Why I've Not Set Reading Goals for the Past 4 Years
It’s been four years since I last set a reading goal. And this year? I read more books than I did last year.
So if you're tired of setting reading goals and feeling like you've failed every year, or reading goals just stress you out, let me share what worked for me - and why I think you might want to try something different for 2025.

My HONEST Opinion After Trying Goodreads and The StoryGraph for 1 Year

    I usually set a low goal, like 15 (1 per month, and then just round up), bc I usually read that... then in 2023 I read only 6 books (not sure why), so in 2024 I put in on 6, so I didn't pressure myself (but I like the little "you are x pages ahead"), I don't feel pressured by a number, usually, but, for some reason, looking to my storygraph recap I felt unhappy about it... maybe bc my goal was to read more, not in quantity (but I did finished 15 books), but prioritizing it over things like watching tv or just doomscrolling, and my last quarter of the year I didn't really read much... and in my final reading month, the month of my favorite (and only one I do) reading challenge, I didn't finished any book... even when I did read 9 days in December (vs 0 in November and 3 in October). This year, I again put the goal at 6, and prepared a reading bingo, but I don't aspire to read 25 books, I just want to try and read 10 minutes a day, at least 10 days per month, just to make some room each day to slow down and give myself permission to breath and enjoy, without the pressure to DO.

    • @GinaLuciaReads
      @GinaLuciaReads 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think that sounds like a much kinder goal because you're making the choice to read more a priority, rather than a number.

    I tried Storygraph but couldn’t get used to it. Too many graphs… The reviews are a bit tiresome to write and read. I really don’t need all that information. Tbh, it gives me anxiety. 😂 Now I’m using Fable and quite enjoying it. It’s very intuitive and pleasant, but I don’t think I’ll be leaving Goodreads behind. It has its troubles, but still has the best database out there and I like the app’s simplicity. So, I guess I’ll be using both of them. Goodreads as my main tracker and Fable for the social aspect and the cuteness. 🤷🏻‍♀️ For my data, I will always keep my spreadsheet.

    Hi Gina! Very interesting video! I empathazie so much with a lot of the things you mentioned. Last year I decided to set a ridiculously low number for my reading challange: 2 books. My goal was to not think about it at all, and finally read the long books I've wanted to read for so long. I always ended up reading the shortest books I could find just to complete my challanges. I ended up reading almost 6 books, longer than usual and I had the best time reading them.

    As of January 2025 there's been a Fable update I wanted to talk about which might make you think differently about using Fable. At the end of the year they released their reading wrap-up, this contained use of AI. This AI added personalised descriptions of your reading for the year. The AI in question has output some racist, ableist, and homophobic statements. The statements were designed to be sassy and 'fun' but the output is anything but. If you do some Googling you can probably find some but I won't share them here. Until the platform sorts this, I won't be recommending Fable.

    My top five genres are romance, fantasy, manga, history, and memoir. Often when I read history it's religious history or other slightly more obscure stuff that's not as popular so I like the fact that the ratings aren't prioritized on storygraph because they can be skewed when less people are reviewing a book.

  • @LauraGoingPlaces
    @LauraGoingPlaces 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've switched to The Storygraph (mostly). It's where I track my TBR and where I post my reviews. I do still look on Goodreads as it's so easy to see reviews and ratings for books (it's not that it's hard on Storygraph, but when you're looking at a few books at once, time ticks by). I also like to look at the Goodreads Choice Awards, as well as their roundups of new books. To completely contradict that, I quite like the lack of focus on new releases or popular books on The Storygraph. In some ways, I like that The Storygraph makes me work for the ratings, as it makes me think about whether I want to check or take a chance on something that might be my new favourite, even if others haven't enjoyed it. I do miss the community aspects which you highlighted - The Storygraph feels like a more solitary experience. I rage quit reviewing on Goodreads when they kept trying to sell me copies of the book from the rating page but from Amazon US when I'm in the UK. I don't shop at Amazon anyway, but seriously, would this have been so hard to get right??!? It seems they've stopped doing this sales pitch so blatantly now, but it's too late, and it just ties into what you were saying about the lack of new features.

    This year I’m doing something new and I’m intentionally setting a smaller goal, and limiting myself to 1 book a week. I tend to binge read and real life stuff goes on the back burner which isn’t good. This year I’m going to try and find a better life balance.

    This was a pretty fair look at AI use in writing. I personally wish AI didn't exist, but since it does, I have seen plenty of ethical uses for it in writing that the AI witch hunters are either ignorantly or purposefully ignoring. 1. Contextual thesaurus - a traditional thesaurus simply can't do as good of a job helping you find the right word or phrase as a system that reads exactly how a new word should fit into your paragraph. This really helped me find the right word to replace closely repeated words in my manuscript. 2. Analysing an author's writing and providing constructive feedback. Beta readers are, more often than not, flakey time wasters, so it is great to have a reliable reader, who may not be perfect, but often does give surprisingly good feedback immediately. 3. Proofreader. I was never great at comma placement, and AI helps me figure out the best punctuation and formatting. Since commas are a minefield, I would cross check between two different AI systems. 4. Brainstorming details and assisting with research - I ask AI logistical questions, like 'could this vehicle realistically get from A to B in the time for the action in the scene to take place? None of this is much different from using Google or asking friends or people on facebook groups - it's just much faster and always at your finger tips. 5. Quick scene tests. Sometimes I have had several different ideas for which way a scene should go, but don’t know which one to choose. So I speed tested out different options with AI just to see how it would roughly work, before scrapping everything it wrote and writing the scene myself. It’s like a quick and dirty “proof of concept” pass. I only did this a couple times, but it really got me out of a rut those times. Just so long as you are only ever taking the de minimus from AI and not allowing it to actually write for you, then I don't see how it is morally or ethically any different to how an author worked before AI. To not use a tool that can help you be more efficient (if you are in fact still actually doing the writing) is just silly and immature, in my opinion. It’s like saying “I refuse to use the internet to do research because the internet is stealing all the world’s knowledge” At the end of the day - these are currently my ethics: 1. Do not use AI’s generative outputs beyond the de minimus - same as before. 2. Do not use AI cover art, because it could be robbing from illustrators.

      No worries at all. Because this is a beginner guide, I didn't include any of the classics. I find them to be intimidating and more difficult reads. This is a slightly older video though and I might update it next year.

    I would be interested to hear what you think about the new reading challenges on GoodReads that are topic specific and have a list of eligible books to choose from. A) they stress me out. 6 challenges in 3 months to read books I may want to read, but certainly not right now but now feel like I "have to" to get the cute digital bookmark graphic and B) is this really just a ploy for Amazon to sell more books?

    • @GinaLuciaReads
      @GinaLuciaReads 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I honestly didn't see it coming. After just doing a video comparing the two platforms for a year, they go and release an update! Uncool 😆. But regardless I think it could be two things. 1. As you say, a way to sell more books. 2. A response to people leaving Goodreads and joining The StoryGraph. In other words, a way for them to remain relevant to the people sitting on the fence. People who are tempted to make the switch. I personally am not a fan, I like being about to create my own challenges in The StoryGraph rather than be told what to do.

    I’ve never set a reading goal or theme or anything; I just read because I want to, when I want to, and however much I want to. In 2024 I read about 200 books, which I think is a personal record, but I don’t regard it as a particular achievement; I was in hospital for a while and had nothing else to do but read. In some other years when I read much less, I don’t regard them as bad years, they were just years in which I was doing other things.

    I have never setup a actual reading goal of x amount of pages or books. Since than you will fall into the pits you mention. I have however one personal reading goal of at least reading one page each day to keep myself reading. However since it is a goal it sometimes comes with the struggle of some times reading that page at 2350 hours. This year I picked up two literary classics (War and Peace and Les Miserables) which took me 21 and 52 days to read. I took my time with these books because especially Les Miserables can be very emotional or the contemplations of the authors in both can be complex. With no number goal in place I did not feel forced and could read at a pace that felt good to me.

    Thank you for this in-depth review comparing Goodreads and StoryGraph. The reasons why Goodreads is objectionable to you (outsized competitive advantage to Mr. Bezos and challenge to local and smaller booksellers whom aren't mining our reading data for profit at the same rate as Amazon) also is objectionable and a deal-breaker for me. Your objections to StoryGraph are reasons why I am leaning toward subscribing there. My book purchases usually include enough time to do research before I am in a bookstore or ordering online. A good friend has invited me to join a 2025 StoryGraph challenge that they also have joined. Your experience of having a year of experimenting is very cheerful and pragmatic so I'll be using StoryGraph in 2025 as an experiment and joinging my friend in a challenge. Thank you again and happy New Year!

    Totally agree on many of your points!! I use both. I do like SG, but the shelving is what keeps me at Goodreads, and the fact that I've been using it since Beta, so it has my WHOLE HISTORY. It's a bit daunting to think of moving all that history. But I use SG for the challenge tracking for sure! I haven't used it for buddy reads, yet, but I can imagine it working well, too. I also use Bookmory for the calendar and some of it's stat tracking. If we could just merge those 3, that'd be my favorite app ever! lol
