Just to note: I talk about mental health in this video and while I'm talking I show a neurodivergent study. This wasn't intentional. I had a mental health study to add there but I messed them up. This comment is to say that I know neurodiversity is not the same as mental health. Sorry about that everyone.
I don't do it intentionally. I'll read a book if the blurb interests me and there's good recommendations for it, regardless if it's YA or not. With that said though, lately I've found some YA to be a little too immature for my tastes or worse, poorly written.
I've found that too but the same can be said for adult books, although not the immature bit. I do think some YA books are on the younger side, and those I don't gel with as much.
I don't seek YA specifically, but, according to my storygraph, about 1/3 of what I have read falls under that category. Mostly they are fantasy, sci-fi or distopy, and are the kind of comfort book I would read in exam times in college until 3 am and then carry with me the next day. Definitely, they are a safe space.
Reading wasn't "cool" when I was a teen but I did enjoy reading fantasy as well as dark books, crime and psychological thrillers. I loved the classic LOTR and Narnia, as well a the Harry Potters which were still ongoing. I liked mafia including The Godfather, the intense book The Godforsaken was my favorite and I loved Jonathan Kellerman books. Life got crazy and I didn't get to read, I did get the chance to read the Twilight books in my early 20's but just this year got back into reading. Now I find the only books I enjoy are fantasy romance, I like both ya and new adult. It is the escapism for me.
I remember feeling really sad when I “had” to move from the children/teen’s section to the adult section of my public library. I thought adult books would all be boring! Thankfully this is not the case, but I still associate YA books with escapism, more adventure and fun.

This is my case, too. I tried to read one ya book becasue I love time loop trope but... I dnf it because inmaturity femal main character.
Such an interesting analysis and explanation, thank you!
Aw thank you so much
Me to a T 👏🏼 I love YA! Gosh, we millennials have really gone through a lot.
We really have!!

Absolutely! Mine is much the same and they're absolutely comfort books too.
I may have largely moved away from YA but I still read Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus every year
I still need to read the new ones! One of them is sitting on my shelf and I've just not gotten to it yet 😅

I went through a similar thing. Stopped reading after university for years and got back into it with fantasy romance. It's perfect for that.

I totally agree. It's weird that we felt that need to kind of 'graduate' away from things that we enjoyed.
Do you read young adult books? If so, why?
They're often quicker to read, and are a form of escapism for sure. Plus YA has some really great fantasy these days!
@@linb4985 I absolutely agree! YA is amazing for fantasy!
I'm into YA books, especially fantasy... born in 1982
Fun you got some video responses
Yeah! I would have managed more but I left it a bit last minute 😅
