Almost inexplicable audio perspective here, but thank God, someone hit record! Buddy & Maynard, I believe, maintained sort of a silent competition,( that may well be more Buddy’s perspective than Maynard’s) But each of them evolved the idea of a big band into something completely new and exciting each in their individual ways. And each of them inspired More younger musicians than you could possibly count. I always thought it was too bad, though, that they never collaborated in some kind of organized way. It could have been incredibly exciting. * A Post script… I suspect this may have been recorded by someone in the horn section. I think we are hearing Maynard from behind.
Interesting bit of music history. Steve Marcus watching Maynard. Wonder what he was thinking. Kenton looks happy. Al Grey sat in with Buddy's band in Europe around '86. Anything else to add about this recording and photo?
