I don’t think he was ever like a good looking Sex God, so to say in the beginning- I think these girls get so infatuated with him, because of his bedroom skills. Kinda seems like they all use him for that part of his body. Just my take He uses them & they use him

Good ideas, but I feel that, maybe, your POV is the problem. Having lived in the world that Arthur dealt with, I can tell you that this type of person is everywhere. He's not a hero by any stretch. I think this film has a uniquely Old American Guy/who lived in the 70's,80's. Yes, though, I, generally, agree with your take on 2. Keep it up!

You are defending a show that uses male sexual trauma for laughs. You are not an intellectual that understands the season more than others, you are just pathetic and lack self respect. Also the writing is plain bad. Boom, reason enough to hate it right there.

I usually love your takes but I think you missed some important criticism in this review. I did not enjoy this movie. I had to close my eyes at the theater multiple times and I almost walked out in several scenes and none of that was because of the gore. Looking at the gore actually didn't bother me at all, but all the lingering naked body shots of the women are what genuinely made me so uncomfortable. I understand the intention of it was to show how horrifying it is to see directors objectify women's bodies but in doing so, so often and for so long I fear this movie might have become what it wanted to criticize. Objectifying women to prove that objectifying women is horrible, is still objectifying women. The scenes of Sue's prosthetic tiny nipples and airbrushed ass lingering on screen contrasted with Demi Moore's body being highlighted for all its "imperfections" just made me feel all of the worst parts of being a woman, rather than thinking and reflecting about them. I understand people had different experiences with this but to me, this movie was very hard to watch. You pointed out that the lack of sexual violence probably makes it easier to watch for women, but I think the director's aim of amplifying the male gaze triggered me more than any sexual assault I've ever seen dramatized on screen. I think this might mean that this horror movie succeeded in scaring me, but I think simultaneously this feminist piece failed to inspire me in any way.

Yes! So why do we call these type of movies dystopian? They are Utopian stories, right? Where maybe the utopia doesn't work for everyone, or it turns out not be as balanced as the design intended, but generally; the world is designed to be utopian. I would call any designed world utopian, and only survival wasteland dystopian. Like; Hunger Games, and Brave New World: Utopian, while Walking Dead and Ready Player One are dystopian.

Not sure if it's empathy, emotional intelligence or a combination (perhaps in addition to having close familial relations with women like sisters and grandmas or something?)- All I'm saying is that in 40 years of life, I've never heard a dude speak so eloquently in regards the experiences of women and womanhood, including the intricacies of mother-daughter relationships and everything therein. I've heard the musings of whatever the male version of a pick-me is (eye roll), the academic jargon regurgitators, etc - but never heard such thoughtful discussion of observations from a technical outsider's perspective, while also being able to relate to instances of cross-overs in the realm male experiences. I'm incredibly impressed. And it is so bizarre (albeit unrelated) that I happened upon a Nip Tuck short the other day, went to stream some episodes (wanted to rewatch some of Willam's episodes and Rosie O'Donell's), and then you reference it here (a connection I didn't even make). Anyway, I love your videos. Thanks for the content!

Could also be viewed as a broader and more encapsulating allegory for conventional substance abuse IMHO, or perhaps more widely for any form of addiction. It's the essense of the Faustian pact. It's the Dorien Gray/monkey's paw/genie in a bottle archetype. Trying to hold on to anything in a universe in which the only thing that stays the same - is change, and the only thing that's certain - is uncertainty... Whilst intoxicated on psychoactive Substance(s), one becomes able to see the world through a simpler, freer, more naive, less painful and confusing and ultimately a more irresponsible set of eyes. Hence a regression to a freer and younger state of being, emotionally & psychically. Not physically. Your actuall physical well being is the price you have to pay... Just like in the movie. Ultimately, like any good parasite, it invades the other systems too, given the right environment... That usually being a dirth of geniune human community or family orientated connection... People want to stay in that state longer and longer. For obvious reasons, not least of which being the re-found irresponsibility brought about through repeated intoxication. And of course given the lack of substitute connection, the substance appears to be the only game in town for providing some semblance of a sense of meaning or well being. No matter how temporary or unsustainable. Even if it comes at the cost of the physical and mental well-being, not too mention their relationships, or potential relationships, with other around them. A hallmark of addiction is isolation and the insolation you described potrays that heartbreakingly. This is encapsulated perfectly by the way she prioritises her obsession/addiction over a potential lifeline extended in the form of a potentially non-transactional relationship. The relationships of those living lives of addictions are usually confined to being transactional and not personal... Recovering addicts almost always talk about how it stunted their growth emotionally and spirtually, and often practically. It also ultimately creates monsters of those unable to not stop abusing these substances. ie) going longer and longer without returning to a sober/mature state of being... Those unable to return from neverland often enough, rarely return. At least not without either divine intervention (and thereby sometimes yielding nuggets of gold in the form of cationary tales) or significant repurcussions (there own form of evolutianary cationary tales)... Much like in fairy lore... or perhaps in the most optimistic version of this yarn, they transcend their earthly schackles and fly into another plane, much like butterflys do all over the planet. The ultimate trimuph of nature Vs nature. In a battle to the death. Or to life. Being as they both just two halves of the same coin. Everything is was and shall always be thus. The coincident oppositorum. Matter arises of the void. Ergo; the void is matter and visa versa. In the same way the monster screams at the end - "its still me" - those caught in the deformed, destitute lifes of dereliction, degredation and addiction, also can't see how warped there relationship to the outside world, or more presiently, their inner world, has become... This is a person cut off from the disperate parts of their psyches, and through some kind of tragic tale of anhilation, or viewed another way - a ritual sacrifce - in the end there's almost this morbid sense of integration and therefore redemption. As if, in the her last dying performace, she truly showed the machine what the ultimate end of it's incentive structure looks like. Think the rat/cocaine experiments. Means to what end? Commodification of the human experience inevitabely leads to atomisation and soul jarring isolation. Perhaps here though, our protagonist achieves some form of transcendent redemption in the most viseral way imaginable. It's shoved down the audiences' throats the whole way though. The incestuous dictomy between desire and revulsion is exposed for all to see. The way she explodes at the end, is a metaphor for how the life and personalities of addicts become fragmented and ultimately destroyed. Usually in a violent, tragic and public way. Often leaving a giant mess for others to clean up/deal with. And of course they too end up having the pieces of their former selves swept from the proverbial sidewalk, with, at best indifference, and at worst revulsion. Just think about the ravaging physical and emotional effects of hardcore illicit/unregulated meth, crack & smack abuse on all people, from all walks of life. In all communites. Not to mention those of alcohol, cigerattes and perscriptioin psychoactives. All of these people, at some point and a some point still possible in their future, could have lives full of potential, hope and love... It's essentially potraying how substances can warp our perception of our current place in the journey of life, and close us of from the infinite possibilites that surroud us, no matter how bleak we see it from the inside. Wherever you are in your life, there's literally MILLIONS of people that would switch places with you in a heartbeat and you would fucking turn them down! You're never at the bottom of the barrel and hope always springs eternal. It's how we've got so far. Our hope, courage and curiousity. It's the Matthew principle all over again. Look where you want to be people. Where you look is where you're heading... We were heading in a pretty good direction, we just need a slight course correction. Back on track in no time. The substance provides a temporary escape and restbite from our past traumas, our physical ailments and discomfort, the reality of the passage of time and it's inevitable conclusion in death, our current place in our current stage of life, and the regret of past mistakes, or more importantly - traumas, which those with a history of addiction, have a tendency to have acummulated rather a lot of... Trauma begets trauma in the same way violence begets violence and an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. The unconscious mind of a severly traumatised person, especially one with a case of CPTSD (Complex, or I rather like to think of it as Compounded), is hardwired to find some way to resolve the traumatic event. Sadly the unconscious mind is not always great at thinking the through potential ramifications of it's "resolutions" or their sustainability... If you live too long in that place, without regular breaks back to reality, it will consume you. "if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you". Much like a parasite, warping and twisting your relationship with yourself and the rest of society, only to satisfy it's myopic, reptilian desires. This is after all the part of the brain that truly awakens from it's slumber in active addiction. The dinosaur behind the curtain knows nothing beyond desire and forfulling that desire. It can hijack the rest of the younger parts of the brain to satisfy it's ends. No amount of wealth or status will protect you from this golem of your own making, it will always consume you in the end. However, there is a way out. It's far from perfect, but it can work. Those who know, know. It's not perfect, but it can work. But without going down yet another rabbit hole, essentially, what it boils down to is this - unless you find a way to surrender, to accept that whatever losses, tradegies or malovences have been born upon you (however large and unjust), or that you have borne upon yourself & others, ie) clean house, and then take responsibility for things that do lie on your side of the street. Unless you find a way to re-hack your own hacked source, to re-gain "root" on the operating system of your mind, body and soul... THE HOUSE WILL ALWAYS WIN! As someone who has waged this internal battle in one shape or another for most of his life, I can say with a high degree of confidence, that the only I can be truly happy is everyone is happy. Addiction in any form has one purpose - to consume. Any wonder a consumer based culture, might also be one rife with the horrors of addiction and the warping of the mind that is it's lifeblood. The film suggests to me that Hollywood is the one of the epicentres of this kind of large scale destruction of the human sole. It's no wonder LA is a town gradually being taken over by numerous encampments of those disgarded by the dream/nightmare machine that is the decaying Hollywood/LA ecosystem. Seems a kind of twisted, poetic justice to me.. All that said, finally, permit a touch of Hope Springs Eternal before I go back to getting on with my life - perhaps THE HOUSE CAN LOSE when enough of it's patrons have been broken by it's mill, and the generation left in that wake, wake up and realise that mountains, waterfalls and mushrooms are far greater teachers than the corrupted minds of a self elected oligarchy masquerading as Big */The "entertainment" "industry".

Scary thing is that addiction is synomonous with attachment. And there is attachment. All of us live in a perpetuall state of alternating attachments. It's a necessary precluder to existence. Without attachment we would have no desire and without desire we would have no motivation of our own. We would be automotons. Attachment and connection and freedom are related. In a complex and contradictory and paradoxical way. But they are IMHO indivisble. Why attach but to make a connection? To achieve an peferable outcome. But preferable to what? Prefering implies desire or it's antithesis - revulsion. At the very least an inate incentive system. Morality and tyrannical forms of religion, if nothing else, are just that. A linter for your culture source as it were. Either way it's two sides to the same coin. A judgement is made. But where, prey tell, does that judgement arise? Is it you? Who are you? You are, if nothing else, the thoughts, feelings, ideas and actions which have presented themselves to you during the course of your life. Did you orchestrate that rather magificent symphony that has (given the right eyes) been the absolute majesty of your life? Consider the totality of every thought, feeling, desire and manifest action/decision/fork in the road of your life. The totality of them. Do you even remember half of them? A quarter? Did you have the thought you had as a 10 year old, a 20 year old? Who the fuck are you? You think you are the attachments of all these memories of thoughts, feeling and actions that were, in their time, just as much of a mystery to you as the reason you cannot choose to not understand English if you are fluent in it. Or understand any given concept that you unconsciously understand by rational means. We take magic for granted every day simply because we've been conditioned to ignore it. Familiarity breeds contempt. We had heaven on earth at our finger tips and we traded it in to bask in our own collective narcissism. However, as the Buddhists are so wise to point - the root of all suffering is attachment. But wait - no attachment, no connection, no relationships, no existence? Attachment implies connectivity right? A relationship. Same thing. Nothing exists without being relation to something else. But that very act is that act that seperates. Divides. That hurts. We cut ourselves into ever tiny pieces and marvel at where we came from! Now one is two and the game of life is in motion... But there always comes a day when the novelty of this game reaches an apex. Some call it the singularity. McKenna described as the transcedent object at the end of time. But all it really is, is an unfathomably complex fractal giving birth to itself in a neverending loop. Changing beyond measure upon each iteration until we once again forget we were ever born or could ever die.

Demi Moore herself has had plastic surgery to keep herself relevant especially for Charlies Angels where she had a nip tuck before she appeared in the film. But plastic surgery has gone out of control. Before it used to be people reaching their 40's and not getting roles as their deemed old. So they'd get a nip tuck to keep themselves looking young. But people who are in their teens, and early 20's are getting plastic surgery that they don't need, ie botox, implants and I'm not talking boobs. The world has gone mental and doctors are allowing it to happen all for money.

Love this. I think they are the same person, but Elizabeth Hates herself therefore Sue hates Elizabeth. And the split of their conscious happens, when Elizabeth goes pure denial that Sue is actually a reflection of how she feels about herself and despises her own self and Sue complete denials that the version of elizabeth as herself could ever exist. I love Sue version is so confident because when we are 18 we are not confident. But if we were inside an 18 year old body when we are 50, we wouldnt criticize ourselves the way we do when we actually live that age for the first time. I love the full split as a full denial that someone as me could never be that type of person.

I was laughing during the monstro sequence because of the sheer absurdity of it all. The themes of the movie are not subtle. So when it took the chance to really lean into itself being of the horror genre, it became somewhat campy in a humorous, over the top kind of way. I think that’s what most were laughing at if they were laughing at all during that whole sequence

People today (of all ages and sexes) seem to lack empathy with their fellow human beings. Unless we are a 'worthy' person such as the in vogue comedian, actor, musician or athlete, etc, then we are not given the time of the day (you are considered dull, and unlovable for who you are). This is why, I believe, people resonated with Arthur Fleck in The Joker movie, because he represented this painful feeling of deep alienation that is very present today, whereby we seriously struggle to connect with one another on a truly deep and meaningful level. We are very pre judgemental of each other based on insignificant details like clothes, looks or status etc. I even notice today how people with disabilities are supposed to run a marathon or be funny or somehow special, to be considered worthy of dignity and respect, which i find rather sad because they dont. We all need to do better and try to be more compassionate, helpful and loving. Love thy neighbour.

Marshall!!! it's astonishing that you convinced me to watch this as someone who is REALLY not into true crime. i watched ur monters recap and while i knew i couldn't do the fictional show, I did find this doc very interesting. I think the most compelling aspect of this case is how it puts into high relief the way that people expect male victims of SA to act, and how people expect victims of complex trauma to act in general. To think that people were mocking their tears-but a female SA victim would likely be derided for NOT showing emotion. the patriarchy fails everyone etc etc. What i did find odd about the doc is that it was pretty unspecific about why L didn't testify in the second trial. I'm even having trouble finding the answer to that. it looks like a combination between L deciding not to and a potential concern that the state had evidence that could damage his credibility. Have you come across anything more definitive than that? U may have also convinced me to watch tell me lies (another astonishing feat). You should make a podcast.

Loved this commentary! I’d like to add To the boob: the dancers had their boobs out and there was children in the audience and it wasn’t frowned upon, as if, there’s always clear beauty standards for children to aspire to and it’s normalized. When the monster’s boob shows, it mirrors the shame the public has of women deemed ugly by society: which is disgust. Like when Lizzo had her ass out at a basketball game and the internet was disgusted despite half naked cheerleaders doing the same thing without critique, rather being praised. Overall as a trans person: this movie resonates with the trans experience especially MTF. Like, until my makeup is done to feel like a digestible, conventionally attractive woman, my self-esteem is low and it’s hard for me to look people in the eyes. When my makeup is good, my outfit is right, I feel like sue. Furthermore, I was hesitant to go on hormones because I agree with the video: it did feel like I was going against nature. I socially transitioned about 10 years ago but Ive been physically transitioning for over a year now and there’s a high I feel like sue. I use an injectable “substance” or in my case injectable estrogen that I have to take the rest of my life to achieve and maintain desiresble results that I want and that society would expect of me as a women. You could argue that what I want is influenced by what society wants of me, just like Elizabeth’s desire to being young, to be accepted. Thankfully i transitioned when I was in a place where I accepted the Elizabeth and had/have a support system that embraced me before physically transitioning before taking the substance (hormones). Additionally, I don’t plan to undergo surgery that that can’t be reversed, I can stop (use the termination fluid) however, it makes the movie so much more impactful for me as it can serve as an allegory for the trans experience and the self-loathing some (not all) endure until they start taking hormones replacement therapy (HRT) or “the substance” and the body modifications we endure: scars from breast augmentations juxtaposed to the scar on Elizabeth’s back or the increased health risks we endure, increasing risk for a heart attack for hormones or the time lost to Elizabeth the longer sue wanders around. Truly my favorite movie of the year.

It’s without question the best movie of the year for me, and one of my favorite movies ever. I watched it three times now and every single time I feel it all. The sadness, the compassion, the excitement. It’s a beautiful work of art.

Really appreciate a proper analysis of this film, i think it was excellent and probably better than the first, one thing that stood out to me in this film was just how much arthur is pushed around for most of the film, hes being led around by the guards, the lawyer, harley, even the guys who tried to rescue him at the end, he starts at his most vulnerable point and is being literally shoved around and the only autonomous decision he can make is to let the joker come out to regain some sense of control, even though hes being manipulated into that as well. They make it so clear how hes made by his curcumstances, a much better exploration of the typical "we live in a society" thing but also firmly shows he is responsible for his actions

The first Joker was an interesting, beautiful character study. Joker 2 was tedious and boring, I was fidgetting in my seat the whole time.

I kinda hate when people watch a film and think it’s all about them

Not to be the “religious/conspiracy” type. But , look at this film again with the angle of evil/demonic elements. The devil often preys on weak minds/souls because they are most willing to destroy themselves for such a temporary gain.

Sick people to make a movie like this, sick cast and sick people who enjoyed watching the video. Those boys have suffered enough. I will keep praying till GOD brings justice into their lives n restore EVERYTHING and bless n heal them in JESUS MIGHTY NAME AMEN..

I wonder if the director was also trying to capture that our younger selves are less aware of consequences (think about plastic surgery and all the stuff coming out about how bad fillers and both are now and the long term consequences on the body) in that Sue isn't considering how staying more than 7 days and extracting more and more stabilising fluid and not understanding or considering the consequences that they are the same person and it will effect you?

sexually exploiting the story of victims of childhood sex abuse is the most vile tone-deaf thing i've seen in a long time, wtaf was the director thinking?
