings”. Truly awe inspiring.
I would love to see a picture of the scene at Jimmy's while MF was playing there. I've listened to this album since I was a teenager and loved it. I can sing the MF solos and most of the other guys solos along with them, and even from memory. I've always imagined it was a big auditorium setting, but I've heard it was just a little club. What do we know? Anybody see MF and the band there?? What was the layout?
So glad this exists. At 44:00, love The Fox Hunt, although the other guy in the duet is a tad over-matched. Maynard was always so gracious to local performers who'd sit in on events like this.
He certainly demanded perfection. Loved studying under him.
I'm curious: what's the source for the audio. I just found a copy on reel to reel.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There needs to be a Sirius radio station dedicated to music like this!
Great 👍
Correct me if I am wrong but Kim and her husband really screwed Maynard over.
❤
"Eric Hiroshima".😂 God bless Boss. God I miss him.
I love Maynard, and the Roulette recordings were his peak.
