    Question- if you are car camping ( sleeping inside your car at a campsite) …is it okay to keep food in a cooler inside your car? Other scentables? - or better to keep it in the bear box?

    • @TrailTime
      @TrailTime 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s always best to use the bear box if available. Bears in some places have been known to cause damage to cars with food inside. But if it’s your only option, it’s better than nothing.

    Best advise I heard was in Boy Scouts, "Watch where you put your hands and feet." My father was in New Guinea during World War II. There were serious snakes there. He said only one guy got bit, the guy who played with the snakes. "Don't play with snakes." Also, in New Guinea don't accept the natives' invitation to dinner. You could be on the menu.

  • @alexstoermer

    80 is way too high to be your “worry temperature.” I’m in Southern CA and almost learned the very bad way - 50s and 60s but sunny… THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. This is much cooler than I thought the “worry temperature” was supposed to be. Don’t go, or heavy boots + snake gaiters, or snake boots. Disagree? More than welcome to! Just know 800 people a year are bitten by rattlesnakes. It happens.

    There are several other tips. If the air temp is over 95 degrees F, the rattlesnakes will be in the shade since even a few minutes in the sun will kill them. Keep your hands and feet more than 2 feet from shade, bushes, etc, and then chances of being struck are much lower at this temp. If the temp is cooler than 80 degrees but warming and they are out, they usually will not rattle nor move out of your way. I stepped on a big diamondback in just this condition. I also walked up into about 40 of them on an outcrop in AZ during February when the temp suddenly rose to 80+ and they had all come out of a den to sun themselves. I did not see any of them until I almost jumped on one and this made him rattle. After that I could see them all around me, and there was at least 40 of them. Took me almost half an hour to safely work my way out of this crowd.

  • @Frogseathorses

    I was 15 miles into a 30-mile day hike in the Santa Catalinas in Tucson and got tricked by the wind and the faux rattles. Heard that for hours and dismissed all “rattling” sounds…until I saw a Mojave on a boulder about chest level and feet from me coiled and threatening to strike. That was the day I stopped listening to music in both ears. (Trekking pole probably saved me, and that was the only time I’ve ever used one)

    I had a hiking pole for 20 years, the REI telescoping twistlock - the locking mechanism finally broke, after years of barely working. I looked into poles, and I found that they don't make twist-lock these days, and rightly so. THe Black Diamond "Z" pole attracted me most, because the ability to collapse to 15 inches is a game-changer, but I also need adjustability, so the Black Diamond FLZ is unbeatable. But given the remarks about the carbon fiber breaking under heavy load, I think the aluminum would be a better choice, at 2.1oz more per pair, and greater durability. You helped me decide to go with the aluminum one instead. But I still need to know: is it going to last me another 20 years? I sometimes need to plant the pole hard, to keep balance, and I need a pole that's not going to break.

    • @TrailTime
      @TrailTime 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mine are carbon fiber! The only thing that has broken on my poles so far are the hand strap and the shock cord inside. They’re really durable! I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

    My girlfriend and I are looking to get into backpacking and we are in this area! Looks like a great place to start! Does it cost anything to camp there or leave your car at the trailhead?? We are confused on how to find out where we can camp and where we can’t.

    • @TrailTime
      @TrailTime 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! It is one of my favorite areas but it has gotten really popular lately, so if you go, go early or mid-week to avoid the crowds. Generally speaking, you need a permit to camp in any national park managed areas (that includes most national monuments and national memorials as well) If you’re on forest service or BLM land, you can pretty much camp wherever for unless otherwise stated. You just need to move your campsite every 2 weeks. This trail is on USFS land, and no permit is required. I would start with looking at forest service trailheads, or use the backpacking filter on all trails. That will give some ideas 🙂

    • @TrailTime
      @TrailTime 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am under the impression that most bear attacks occur because the bear gets startled and thinks you’re a threat. In the case you laid out, I would start by coughing or something along those lines to let the bear know you’re there. Then get louder if it continues approaching.

    Got mine yesterday, hoping to test next week in Ukraine, Carpathian Mountains, Gorgany mountain array. So far they look rigid, really light and comfortable with a grip. Comparing with Dynafit (that feels like a child toys) - difference is huge. Also my durston Xmid arrives soon, so the FL should give me enough adjustable range to set this tent comfortably, compared to not FL version.

    Great video, thank you. If you put your hand up through the wrist strap before gripping the handle you have the protection of the padding to help with the soreness, gives more stability and allows for a looser grip, but most importantly… if you trip, it will allow your hand to move away from the pole to prevent thumb dislocation or breaking on landing palm down.

    so if you're on a remote trail where often there isnt internet connection on your phone you cant fly it about properly? is there a version which doesnt need your phone to work?

      You don’t need internet connection to fly, just for initial setup. There are other DJI models that have a dedicated remote, but it would be heavier for you to carry both your phone and the beefed up remote.

      @@TrailTime ah ok. Makes sense. So maybe set it up at the start of the trail and then you're free to go nuts?

      @@TommyGunner86 I just check everything is ready to go the night before my trip. I check the software is all updated, that my phone can connect successfully, batteries are charged, and the memory card is empty and in the drone.

    The $80 annual park pass is ONLY for The Lost Dutchman State Park! I have one and live nearby. The Tonto National Forest is a separate pass. I have that one, too. I hike all over that area but have never done Flatiron. Too scary! LOL. I need to be in better shape, actually. It looks deadly. Kudos for turning around! So many people don't trust their gut and get into bad trouble. Thanks for all the geology information! I never knew how it formed and it's so interesting! PS: I work at REI! Thanks for all the links on the 10 essentials!

      Thanks for the comment! Flatiron is a burly hike, but I’d highly recommend doing it at least once! As for the state park annual pass, it actually does get you into more than just Lost Dutchman. There are plenty of other state parks that the annual pass gets you into (Catalina State park, Fool Hollow state park, Patagonia lake state park to name a few) But it WILL NOT grant you access to any federal lands that require a fee such as parking at the salt river or access to national parks.

      Thanks for that info. I have not gone to any of those other parks you mentioned so that must be why I thought it was just for Lost Dutchman. It seems like I have a lot of passes! Arizona is so beautiful! It's worth it. : ) @@TrailTime
