In this special video, I’m thrilled to interview Dr. Geoff Lindsey, Honorary Lecturer at UCL, Director of the Summer Course in English Phonetics (SCEP), and author of English After RP. Together, we dive into the fascinating world of English pronunciation teaching, exploring its challenges for both native and non-native speakers. Dr. Lindsey sheds light on why the phonetic symbols used in mainstream dictionaries for the traditional teaching accent of British English (GB/SSBE) might not be what you think-and why it’s time to reconsider how we approach pronunciation instruction.

老師，想問下preriodic這個字，由於自己經常被同事提醒係要每一個音節都要清楚讀pre/ri/o/dic,但我以前老師讀係好像吞了ri個音，讀成pre Ah dic。想求証一下pre Ah dic是不是錯誤或跟本冇人這樣讀？

Hi 169abe，據我所知沒有。這是音位下降，而那個位已給其他音佔了（dress, set, let）等。Overcrowding of vowel space會妨礙溝通，這是音系學角度的解讀。

would you please check and confirm the IPA of "comfortable" in 5:40, which is /ˈkʌm.fə.tə.bəl/ in Cambridge Dictionary and almost all people pronounced as "come-fit" instead of "kɒm" in youglish.

Some English find it hard to understand Scottish accents too, so you're not alone.
You pronounce the dark L like a light L. It is wrong. For the British dark L, the tongue tip doesn't touch the alveolar ridge.
