Welcome to Rob Sandstrom Designs!
I enjoy learning new tools, maker techniques, and software. Once I learn these things well enough I enjoy sharing this information with others that want learn new skills or more efficient ways to make things and inspire them to follow their dreams to make something awesome.
In 2017 I started my "Maker" journey. During this journey I developed a special interest in using "Digital Tools" (CNCs, 3D printers, Lasers, etc.) to help me with my creative efforts. The software and physical knowledge with me was intimidating at first but I dug in and got proficient with the software that runs these tools and the tools themselves. TH-cam content Creators were a go to source to help me learn in my early days and still are. This is one of the reasons I make TH-cam Videos to share how I do things - it's part of my paying it forward.
It's a whole new exciting world with lots to come.

Step by Step: Carving a Deviled Egg Tray with My Laguna CNC that I designed with Vectric vCarve Pro
This is part 2 of a 2 part video series where I design and carve a Deviled Egg Tray in the shape of a Christmas Tree with BAMX material. BAMX is a special multicolored wood product that can be used for woodworking products to present a unique design.
This video focuses on carving a deviled egg tray that I designed in vectric vCarve Pro software. I am using a Laguna IQ Pro CNC to carve the design.
I am using a combination of toolpaths for carving efficiency and effectiveness that Ryan Drapela shared with me. I will link the video that Ryan shared these toolpath strategies so you can see from the OG directly why he recommended these.
If you have not see the video where I design the deviled egg tray in vCarve Pro it is recommended you watch that video first.
That video can be found at this link: th-cam.com/video/o-hYIrfYp0Q/w-d-xo.html
What you will see in this video:
➡️ How I use a scrap piece of wood to test my cuts and adjust my point round over toolpath before trying to cut the real material
➡️ How the BAMX material looks when carving below the external veneer
➡️ How the use of a roughing cut can help with a more efficient and effective point roundover toolpath and finishing toolpth
➡️ How setting the Z zero to the machine bed provides a cleaner cut through the material without damage to the spoiler board.

Rob, Did you put any kind of finish on the tray? like tung oil or something?
@@kerrycassella66 in this case I just used some Howard’s Butcher Block cutting board conditioner (mineral oil and beeswax mix). I was in a hurry at time and was out of the Bumblechutes finish I normally use.
Hi Rob, I bought some BAMX. I have been waiting to find a good project to use it. I think the Devil Egg Tray might be the one. Thanks.
@@kerrycassella66 the deviled egg tray did pop with the bamx-as I said I got feedback to make egg dishes slightly deeper to help keep eggs from sliding when moving tray with eggs on them. Will make another one soon. Asking my daughter what shape she wants - chicken, rooster, heart, or something else.
Great video Rob. I do enjoy watching your videos. I always learn something new watching your videos.
sir we are manufacturers of white pearl pigment powder if you had any requirements then plz DM me we thankful to provide you our white pearl pigment powder... Thank you
Beautiful. But, sorry THIS IS NOT ART. IT'S A SINGLE COPY. GOOD JOB, GOOD HOBBY BUT, A SINGLE COPY.
Thank you for the comment. Every comment does help. I am not sure what message you are trying to convey with the comment about this is not art. I never indicated this was art. This is a deviled egg tray and you can make as many as you like. hope you have a terrific day.
Great instructional video of tramming. Rob, could I get the 3D printed part file for the holder
Thank yiou for the feedback.
Nice work
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Every comment helps TH-cam see people are interested.
Very in-depth knowledge of how to do 3d modeling. Love this!!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment Ryan. I know you have great deal going on. Thank you even more on giving us all insights on efficient cutting processes.
Love the process of making this on the CNC, tear out is so hard to figure out, great job! Love the use of the BamX!
Thank you for working to develop the BAMX for the rest of us. I will have furture project using the material and showing off how good it can look with the right projects.
Turned out great! A video on preventing tear out would be good! Have a great weekend.
Kevin...it would be a good video. But as you can tell I haven't totally mastered it but I am pretty good. In this case I believe it was my bit was older and possibly dull. It could also have possibly been less if I had taaken a 45° raster angle. Let me give some thought if I have time to create some sort of video on minimizing tear out.
Great information! Thank you for this informative video Rob
Kevin...appreciate the positive feedback. Hoefully you can take this information and take on your own project - provided you are interested in making your own deviled egg tray.
Thanks for sharing good information here. I have some wood waiting to be carved out just for this.
Allison...I would love to see how your deviled egg tray turns out. Send me a picture at RobSandstromDesigns@gmail.com if you actually make one of these. They are lots of fun.
@ I definitely will.
@ Also, it was great to see the Bamx being used.
Both videos were great!
@tedlitz7266 thank you.
I enjoy all your content and I appreciate your hard work! Thank you for sharing…
Thank you for the positive feedback.
I'm not so into short videos. I would rather you do the full length videos and live streams. Thanks for all you do.
Kerry...thank you for taking time to provide the feedback. It helps me decide where I put my energy. The instructional detailed videos take so much time and effort and I get concerned at times that I am taking too long between videos - but this helps me understand that just may be how it is going to be. Thank you for continuing to watch and feedback. It is so helpful.

Do you like your P1S? Been contemplating
I do like the P1S. Here are some of my thoughts on the topic. I first bought the X1 Carbon because I heard it was the best Bambu had at the time and it was as trouble free as could be expected. I liked the built in monitor on the machine and a few other things. When I went to buy a second machine I wanted something that would operate as well but cheaper. I went with the P1S because I kew i was going to be in an environment where dust would be there (my woodworking shop. So, after having for a couple month the P1S offer all of the same reliability and print quality - haven't noticed any difference. With the handy app on my iphone I don't miss the on screen monitor. If I wasn't in a woodshop or adverse environment I would consider the P1P or A1 mini, but I like the AMS and the closed environment. So the P1S is a good choice in my opinion.
@ Thank you Rob. If I do expand mine would be in the shop as well. I was looking at the A1 combo but a little more I can get the P1S and have choices. I am thinking I would be using PLA until I figured things out. I have some other things that may require some finances before I pull the trigger. I appreciate your in sites! I appreciate you!
Just the information i needed
So glad to hear this was helpful for you. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Just to comment on the two abilities in one, you need to save two jobs and run one from the top, then run one from the bed. This was you get the best of both worlds. Unfortunately, I have not found any way to save these as one file.
Thank you for comment. I often want to z on top for most of job and then on spoiler for final cut through. This can be bit of a pain. I have done it a couple different ways. First method save all surface z toolpaths and then change to machine bed and recalculate all cut through toolpaths and save them. Second method is to utilize sheets. Exact same project on both sheets with one sheet having z on material surface and other sheet on machine bed. Both of these methods only require one file. I hope this is helpful.
Learning how to make my own designs, and this helped! 3-D is a whole different world to set up. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for raking time to comment. My goal is to help others with their learning so I am glad to hear it helped. Keep having fun and learning

Hey Rob, Great video! Really liked the node editing part and your reasoning behind it. You have two TBN bits listed, the only difference I see is one is metric and the other is imperial. Is there any other differences that I am missing? Lots of good epoxy info in it also.
Joe..you are correct. There isn't much diffrence. The metric one was recommended by Nick from the TH-cam BROINWOOD. I took his course and that is what he recommended. LAter I looked at the Amana one that I already had and it seemed to match up. Haven't used the mana one very often because I have the metric one.
@@RobSandstromDesigns Thanks for your response. I watched the first part of your trip and was surprised to see we have something in common. I live south of Ft. I've been following you and Shane for a couple of years and am getting back into epoxy after about a year. I have been trying to get my feeds and speeds dialed in but no mater which way I go the chips get packed into the area I cut making it a real pain to get them out. @@joereynolds539 good to hear from you. The young man in Arlington was my Nephew. My son lives in Port Angeles, WA. Sounds like you are on the right path with your epoxy projects. Keep on moving forward and having fun.
I like the caliper holder on the workbench. Not sure of the motor to left (router?) Great tutorial Rob. Thanks Seasons greetings!!
Yes that is a router - I use it mostly for putting chamfers or roundovers on serving trays and cutting boards when I don't want to use my router table. It is very handy, battery powered, milwaukee trim router.
Great Tour Rob.
Thanks Jake.
Great Video Buddy.
Thank you Jake...trying to make time to work on the shop video when I visited you but Christmas present making is kicking my time butt. I like your new Subscribe banner that floats across the screen. Gotta figure out how to do something similar. Copy from the best.
many times, all you have for a source is a picture. Sometimes the picture is in perspective, other times the picture is low-res. There are tools to de-perspective and to upscale. Might be worth doing a video how to make a bad picture usable
I think that may make a good video. I haven't spent much time with the AI tools available to do what you suggest. It would take me some more investigation to get to a point I feel good enough to share with others, but it might be worth pursuing. The closest I do to this is when I use IMAG-R to prepare photos for laser engraving. But, still learning that program.
@@RobSandstromDesigns If you remember my prism-like wooden snowflake, all I had was a picture, in a perspective
